ood afternoon and welcome to this Pitching In Southern League Division One Central fixture against AFC Dunstable. Today’s opponents showed us incredible generosity and hospitality when we played them in October, after our supporters had walked to Creasey Park to raise money for our charity partner the Cancer Care and Haematology Fund. We hope we can reciprocate this afternoon, and begin by offering their players, officials and fans a warm welcome, and wish them a safe journey home. The ODs arrive in good form, on a run of four consecutive wins, and unbeaten in eight. In their previous game they dismissed Biggleswade 3-0 at the Eyrie. Like us, their Saturday game against another of our recent opponents was postponed due to the weather – as was another meeting with Biggleswade in the Bedfordshire Senior Cup in midweek. What else can I write about our own form? Other than we

have to catch a break sometime! Hopefully with the majority of the squad now back from injury, and a chance to reset over the past fortnight that upturn will come this afternoon. We have also welcomed Harry Scott to the squad since our last outing. Harry joins us from Thame United, and has been a familiar opponent over the past few years for the Red Kites and Aylesbury FC. He has played for us before too, in two pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2018-19 season, scoring twice in the game against Colchester United Under 23s. If he can repeat the quality he demonstrated in that game, he’ll be a valuable addition to the team. Our next game is away against Welwyn Garden City on 5 February, and we hope to be able to share the date of the rearrangement of the match against St Neots Town very soon.

The history of Aylesbury United A

ylesbury United were founded in 1897 when three local sides: Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town decided to merge. The club, affectionately known as ‘the Ducks’ due to the famous Aylesbury breed, have experienced some incredible highs over their long 124-year history but now battle for existence without a home ground to call their own. In the early years United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where they remained until the Second World War. 1951 saw the Ducks gain their first taste of national publicity as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, eventually losing to Third Division side Watford. Southern League and success Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, a move which got the ball rolling on the club’s most successful period. A number of events followed which were to help: In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then a year later a young local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, unaware that he was to become the most successful player in the club’s history. ‘Hercy’ was, and still is, an Aylesbury icon, and some 20-years later he finally hung

up his boots having smashed the club records with 669 appearances and scoring 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. This gave the town a new impetus and Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the GM Vauxhall Conference. United then hit the headlines again, becoming the only non-league side ever to take on the full England team, as more than 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions. Unfortunately United’s brush with the non-league elite only lasted one season, after which the club were relegated to the Isthmian League. Fame and the FA Cup During the period between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. The highlights being a victory over then Division Four leaders Southend United, a narrow extra time replay defeat against Northampton Town, and being shown live across Europe against Walsall. Ironically though it wasn’t Gould, the club’s most

successful manager, who led the Ducks to their greatest FA Cup achievement, it was his successor Steve Ketteridge in 1994-95. Once again the club became media celebrities as the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration was shown around the world, as Aylesbury went on to reach the Third Round where they lost to Premiership side Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup title to Aylesbury, but it was to be the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United a year later, despite heading the table for long periods. The following season saw United back in administration and fighting for survival both on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. In October 2000, the legendary Hercules took time out from his duties as the club’s Community Development Officer to manage the Ducks, and in his brief spell in charge he secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and extended the club’s proud FA Cup record with a First Round trip to Port Vale.

Homeless and hopeless Carroll decided to cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, and popular local businessman Graham Read took over the club. But in a cruel twist Aylesbury were left homeless after their lease expired. Since that time Aylesbury have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches some 20 miles out of Aylesbury whilst the committee work

2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national prominence twice. First the club was privileged to play a major part in an England get together as the Buckingham Road facilities were used by Sven Goran Eriksson for a media conference and by the squad for a training session. Second the club made their first ever appearance in the FA Trophy semi-finals, where the Ducks were beaten by eventual winners Burscough. For various reasons the club then began to cycle through a string of managers at an average of two a season – namely Chris Boothe, Kevin Wilson, Paul Curtis, Danny Nicholls, Jon Franklin, Tony Thompson and Mark Eaton. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road pitch to a 3G artificial surface – what he described as his ‘last ditch’ idea for creating a viable football club, when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas.

hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ has generated plenty of publicity, but so far, sadly, nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. There are still plenty of reasons to remain positive; a glance to our near neighbours Slough Town, who moved into a new ground in 2016 having left their previous home in 2003, just goes to show that with patience and perseverance it can be done, and Aylesbury United will return to their rightful place eventually. On the pitch the club continued to do remarkably well, going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose last summer when the then manager defected, taking almost the entire playing squad with him. This led to another

tumultuous season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, but due to personal reasons he had to renege on his appointment less than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant, Byron Walton, briefly stepped into the mantle and did a sterling job in assembling a competitive team in such a short space of time. He moved on and former United defender Tony Joyce became the club’s new permanent manager. Unfortunately Joyce was unable to prevent the club’s slide – which had seen them amass just one league win by October – and the club were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League. However, Joyce built a new and strong squad which finished sixth in the league in 2010-11. Season 2011-12 saw further progression in the league with the Ducks eventually finishing fourth after a strong run of results at the tail

end of the season. There was disappointment, however, with the team out of all cup competitions by mid November. Rebuilding for the future The 2012-13 season saw the club competing for the title, being in the top four for the entire season. Finally finishing second to Dunstable Town, gaining promotion to the Southern League courtesy of the FA’s restructuring of the feeder leagues and the additional promotion places that created. The season was capped by securing the Spartan League Premier Division Cup, beating Hadley 3-2 after extra time. The Ducks’ first season back in the Southern league saw them achieve a creditable 12th place finish in a strong division. Other highlights from the season was a much better FA Cup run and notable victories against Southern Premier League opponents Hemel Hempstead, Chesham and Burnham in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup and The Red Insure Cup. The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but made the final of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing 4-0 to Maidenhead United from the Vanarama Conference South. After a disappointing start to the 2015-16 season, Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club and was replaced by Glyn Creaser who had been coach under Tony. In Glyn’s first full season in charge, he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup, before losing at Premier Division St Ives. He also guided the team to 13th position in the table. After two seasons ground sharing

at the ASM Stadium in Thame, a decision was made to return to The Meadow, the home of Chesham United for the 2017-18 season. After a disappointing start to the league campaign, manager Glyn Creaser was relieved of his responsibilities following a 6-1 home defeat against Cambridge City in December 2017, with the team lying second from the bottom of the table. His assistant Ben Williams was appointed caretaker manager in his place, before being appointed in a full time capacity in January. Williams steadied the ship successfully, integrating a number of new young players and developing a great team spirit, which saw the Ducks rise to 13th in the league, winning nine of their last 13 matches. 2019-20 began in promising fashion, with the Ducks unbeaten in the first nine league games, and winning ties in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Despite a slight dip in form, the Ducks remained in the play-offs before the season was curtailed early and voided due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020-21 season suffered the same fate as the previous campaign, abandoned after just two months of action. But that was still long enough for the Ducks to suffer heartbreak in the FA Cup, losing a penalty shoot-out to Moneyfields (in a game that had already seen four penalties) – before bouncing back to win on penalties against Tilbury in the FA Trophy. But with the majority of the squad that finished the season signing on again – along with a few shrewd acquisitions – hopes are high to pick up where the team left off.

Duck walk to Dunstable A tremendous result on and off the pitch as sponsored walk boosts donations to the Cancer Care & Haematology Fund

M

ore than £2,000 has been raised by supporters for the club’s charity partner, the Cancer Care & Haematology Fund, following a sponsored walk to an away game. A group of 10 hardy Ducks – Allan Brace, Andrew Dell, Stuart Andrews, David Horne, Paul Gardner, Lee Cotton, Mark Rickard, Rich Lloyd, Graham Read, and Andy Martin – braved the inclement weather on 30 October, setting off at 7.45am from Buckingham Road in Aylesbury to walk 25 kilometres to Creasey Park in Dunstable – the home ground of the Ducks’ opponents on Saturday afternoon AFC Dunstable. They reached Dunstable in sunnier conditions in just over five hours, rewarded by their hosts with a hot meal

and drinks. The walkers’ were then treated to a fabulous performance from the team, who beat then-second-placed AFC Dunstable 2-1 with two goals from Max Hercules. In addition to raising money for the CCHF, which supports the work of the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, the walk also aimed to draw attention to the fact it is 15 years since the club played its home games in Aylesbury and the continued efforts to #BringTheDucksHome.

