ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this game against Bedford Town. Our opponents today are on a rotten run of form, having lost their past six league matches. Having dispensed with the services of manager Nathan Abbey halfway through January, they appointed Eynesbury Rovers boss Mark Ducket, who played a number of games for the Ducks at the turn of the century
(see p13). Their previous match saw them score four at home and still end up on the losing side, conceding five to North Leigh. However, our record against the Eagles is frankly appalling. We haven’t beaten them since 2016, conceding at least three goals each time. The point secured when the two sides met at The Eyrie was our first against them in six matches. Hopefully the Ducks can summon

More details will be finalised nearer the time, including how to donate – along with the pub walkers will be stopping at for a refreshing beverage en route.
Two previous sponsored walks earned a combined total of more than £1700 for the chosen charities.
The walk will start at Buckingham Road before leisurely 13.5 mile stroll along the canal all the way to Broadwater, Berkhamsted to cheer the Ducks on in the afternoon’s match. Two previous sponsored walks earned a combined total
The benefit will not only be raising money for a fantastic local charity, but also not having to try and find a parking space at the ground which is notoriously difficult!
There are still a few #BringTheDucksHome window stickers available, priced at a very reasonable £3 each.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.
a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.
Fame and the FA Cup
Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.
Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.
That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.
Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then
Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national
prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,
going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.
The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.
This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.
Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.
Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.
Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors B
edford Town were founded in 1908 and in the early years they played in the United Counties League and its predecessors, the Northampton League and Northampton Alliance. In 1945, The Eagles moved to the Southern League but achieved little during its first seasons. It was not until 1955-56 the Eagles began the first of their great cup runs which would see them achieve national fame as ‘giant killers’ with wins over league opposition including Watford, Norwich, Newcastle, Exeter, Brighton and Oxford 1-0. Possibly their greatest achievement was drawing 2-2 with Arsenal at Highbury watched by a crowd of over 55,000. After 74 years the end came in May 1982 when the owners of the football ground in Queens Park exercised their right to terminate the lease and the Club was wound up when plans to build a new stadium failed. On the 5 May 1989, a group of Eagles
supporters met to start a campaign to reform the club. They obtained council permission to play their home games on a public pitch in Queens Park. A number of early wins put them on the way to a runaway championship which meant the Club had to find its own ground in order to be promoted. The council finally decided a site at Meadow Lane, Cardington, would be the most appropriate and with financial support from the council and much hard work from supporters and committee members, the New Eyrie was ready for the opening game against Peterborough United watched by a crowd of more than 3,000. In 2000-01 The Eagles finished runners-up in Ryman Division One, gaining promotion to the Premier Division. The club also became a PLC at the beginning of the season and David Howell took over as chairman. The next season’s FA Cup campaign was memorable, reaching the First Round proper.

In front of the Match of the Day cameras the Eagles drew 0-0 at home to second division Peterborough United and took the ‘Posh’ to a replay in front of 5,500 people. The club moved into its new facilities at the beginning of the 200506 season with a new function room and football facilities up to National Conference standard. The team earned a play-off final spot at Chippenham. The Eagles won 3-2 reaching the Nationwide South, the highest standard the club have played in since reformation. Hopes were high in 201516, with Dan Kennoy having taken over in the Summer. But a poor September led to Kennoy and his management team resigning. The management committee quickly appointed Jon Taylor to the role of manager, who led the Eagles to a solid 14th position finish. Taylor assembled a strong looking squad for 201617 and the Eagles earned an eighth place finish.
The 2017-18 season started with a disappointing defeat at Uxbridge but wins against Aylesbury United and Swaffham Town in the FA Cup meant the Eagles finished August on a high. The club spent most of the autumn in midtable and Jon Taylor continued to add to his squad. At the start of 2018, former Histon coach and St Ives Assistant Manager Jack Cassidy was brought into the management team. At the end of January 2018, the club was taken over, ending 17 years of ownership under David Howell. Local businessmen David and Jon Taylor headed a consortium including Jason Brown, Ashley Jones, Doug Nurse and Alan Gudjin who took over tenure at the Eyrie. The Eagles went on a solid run from January, but were unable to reach the playoffs, falling short to finish in 8th place. After a summer of rebuilding, the new ownership began to stamp their vision for the Eagles to progress. A number of former league players were signed, and
the Eagles started with three wins from three. A reasonable spring saw the Eagles finish fourth and qualify for the playoffs, going down 5-3 to Corby Town in the semi-final. This season started with a hard fought 2-1 win at home to Thame United. However, in the following week, disappointment hit with a hammering defeat at Berkhamsted and exiting the FA Cup to Deeping Rangers. In mid-October, the club were knocked out of the League Cup at Biggleswade Town, before losing at Carlton Town in the FA Trophy. There was sadness on 13 October 2019, when owner and director David Taylor passed away. Manager Jon Taylor was promoted to director, and Nathan Abbey took on full responsibility of the management of players at the club. Nathan won his first game in charge, with a 2-1 win at Kempston Rovers. However, a run of seven defeats in nine games led to Nathan departing and Mark Ducket joined as manager, his first game being a defeat at Yaxley.
