X-Y-Z is a project which is about understanding the relationships between planar and linear elements, in the all directions of the space. Planar and linear elements create a composition with the help of design tools which are; scaling, folding, and intersecting. In the project strategy is; creating a core in the corner and from that core growing along two main directions. Although relationships of elements in those two main direction are very similar to each other, actually those relationships are vary in themselves.

FIELD INVADER ARCH 102 Spring Semester Instructors: Başak Uçar, Heves Beşeli, Zeki Kamil Ülkenli, Ela Ataç, Murat Aydınoğlu Field Invader project is about exploring different spatial relationships on a field. The first step of the project was to designing the field. After that ‘field invader’ is designed according to informations taken from the field with a strategy. In the design, even the field is designed before the invader, there is an interactive relationship between the field and the invader. This is because they both affect and manipulate each other as a respond to the invasion. In the project there are two parts which are differentiated from each other in terms of spatial relations. While one part is composed of more compact and smaller spaces, other part holds bigger elements to create bigger spaces.

HOUSE IN REFERENCE ARCH 202 Spring Semester Instructors: Derin İnan, Onur Yüncü, Melis Acar

The project ‘House in Reference’ aims to design a house by taking references from different architectural examples. In the project site and climatic conditions are given, the house is designed in a rocky area with hot and humid climate. Because of the climatic conditions, shade and shadow conditions are significant. In order to have different shade and shadow conditions a triangular folded roof designed by taking reference from Paramount Alma House and sections of Eskişehir Ticaret Odası are analysed to reference to the relations between the masses and the roof . The roof is also designed as a circulation place. Therefore only access to all parts of the house is from the space under the roof.

MODES OF LEARNING

Subject- Object Relations in Different Modes of Learning

ARCH 301 Fall Semester Co-worker: Eda Koz

Instructors: Bilge İmamoğlu, Ziya Imren, Ferit Can Aker, Onur Özkoç, Çağrım Koçer The project aims to make an architectural research that is seeking for spaces of different learning methods and how architecture should respond to those methods. Therefore, the project is an educational institution which is located in Cebeci in Ankara between Ankara University and 50. Yıl Park. Although Ankara University and 50. Yıl Park have the potential to regenerate the neighbourhood, they did not. That is why, another aim of the projects is to regenerate Cebeci by relating that institution with Ankara University and 50. Yıl Park. The Highline is designed to collect people from the centre of the Ankara (Kızılay) to the site and highline finishes in the Ankara University Campus. In the project, Pre-school, Highline and Library are studied in 1/200 detail. Other buildings only studied with massive relations.

WORKROOM ARCH 302 Spring Semester

Instructors: Başak Uçar, Ziya Imren, Ferit Can Aker, Onur Özkoç, Çağrım Koçer Nowadays –as a reflection of automation- work times decreased and leisure times increased which addresses the reconsideration of the boundaries between work and leisure spaces. To define what is a workroom for those days first work should be redefined. Redefinition of the concept of work as a daily life activity which should not be separated from other activities, has resulted in the transformation of work spaces. In order to respond these transformations a void is proposed, which encapsulates flexible set(s) of activities and controlled boxes for the program elements. To enable the fusion of work and leisure space, terraces were defined between boxes, which also serve as spaces for ‘breaks ‘of work. The void acts like an urban carpet by connecting two different important parts of the site (Kayhan Bazaar and Cumhuriyet Road). Since the workroom located along an important pedestrian road which ensuring a flow of people, this dynamism actually encouraging to have the void totally open to that road without any wall to invite people from the road to the workroom. While the project aims to breaking boundaries between work and leisure spaces it also breaks the boundaries between other program elements like exhibition, commercial, production and such…

The project is a mega structure that aims to rehabilitate the polluted areas in the industrial area in GĂślcĂźk Izmit. It is also an eco_border which is a physical manifestation of longstanding dynamics of exploitation of ecology. The structure has different parts and each designed according to specific pollution type near them. Rather than artificial solutions to pollution problem in the project rehabilitative solutions are proposed with different vegetation and natural systems.

EXISTING GREEN AREAS

SELF_SABOTAGED AREAS

The first step of the project is data mapping in order to point different pollution types. The main ecological problem in the site defined as Self_sabotage. The program of the projects designed as a hybrid program to solve the problem, which is why each program elements includes waste management systems and green areas. The project is composed of three layers, green envelope, program elements and pedestrian access. POLLUTED AREAS

The project is studied with sections in order to understand the relations between the land and the structure. Sections also show different operations on the land like vegetation, tunnel and terrace. Sections shows the different solutions to pollution in the earth, water and air scapes. Plants for vegetation are chosen according to type and purpose of the garden.