Andy Martin, director at Aylesbury United, and chair of supporters’ trust 21st Century Ducks, said: “The generosity of Ducks fans is truly astonishing, and we’re over the moon to be able to raise so much for such a worthy local cause. The amount raised shows that even though the first team has played outside the town for 15 years, we’re a club that remains at the heart of the community.” Richard Lloyd, leader of Aylesbury Town Council and one of the walkers, said: “The show of generosity from fans and the support for this walk makes me ever more determined to deliver the new facilities that Aylesbury desperately needs, and we will continue working towards a Community Stadium for the town”. Donations on behalf of the charity are still welcome, and can be made throughout the season at: www. peoplesfundraising.com/ donation/cchf-and-aylesburyunited

FC Dunstable started life as Old Dunstablians Football Club in 1981. The name Old Dunstablians originated from an organisation formed in 1888 for old boys from Dunstable Grammar School. The most famous member of the club is Hollywood actor Gary Cooper, who attended the school in the early 1900s. When the Grammar School closed and Manshead School opened they took over the mantle but the old boys club was in decline. In 1981 the head teacher was asked if he could re-launch the name, hence the football club was born. By 1988 after its centenary, the Old Dunstablians Club ceased to exist, but the football club carried on in commemoration and to this day still bears the club crest on its badge. The club started in the Dunstable Alliance Football League for a couple of seasons then moved onto the Luton District and South Bedfordshire League in 1983. Still playing at Manshead School with the first team and reserves, success was limited with the 1st team runners up twice in Division One and runners up in the William Pease Cup. While in the Luton League though the 1st team did land the Bedfordshire Junior Cup beating Leighton Athletic on penalties in 1989-90 season. With the club using Dunstable Town Cricket Club as their social base in Bull Pond Lane, the cricket club was looking to move to a larger site in Totternhoe and when the new club was opened in 1994, a football pitch was accommodated, so the football club moved there from Manshead School.

An improvement in facilities gave the club a chance to apply to join the South Midlands League in 1995. Accepted into the then Division One (Premier and Senior Divisions were the higher divisions) the club struggled, as they flirted with being relegated straight back to the Luton League in the first two seasons. Going through new managers every season, they finally started to gain some consolidation and in season 2001-02 the first team finished fourth in the league and won the Division One Cup. The following season they just missed out of the title, which was now named Division Two. Looking to go one better they finally clinched the title the next season and was runners up in the Division Two Cup. Ground Grading issues were now starting to stop the team from getting promoted, as two groundsharing agreements were turned down by the league. This was now the start of a trophy laden period, as the Division Two title again was secured and back-to-back Bedfordshire Senior Trophy’s. Added to that, the Division Two Cup was won again. In 2003-04 the club decided to launch its youth policy and when the Under 15s were runners up in the Chiltern Youth league, it started on the path to work its way through the FA Charter Standard. They achieved adult status in 2003-04. The club then made the decision to change its name to AFC Dunstable (when the prefix AFC was not as prevalent as it is nowadays), so not to get confused with the local rugby club, as the club started to grow and the name was more associated to a football club. The

club kept the name The ODs, as their nickname. The youth setup was awarded the Charter Standard in 2005-06. The next big step was to become a Development Club and a great deal of work saw the club achieve this in 2007. Next up was a goal to become a FA Charter Standard Community Club and 2008 saw the club achieve this. In that time the club has been awarded the Development Club Of The Year in 2008 and the Community Club Of The Year in 2009. The club now runs over 30 teams. The Bedfordshire Football Association approached the club to become partners in the new Creasey Park Community Football Centre in 2008 and this gave them the chance to move the first team to Creasey Park and apply for promotion to Division One for the start of the 2009-10 season, which was accepted. The team finished a very creditable fifth in its first season at the higher level. History was made in the 2010-11 season, as the team was accepted to participate in the FA Vase. A fine run through to the Second Round Proper was achieved. Looking to improve on the league position the previous season, the team went all out for promotion and finished runners up in the league and gained promotion to the Premier Division at their second attempt. The SSMFL Division One Cup was won too. Now with the team in the SSMFL Premier Division and entered the FA Cup for the 2011-12 season, they finished a fine third in the league. In the 2012-13 season the team consolidated in the

