COMING HOME Student Life 2022

INTRODUCTION In 2021, we talked to dozens of housing officers across the country about the most pressing issues in student housing design. We drew out key themes from our conversations: holistic well-being, connections to the outdoors, and living–learning. Now, we’ve applied those themes to transform campuses for the better.

HOLISTIC WELL-BEING OUTDOORS LIVING–LEARNING TRANSFORMATION DATA

1

HOLISTIC WELL-BEING

“It’s not easy to join a brand-new community, so having somebody there becomes really important. What students were telling us was that they came to a University to make connections and find community.” — Seth Weinshel, The George Washington University

2

Students’ special interests and unique needs continually evolve and expand. Foundational to well-being, students need welcoming spaces outside of the classroom to gather, collaborate, learn, exercise, nourish, heal, and feel connected to their peers.

SPACE FOR REFLECTION Mental well-being is a key aspect of a student’s overall well-being—and is more apparent amid the complex challenges in the world today. Visible, comfortable places oncampus for students to step away and have space to themselves supports health and happiness.

OUTDOORS

“Outdoor space was crucial. I think that was the saving grace where we had the space, and we quickly moved to build things in spaces outside. That was a lesson, not just for COVID, but in terms of community and how those active outdoor spaces really activate your whole community.”

— Beth McCuskey, Purdue University 24

Outdoors spaces link residence halls to the campus, encourage social interaction, and support sustainability goals. The orientation of residence halls toward open space creates meaningful relationships between entries, common spaces, and the outdoors.

25

SPILLING OUTDOORS Gathering spaces that blur the line between indoors and outdoors encourage a more seamlessly integrated campus experience.

LIVING–LEARNING

“We’re here to serve students, we’re here to support their experience. All the metrics and all the data that we collect is living on campus has some real advantages around GPA and persistent success and sense of belonging.”

— Pete Englin, Iowa State University 38

New teaching models have shifted living-learning program spaces away from single-use classrooms and toward adaptive spaces that foster collaboration, promote wellness, and accommodate hybrid learning.

39

GET INVOLVED Residence halls build community around shared experiences and play a role in supporting the campus’ host community as well.

PLUG AND PLAY Hybrid learning is part of a new normal. Spaces outside the unit where a student can join a class remotely are important to support academic growth in this new era.

TRANSFORMATION

“We really do believe in the value of community, especially that first couple of years where you make some of your best friends.” — Stephanie Lynch, Georgetown University

52

The themes we heard in our conversations with you led to transformational projects for both new construction and renovation. Old buildings can be reinvented through targeted renovations that are sustainable and cost effective.
