Welcome
W
elcome to The Meadow for this Sunday afternoon game in The Emirates FA Cup First Qualifying Round. It’s a pleasure to host our near neighbours Marlow – currently competing in the Bostik League South Central Division – with such a distinguished FA Cup record. We hope officials, players and supporters of the club enjoy their afternoon with us, and have a short, safe journey home. Marlow are the only team to have entered every FA Cup (only unable to compete in 1910-11), and even reached the semifinals in 1882, losing to the eventual winners Old Etonians 5-0. Both teams came through the Preliminary Round Aylesbury United FC 01296 487367 info@aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk @aylesburyutdfc @aylesburyunitedfc flic.kr/aylesburyunited

About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was
4 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

G
reat Marlow Football Club was formed on 22 November 1870 at the Compleat Angler Hotel on the banks of the Thames. The club was a major force in the game in the 19th century and as one of the original entrants in the FA Cup in 1871-72 contributed a share of the £25 that bought the first trophy. Cuthbert Ottaway turned out for Marlow that year and he later captained England against Scotland in the first ever officially-recognised international match. Marlow are the only club to have applied for entry to every FA Cup since its inception although they were unable to compete in the 1910-11 season. In 1882 they reached the semi-finals, losing to eventual winners Old Etonians 5-0 at the Oval. Two Amateur Cup semi-finals and a host of Berks & Bucks Senior Cup wins were among many honours won in this golden age. In 1894 Marlow rejected the opportunity to join the newly-formed Southern League to retain their amateur status and
8 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk
allowed Tottenham Hotspur to take their place. Apart from a war-time break Marlow played in the Spartan League until 1965 when entry was gained to the Athenian League. Marlow remained here until 1984 when they joined the Isthmian League. Having finished bottom of Division Two in 1985 the appointment of Mike Keen as manager heralded a rapid rise in status. Promotion to Division One came the next season and the championship was won after a two horse race with Grays Athletic and along with it promotion to the Premier Division. Season 1992-93 saw more FA Cup success reaching the Third Round and a tie with Tottenham Hotspur that was switched to White Hart Lane where almost 27,000 saw the Blues give a very creditable performance. Another appearance in the Third Round saw a trip to Swindon Town, who had been in the Premier League the season prior, where the home side
were grateful to progress by a 2-0 scoreline. The 2012-13 season found Marlow in in the Uhlsport Hellenic League with a new management team headed by Mark Bartley, winning the league title by a 16-point margin and scoring 123 goals in 36 games to return to the Southern League, where the next two seasons saw them consolidate with 17th and 11th place finishes. Marlow were moved again in 2015-16 – to the South & West division. The loss of key players and several local derbies made life much more difficult and a mid-table finish was achieved. A return to the Central Division for 2016-17 aided a fourth place finish and a play-off place, losing 2-0 away to Barton Rovers. 2017-18 ended with a mid-table finish followed by a return to the Isthmian League after a lengthy absence, to take a place in the newlyformed South-Central division with a resultant reduction in travelling most welcome.
