COMING HOME Josh Bright, who was named Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year, shares his knowledge with fellow pharmacist Brandy Cooper.
N
orth Arkansas Regional Medical Center (NARMC) is drawing young healthcare professionals to Harrison. These aren’t just any young professionals, though, these are doctors who were born and raised right here in the Ozarks. Josh Bright, PharmD and director of Pharmacy Services at NARMC, grew up nearby in Jasper, but left the area for college and graduate school. He wasn’t sure where he would end up when his education was finished, but Harrison and NARMC ultimately held the most appeal. “I really love my job, this hospital and this town,” says Bright. “I’ve been to lots of places, and there really isn’t anything quite like what they’ve built here, in the culture and the way that NARMC has aligned the physicians and the hospital into one entity. We care for such a large geographic area, that it’s really important for us to focus on keeping people well. It just doesn’t work that way anywhere else I’ve been.” Luke Bennett, M.D., left northwest Arkansas to go to college, medical school and residency training. Dr. Bennett, who specializes in interventional pain management at NARMC, was out of the state for almost a decade before moving back to be near his family. Dr. Bennett enjoys the slower pace of life in Harrison compared to anywhere else he’s lived. He can leave his house and make it to work in just five minutes — even during rush hour. 32 . WINTER 2017
DOCTORS BRING SKILLS BACK HOME
BY KIM DISHONGH “It’s nice here because you can unplug and go outside, or go on a weekend trip,” says Bennett. "We take a lot of trips to Eureka Springs or Branson for a fun night out. Living here, you can be busy when you want to be and you can lay low when you want to do that.” The cost of living and crime rates are lower than in some of the bigger cities, explains Bennett. “I feel like it’s a very safe place to live,” he says. Dr. Bennett also has confidence in the local public schools around his workplace, making it a great place for young families. “As a person who grew and went through school here, I can say that it is a good place to raise kids. In the education system here, teachers heavily invest in our students. A big part of the reason I wanted to become a physician is that my interest in science was met by teachers who challenged me and pushed me to learn more,” he says. “I had outstanding teachers in numerous subjects in Harrison.” Dr. Bennett’s father, Dr. Chris Bennett, is a radiologist at NARMC, and he enjoys talking with him about patient care, as well as about imaging reports his father reads for him in particular. “I guess growing up I never thought I would interact with my dad in that capacity, that we would have a medical interaction. I feel like that’s pretty unique and it means a lot to me,” he

says. “The radiology department here is absolutely outstanding. They have a neuroradiologist — someone who fellowship-trained in neuroradiology — and so they really have good insight into spinal pathology, and it’s just very enjoyable to talk with them. Any time I have trouble with a patient, they just really have good insight into it.” The bond he can form with patients in the NARMC setting is also something he relishes. “I really enjoy taking care of the patient population here,” says Dr. Bennett. “I am constantly impressed with how kind the patients are and the type of professional relationships that I’m able to develop with them. You’re seen as a part of the community here, and I think that goes a long way to making the doctor-patient relationship feel as much as it can be about patient care, which is great. I am constantly challenged by the thought that because I live in a small community, the care that I’m providing every day needs to be outstanding. That’s true no matter where you are, of course, but it’s just a good reminder when you see familiar faces. It’s very easy to feel you actually are working in a community and you’re making a difference in people’s lives.” Ross Halsted, M.D., had a private practice in Mountain Home for four years before a job opportunity brought him back to his hometown of Harrison. “There’s nothing like home,” says Dr. Halsted, a family medicine physician.
Dr. Halsted and his family enjoy the outdoors, so living near the Buffalo River and Bull Shoals Lake for hiking and fishing are a perfect fit. Dr. Halsted’s father owns a business, D & H Glass, in Harrison, and some of his patients are also customers of his dad’s. Several of them are people he knew in high school. “It’s great to come back to see a bunch of my classmates. I get to see where they’re at in the community and what they’re striving to do to make improvements here,” he says. “It’s neat to come home and be a part of that, to be a part of the younger group that has a connection to the community.” Halsted was born at NARMC and grew up in Harrison. He says he enjoys delivering “new generations” at the hospital. Josh Bright, director of Pharmacy Services, says the closeknit community makes for superior care for patients at NARMC. “We don’t look at it just as medical healthcare professionals,” he says. “We look at it as friends and family members, too. And I think one of the beautiful things about being a part of a small, rural community system is that it’s easy to get personally invested in these projects because we’re treating our own friends and family members, people we go to church with, people our children go to school with. It makes these things very, very meaningful to us, so it’s not just trying to get numbers to look right or trying to meet some metric or measure. It really is about trying to do the best and trying to find out what is best for these patients.” NORTH ARKANSAS REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER . 33
