ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this game against Barton Rovers. The Rovers arrive here in strong form, having won their past four league games – including victories over fellow playoff contenders Yaxley and Thame United. They’ve been propelled up the league by the excellent goal-scoring form of former Duck Nathan Tshikuna, who is currently on loan from Rushden

cracking goals from Max Hercules, Ollie Hogg and Jake Bewley, has seen us extend our advantage over our play-off rivals to five points.

The previous meeting between the sides this season saw the Ducks win 4-2, so a repeat of that result would be welcomed by the home fans.

Our postponed game against St Neots Town at The Meadow has now been rescheduled for next Wednesday evening 18 March. Hopefully a third consecutive game at home will result in a winning streak.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors B

arton Rovers have their home in Bartonle-Clay, a village just north of Luton. Formed in 1898 the club played in inter-village football until 1946 when they joined the Luton and District League. Progress was such that in 1954 they were accepted into the South Midlands League.

In 1979 the Rovers gained election to the Isthmian league. Barry Reed retired at the end of the 1982-83 season having achieved the clubs highest position of third. He also fulfilled his greatest wish to see Barton Rovers play in the first round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980.

They enjoyed limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined the club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964-65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep of the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy in their final season. 1978 saw the club reach the FA Vase final with a crowd of 16,391 watching the team lose 2-1 to Blue Star of Newcastle at Wembley.

In 1990-91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two. May 1993 saw the appointment of Gordon Taylor. His first season saw him guide the Rovers to fourth spot, the club’s highest position since 1983. This platform was built upon in 1994-95, and Taylor steered the Rovers into runners-up position behind champions Thame United. But at Christmas it was realised the club’s financial position was precarious, and drastic action was needed to cut costs. The decision to cut the playing budget to nil was not easy, but necessary to ensure the club’s survival. This body blow has destroyed many a club before but the loyalty shown by

Taylor and the bulk of the playing squad cannot be disputed. Playing the best football of the season they swept to nine straight victories, that put Barton top of the table. A return to form in April culminated in promotion in the penultimate match. This took Barton Rovers into the first division of the Isthmian League for the first time.

secured the Bedfordshire Senior Cup with a 4-0 victory over Potton United. In a memorable 1998-99 season Barton reached three cup finals. They retained the Bedfordshire Senior Cup, won the South Midlands Floodlight Cup, but missed out on a treble losing the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final.

Season 1996-97 saw Barton top the Division One table twice in September. But a run of seven matches without a win saw Gordon Taylor tender his resignation in October 1996. The club selected Gordon Brown as their new manager. The transitional period that followed saw a run of 13 games without a win until a vital 2-1 success at fellow strugglers Canvey Island in February 1997. With the duck broken, results improved and the Rovers pulled themselves away from danger.

The start of the 201011 season saw Barton Rovers in the Southern Football League, this time in the newly created Central Division. Former player Dan Kennoy was recruited as manager and assembled a vibrant squad that ended the season in 12th position. The 2011-12 season started with optimism. It’s fair to say it didn’t quite go as planned. Just four points from the opening nine games and an FA Cup defeat saw the young manager feeling the pressure. Then just one defeat in the next nine league games saw the confidence rise as well as the league position, and ended the season in 11th place, Kennoy stayed on in 2012-13 guiding the

Brown hoped his second season would see his team improve, and this was achieved in 199798 with a new record finish of 16th. Barton also

side to a mid-table finish. Arguably Rovers had their best season for many years in 2013-14. A last day of the season defeat saw the side finish sixth and miss out on the playoffs by just three points. Former players Richard Wilmot and Wes Byrne took the helm in 2014-15, achieving a club best of beaten play-off finalists, losing to Bedworth United 2-0. The 2015-16 season saw another a new management team of Matt Endersby and Jon Reed take the reins, but neither manager stayed to the end of the campaign. Former player Jimmy Gray took over for the promotion chase in 201617. Again it was close but no cigar as Rovers lost in the play-off final against Farnborough. The 2-0 loss did not reflect the game but goals are all that matter. Barton regrouped for 2017-18, with Mark Boyce moving up to the hot seat, but after a poor run of results he was replaced after 16 games by ex-Dunstable Town manager and another former Barton player Tony Fontanelle.
