Welcome from Nadia & Ayesha Thank you so much for joining us to support Women in Sport for ActionAid. ActionAid does great work with women and girls in extreme poverty around the world; championing antiviolence, employment and education initiatives.
Nadia Motraghi is a barrister specialising in employment and discrimination, commercial and public law at leading set, Old Square Chambers in London. Like many of her colleagues at OSC Nadia’s work includes sports law, including advising clubs and individuals. Motraghi@oldsquare.co.uk
In 2015, ActionAid began a new initiative for International Women’s Day, bringing together inspirational women by hosting a “Tea and Inspiration party” in celebration and support of women around the world. After attending the inaugural event we pledged to organise our own in 2016 and so “Women in Sport for ActionAid” was born to reach out to the dynamic and inspiring community of women in sport to support the women and girls in extreme poverty that ActionAid empowers. We share the view of the EU Commission and Action Aid that the message of sport is one that has the ability to empower women and encourage excellence; whether as amateur or professional players, coaches, managers, lawyers, business people and others and of bridging social divides. So whether you have reached the height of your sporting prowess or the best is yet to come; we feel that women in sports are important for us all.
Ayesha Casely-Hayford is an actress and solicitor specialising in employment and discrimination law. She is a Consultant at Brixton based law firm Wainwright & Cummins LLP, currently opening up their first employment law department. She advises and supports small football organisations in the South London area. Casely-Hayford@wainwrightcummins.co.uk Ayesha@ayeshacasely-hayford.com
We have been absolutely delighted by the amazing support and interest we have received for this event. Huge thanks in particular go to Bird & Bird LLP, our Gold Sponsors and an international law firm with a top ranked sports law team and our founder sponsors Old Square Chambers. We hope you have a wonderful time today. Please do send us your feedback at: womensmarchteaparty@gmail.com Nadia and Ayesha.
ActionAid is a leading international charity working in over 45 countries. Since 1972, we have been fighting poverty and working with the poorest women and children in the world to change their lives for good.
We work in rural and urban communities across Africa, Asia and Latin America, every day, all year round. We also respond to emergency situations arising from natural disasters or conflict.
Across the world, women and girls are affected the most by poverty. From the moment they are born, girls face inequalities and injustice in almost every aspect of their lives, leaving them more likely to be affected by poverty. Women and girls are subject to violence and abuse, which is often considered acceptable and offenders go unpunished. Girls are less likely to go to school, earn a living, or have full rights over what happens to their own bodies. That’s why we put women at the heart of everything we do. We make sure girls go to and stay in school, we work with communities and governments to end gender-based violence, and we train women in the skills they need to earn a living. We also help women prepare for and recover from disasters, at a time when they can be at their most vulnerable.
32 million girls are still missing out on school and with it, the chance of a better future. We work with communities to promote education for girls, help parents afford the costs, build better school facilities, and run girls’ clubs to support them through school.
ActionAid supports women to build a sustainable future for themselves and their children. We help women get fair wages and a safe environment to work in. We offer women training in the skills they need to survive.
We put women at the front of our emergency response work, as often they know what their families and communities need the most. So they're the best people to influence decisions about how to rebuild their communities and prepare for future disasters.
We’re helping women and girls to tackle violence and stand up for their rights. We provide services and demand justice for survivors of violence, and support programmes to empower women. We also train local community volunteers to stop female gential mutilation (FGM), forced marriage, and tackle sexual and domestic violence
Helping people claim their basic rights to achieve lasting change is at the centre of our approach.
we empower women and girls to help themselves, and we fight what holds them back we work directly with and through local people we’re on the frontline; we respond fast with practical hands-on support we do more than give short-term solutions; we build lasting change.

About the speakers Barbara Slater is the Director of Sport at the BBC. She was previously the Head of Production and Head of General Sports for the department.
Barbara Slater OBE
Her responsibilities include working with governing bodies to retain a broad portfolio of broadcasting rights, overseeing the planning and coverage of major sporting events and leading the sports journalism operation at BBC Sport’s new base in Salford. In 2012, Barbara was responsible for the BBC’s cross-platform sports coverage of the London Olympic Games - the most watched TV event in UK broadcasting history. Barbara was awarded the ‘Inspirational Woman Prize’ at the Women in Film and Television Awards in recognition of this achievement and has since been appointed as an expert to the International Olympic Committee Radio and Television Commission for 2014. Barbara joined the BBC in 1983 as a trainee assistant producer in the Natural History Unit in Bristol, but has spent most of her career as a producer in BBC Sport, specialising in outside broadcasts and overseeing the production of a range of sports including tennis and golf. Barbara was awarded the OBE in 2014 for her services to sports broadcasting. She grew up in Birmingham, and was an international gymnast, competing for Great Britain at the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976. Barbara is married with three children.
About the speakers Maggie Alphonsi is the face of international women’s rugby and arguably one of the most well-known names in women’s team sports on the planet!