Premier Division and finished a respectable eighth. Their run in the FA Cup saw them get through three rounds eventually going out to Northwood after a replay. The team were being managed by the most successful pair in the club’s history; Alex Butler and Dermot Butler, but they decided to step down after nine years at the helm halfway through 2013-14 season. This left the team in disarray, which saw many stalwarts of the team leave. The club decided to appoint current manager Steve Heath and the club went on a re-building exercise. 2014-15 saw the team secure third place in the SSMFL Premier Division as they challenged for the title all season. They also equalled their best run in the FA Vase getting to the Third Round proper. 2015-16 was the season that the team broke all club records. Before clinching the SSMFL Premier Division title, they progressed through 2 rounds of the FA Cup before finally going out to Ryman Premier leaders at the time Leiston 1-0 in the First Qualifying Round. The FA Vase was a great ride as the team made it to the Fourth Round proper. Unfortunately, we drew phoenix club Salisbury who had competed in the Conference Premier only two seasons previous but had been demoted to step 5. Going out 3-0, Salisbury made it all the way to the semi-final. The league campaign was an unbelievable roller coaster ride. As the season got underway, it was becoming

apparent that quite a few teams were vying for the title. As the season reached October, only five points separated the top six. By Christmas it looked like London Colney were starting to break away going five points clear. The chasing pack were bunching up behind as only six points was the difference between second and seventh. When the team lost to a lastminute penalty to Biggleswade United on 2 January, they went eight points behind London Colney and it looked like the title ambitions had faded. That would be the last time AFC tasted defeat in the league. Hoddesdon Town were now becoming a title contender and it was a three-horse race. With seven games left, the team went top of the league and never looked back and won the league by 13 points. The 2016-17 season saw them compete in the Southern League Central Division, a position they never ever thought they would see the club at. They competed nearly all season in a playoff place but just missed out by three points. The team though did pick up some silverware winning the prestigious Bedfordshire Senior Cup 2-0 against Dunstable Town at Kenilworth Road. The beginning of this season, the Bedfordshire Premier Cup was also won. After only their second season at step 4, 2017-18 saw them top the table at the start of the season. They occupied a play-off place all season, which in the end saw them finish fifth. So, a semi-final play-off berth was achieved and they came up against Hartley Wintney. A 2-0 loss

in North Hampshire ended their season but what a great experience it was. 2018-19 season saw them make it three years in succession to play at step 4. It was probably their most challenging as they stuttered at the start of the season. At Christmas they were flirting with relegation but turned the corner and went on a decent run that saw them looking at an outside chance of a play-off spot, but they fell away and finished 10th. With the club firmly established at step 4 everyone is looking forward to the 202122 season and the challenges that it will bring.

Opposition profiles Jamie Head Jamie returns to the club having had a spell away from Creasey Park at clubs including Bedford Town and Cambridge City. He is another successful product of the AFC Dunstable youth setup. Ryan Frater A highly experienced player, who has many clubs to his name. A great signing for the club in the 2018-19 season. Frater picked up a championship medal for Royston Town after the club won the Evo-Stik Southern League Central three seasons ago. Lewis Ferrell Signed for AFC in the summer of 2021 having had spells at clubs including Biggleswade Town and Braintree Town. Has already put in a series of fine performances in pre-season. Not afraid to put the boot in and will offer both experience and stability to the defensive line. Newman Carney Joined AFC on a month’s loan from Dunstable Town at the beginning of 2014 but decided to stay with the club. An ex-professional with Luton Town when he was 18, he is one of the youngest players to represent the Hatters. Newman is one of three ex-Luton Town players in the squad. Luke Abraham This will be Luke’s third season back with AFC after a four season stay at Arlesey Town. Before that, he has had

