ood afternoon and welcome back to The Meadow for a long-awaited return to league action against Kidlington. Both sides have faced an interrupted schedule recently due to various cup ties and postponements. Kidlington last played a league game on 14 September, drawing 1-1 with Biggleswade. Meanwhile the Ducks’ previous league game was

three days later on 17 September, a stalemate away at Bedford Town. Since then Kidlington have been eliminated from both the FA Cup – losing 5-0 at National League North Gloucester City – and the FA Trophy, losing a replay to Thame United 2-1 on Wednesday. The Ducks also enter this match on the back of a cup defeat, narrowly losing 1-0 to our Southern Premier

League hosts Chesham United in the League Cup. Kidlington survived the previous campaign on the final day of the season. Their form so far has been up and down having won two, drawn one and lost three. So for both sides the league represents an opportunity to regain some form, and for the Ducks to continue our unbeaten start.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors K

idlington FC was founded in 1909 and played local village football where rivalry was so keen that players had to prove they were residents of the village for whom they played. In 1945, Kidlington moved to play in the Oxford City Junior League. By 1951 the Oxfordshire Senior League was entered, where stronger competition was provided by the likes of Witney Town, Morris Motors, Pressed Steel and Thame United. In 1953 The Hellenic League was formed and the Oxon Senior League lost some of its stronger clubs to the new league. Kidlington won the Senior League that season and joined the new league in 1954. Kidlington maintained a Premier Division place for a time, but spent most of the 60s in Division One. The 70s started with the Greens winning the County Intermediate Cup. In 1976-77 a squad of good young players played every round of the FA VAse bar one away

from home and reached the last 16, eventually bowing out to Gosport Borough. The nucleus of this side eventually gained promotion back to the Premier Division in 1979-80. The 80s were uneventful and saw Kidlington return to Division One of the Hellenic League. In season 1994-95, Martin Baker’s Reserve side did the League and Cup double bringing some long awaited silverware back to the club, and an upturn in the first team fortunes occurred after Karl Grossmann was appointed manager, achieving top six finishes in four successive seasons. The new millennium saw a major overhaul of the committee and a new chairman in Geoff Talboys. In 2004-05, under the guidance of ex-player Kevin Walton, the first team finished in third place and achieved promotion back into the Hellenic Premier Division. With promotion came a struggle with the

considerable difference in the standard of football and the team finished in a relegation position but were saved by a national non-league restructure. In 2007-08 first team silverware arrived for the first time in more than 30 years when they won the Floodlit Trophy under manager Paul Lee. In 2009-10 came a new Chairman, Lloyd Wray, and a new management team. Ex-player Gordon Geary was recruited to look after first team affairs and Barry Hiles to run the Reserve team. 2010-11 saw the club’ most successful season ever, finishing seventh in the Premier Division, and lose to a very strong Oxford United team at the Kassam Stadium in the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. The club did win some silverware though, beating Purton 3-0 in the final of the Supplementary Cup. In December of season 2011-12 Geary and Hiles resigned and two senior players Danny Leggett and Christian Perkins stepped forward to guide the club through until the

end of the season with the club just maintaining its Hellenic Premier Division status. For season 2013-14 the club installed Martin Wilkinson as manager and finished sixth in the league, making club history. They also reached the Senior Cup Final again, but lost to Ardley United. 2014-15 saw the team finish in their highest ever league position of fourth. Season 2015-16 was a dream come true for everyone at Kidlington, with Wilkinson and his team of Paul Harwood, Julian McCalmon and Jermaine McSporran leading the first team to the Hellenic League Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern League. They also reached the last eight of the FA Vase and had a very healthy run in the FA Cup. 2016-17 was the club’s first at level four of the football pyramid in the Evo-Stik League South Division One Central but Wilkinson resigned after a month due to work

commitments. McSporran took over as caretaker until the club appointed Julian McCalmon as manager, with McSporran and Paul Harwood as his assistants. The new manager and the team had a good season at this higher level and finished in mid-table. Due to the geographical implications from promotion/relegation, for season 2017-18 we were transferred across to the South West Division. For 2018-19, McCalmon resigned and Ady Fuller was appointed as manager. He had to form a completely new squad ahead of the season, and due to another restructure the club was transferred back to South Division One Central. After a poor start the manager resigned in mid-October and the club re-instated Julian McCalmon with Joe Davies and Elliot Osborne-Ricketts as his assistants. Relegation was avoided on the last day of the season, and the Greens approach 201920 optimistically with an established manager and a more settled squad.
