BANQUETING HALL ART STUDIOS AND GALLERY JESMOND DENE, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, UK YEAR 3 GRADUATE PROJECT | 2021 - 2022 REFURBISHMENT & NEW-BUILD
0
This project looks at creating new artists' studios for Armstrong Studio Trust, an Arts Organisation based in the Banqueting Hall (Grade II listed) building in Jesmond Dene. It involves creating new spaces such as workshop, classroom, café, exhibition, retail, and social spaces which will allow the local community to participate in creative and social activities. These spaces will enable the arts organisation to generate profits to help fund their future endeavours by selling artworks and books in the retail spaces. The existing Banqueting Hall structure will be refurbished by building a new roof over the ruin at the foot of the site as well as repairing the interior spaces which are in a current state of disrepair. The new build project will be an extension to the North of the existing building and its primary structure will utilise CLT construction.

The cloister walls are made out of a slip form stone to respond to the existing stone walls of the Banqueting Hall. This long section through the site shows the relationship of the building with the vastness of the surrounding natural landscape of the Dene.

NORTH SHIELDS TOWN HALL | YEAR 2 SEM 2 PROJECT | 2021
02 NORTH SHIELDS TOWN HALL FISH QUAY SANDS, NORTH SHIELDS, UK YEAR 2 SEMESTER 2 PROJECT | 2021 NEW-BUILD
Exterior View of Proposed North Shields Town Hall This project is situated on the sands by the North Shields Fish Quay, an area that is rich in history and admired by the locals. The studio-specific brief set out the possibilities to design a contemporary town hall for North Shields. A public building which would centre around the themes of Ecology, Economy and Analysis of the city. This new town hall would be a place of gathering for both the public and civic workers. Therefore, spaces to gather would become essential to the programme of the design and exhibition spaces to celebrate the history of the area. Considerations about the environmental impact of the building was also a necessary aspect of the design process, which I had to carefully consider through the choice of materials and structure of the building. On the site, an existing timber groyne structure would later inspire one of the critical design elements of the building. I did not want to remove this structure from the site but instead leave it as untouched as possible as it appeared to be a natural perching place for the birds in the area. I also wanted to leave the rocky base of the groyne and the beach intact for it to remain the habitat of the crabs. This would allow the building to exist in harmony with the existing ecology of the site.

Stoddart Street Long Elevation
This project is situated on an empty carpark on Stoddart Street, next to the Shieldfield Tower. The proposal includes four terraced houses, a new community centre and a student block. The aim of the project is to provide housing and facilities for members of the local community that will encourage growth, collaboration and activity in the Shieldfield area. The axonometric shows how the site can be accessed through different entrances, either from the Shieldfield tower level or from the main road. Materials for the buildings include a mix of light brick, timber and metal cladding. The central planters also double up as seating, welcoming everyone to slow down, sit and enjoy the views.

A SHIELING FOR SHIELDFIELD | YEAR 2 SEM 1 PROJECT | 2020
The main building uses a light brick material, with alternating brick detail above window and door openings. A lighter timber is used for the fencing, on the balcony and on the roof terrace. Whilst, a darker timber is used to distinguish the angled bay window on the first floor. The third floor uses a zinc cladding which has an earthy green render.
