ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this game against Biggleswade. As disappointing as last Saturday’s demolition at the hands of league leaders Corby Town was, one of the great things about football is you never have to wait too long for an opportunity to bounce back. This afternoon’s game is just such an occasion, and against the team that ended our

unbeaten start to the season. The Ducks played the whole of the second half with 10 men following Dave O’Connor’s red card, but couldn’t force an equaliser despite pressure on the Biggleswade goal. Biggleswade’s start to the year has been mostly positive, with two victories – against Yaxley on New Year’s Day and AFC Dunstable last weekend – set against a narrow 1-0 away loss at
promotion chasing Welwyn Garden City. This form may reflect a keenness to get back on the pitch having not played a league game between 30 November and 28 December. We’re back in action at The Meadow this Wednesday, as we take on Didcot Town for the third time this season in the Berks and Bucks Cup.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.
a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.
Fame and the FA Cup
Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.
Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.
That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.
Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then
Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national
prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,
going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.
The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.
This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.
Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.
Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.
Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors B
iggleswade FC was formed in May 2016 from the very successful Biggleswade Town Under 18s side that competed in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League. After a ground share agreement was put in place with Biggleswade Town at Langford Road Biggleswade FC was born. The club applied to enter the Spartan South Midlands Football League Division One at Step 6 of the Non-League System. In their very first season in senior football, the squad won the SSMFL Division One title. They finished with 99 points, six clear of Harpenden Town in second place and were promoted to the Premier Division. Some of the performances were breathtaking and the 8-1 destruction of high-flying Langford at Christmas and the 4-2 away win at previously unbeaten Baldock Town were both particular highlights. Others saw the team fighting to the very last minute to secure vital wins. Setbacks against Kensington Borough at home and the unexpected
loss at Bedford merely served to galvanise the players and they then went on subsequent runs of wins to get back on course. As well as success in the league, the club also had a thrilling FA Vase run. There was a last-minute winner against Essex Senior League Takeley and an extraordinary see-saw game as FC beat Canning Town 5-4 after extra time. The toughest possible draw came when FC were handed an away draw at Peterborough Sports in the Second Round Proper, who were comfortable winners of the United Counties League Premier Division. Going down 5-3, FC made a huge impression on their high-flying opponents. On and off the field, Biggleswade won a lot of friends. Crowds increased, more sponsors came on board and the club set out to cultivate links with the local community, especially among children and their families.

The club’s second full season in senior football will probably be remembered for its exploits in the FA Vase. Victories over Northampton Sileby Rangers, Basildon United, Crawley Green and eventual SSML Premier Division champions Welwyn Garden City saw FC reach the last 32. They were drawn against Thatcham Town, who were in the middle of a 41-match unbeaten run that would lead them to a league and FA Vase double. With a bit more luck they might have progressed, but they went down 2-1. The league campaign was a successful one, finishing in fifth place. Six wins and a draw from the opening seven games, including a 7-2 rout at Holmer Green, saw FC set the pace early on, but ultimately inconsistency and dropping points against sides in the bottom half of the table saw them fall away in the final couple of months. Our first venture into the FA Cup ended with a 4-1 home defeat to
Wisbech Town, but again we can point to the fact that it has taken a team who went on to get promotion to stop us in our tracks. Other notable moments in the season were taking our landlords Biggleswade Town to penalties in the Beds Senior Cup SemiFinal, while also beating eighth tier AFC Dunstable 5-3 in one of our best performances in an earlier round. We also claimed four points from two meetings with local rivals Biggleswade United, which both attracted healthy three-figure crowds. Another pleasing aspect of the season was that by the end, there were a number of players on the fringes of the first team squad. George Holman in particular didn’t look out of place when called upon and announced himself with a wonder goal at Stotfold. In 2018/19, the club announced itself on the local and national stage. For the second time in three seasons, FC were league champions, clinching the SSMFL’s
Premier Division title by six points after a fourway tussle with Tring Athletic, Hadley and Biggleswade United. They made it a league and cup treble lifting the Premier Division Cup with a 2-0 win over Baldock Town in front of over 300 spectators and in excess of 200 turned out to see FC lift the North Beds Charity Cup for the first time with a 5-1 demolition of Ampthill Town at Bedford FC. They also captured the imagination of the local community with crowds in excess of 500 at home to both Stowmarket Town and Windsor in the FA Vase. A memorable day out saw three coaches travel to Faversham and in excess of 600 witnessed FC lose 2-1 to an experienced Canterbury City side at the quarterfinal stage. The 2019-20 season sees the club rub shoulders with some illustrious nonleague opponents in the Southern Football League for the first time.

