Welcome
G
ood afternoon and welcome to this home league game against Didcot Town. We’re all hoping for a better scoreline than the match between the two teams earlier this season, when the Railwaymen ran out 4-0 winners at home. Didcot have continued their impressive form since then and currently find themselves in the final play-off position in the league. Last weekend they defeated AFC Dunstable 2-0, although prior to that their three games had all been highscoring draws. We wish their players, officials and supporters all the best today, and a safe return to Oxfordshire. The Ducks enjoyed a very Aylesbury United FC 01296 487367 info@aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk @aylesburyutdfc @aylesburyunitedfc flic.kr/aylesburyunited

About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

idcot Town FC were founded in 1907 and were founder members of the Hellenic League in 1953. Didcot adapted well to the new Hellenic League format and became the inaugural league champions. After four seasons, Didcot joined the Metropolitan League and reached the League Cup Final in 1961-62. They returned to the Hellenic League in 1963. Didcot waited until 1965-66 to taste success again when they won the Premier Division Challenge Cup. The following season the cup was successfully defended but the club had to wait 10 years for further honours. The intervening years saw Didcot demoted to Division One, but 197677 not only saw a return to the Premier League as champions but also success in the Challenge Cup. In 1987 Didcot returned to the Premier Division and rounded off the season with success in the Division One Challenge Cup.
The club remained in the Premier Division for the next six campaigns, and lifted the Premier Division Cup in 1992. Despite this the following season the club was relegated. Within three years the club was reinstated to the Premier League and the League Cup was won in 1997, Having moved to the Loop Meadow Stadium in 1999, the club established itself as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier Division over the next seven years, never finishing outside the top seven. Along the way silverware was lifted in the form of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy in 2001 and 2003, the League’s Supplementary Cup in 2003 and the Challenge Cup in 2004. Season 2004-2005 was arguably the most successful in the club’s history following a memorable 3-2 win in the FA Vase final at White Hart Lane. This came on the back of the club retaining the League Challenge Cup. Didcot were agonisingly close to claiming a treble but
failed to win the League by a point. The team finally won the Hellenic League in 2006 and with moved up into the Southern League for the first time. The Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup were also claimed. Didcot have enjoyed a spell in the South & West Premier Division, following play-off success against AFC Totton in 2009. Didcot stayed there for two seasons before being relegated. Didcot’s biggest FA Cup moment came in 2015. The team managed to qualify for the First Round with a home tie against Exeter City. The team were awarded a live tie on BT Sport, with a record crowd of 2,707 at the Loop Meadow Stadium. Current manager Andy Ballard was hired in December 2016, The 2017-18 season saw Didcot exceed all expectations as they finished sixth to secure a place in the play-offs, and an appearance in Challenge Cup final. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
