Welcome

G

ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for the final home game of the season against Barton Rovers. You join us for this important clash in the battle for 13th, and the pride and prestige that comes with it. The Ducks could leapfrog Kempston Rovers with victory today – depending on the Walnuts’ result away against Yaxley. A win for Barton will see them move above United. Both sides are in wretched form. The Ducks have one win in the past eight, and Rovers haven’t won at all in the same number of games, so both will be desperate to end this season on a high. About Aylesbury United

A

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.

Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

B

arton Rovers have their home in Bartonle-Clay, a village just north of Luton. Formed in 1898 the club played in inter-village football until 1946 when they joined the Luton and District League. Progress was such that in 1954 they were accepted into the South Midlands League. They enjoyed only limited success until 1964 when former Leicester City and Luton Town defender Barry Reed joined the club as manager. After winning promotion to the Premier Division in 1964-65 the club was never out of the top three until leaving the league in 1979, winning the title eight seasons out of nine and making a clean sweep of the Premier Division title, the Senior Section Challenge Trophy, the Reserve Division title and the Reserve Section Challenge Trophy in their final season. 1978 saw the club reach the FA Vase final with a crowd of 16,391 watching Barton Rovers lose 2-1 to Blue Star of Newcastle at Wembley.

In 1979 The Rovers gained election to the Isthmian league. Barry Reed retired at the end of the 1982-83 season having achieved the clubs highest position of third. He also fulfilled his greatest wish to see Barton Rovers play in the First Round proper of the FA Cup, which was achieved in 1980 when the Rovers lost 2-0 to Torquay United. In 1990-91, Rovers qualified for the new Division Two. May 1993 saw the appointment of Gordon Taylor. His first season saw him guide the Rovers to fourth spot, the club’s highest position since 1983. This platform was built upon in season 1994-95, and Taylor steered the Rovers into runners-up position behind champions Thame United. But it was realised at Christmas that the club’s financial position was precarious, and drastic action was needed to cut costs. The decision to cut the playing budget to nil was not easy, but a necessary evil to ensure the club’s survival.

This body blow has destroyed many a club before but the loyalty shown by Taylor and the bulk of the playing squad cannot be disputed. Playing the best football of the season they swept to nine straight victories, that put Barton top of the table. A return to form in April culminated in promotion being gained in the penultimate match. This took Barton Rovers into the first division of the Isthmian League for the first time. Season 1996-97 saw Barton top the Division One table twice in September. But a run of seven matches without a win saw Gordon Taylor tender his resignation in October 1996. The club selected Gordon Brown as their new manager. The transitional period that followed saw a run of 13 games without a win until a vital 2-1 success at fellow strugglers Canvey Island in February 1997. With the ‘duck’ broken, results improved and the Rovers pulled themselves away from the danger zone. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9

Today’s visitors Brown hoped his second season would see his team improve, and this was achieved in 1997-98 with a new record finish of 16th. Barton also secured the Bedfordshire Senior Cup with a 4-0 victory over Potton United. The club appointed former Arsenal and Luton Town player lan Allinson in April 1998. Another record season was recorded, with 15th a new high. To cap a memorable season Barton reached three cup finals. The Bedfordshire Senior Cup was retained with a 3-0 win over Bedford Town, and the South Midlands Floodlight Cup was won for the first time, with a 1-0 win over Hemel Hempstead Town. Barton missed out on a cup treble, losing the Hinchingbrooke Cup Final 2-1 to Spalding United. The start of the 2010-11 season saw Barton Rovers in the Southern Football League, this time in the newly created Central Division. Former Rovers player Dan Kennoy was recruited as manager and assembled a vibrant 10 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

squad that ended the season in 12th position. The 2011-12 season started with an air of optimism. It’s fair to say it didn’t quite go as planned. Just four points from the opening nine games and an FA Cup defeat saw the young manager feeling the pressure. Then just one defeat in the next nine league games saw the confidence rise as well as the league position, and ended the season in 11th place, Kennoy stayed on for another crack at the helm in 2012-13 guiding the side to a mid-table finish. The season ended with silverware in the shape of the North Beds Charity Cup. Arguably Rovers had their best season for many years in 2013-14. A last day of the season defeat saw the side finish sixth and miss out on the play-offs by just three points. This was coupled by back-to-back North Beds Charity Cup wins. Kennoy’s decision to stand down at the end of the 2014-15 season saw new managers and former players Richard Wilmot