The opposition Tyler Josephs The young goalkeeper arrived this summer from Potton United where he made more than 80 appearances over the past two seasons. Luke Oswick 20-year-old defender is a promising local youngster. Previously with Royston Town, has become a regular feature at left-back after starting the season in the reserves. Michael Simpson ‘Simo’ arrived from Stotfold in July 2018. A player that was on Dave Northfield’s wanted list for a while. Started last season in the reserves, but grew in confidence and quickly became a solid member of the first team’s back line. Adam Hunt Attacking right back captained FC to the SSML Division One title in the club’s debut season in 2016-17. His performances earned him a move to Welwyn Garden City for 201819 and despite some good performances for
The Citizens, decided to ‘come home’ and became the first FC player to reach 100 appearances. Nathan George Played in the club’s firstever game in 2016. An impressive goalscoring record reaching doublefigures in two out of three campaigns. Lost his place in the side earlier in the 2018-19 season, but returned with some big performances in the run to the treble. Daniel Newton A summer recruits previously with Northwood, the young defender has already shown he is up for the battle despite being 19. Joe Gauge A January 2020 arrival from Hitchin Town. Joe caught the eye at rivals Biggleswade United where he scooped three awards at the club’s End of Season Presentation in his first season. Michael Fisher 24-year-old ‘Fish’ was a long-term target of the management team and

they finally got their man from Bedford this summer. Started the season at centre-half, but has turned in some fine performances in the middle of the park lately. Lawrie Marsh University commitments limited his involvement before last season, but he clocked more than 50 appearances for the club alone last term with some eye-catching displays – particularly from left back. Last season’s Managers’ and Players’ Player of the Year. Pat McCafferty Spent his youth playing days with Luton Town, but was released as a 16-yearold. Their loss was FC’s gain, making more than 120 appearances for the club to date. An all-action class act, who will be essential to FC’s future successes. Matt Richardson 20-year-old already has experience with Ampthill Town and has shown plenty of promise since arriving. He has had to be patient, but some
solid performances last season has seen him nail a regular starting berth in the midfield. Joe Bradbury An experienced midfielder formerly with Eynesbury Rovers, Crawley Green and Bedford. He may be one of the older members of the squad, but he is undoubtedly still one of the fittest. Matt Reynolds Another former Luton Town academy player who was a key cog in Biggleswade Town’s successful under 18 side. University commitments have limited his involvement in the setup, but having completed his studies he will be keen to stake his claim. Kye Andrews 26-year-old Kye is a late-2019 addition to the squad from Kempston Rovers. A hard-working midfielder with spells at Eynesbury Rovers and Bedford Town also on his CV. Lee Northfield One of the ‘originals’ from the all-conquering
Biggleswade Town under18s. Spent six years at Ipswich Town before moving to Stevenage. More than 40 goals and 25 assists for FC to date. Tom Coles A mid-season arrival from Eynesbury Rovers in 2017-18 where he had scored more than 100 goals in just over six seasons, Coles averages just over a goal every other game for FC. Following Adam Hunt’s departure, he took the captain’s armband and excelled as one of the club’s star performers. Tom Cookman ‘Cookie’ is a talismanic forward who leads from the front. One of only three players to score more than 50 goals for the club. Ryan Inskip First FC player to reach 150 appearances for the club, ‘Skippy’ was one of FC’s star performers in 2018-19, chipping in with 20 goals. His quick feet and close control make him equally adept at creating goals as he is at scoring them.
Scott Joseph Recent capture from Bedford Town. The 31-year-old forward has bags of experience with spells at AFC Rushden & Diamonds, Bedford Town, St Ives Town and Barton Rovers. The strong and powerful front man made an immediate impact, scoring five goals. Joe Leslie An exciting work experience addition from Stevenage. The third-year scholar has impressed with some eye-catching displays and some excellent goals. Daniel Bond ‘Bondy’ arrived from Langford in November 2019 having scored 12 goals in 16 appearances. He also has Step 4 experience with spells at Hertford Town and Welwyn Garden City. Sean McMonagle Another player who had a spell in the youth ranks at Luton Town. University took him to the South Coast where he scored 13 goals in 18 appearances for Horndean.