22

an array of clubs including Aylesbury FC, Chesham United and Dunstable Town. Alasan Ann Ann spent the past three years at York University studying physiotherapy. While in York he played for Selby Town of the Northern Counties East league. Has already played in several positions and his versatility will make him a key member of the team this year. Sam McClelland Sam is another that is no stranger to Creasey Park as he too is a product of the AFC Dunstable youth setup. Returned to the club last season after playing for Dunstable Town. Gedeon Okito Gedeon is an energetic left back who played against us for Cambridge City in a pre-season friendly last season. Previous clubs include Dunstable Town and Banbury United. Adds competition to an already strong defensive unit. Brett Longden Brett returned to AFC from Bedford Town last season, where he had spent the past couple of seasons, having signed for them from us in the close season of 2018. A combative right back, his previous clubs include St Ives Town, Chesham United, St Neots Town and Luton Town. Tom Silford Tom returned to the ODs in December 2021 after a spell away playing for step

5 Leighton Town. Can play in several positions and his versatility could be key this season. Christian Tavernier Another player who has spent time at Luton Town. Christian joined the club after five years at Arlesey Town, where he was a regular goal scorer. Another elegant player, Christian will be looking to build on the foundations he laid last season. Jack Harvey Jack signed in pre-season from Dunstable Town, after impressing in a pre-season friendly playing against AFC. Tough-tackling, hard-working midfielder, it is difficult to believe Jack is so young with the mature performances he regularly puts in. Kieran Hamilton Kieran is a pacy winger that opened his AFC goalscoring account during pre-season. Will be looking to take that form into the regular season. Previous clubs include Arlesey Town. Ben Farrell Ben signed for AFC on the eve of the 2021-22 season. Having made more than 100 appearances for AFC Rushden & Diamonds, he will add valuable experience to the AFC Dunstable midfield. Previous clubs include Weymouth, Cambridge City and St Neots Town. Lewis Smith Lewis signed for AFC in August 2021, having previously played

for Stevenage. Charlie Pattison Charlie returned to the ODs after a very short spell at Banbury United. Having played for MK Dons his return will add to the midfield options available to the manager. BJ Christie The clubs record goal scorer with more than 250 goals to his name and now record appearance maker. First turned out for the club at 15. Has had a couple of spells away from the club but always returns. As you can imagine, many clubs chase his signature in close season. Saul Williams Saul signed for the ODs in February 2022, having started the season at Premier side Kings Langley. Williams adds to the attacking options available to AFC. Nathan Frater Nathan returned to the ODs after a spell away playing for league rivals Barton Rovers. Brings experience and power to the attacking line. Steve Heath, manager Steve joined the club midway through the 2013-14 season. The first team was in disarray due to the former management duo resigning. Many of the players decided to leave, so Steve had a massive rebuilding job to do. He guided the team to a mid-table position in the SSMFL Premier Division and handed so many youngsters first team debuts. 2014-15 season saw him re-strengthen the side which saw us finish third in the league. The

following season the club went all out to clinch the Premier Division title and success was achieved. In Steve’s and the club’s first attempt at step 4, a very respectful seventh place was secured, and the Bedfordshire Senior Cup was won. At the beginning of this 2017-18, a 2-0 win over Luton Town saw the club lift the Bedfordshire Premier Cup. In the 2018-19 season Steve guided the club to fifth in the league and a play-off spot. A defeat in the semi-final did not take away from what he achieved. Leon Cashman, assistant manager Leon recently retired from the game and as he is so highly thought of, he naturally became a coach at AFC before being announced as assistant manager in the summer of 2021. A former AFC Dunstable player, he knows the club as well as anyone. Former playing clubs include Corby Town and Havant & Waterlooville. Has also served in and represented the Royal Navy at football. Matt Langston, coach Langers had a very impressive non-league playing career. He turned out for many Conference clubs (now National League). He was made famous for a day, when he scored the only goal for Histon against Leeds United in the FA Cup, which Histon won 1-0 back in 2008-09, which was televised live on ITV.
