3pm, Saturday 1 December 2018 The Meadow, Chesham Evo-Stik League South Division One Central

Welcome

G

ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this game against Kidlington. Our opponents today had a wretched start to the season, losing eight of their first nine league matches, including an 11-0 defeat at the hands of Bromsgrove Sporting. But although they remain bottom of the table, Kidlington have seen an upturn in form in the past two games, including a 6-1 victory over Yaxley, and a 2-0 win against promotion chasing Cambridge City in their previous match. These crazy scorelines highlight what Ben Williams told fans at the recent 21CD meet the manager evening, that this season the league Aylesbury United FC 01296 487367 info@aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk @aylesburyutdfc @aylesburyunitedfc flic.kr/aylesburyunited

has been “bizarre”. He described the season as a rollercoaster, which has combined some very good performances with some “diabolical” ones.

of wins together. Both sides will be hoping this afternoon can be one of those victories.

But, as he pointed out, the gap between the playoff places and the foot of the table is still only 10 points, and fortunes can turn around very quickly if you can string a series

P.S. Welcome back to the long-serving Ollie Stanbridge, who returns to The Meadow this afternoon having joined Kidlington from the Ducks earlier this season.

About Aylesbury United

A

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.

Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

Today’s visitors

K

idlington FC was founded in 1909. In 1945, they moved from village football to play in the Oxford City Junior League. By 1951 they entered the Oxfordshire Senior League, winning the title in 1953. Kidlington, joined the new Hellenic League in 1954, but spent most of the 60s in Division One. The 70s started with The Greens winning the County Intermediate Cup Final, along with two further County final places in that decade. In 1976-77 a squad of young players produced Kidlington’s best ever FA competition run, reaching the last 16 of the FA Vase. The nucleus of this side gained promotion back to the Premier Division in 1979-80. The 80s were pretty uneventful and saw Kidlington return to Division One. The early 90s were steady and in 94-95 the reserves did the League/Cup double bringing some long-awaited silverware back to the club. An upturn in the first team

fortunes occurred after Karl Grossmann was appointed manager, he assembled a formidable tough tackling side, finishing in the top six of Division One in four successive seasons. Under the guidance of ex-player Kevin Walton the first team finished third in 2004-05 and won promotion back into the Hellenic Premier Division. The team finished the next season in a relegation position, but a national non-league restructure saved them from the drop. In 2007-08, first team silverware arrived at Yarnton Road for the first time in more than 30 years when Kidlington won the Floodlit Trophy. With additional honours that season for the reserves – who won Reserve Division One – the youth team winning the Oxfordshire U18 Youth Cup and Kidlington Veterans retaining their Veteran League crown. Season 2010-11 saw the club achieve its most successful season;

finishing seventh in the Premier League and losing to Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium in the Final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. But the club did win some silverware though, beating Purton 3-0 in the Supplementary Cup. Season 2015-16 was a dream come true for everyone at Kidlington with manager Martin Wilkinson leading the team to the Hellenic League Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern League. The club also had its best-ever runs in both the FA Vase where we reached the quarter finals, and in the FA Cup, losing eventually to conference side Gloucester City. Ady Fuller was appointed as manager for the 201819 season – replacing Julian McCalmon who had resigned at the end of 2017-18. But Fuller left his position in midOctober and the club was pleased McCalmon has been persuaded to return to manage the team for the remainder of the current season. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
