‘THE LIGHTHOUSE’ SET DESIGN SCENE 8 - INTERIOR LIVING QUARTERS - PARLOR
SET DESIGN PROPOSAL FOR 2019 FILM ‘THE LIGHHOUSE’. GOING FOR A PROJECT I HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE, TO BE UNBIASED, I PLACED THE SETTING OF THE FILM ON THE COAST OF COLONIAL NIGERIA, SPECIFICALLY THE VILLAGE OF BRASS. DUE TO ITS LOCATION, AND THE INFUENCES OF THE COLONIAL MASTERS, THE BUILDING WOULD BE MADE OF PAINTED STUCCOED BRICK, STONE FLOORS, JALOUSIE/LOUVRE WINDOWS, AND A ZINC ROOF. THE SCENE I CHOSE TO DEPICT IS THE FIRST TIME THE CHARACTER ‘YOUNG’ ENTERS INTO THE PARLOR OF THE LIVING QUARTERS. IN THE SCRIPT THERE IS A DESCRIPTION OF THE BARE MINIMUM, AS THOSE WHO LIVE THERE ARE ONLY TEMPORARY INHABITANTS, AND I PLACED THOSE ELEMENTS IN AN INTERIOR KEEPING IN MIND THE INFLUENCE OF COLONIAL ERA WEST AFRICA.

B.ARCH THESIS CREATING A HYBRID PUBLIC SPACE IN NIGERIA THE MARKET AS GENERATOR OF PROCESSES AND PROVIDER OF SERVICES IN COLLABORATION WITH CAROLINA HOLY
THIS THESIS SPECULATES ON HOW ARCHITECTURE CAN CREATE A NEW HYBRID MODEL FOR PUBLIC SPACE IN A PLACE WHERE INSTITUTIONALLY PROVIDED PUBLIC SPACE IS ABSENT, THUS, PROVIDING A FRAMEWORK FOR PEOPLE TO DRAW FROM AND POTENTIALLY CREATE COMMUNITY DRIVEN INTERVENTIONS IN ABUJA, NIGERIA. UPON RECEIVING THE SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY SOURCE TRAVEL GRANT AND VISITING ABUJA, OUR RESEARCH FOUND THAT THE MARKET PLAYS A LARGER ROLE AS AN URBAN APPARATUS, SUPPLYING PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES NOT NORMALLY FOUND IN A MARKET AS WE UNDERSTAND IT IN THE WEST. THESE VARIOUS ACTIVITIES, ALTHOUGH SUPPLIED BY THE MARKET DO NOT HAVE ACTUAL SPACES AND ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS WOULD SUPPLEMENT THEM TO PUSH THE IDEA OF THE MARKET AS AN URBAN ACTIVATOR AND ULTIMATE PUBLIC SPACE. THE END PRODUCT IS A TOTEM-LIKE STRUCTURE WITH SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES AND OUTCOMES, BASED ON THE COMMUNITY OF THE MARKET, WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR NEW PLAN TYPOLOGIES AND FACADE DESIGNS TO OCCUR OVER TIME WITH THE EXPANSION OF THE MARKET AS THE ULTIMATE PUBLIC SPACE AND AS A FRAMEWORK FOR OTHER MARKETS ACROSS THE NATION WHICH TAKE PLACE OF WHAT IS NORMALLY GOVERNMENT SUPPLIED PUBLIC SPACE.

THE CLAYTON SCHOOL OF BOAT BUILDING AND DESIGN IN COLLABORATION WITH ALEXANDROS PISSARIDES
SITED ALONG THE ST LAWRENCE RIVER IS THE CITY OF CLAYTON IN NEW YORK, A MAJOR SHIPBUILDING AND LUMBERING PORT SINCE THE EARLY 19TH C. THE CLAYTON SCHOOL OF BOAT BUILDING AND DESIGN IS TO BE A CENTRE OF APPRENTICESHIP BETWEEN MASTER BOATBUILDER AND STUDENT. IT PROVIDES NOT ONLY A SCHOOL WHICH RUNS 6 MONTHS OUT OF THE YEAR, BUT ALSO HOUSING FACILITIES FOR BOTH STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS, A MUSEUM FOR VISITORS, AND BOAT RESTORATION AND REPAIR FACILITIES. THE BUILDING DRAWS ITS STRUCTURE FROM THE COMPLEX METHODS AND NECESSITIES OF BOATBUILDING, AS IS EVIDENT IN THE USE OF GANTRY LIFTS THAT CAN BE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE WORKSHOP SPACE. THE MOVEMENT OF THE BOAT DURING ITS MANY PROCESSES IS THE PRIORITY IN THE WORKSHOP, AS THE BOAT CAN BE TRANSPORTED FROM THE STREET DOWN INTO THE WORKSHOP, AND THEN INTO THE WATER AND VICE VERSA, WHEREAS THE MOVEMENT OF THE HUMAN IS AS A VIEWER OF THESE PROCESSES.