The problem in the site is the isolated habitats of human and non-human which ignores the synergic relationships between human and non-human. Symbiosis is the common definition for the classification of negative, positive and neutral relationships between each agent that creates an ecosystem. The aim of eco_symbiosis is to bring human and non-human users together with spaces of symbiosis in order to benefit from the synergic relationship between them. Voids are designed in the project as spaces of symbiosis. The building, as a monolithic mass, is spreading to the whole site and is accessible from the streets in order to welcome people from those streets to the building. On the west part of the building the roof surface begins from the ground level and by rising it creates another option for access to the building. While one arm of the roof goes to ground level another arm goes to second floor of the building. The roof surface touch down the ground again on the south part. While the voids inside the building act as inner courts the voids accessible from the streets act as squares. The void near the administration is acts as square where many people can come together with an amphi and the other one accessible from the street is more a reading and shopping square in relation with the programs near them.

This monolithic mass has a hybrid program which contains many different program elements which are; administration, municipality, accommodation, leasable areas, education facilities, mass activity ground and scientific dissemination. With given program, circulation parts and car park the project is almost 30.000 sqm.

CASCADING CABINS AIM2019 ‘Rural Space Design of Jinfang’ (Finalist)

Design Team: M. Ziya İmren, Tamara Nazari, Aybala Kurucu, Gökhan Yarar, Mehmet Akçakoca, M. Nuri Terzi, The design tends to integrate the cascading farmlands into the built form. The built form is simply elevated on the sloping terrain without spending energy in carving out or flattening the land, encouraging a sustainable practice for the new future. Recreating the given conditions of the home stay by taking into account the experience of the courtyards and open spaces as in traditional Chinese houses and also welcoming the spectacular vistas of the context is the core of the intent. The local language is maintained in terms of the local materials together with modern tectonics. The Building structure is of various materials. The walls are of mudbricks which could be manufactured on site and wooden elements for the structure. Respecting the soil, the cabinets are elevated wooden platforms supported by steel C sectional columns and concrete foundations and are permeable as they allow easy flow of air and also allows the flow of context without creating an obstacle. This also forms a preventive measure for flooding in case of heavy rains in this sloping terrain. The roofs are sloping away from the courtyard which is constructed of clay tiles. The cascading walls are made of local stones. The choice of the materials is handled carefully in order for the texture to suit the environment and compliment the traditional Chinese architecture. The journey to the stay is welcomed by cascading walls leading to the centre of the courtyard which is defined by the resting and gathering spaces around it. The courtyard forms an extension to the farming terraces. The units are aligned in axis to the angle of farmlands and can accommodate various group of people ranging from solo travellers to a group of nine. Among the four built spaces, the living, sleeping and daily living routines are separated. People share common living area for cooking, eating and relaxing together. The common living area has a strong relation with the cascading gathering space to the open space as they are on the same level. The arrangement of the cabinets encourages permeability throughout the area, there is no definite axis or boundary which allows the user to explore paths into the area.

Reading is an adventure like experience. Recreating this in terms of architecture has made us break some boundaries for a qualitative design. The design intends to encourage a common ground for the tourist and the local interactions and simultaneously promote the habit of reading by making user friendly spaces attracting from the greens areas. The Renovations to the Library has been extensive and simple with a play of linear walls. The walls disintegrating into the green area beyond the library. The potential of this green space has been identified and taken from the public but given it back in a better way – the unattended green area in front of the Library has been incorporated into the design. This adds to the strong contextuality of the space. The road in front of the building has been taken into consideration for a better qualitative space welcoming the green area. The traffic could use the other path behind the green area without creating any chaos. The library acts as a thoroughfare from one end of the road to another with the attempt of making it public friendly and welcoming. The play of walls promotes linearity and adds to a certain sense of direction into the green space with the intent of making it porous and easily accessible, creating an adventure like experience. The walls have been extended into the green area in terms of Urban Platforms which could be one of the main areas to exchange of knowledge in terms of informal interactions promoting the ‘collision of equals’. This area could be used both by readers and non – readers. The idea of linearity has been taken further by the roof maintaining the same language of being in between the greens. The roof also promotes a direction and disintegrates itself into the greens. An attempt to make it one among the greens, the roof has planted green area along with a waterproofing membrane. The Program of the library includes an office, co working space digital library, reading area both outdoors and indoors, cafeteria and restrooms. Maintaining the same base area and height the courtyard is the main centre around which the programs have been distributed according to the level of privacy required. The courtyard is partly under shade and partly open, with louvers added to control the sunlight. All the spaces are open to the courtyard either directly or through transparent surfaces. The enclosed reading space has a vista to the green area which is neglected by
