G

ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this bank holiday match against Dicot Town. As this is the fourth match in 10 days for the Ducks we hope the team has got something left in the tank for today which promises to be a tough game. Last season Didcot did the double over United, winning 4-0 at home, and beating us 4-1 on a disappointing day at The Meadow.

This season hasn’t started well for the Railwaymen. The team has lost its opening two league fixtures, defeated 1-0 by Kempston Rovers on the opening, and following that with a 3-1 home loss at the hands of AFC Dunstable. However, they did make it through to the next roud of the FA Cup on Saturday, beating the wonderfully named Roman Glass St George of the Toolstation Premier 2-1.

They’ll be just as keen to get their season underway as the Ducks will be to keep up the momentum of our current undefeated start. The next round of the FA Cup will take place on Saturday 7 September. But this will depend on the draw of course, as landlords Chesham United also made it through to the Preliminary Round beating Truro City on Saturday 2-1.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors D

idcot Town FC were founded in 1907 and competed in the North Berks, Reading and District, Oxfordshire Senior and Metropolitan leagues prior to becoming founder members of the Hellenic League in 1953. Didcot adapted well to the new Hellenic League format and under the captaincy of Ray Warr became the inaugural League champions. After four seasons in the Hellenic League, Didcot joined the Metropolitan League and reached the League Cup Final in 1961-62. Then in 1963 Didcot returned to the Hellenic League where it has remained to this day. Didcot waited until the 1965-66 season to taste success again when they won the Premier Division Challenge Cup defeating Witney Town 3-2 in the final. The following season the cup was successfully defended but the club had to wait 10 years for further honours. Indeed, the intervening years had seen Didcot demoted to Division One, but season 1976-

77 not only saw a return to the Premier League as Division One Champions but also success in the Challenge Cup. A decade later, in 1987, Didcot again returned to the Premier Division after finishing in third place behind champions Bishops Cleeve and runners-up Cheltenham Town Reserves. The club benefited from Hellenic League rules which prevented Cheltenham Reserves from participating in the Premier Division and Didcot took the second and last promotion spot. The season was rounded off with success in the Division One Challenge Cup, where Cheltenham Town Reserves were defeated 2-0 in the final. The club remained in the Premier Division for the next six campaigns, and managed a notable honour in 1992 when they lifted the Premier Division Cup, beating Banbury United 3-0 in the final. Despite this success the following season resulted in

disappointment with relegation to Division One. Within three years the club was reinstated to the Premier League and while the League Cup was won in 1997, the club had to wait until they moved to the impressive new Loop Meadow Stadium in 1999 before a turnaround of fortunes was truly achieved. In fact, the club established itself as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier Division over the next seven years, never finishing outside the top seven. Along the way silverware has been lifted in the form of the Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy (2001 and 2003), the League’s Supplementary Cup (2003) and the Challenge Cup (2004). 2004-05 was arguably the most successful in the club’s history following a memorable 3-2 win in the FA Vase final at White Hart Lane against AFC Sudbury. This came on the back of the club retaining the League Challenge Cup with a 5-1 win

against Carterton. Didcot came agonisingly close to claiming the treble but failed to win the league by a single point despite amassing 97 points and winning 31 of their 42 matches. After a wait of 53 years, the team finally brought the Hellenic League trophy back to Didcot in 2006 and with it the ensured promotion into the Southern League for the first time. The Berks & Bucks Senior Trophy and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup were also claimed, the latter making Didcot the first club to win the competition three times in a row. The league triumph broke all records with Didcot Town becoming the first club to reach more than 100 points in a season in the Hellenic League and the average points per game (2.63) gave Didcot the best record of any club at level five or above in British football that year.

off success against AFC Totton in 2009. Didcot Town stayed in that league for 2 seasons before being relegated courtesy of Windsor being removed from the league following financial difficulties. Ironically, Didcot were one of the few clubs to take points off Windsor that season, so it was a bitter pill to swallow. Fallow seasons followed but things started to improve in 2014, when new management duo of Ian Concannon and Jamie Heapy were appointed following a period of destabilising managerial changes. Didcot fought through numerous qualifying rounds of the FA Trophy to be eventually awarded a prime fixture away against Forest Green. Didcot managed to draw the match and were narrowly beaten when Forest Green returned to Loop Meadow.