BROAD CHANNEL MARSHLAND NURSERY IN COLLABORATION WITH YUNDI ZHANG WITH A SITE LOCATED ON BROAD CHANNEL IN JAMAICA BAY, NEW YORK, THE APPARENT ISSUE OF DAILY TIDAL RISE AND FALLS, AS WELL AS STORM SURGES ARE PROBLEMS INHABITANTS OF THE ISLAND HAVE TO COMBAT. SUFFICIENT EVIDENCE BETWEEN THE LOSS OF MARSHLANDS SURROUNDING THE ISLAND AND TIDAL WATER LEVEL RISE HIGHLIGHTS THE NEED FOR THE CREATION OF A NURSERY TO GROW AND PROVIDE MARSH PLANTS THAT CAN BE TRANSPLANTED ONTO DYING MARSHES IN JAMAICA BAY. BY PLANTING MORE MARSHES, THE IMPACT THAT A FLOOD WILL HAVE ON BROAD CHANNEL CAN BE GREATLY REDUCED. A SERIES OF WATER TESTING MODELS WERE CREATED TO STUDY THE INTERACTION BETWEEN WATER AND FORM, ALONGSIDE THE UNDERLYING PATTERN AND ORGANISATION OF THE SURROUNDING CONTEXT, ULTIMATELY CREATING AN AREA FOR CULTIVATING, RESEARCHING, AND PROVIDING EDUCATION ON MARSHLAND PLANTS.

CHRIST CHURCH SPITALFIELDS MODEL
GROUP CONTRIBUTORS: ELLA ARNE, PAIGE BURKE, NICHOLAS JUNG, ALISE LAMOTHE, SORAVIS NAWBHANICH THIS 1/8”:1’ FOAMCORE SURVEY MODEL OF CHRIST CHURCH IN SPITALFIELDS LONDON WAS USED AS A TOOL IN UNDERSTANDING ‘CRAFT’ AND ‘RUIN’. THE MODEL WAS DECONSTRUCTED INTO A NARRATIVE OF WHAT THE BASIC CONCEPT OF THE 1729 CHURCH WAS, WHICH ENDED UP BEING SOLID-FRAME-SOLID WHEN MOVING FROM ITS FRONT TO ITS REAR. BY BUILDING THE MODEL, THE UNDERSTANDING OF HOW IT WAS CONSTRUCTED AND JOINED BECAME APPARENT, AS WELL AS ITS SPATIAL QUALITIES.

HOWARD UNIVERSITY RFP PROPOSAL
DRUMMOND PROJECTS, SHOP ARCHITECTS, STUDIO SUMO, HOOD DESIGN STUDIO SITTING AT THE EDGE OF THE HISTORIC HOWARD UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, THE PROJECT WAS INTENDED TO BE AN EXTENSION OF HOWARD UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS A LINK TO THE NEIGHBORING COMMUNITY. AT ITS GROUND PLANE, IT PROVIDES A PAVILION FOR HOWARD UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, MICRO-SPACES FOR START-UP SHOPS, A COURTYARD AND A PUBLIC PLAZA, WHILST ABOVE ARE RESIDENTIAL UNITS. THE PROJECT TAKES CUES FROM ITS SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AND STREETS TO DRAW THE COMMUNITY IN AND THROUGH, ALLOWING FOR DIVERSE PROGRAMS TO OCCUR, REFLECTIVE OF ITS LOCATION IN A DIVERSE DISTRICT.

THE BURNS BROTHERS HQ DRUMMOND PROJECTS
THIS PROJECT WAS A QUICK INTERIORS PROJECT FOR THE HQ OF THE BURNS BROTHERS, AN EXPERIENTIAL MARKETING FIRM. LOCATED IN A HISTORIC BUILDING IN DC, THE SPACE FEATURED EXPOSED BRICK WALLS AND CEILINGS. ADDITIONS INCLUDED A STOOP ALONG ITS EAST FACING WALL AND A LARGE SCREEN AND RECESSED LIGHTS ON ITS WEST. THE SPACE PROVIDES A MEETING SPACE, LOUNGE AREA AND OPEN WORKSTATION SPACE, AND CAN BE EASILY BE CONFIGURATED FOR DIFFERENT EVENTS HELD IN THE SPACE. THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS PROJECT IS THE CONTRAST BETWEEN BLACK, WHITE, AND ITS EXPOSED BRICK, AS WELL AS ITS LIGHTING.
