5 REAS ONS TO LOVE ...

W

e’re the lucky ones. All of us. While so many spend a lifetime seeking happiness, we’ve found it. We’ve already connected with the sport that fills us with passion, leaving us reenergized. The only question is where on the globe to feed our souls. And sometimes that’s a question answered only after you see a photograph, say, of a whale shark near Cancun. Or you read about a destination that combines a few of your favorite highs, like wall diving and big animals. Because you never know what might spark your next geo-lust-filled desire, read on. But first, ask yourself if that next dream trip will be resort or liveaboard based. — Brooke Morton

5

REASONS TO L OV E

A LIVEABOARD TRIP

1

There is no wasted time. When you break for lunch or sleep, the boat repositions to the next dive site. On average, most liveaboards offer five dives a day, with ample time for napping or reading on the sun deck. Some resorts offer the same number of dives, but with boat commutes, you’ll likely lose hammock time.

2

You dive remote areas. Too often,

land-based dive operators won’t visit that offshore wreck or pinnacle unless you round up three friends to help offset gas costs. Liveaboards factor in fuel expenses, so, weather permitting, experiencing far-off hot spots is already in the game plan.

3

You don’t have to think (much).

You came to dive, so you do. You don’t have to worry about missing the

10 S P O R T D I V E R . C O M / W O R L D S B E S T

boat, or making a plan for the afternoon shore dive. Every question begs only a yes or no: Do you want to do the night dive? Would you like a hot towel? What about an after-dive cookie?

4

You’re there already. When it’s

time to pause for surface intervals, you’re parked at some amazing reefs. You can snorkel or kayak — and likely have a few more truly memorable wildlife encounters. Or you can pull up a lounge chair and just marvel at the view.

5

You always have dinner company.

This is a big perk for single travelers or anyone who’s social and wants to meet new people on a trip. Most liveaboards have family-style dining, which means you’ll join a few new dive buddies for every meal. With so much time together, you’ll likely get to know your fellow travelers on more than a superficial level.

5

REASONS TO L OV E

A LANDBASED DIVE VACATION

1

travels differently, and for some, it’s key to have free time to wander craft markets, sample local cuisine and hike the hills. You’ll see so much more of a destination and get to know the people.

2

You can make more than a dozen friends. On a liveaboard, your

3

There’s flexibility. Even in paradise,

4

Enjoy the night life. Stay on land,

socializing is limited to whomever else booked the same week. At a resort, you have many more meal companions to choose from, plus the option of a taxi or rental car to explore beyond the property’s front gate.

sometimes it rains or the wind picks up. If you’re not comfortable diving a variety of conditions or if you simply prefer calm seas, you can skip the morning boat in lieu of a salsa lesson in the gym or a hand of cribbage at the bar.

and you can hit the casinos, dance clubs, bars and local hangouts. Some of the best nights of a trip can start with sundowners at a beachside bar, and end at a hole-in-the-wall shack where a DJ plays to a crowd dancing under the stars.

5

You can keep nondiving travel companions happy. There are

spas, duty-free shops and golf courses to entertain the spouse, friend or family members you brought along. Plus, liveaboards don’t offer pools or kids clubs. S P O R T D I V E R . C O M / W O R L D S B E S T 11

BAY ISLANDS

C A R I B B E A N & AT L A N T I C

Located in the heart of Central America, Honduras is a short flight from many major U.S. gateways. Divers flock to Roatan, Utila and Guanaja, off the Caribbean coast, for a plethora of reefs, wildlife and memorable wreck diving. — BM

