A Celebration of Ella Fitzgerald The voice introducing this live recording is that of Mr. Jim Thorn who has done such a brilliant job in putting the Newport Jazz Weekend, and an iconic jazz festival back on its feet on the Isle of Wight, with great success in such a short time. It was at the Quay Arts Centre on Saturday afternoon, May 30 2015 that Aydenne and Keith Ingham, with a wonderful rhythm section of Jon Thorne on bass and Ken Black on drums, presented this programme of songs associated with the First lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald. With a minimum of rehearsal time this is a record of that hot, sunny afternoon in Newport, Isle of Wight, UK when we played to a full house – as Ronnie Scott used to say, “I guess the bouncers were throwing them in!”. th
The selection of material was easy as most of these songs were part of Aydenne’s extensive repertoire and they are all classics of American Popular Song and all recorded by Ella Fitzgerald over the years. Composers like Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, George Gershwin and Hoagy Carmichael could all be said to have given a little thought o how to write a good popular song. Add three standards written by Jazz pianists Errol Garner, Thelonius Monk and George Shearing plus “Shiny Stockings” to which Ella wrote the lyrics and there you have a very sophisticated set. Ella was always referred to in regal terms ; her ‘Royal Hip ness’, or ‘Her Swinging Majesty’ . This CD is a celebration of her great career and the songs she made famous. She always liked to close her performances with an upbeat blues, and Aydenne has done just that here with “Mama Told Me”. Ella, however, never considered herself a blues singer, while Aydenne, gets into a great Rhythm n’ Blues feel reminiscent of Laverne Baker. Aydenne also reminds me of that Jerome Kern song, “Nobody Else But Me”. She is one of the few singers around today who is not a copy of someone else. I hear some Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan in there, but she is unmistakably herself and all the better for it. She swings, she communicates with her audience, and her musicians and is always spontaneous, charming everyone in the room. The Quay Arts Centre has wonderful natural acoustics so we didn’t need to add any “enhancement” or gimmicks like reverb or ambiance. What you hear is what went down that afternoon. Also, there is a lovely Bechstein baby grand for good measure, which I enjoyed playing immensely. Aydenne and myself hope you enjoy this CD as much as we did recording it live that afternoon in May, 2015 at the Newport Jazz Weekend Newport, Isle of Wight, United Kingdom.