Margaret Alphonsi MBE
Before announcing her international retirement in 2014, she represented her country an impressive 74 times, scored 28 tries, and helped England win a record breaking seven consecutive Six Nations crowns. She was also a crucial member of the team that won the 2014 Rugby World Cup for the first time in 20 years and was part of the team that was crowned the BBC’s Sports Personality Team of the Year. Through her England rugby career she has become a household rugby name but also a media professional, commentating on live rugby matches for SKY Sports and the BBC, as well as featuring in a number of national media platforms such as the Sunday Times, Stella Magazine, the Sun and BBC’s Children in Need (Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir). Most recently, she was part of ITV’s Rugby World Cup broadcast line-up. She was the first ever former female player to commentate on men’s international rugby. Maggie is also an excellent speaker, and is well qualified to share her experiences. Certainly when she shares those experiences, you don’t need to be a rugby fan to be interested or inspired by how she has become a prominent figure in the challenging world of a male dominated sport. From South East London, Maggie has taken her education as seriously as her rugby obtaining an MSc in Sports & Exercise at Roehampton University, a BSc in the same subjects at De Montfort University and a BTEC National Diploma in Leisure Studies at Hertford Regional College. Additionally, she has been awarded an Honorary Doctor of Arts from the University of Bedfordshire. Website: www.maggiealphonsi.co.uk Twitter: @maggiealphonsi
About the speakers Angela is an Analyst in the Planning and Reporting Department at ActionAid International. Currently Angela is project managing the global annual report. The team coordinates all planning and reporting processes for the International Secretariat and the wider ActionAid Federation, which involves collecting and analysing information from ActionAid’s 45 countries to assess their impact and contribution to ActionAid’s international strategy. She is a Greek-Canadian, a former competitive figure skater and a MBA graduate. Sport has always been a large part of her life, which has largely contributed to who she is today! When Angela started at ActionAid, she noticed that there was only a men’s football team but her female colleagues were interested in playing and didn’t have the opportunity to, which motived her to start ActionAid’s first women’s football team!

Our clerks are consistently identified as being “first rate”, led by William Meade listed in Chambers and Partners as “enthusiastic, with commercial acumen and pragmatism”.
Whilst our Sports Law team includes both men and women, for today’s event we are pleased to showcase some of our leading female practitioners:
MARY O’ROURKE QC Mary has a long history of acting in sports medicine cases, from Brady v Sunderland AFC in the 1990s, to her current instruction for Dr Carneiro in her discrimination and employment claims against Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho. Highlights along the way including successfully representing the doctor in the rugby union “bloodgate” affair before the ERC and GMC, to cross examining Sir Alex Ferguson in Appleton v El Safty – no mean feat for a die hard Manchester United fan and season ticket holder.
MELANIE TETHER Melanie is a leading employment law practitioner, and widely acknowledged as one of the country’s leading expert on TUPE. Having been a partner at Norton Rose before transferring to the bar in 1995, she has an excellent grasp on commercial and practical needs in addition to having, what is described in the legal directories as “an understated style and first class cross examination skills”. She has recently represented a sports association in a complex complaint of discrimination which was heard by the sport’s governing body.
IJEOMA OMAMBALA Sports law is a natural adjunct to Ijeoma’s employment and regulatory law practice. She has been instructed by sportsmen and women in contractual disputes, disciplinary and other proceedings before their regulatory bodies. Ijeoma acted for a dismissed manager of a championship club in contractual claims against his former employer. She has also represented individuals challenging decisions of the British Judo Association and the British Board of Boxing Control and advised the British Cycling Federation.
REBECCA TUCK Rebecca won two rugby Blues at Oxford in the 1990s before combining life at the junior bar as a member of Old Square Chambers with playing in the premiership for Richmond Women's Rugby Club. Her playing days now long gone Rebecca advises on a broad range of issues from safeguarding for children's coaches, to regulatory matters for professionals, to employment law matters for clubs and others. She is a fee paid employment judge and a qualified mediator.
NICOLA NEWBEGIN Nicola is an employment and professional discipline specialist with a keen interest in sports law. She is currently junior counsel, led by Mary O’Rourke QC, for Dr Carneiro in her claim against Chelsea Football Club and Jose Mourinho.
KATIE FUDAKOWSKI Katie’s practice includes employment, personal injury and professional regulatory work. She sits as a panel member on the Board of Appeals for Classification (BAC) which considers appeals brought by international Paralympic athletes challenging the assignment of their sporting class.
Fab Little Bag My name is Martha Silcott, and in 2006 I invented a unique tampon disposal bag, now called FabLittleBag which you can open and close with one hand, is sealed and is discreet, hygienic and opaque. Confident disposal, every time, anywhere. It was a long hard journey to get FabLittleBag on the shelves - I originally applied for my patent in 2006, ran around the midlands and north of England searching for manufacturers to make my bag and also tried to raise funding – but it was 2008 and nobody was investing. I was close to giving up when out of the blue my patent lawyer called me to tell me that my patent had been granted. Increasing my mortgage and reducing my working hours to two days a week meant that for the first time I could really focus on my invention. With focus came results; I got a manufacturer on board as my first shareholders and their machine supplier said they could design a machine to make the bags. I approached the water companies first as they have a lot to gain from my bags; with approximately 60% of the 10m tampon users in the UK flushing tampons, they spend £88m per annum getting all this stuff out of the sewers. Most were interested, some more than others and three of them jumped on board and placed orders for FabLittleBags to use in their educational campaigns with their customers. Then I targeted retailers. After a lot of research and tenacity the buyer at Waitrose agreed to stock the product and FabLittleBag was on its way to the shelves, which was a dream come true! Ocado soon followed, and we are launching in Wholefoods in March. As well as providing a practical eco-friendly solution to disposal (they are biodegradable and partially made form organic material), a big passion of mine if to “bin the angst” especially for teenagers who can feel more self-conscious than most. There
is still a taboo around all things periods and I want to normalise the norm and I think FabLittleBags are a good way to help to do this. I want them at the checkout in Topshop, in H&M, in Urban Outfitters, WH Smith, not just tucked into the femcare aisles of the supermarkets (although this is a necessary and important place for them to be). If you would like to find out more about my journey or get in touch, please email: martha@fablittlebag.com If you’d like to try FabLittleBag for youself, they are on sale for £1.99/£2.99 in Waitrose, Ocado, Wholefoods and www.fablittlebag.com