ordered by Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, Honduras has a 100-mile southern coast that is washed by the Pacific, and a 500-mile Caribbean Sea coastline — the nation includes islands off both coasts. While the country is approximately the same size as the state of Tennessee, the current population of Honduras is less than that of New York City, and with land that is pristine and wild. The color palette tends toward the green of tropical and rainforest foliage, and the blue of sea and sky. This makes Honduras a favorite with many travelers whose focus is ecology, adventure and culture. That includes dive travelers, and for divers, the focal point of Honduras is the Islas de la Bahia or, as they are known locally, the Bay Islands. Most Bay Islanders use English as their primary language, even though Spanish is the official language. The three principal Bay Islands — Roatán, Utila and Guanaja — are surrounded by the second-largest coral-reef system in the world, and Cayos Cochinos (the Hog Cays) is a sparsely populated marine reserve. Bay Islanders are friendly and helpful by nature, and the lifestyle here is laid-back tropical. For many divers, this is a destination that they return to year after year. Honduras is an ideal “two-in-one” vacation. Travelers can pair a week of diving with a week exploring the mainland: shooting the rapids on the raging Río Cangrejal, f lying through the rainforest on a zip line, or simply experiencing a place full of color and life. Beautiful, natural and inviting, Honduras is the antidote to busy schedules and daily stresses — a whole nation of tranquility, easily accessible in a single morning’s travel.

Clockwise from top: The reefs of the Bay Islands explode with marine life and vibrant color; A queen angelfish coasts over the reef; The islands offer a number of adventure experiences for both divers and nondivers.

O‘AHU While the North Shore holds the reigning title as the best place to catch waves, O’ahu’s underwater mecca doesn’t disappoint with dolphins, sharks, turtles and seals. Watersports keep things active with surfing (duh), kayaking, paddleboarding and whale-watching.

ive O‘ahu is a PADI 5 Star IDC institution with three shops conveniently located across the Honolulu area. Come let our amazing dive crew show you the wondrous world hiding under the waters surrounding the island of O‘ahu. With over 25 years experience we are here to assist you with all your diving and snorkeling needs. O‘ahu is a world-class diving destination in the South Pacific that has many species indigenous to the Hawaiian Islands including dolphins, sharks, turtles, and Hawaiian monk seals, and of course the state fish, the Humuhumunukunukuapua`a. Dive O‘ahu offers transfers from the majority of the hotels in Waikīkī. For those staying longer, open water through instructor certifications are also available. Certified divers have easy-access to dive sites with two boats, located in Waikīkī, that run a variety of daily charters including a 7:00 am deep wreck, and shallow reef dive. Wrecks such as the Sea Tiger or San Pedro can be experienced just minutes outside of the harbor. First-time divers can get started on the afternoon charter to shallower reefs. And since the evening is when the ocean really comes alive, the Friday night dive is a must-do event. Located on the South Shore, Hanauma Bay is great for beginners and offers some of the best snorkeling on the island (mask, snorkel, and fin set rentals are provided). Come dive and discover the pristine water, reefs, and wrecks on O‘ahu!

Clockwise from top: O’ahu’s beloved marine life makes for lots of photo ops; A variety of wreck dives offers something for all levels of diving; A school of Moorish idols adds a bit of movement and color to the backdrop.

Year-round explore the landscapes of deserts, mountains and seas filled with everything from hammerhead sharks to sea lions. From “the largest aquarium in the world” to the islands that dot its bay, you'll receive first-class services without losing the charm of a small city.

LA PAZ, BAJA he port city of La Paz is ideal for all kinds of visitors. Its natural landscapes, deserts, mountains and seas — from the “largest aquarium in the world” to its islands that flank the bay — are the dream of every adventurer who enjoys diving, sport fishing, camping and extreme sports. It is secluded on the east coast of Baja California Sur, facing the Sea of Cortez and the capital city, with a population of close to 250,000. La Paz offers first-class services without losing the charm of a small city. Safe and cozy, but cosmopolitan, it has all the amenities a world traveler could want. There is an extensive range of accommodations, with options for hotels and inns, including ones with all the comforts, as well as those for the traveler who enjoys nature and prefers to explore with a backpack on his shoulder. For anyone who loves diving, whether a beginner or advanced, La Paz boasts spectacular underwater sites, not to mention more than 700 different species. La Paz offers a variety of diving options, all of which depend on the weather, the conditions and the time of year. Enjoy diving with the sea lions of Los Islotes, the chance to see hammerhead sharks, whale sharks or the beautiful giant manta rays. Fall through spring is the best season for diving and snorkeling, but some of these locations can be enjoyed year-round. Espiritu Santo features an artificial reef, the Salvatierra, a ship that was purpose sunk in 1999 for scuba diving. In 2010, the sculpture “Estancias Sumergidas” was sunk in Candelero Bay in the National Marine Park of the Archipelago of Espiritu Santo. The sculpture was designed so that, over the course of time, it will become another artificial reef, helping to generate plant and animal life on the seabed.

