Welcome

G

ood evening and welcome to The Meadow for this home game in the first round of the Southern League Challenge Cup against Chesham United. Tonight the Ducks are at home and Chesham are away. Although the Ducks are actually away and Chesham are at home. So we have the bizzare situation of both sides being both home and away at the same time. All the more reason to bring the Ducks home! In the meantime, we’re grateful to our landlords for hosting us for the season and hope they enjoy the evening and wish all the players, officials and supporters a safe journey home following the game.

Benjy Aghadiuno is on loan with the Ducks from Barnet

Our season has exploded into life with 12 goals in the past two games. Chesham will be hoping for a similar upturn in fortunes tonight, having lost their past three games – defeated 4-0 in their previous two league matches. They did put five past Dunstable Town in the previous cup game though, so will be a difficult opponent for the

Ducks tonight.

This is our first opportunity at home to welcome Barnet’s Benjamin Aghadiuno on loan. Benjy has already been on target twice, so we hope he enjoys his spell with us and is able to find the net a few more times before he returns.

About Aylesbury United

A

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was

4 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.

Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

017 marked the centenary of the formation of Chesham United, following the merger of Chesham Town FC and Chesham Generals, who took their name from the General Baptist Church in Chesham Broadway. Relative success in the following years paled into insignificance following the FA Amateur Cup run of 1967-68 when Chesham went all the way to the final of the FA Amateur Cup, losing 1-0 to Leytonstone in front of 54,000 at Wembley. The club sold 22,000 tickets when the population of Chesham was just 18,000. In 1991 the club won the Isthmian League Division One title, and also reached the final of the inaugural Loctite Cup. In 1993 the club were crowned Isthmian league champions on the last day of the season. But promotion to the Conference National was denied because the club could not afford the necessary ground improvements.

6 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

In the early 2000s the club again had an eye on promotion as Bob Dowie led a strong Chesham side to sixth in the Ryman Premier. But two years later the club were relegated back to Division One. After an indifferent start to the 2003-04 season the team took fourth spot in the Ryman Division One (North), earning a place in the Southern League Premier Division. The summer following United’s first year in the Southern League the true price of over-achievement came to light. By February 2006 the club was on its knees. Local businessman Charles Manchester visited The Meadow, showed an interest and helped get the club back on its feet. After four years at the helm, he was able to stand down at the end of the 2009-10 season with promotion back to the Southern League Premier Division. A takeover of the club by Roger Payne in 2012 has allowed Chesham to consistently

challenge for promotion. Following relegation to the Southern League South & West Division in 2006, Chesham were transferred to the Midlands Division after a single season. In 2009-10 a fourth place finish was enough to reach the play-offs for a third time, and a crowd of 1,115 witnessing a 4-0 victory over Slough Town at The Meadow to secure promotion. The 2015-16 season saw Chesham knock a Football League team out of the FA Cup for the first time, beating Bristol Rovers 1-0 on their own ground in the first round proper. Chesham first round proper the next season, losing 2-1 to Peterborough United. The 2017-18 season saw Jon Meakes take charge of the team after a decade as assistant to Andy Leese. A new-look squad took time to settle, but a strong run saw the team briefly threaten the play-off places before finishing a creditable eighth.
