ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this match against Bedworth United. It’s been a while since the two sides met, with the most recent meetings in the 2014-15 season. The Ducks lost both those games, conceding four on both occasions. Bedworth finished fourth that season, qualifying for the play-offs and beating Barton Rovers in the final to earn promotion

to the Southern League Premier Central. They were relegated the following season, and ended up in the Norther Premier Division One Central. Another play-off victory, this time against Stamford, saw them promoted once more, only to be relegated last season returning them to the same league as us. The Greenbacks are currently in 13th position. They were 3-1 up in their previous

match at home against Bedford Town last Saturday, only to draw 3-3 at the final whistle. Meanwhile, the Ducks notched up a hard-fought 1-0 win away at St Neots Town. Don’t forget, the 21CD Meet the Manager and Quiz Night takes place at Rivets Social Club on Monday, starting at 7.30pm. We hope to see as many fans there as possible.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors T

he first Bedworth Town football club was formed in 1895. They became founder members of the Nuneaton and District League in 1898, but had disbanded by 1900. Finishing runners up in the Second Division of the Coventry and North Warwickshire League in the 1904-05 season, the ECS changed their name to Bedworth Town on winning promotion and existed until the early 1920s. A third club came on the scene in 1925, when Collycroft United, formed in 1916, became the third team to name themselves Bedworth Town, and were the most successful of the pre-war clubs. The last club to become Bedworth Town was formed in 1947, and secured membership of the Birmingham Combination. They won the championship in 1948-49 and 1949-50 seasons, were defeated in the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup in 1950.

For season 1954-55, Bedworth joined the Birmingham League and qualified for the Northern Section for the league’s inaugural First Division. A lack of success and problems off the field saw Bedworth Town change their name to Bedworth United in 1968. In 1972 they obtained membership for the Southern League Division One North. In their first season they finished bottom, but this was only to be a setback as they made rapid strides into the Premier Division when the league was reformed in 1982. On 23 February 1982, a crowd of 5,172 – then a record for the Southern League – turned up at their Oval ground to watch them beat Nuneaton Borough 1-0 to go top of the league. In the Premier Division, they finished fifth in 1982-83, and were stable in this league until a poor run saw them relegated in 1988-89. After becoming Bedworth United, they won the Birmingham Senior Cup on three occasions in the 1980s and were

beaten finalists to West Bromwich Albion in the 1987-88 season. The appointment of St Lucia-born Brendan Phillips as manager in 1990 launched a revival in the club’s fortunes. From 1990 to 1997, the Greenbacks pushed for promotion back to the Southern League’s top flight and enjoyed a top six finish in four of the next five seasons. Phillips moved to Stafford Rangers during the 199293 season but progress continued under the helm of former Notts County midfielder Dean Thomas. Unfortunately, in achieving a third place finish in 1995-96, the club overstretched itself financially. The club faced possible closure until a group of die-hards acted to keep the club alive. The Greenbacks occupied a bottom half finish for 14 seasons until the appointment in May 2011, of a forwardthinking management team led by Steve Farmer, assistant Adam Cooper, and the experienced Ian Roper on the field. In his first season, Farmer

led them to their first promotion in their 65year semi-professional history. Having finished third, they won promotion after beating Beaconsfield SYCOB 3-1 in the playoff final. Sadly, the club lasted just one season in the Premier Division as they finished in 21st going down on goal difference. In 2013-14 current manager Stuart Storer along with Andy Penny as his assistant joined the Greenbacks from Hinckley United. After a difficult start they produced a settled squad and staved off relegation. In Storer’s his first full season in charge the club once again won promotion after a 2-0 win over Barton Rovers in the play-off final, after finishing fourth. This was the clubs first season on its new artificial grass pitch. Back in the Premier Division, the 2015-16 season started slowly with a number of changes to playing staff made up until Christmas. The club pushed to avoid relegation but ultimately

were unsuccessful, although this was due to the poor start to the season. 2016-17 saw the club moved to the Northern Premier League Division 1 South. A season that saw a number of injury problems and changes in playing staff saw a midtable finish. But the club did have a successful run in the FA Cup, eventually losing to National League side Curzon Ashton. 2017-18 saw the team struggle with injuries and Storer was unable to field the same team for two games in a row. But come Christmas results started to improve and the Greenbacks finished fourth and made the play-offs. They beat Chasetown 2-1 in the semi final, booking a place in the final against Stamford. Bedworth won 2-1 after extra time, having conceding seven minutes into injury time. Unfortunately promotion to the Evo Stick Souther Premier Central was short-lived and the team was relegated back to step four at the end of the 2018-19 season.