The present day Moving closer to present day, Didcot Town have enjoyed spells in the South & West Premier Division, following play

Didcot’s biggest moment came in the FA Cup in 2015. The team managed to qualify for the First Round of the FA Cup with a home tie against Exeter

City. Didcot Town were awarded a live televised tie on BT Sport, with a record crowd of 2,707 in attendance. Shortly after the club’s historic run in The FA Cup, Heapy and Concannon stepped down with midfielder Andy Ballard stepping into the managerial role alongside assistant Ian Lovegrove. After a slow start and a season of highs and lows in his first management position, Ballard oversaw a period of success which saw Didcot reach their first play off spot in nine years as they exceeded all expectations finished sixth in 2017-18 and reached the final of the Southern League Cup, losing to Hitchin Town. Ballard couldn’t match the previous season’s play-off run as Didcot finished agonisingly short of the play-offs despite spending most of the season in the top five. This season the club enters a new era as Ballard departed and was replaced by the returning Heapy and fellow exDidcot defender Paul Bedwell as his assistant.

The opposition Jamie Heapy, manager ‘Mr Didcot Town’ returned to the club this summer for his second stint as manager. Jamie amassed an incredible 848 games as a player before stepping up as manager alongside Didcot legend Ian Concannon in 2014. As he player, won everything on offer at the club including The FA Vase in 2005 and promotion from Hellenic Premier Division in 2006. As a manager, he made more history as Didcot reached the first round of The FA Cup for the first time in 2005. Leigh Bedwell Goalkeeper started his footballing career at Swindon Town before moving onto Banbury United. Joined Didcot in July 2015 and has proven to be one of the best goalkeepers at this level. Leigh recently represented England for an FA representative side in the Falklands Islands. Luke Carnell Fan favourite defender returned to the club this summer following

two seasons away with Banbury United. A key member of the squad who never gives less than 100% and is club captain this season. Cameron McNeill Defender joined the club from Wantage Town in 2017. Predominantly plays at left back but is more than capable filling in at centre back. An important part of the team in his first season at the club and will only get better with experience at this level. Joe Green Young centre back joined the club from Abingdon United where he was previously captain. Impressed enough during pre-season to earn his chance at Southern League level. Strong in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet Joe has a very bright future ahead of him. Callum Young Youngster is a calm and composed central defender who has come up through the club’s youth system to captain

both the under-18s and development sides. Has already made an impact at first team level and will be looking to become a regular in the not too distant future. Ollie Thomas Local lad is a tenacious central midfield player who likes to get on the ball to make the team tick. Another 100% player who has filled in playing different positions for the team’s benefit on numerous occasions. Kieran Collins A midfield player with good passing ability and speed. Can also play at full back and will be looking to re-establish himself at first team level in 2019-20. Lewis Hayden Midfielder joined the club from Aylesbury FC in 2017. Started his career at Oxford United before spells at Banbury and Farnborough. A talented box-to-box midfielder, Lewis is very comfortable on the ball as well as a good leader on the field.

Seth Humphries Midfielder joined the club from Oxford United in 2017 and is an attacking midfielder who likes to try and create things. Good on the ball with lots of energy Seth will look to provide that link between the midfield and attack this season. George Reid A striker in his second spell with the club, who re-signed for Didcot from Swindon Supermarine in 2016. A pacy and direct striker George ended the season in excellent form and scored two superb free kicks against Hereford and Slimbridge among his goals.

than 50 appearances for the Freds last season as Wantage won the double. A quick and direct player with an eye for goal Connor will be looking to make a big impact at Didcot. Mark Francis Striker rejoined the Railwaymen for season 2019-20 following spells with Wantage Town, Salisbury and Evesham United. A hard working striker with a natural eye for goal ‘Franno’ was previously captain at Wantage and has a proven track record at Southern League level.

Brett Gardner Midfielder makes the step up to the first team after a successful season with the club’s doublewinning Under-18 side this season. Caught the eye with a handful of substitute appearances for the first team in cup competition’s last season.
