Let’s hope the Ducks have been able to recover from the exertion of two games in quick succession and the additional time played on Tuesday night, as well as the disappointment of going out of the FA Cup by such a tight margin. Today’s opponents weren’t in FA Cup action last weekend having lost a replay to Swindon Supermarine 3-0 in the previous round. weeks ago, losing away at Corby Town 2-1. AFC Dunstable have had a very similar start to the season to the Ducks, losing three matches. Their three points came from a 2-0 win against Aylesbury FC. So today’s game looks like a close contest, with both sides keen to kick-start their season with victory today. About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

FC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from a club formed in 1888 for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School. The Old Dunstablians Club ceased to exist in 1988, but the football club continues to bear the club’s crest on its badge. The club started in the Dunstable Alliance Football League for a couple of seasons then moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. An improvement in facilities gave the club a chance to apply to join the South Midlands League in 1995. Accepted into the then-Division One the club struggled. Going through new managers every season, they consolidated and in 2001-02 the first team finished fourth in the league and won the Division One Cup. In 2003-04 the club made the decision to change its name to AFC Dunstable, so not to be confused

with the local rugby club. The club kept the name The ODs as its nickname. The Bedfordshire FA approached the club to become partners in the new Creasey Park Community Football Centre in 2008 and this gave the chance to move the first team to Creasey Park and were promoted to Division One for the 2009-10 season. The team finished a creditable fifth in its first season at the higher level. The team went all out for promotion in 2020-11 and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the Premier Division, securing the SSMFL Division One Cup as well. The team finished third in the SSMFL Premier Division in 2011-12. Managers Alex and Dermot Butler decided to step down after nine years at the helm half way through 2013-14. This left the team in disarray, which saw many stalwarts of the team leave. The club appointed current manager Steve Heath to being rebuilding.
2015-16 was the season the team broke all club records. Before clinching the SSMFL Premier Division title, they progressed through two rounds of the FA Cup. The team also made it to the fourth round proper of the FA Vase. The league campaign was a roller coaster ride. By October, only five points separated the top six. At Christmas London Colney were five points clear. When the team lost to a last-minute penalty to Biggleswade United on 2 January, they were eight points behind. But that was the last time they tasted defeat in the league that season. 2016-17 saw the OD’s compete in the Southern League Central Division, a position the club never thought possible. The club spent nearly all season in a playoff place until the last game of the season, missing out by three points. But the team did pick up some silverware winning the Bedfordshire Senior Cup 2-0 against Dunstable Town at Kenilworth Road.
