3pm, Saturday 15 December 2018 The Meadow, Chesham Evo-Stik League South Division One Central

Welcome

G

ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for today’s home game against Berkhamsted. This is the second meeting between the two sides this season, with Berkhamsted having run out 2-0 winners eariler this season when the clubs met in the City Security Services League Challenge Cup, with two goals from Matt Bateman. The Ducks will undoubtedly want to reverse that scoreline this afternoon, but that’ll be no easy task against a team in the play-off positions in the table. Berkhamsted have enjoyed victories over AFC Dunstable, Coleshill Town and Aylesbury FC recently so will certainly prove strong opposition. About Aylesbury United

A

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.

Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

Today’s visitors

B

erkhamsted FC was formed in 2009. The club nickname is the Comrades, after Berkhamsted Comrades which was the name of the football club formed in the town by servicemen returning from the First World War. It later changed its name to Berkhamsted Town, who folded for financial reasons in early 2009. The club appointed experienced manager Micky Vipond and won the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Division 2 title in its first season, losing only once each at home and away. The team were champions again in 2010-11, this time by 15 points and were unbeaten at home in the league. This earned the team a second successive promotion and movement up to the Premier division, where the club stayed for six years. The total of 107 points was the highest in the season for any club in the non-league pyramid, prompting the Herts FA to award the club the prestigious Sir Stanley Rous Memorial Trophy.

The team won promotion to the Southern League by finishing Premier Division runners-up in 2018. 2011 saw the club enter the FA Cup and FA Youth Cup for the first time. The FA Cup tie with St Albans City was goalless at Clarence Park, but an exit came in the replay at Broadwater. In 2012 they went out to Metropolitan Police in the second qualifying round. 2013 brought home wins over AFC Dunstable and Harefield United, but defeat at Daventry Town. In 2014 Ashford Town eliminated the club, and in 2015 the Comrades won against Hanworth Villa but went out to Barton Rovers. In 2016 Berko went out to Cogenhoe United. Last season they overcame Crawley Green but went out 4-1 at home to Slough Town in front of 366 fans. This season saw victories at Tring Athletic and Thame United but defeat to Coggeshall Town. Three years ago Berkhamsted reached the last 16 of the FA Vase, going out to eventual

winners Morpeth Town. They got there with six wins earning the club the Houghton Regis Trophy. Two years ago they reached the last 32 but went out at Hinckley AFC. Berko has reached cup finals in each of the past six seasons. Last season they lost the St Mary’s Cup final to Leverstock Green. The previous year they beat Tring Athletic 3-2 in the Herts Charity Shield. They won their first cup in 2013 beating Tring Athletic in the St Mary’s Cup final. In 2015 they landed the Premier Division Cup, beating Colney Heath after a penalty shoot-out. In 2014 they were on the wrong end of a shoot-out to Ampthill Town in the final. Three seasons ago Berko were runners-up 4-3 to Welwyn Garden City in the final of the Challenge Trophy. 201415 was their best run in the Herts Senior Cup beating three SSMFL Premier Division sides before losing in the semi-final 2-1 at home to Conference South side Hemel Hempstead Town. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