our Seasons Explorer — a floating PADI 5-Star Dive Center — combines serious diving with serious luxury. The Maldives’ fastest cruising live-aboard, the 39-meter, three-deck catamaran provides effortless access to the country’s most sought-after hotspots. Explore vast reef formations, coral thilas, exciting channels and thrilling wrecks. Spot turtles at dawn, dolphins at dusk and seasonal groups of mantas and whale sharks. Combine warm waters and outstanding visibility with specialist courses taught by some of the country’s most experienced instructors. And with a minimum of three dives a day tailored to currents and conditions, seasonal marine visitors and the requirements of divers onboard, it is a uniquely personalized experience. But that’s not all: Mix with like-minded aficionados in casual-chic surroundings; snorkel, water-ski, fish and kayak; enjoy onboard restorative massages; or indulge in gourmet cuisine, sunset cocktails and island barbecues. Four Seasons Explorer sails between the two luxurious Four Seasons Maldives Resorts of Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru on three-, four- and seven-night cruises or on private, customized charters.

MICRONESIA his enormous lagoon, among the world’s largest, was T the scene of great tragedy in 1944 during World War II’s Operation Hailstone. American forces destroyed dozens of Japanese warships and merchant vessels, and hundreds of aircraft. It is now a dramatic backdrop for divers, who come here to dive on one of the greatest concentrations of diveable shipwrecks on earth. — BM

he Odyssey is a 132-foot liveaboard yacht specializing in exploring Chuuk Lagoon’s renowned World War II wrecks. The wrecks are only the beginning of your adventure, however. You’ll see an abundance of colorful tropical fish, anemones, gorgonians, eagle rays, and other marine life. The vessel features seven newly remodeled staterooms (at 14 feet by 8 feet, the staterooms are some of the largest available on a liveaboard) and two single staterooms, all with ensuite bathrooms, a/c control and a TV with access to the onboard entertainment system. With a maximum of only 16 passengers, you’ll never fight for a place on the dive deck and you’ll enjoy better photo and video opportunities underwater. The ship has a large entertainment saloon with a TV, VCR, DVD, stereo, library and bar, as well as a separate dining room. The spacious dive deck includes a large camera table, charging station, multiple rinse tanks and a large dive platform. Trips include 7 nights onboard, 5.5 days diving, meals, beverages and nitrox. A variety of diving is available, including night dives, shallow dives and technical dives, as well as a variety of classes. The crew knows Chuuk intimately, ensuring that any excursion aboard this incredible liveaboard will be unforgettable.

And the crown jewel is the state’s first purpose-sunk whole ship — the Lulu. The top of the 271-foot former coastal freighter is within 60 feet of the surface, a perfect depth for new divers. A variety of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach dives — including tug boats, three coal barges, five liberty ships, the Whiskey Wreck and the jetties at Perdido Pass — are just a short swim or boat ride from shore. A host of local dive operators offer a variety of dive certification courses, and snorkeling opportunities abound for people of all skill levels. Love all kinds of watersports? FLORIDA onsider nitrox certification before a C visit to southeast Florida, specifically the span of coastline from Jupiter to West Palm Beach. With a reef that starts at 70 feet, the rewards of a long second dive, like the fish, are big. August and September offer dozens of mating goliath grouper, but with lemon shark migration in winter and turtle-mating season in spring, that means there’s no bad time to go. — BM

irst, you hear the low-frequency bellowing of goliath groupers. Then you’re in the midst of underwater titans up to eight feet long and weighing more than 500 pounds. The reefs of Jupiter, Florida, host a year-round population of these fish. Jupiter Dive Center is located in Palm Beach County and offers some of the most diverse diving in the world. Dive with lemon sharks in January and February. Spring and early summer bring large numbers of sea turtles. During drift dives simply float along the reef or dive into a wreck following an experienced guide. Jupiter Dive Center is steps away from two spacious 40-foot dive boats docked at its back door. Everything is on site at Sawfish Bay.
