Welcome
G
ood afternoon and welcome back to The Meadow for today’s league match against Bedford Town. United were well beaten 3-0 when these two teams met in October, so the Ducks will hope for a better performance in front of a home crowd after two away games. The Eagles lost their match last saturday against Kempston Rovers 1-0, but had won their three fixtures prior to that. They’ll want to get back in the habit of winning to boost their chance of the play-offs. Bedford are one of six teams within four points of each other fighting for the final promotion place. Thame United are in the box seat currently on 40 points having played 30 games, Aylesbury United FC 01296 487367 info@aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk @aylesburyutdfc @aylesburyunitedfc flic.kr/aylesburyunited
Tre Mitford has been on target in the previous two matches
with Bedford two points behind in seventh place. Without wishing to put to mockers on today’s game, a draw between the two clubs looks unlikely – Bedford have only tied two matches all season, and the Ducks only having drawn five.

About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

Today’s visitors
B
edford Town was founded in 1908 and in the early years they played in the United Counties League and its predecessors, the Northampton League and Northampton Alliance. In 1945, The Eagles moved to the Southern League but achieved little during its first seasons. It was not until 1955-56 the Eagles began the first of their great cup runs which would see them achieve national fame as ‘giant killers’ with wins over league opposition including Watford, Norwich, Newcastle, Exeter, Brighton and Oxford 1-0. Possibly their greatest achievement was drawing 2-2 with Arsenal at Highbury watched by a crowd of over 55,000. After 74 years the end came in May 1982 when the owners of the football ground in Queens Park exercised their right to terminate the lease and the Club was wound up when plans to build a new stadium failed. On the 5 May 1989, a group of Eagles supporters met to start
a campaign to reform the club. They obtained council permission to play their home games on a public pitch in Queens Park. A number of early wins put them on the way to a runaway championship which meant the Club had to find its own ground in order to be promoted. The council finally decided a site at Meadow Lane, Cardington, would be the most appropriate and with financial support from the council and much hard work from supporters and committee members, the New Eyrie was ready for the opening game against Peterborough United watched by a crowd of more than 3,000. In 2000-01 The Eagles finished runners-up in Ryman Division One, gaining promotion to the Premier Division. The club also became a PLC at the beginning of the season and David Howell took over as chairman. The next season’s FA Cup campaign was memorable, reaching the First Round proper. In front of the Match of the Day cameras the
Eagles drew 0-0 at home to Second Division Peterborough United and took the ‘Posh’ to a replay in front of over 5,500 people. The club moved into its new facilities at the beginning of the 200506 season with a new function room and football facilities up to National Conference standard. The team earned a play-off final spot at Chippenham. The Eagles won 3-2 reaching the Nationwide South, the highest standard the club have played in since reformation. Hopes were high in 201516, with Dan Kennoy having taken over in the Summer and assembled a reasonable squad throughout preseason. The Eagles started well with progression in the FA Cup and 10 points from the first five league games. But a poor September lead to Kennoy and his management team resigning. The management committee acted quickly and appointed Jon Taylor to the role of manager, aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
Today’s visitors where he was joined by former Eagles player Paul Daniels. Taylor led the Eagles to a solid 14th position finish. After a hard working Summer, Taylor assembled a strong looking squad for 201617 that started preseason well with victories against Stevenage FC and Peterborough United XIs. Former Dunstable Town manager Darren Croft joined as assistant manager and John Bell followed as physio. The league season started disappointingly with defeats against Farnborough, Royston, Northwood and exiting the FA Cup to AFC Dunstable. A strong league run continued through late September and October, but this did include a disappointing 4-0 loss at Hanwell Town in the FA Trophy. The club lost again at Hanwell Town in the league on 10 December, but then went on a 20 game unbeaten run. This finished in disappointing fashion at Marlow in early April but had propelled the Eagles up to a respectable eighth 10 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk
place finish. The 2017-18 season started with a disappointing defeat at Uxbridge but wins against Aylesbury United and Swaffham Town in the FA Cup meant the Eagles finished August on a high. The club spent most of the autumn in midtable and Jon Taylor continued to add to his squad. At the start of 2018, former Histon coach and St Ives Assistant Manager Jack Cassidy was brought into the management team. At the end of January 2018, the club was taken over, ending 17 years of ownership under David Howell. Local businessmen David and Jon Taylor headed a consortium including Jason Brown, Ashley Jones, Doug Nurse and Alan Gudjin who took over tenure at the Eyrie. The Eagles went on a solid run from January, but were unable to reach the playoffs, falling short to finish in 8th place. After a summer of rebuilding on and off the pitch, the new ownership began to stamp their
vision for the Eagles to progress this season. A number of former league players were signed, and the Eagles started with three wins from three against Kidlington, Yaxley and Dereham. A strong FA Cup run continued, defeating Bostik Premier side Enfield Town, before narrowly going out to AFC Telford away in late September. Cup football took priority in the autumn, as the Eagles went on an incredible run in the FA Trophy, reaching the first round. The journey involved five ties, three replays, knocking out two Bostik Premier League sides on the way with Cheshunt, Tilbury, Kingstonian, Chipstead and Worthing all falling to Town as their March to the first round proper of the trophy continued. Due to the large amount of cup football, the Eagles had only played 10 league fixtures by 1 December, and they sat in eighth place at this point, albeit with a number of games in hand over the play-off sitting sides.