and Wes Byrne take the helm. Wilmot and Byrne achieved a club best of beaten play-off finalists, losing to Bedworth United 2-0 but lifting the Beds Senior cup with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Biggleswade Town. The 2015-16 season saw another a new management team of Matt Endersby and Jon Reed take the reins. Sadly the season was a write-off with neither manager staying to the end of the campaign. But the club did retain the Beds Senior Cup with a 2-1 win overs AFC Dunstable. Former player Jimmy Gray took over for the promotion chase in 2016-17. Again it was close but no cigar as Rovers lost in the play-off final against Farnborough. The 2-0 loss did not reflect the game but goals are all that matter. Barton regrouped for 2017-18, with Mark Boyce moving up to the hot seat, but after a poor run of results he was replaced after 16 games by ex-Dunstable Town manager and another former Barton player Tony Fontanelle.

Visitor profiles Gary Malone A young Goalkeeper with a huge amount of experience for such a young age. Has played in the Conference South and Southern Premier. Dan Gould A young Goalkeeper with bags of potential. A product of the Beds FA youth set-up. A very agile shot stopper who commands his area. Paul Andrews The club captain is edging ever closer to his testimonial season with the club. He has been a great servant at centre half for many seasons. He is very strong in the tackle, dominant in the air and has the pace to get back and cover. Matt Hall An accomplished defender who had Premiership upbringing at Watford. Matt joined Barton Rovers in 2018-19 from Chesham United and has been ever present since.

12 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

Gerardo Smaldone Gerardo rejoined Rovers after spending last season in the Southern Premier with Chesham United. Robbie Goodman Robbie joined Barton Rovers during 2018-19 from Kempston Rovers where he was voted player of the year for the 2017-18 season. Quickly got into his groove at Rovers and is a great addition to the squad. Garry Jones Accomplished left sided defender who also can play in the centre of defence. Has been a revelation since joining Barton Rovers from Berkhamsted Town. Stefan Bailey Stef previously graced the Championship for QPR. Troubled by injuries, he found his way in nonleague football with the likes of Wealdstone. Now living locally Stef is the midfield general and wins his fair share of battles in the middle of the park.

Sam Gibson Sam has been a real find after joining us for preseason from the highly successful Biggleswade Town youth team. Sam has established himself as a first team player and has put in some performances that are ahead of his young age. Mason Spence Another late arrival in the 2018-19 season having joined from Kempston Rovers. The central midfielder has already played at a higher level within the non-league pyramid having plied his trade at MK Dons, and has a Wales Under-19 cap to his name. Drew Phillips Drew is a big mobile centre forward who causes centre halves all sorts of trouble by running in behind and strong in the air. He gained good experience playing for the Nike academy after leaving Barnet.

Visitor profiles Jimmy Hartley Jimmy is an exciting, tricky wide player or happy playing down the middle. Since coming to the club he has worked hard and showcased his talent. He has been one of the surprise packages and positive players, who has stood out in is preseason campaign. He has good pace, power and an eye for goal. Patrick Tshilaka Patrick joined Barton Rovers from Hitchin Town during the 201819 season and is a very exciting prospect. A wide player with pace to burn and can score a goal or two. Victor Osobu Strong, lively forward with a great eye for goal. Bags of pace and energy and loves a challenge. Vic is a real exciting player that has also taken on the mantle of being one of the more senior members of the group to share on his vast knowledge of the game.

Charlie Clayton Charlie is a lively player with an eye for goal. He scored more than 30 goals for Crawley Green which earned him numerous accolades and a move to AFC Dunstable. Charlie knows the current management and that swayed in him to join Barton Rovers during the 2018-19 season. One to watch in the future and will guarantee goals wherever he plays. Connor Vincent Connor rejoined Barton Rovers in the 2018-19 season and is a real coup for the club. Connor has been plying his trade in the Southern Premier with local sides Biggleswade Town and Hitchin Town. A strong player with an eye for goal who we know will shoot us up the table.

Leon Gutzmore, assistant manager ‘Gutz’ has joined the management team after a long and established playing career with clubs including Cambridge United, Billericay and Aldershot. After retiring from football Leon has had successful management spells at Arlesey Town and Knebworth. Ryan Wiffin, coach Ryan joined Rovers from fellow league side Aylesbury FC after spending time playing there before joining Danny Gordon on the Moles’ coaching staff. Ryan has had an instant impact on the coaching set up at the club.

Tony Fontenelle, manager Tony stepped up from assistant manager into the number one seat after a very successful spell at Dunstable Town. He has good experience from a long playing career and vast technical knowledge of the game. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 13
