Welcome
G
ood afternoon and a warm welcome to The Meadow for the third consecutive home game in a third different competition, the Buildbase FA Trophy. Can the Ducks make it five in a row this afternoon? I’m sure that’ll be the question on the minds of both our players, management and fans today.
Aaron Berry scores the third against Welwyn Garden City
Today’s opponents, Mildenhall Town, currently stand 10th in the Bostik League North. They lost their previous league match 4-3 at home to Heybridge Swifts, but had won two in a row prior to that. We hope their players, officials and supporters have an enjoyable afternoon with us, and wish them a safe joruney back to Suffolk.
Should today’s game end in a draw, there will be a replay in Mildenhall on Tuesday 16 October, meaning our league fixture with Bedford Town will be rearranged for a later date (again). Bedford are also in cup action today, so check the website for the latest situation.
last home game of October. We’ll be back in league action against Sutton Coldfield Town here on 3 November. But the next round of the Trophy is scheduled for the weekend of 27-28 October, so depending on results and the draw, we could be back sooner than anticipated.

About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was
4 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

Today’s visitors
M
ildenhall Town were established in August 1898 and won the Suffolk Junior Cup two years later in 1900. Following World War Two the club moved to its current ground on Recreation Way. In 1945 they joined the Bury and District League, where they played until 1969, when they switched to the Cambridgeshire League. In 1975 the club reached the Premier Division. In 1988 they joined the newly formed Division One of the Eastern Counties League. The step up required the club to upgrade the ground’s facilities to satisy the league’s requirements. The last of these upgrades was completed in time for the beginning of the 1994–95 season. In 1996 the first team won the Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup in 1996. Three years later they finished second in the league, and were promoted to the Premier Division. The club underwent a major transformation during this period, bringing the ground up to standard,

and building the excellent clubhouse whilst still retaining an enviable central location. Trevor Munns took over in 2001, leading to six years of consistent finishing positions in the ECL Premier Division culminating in second spot in 2006-7. Hall again reached the Suffolk Premier Cup Final in 2003 where they lost to AFC Sudbury. The club also had two excellent runs in the FA Vase, reaching the last 16 in 2006 and 2007. The 2006 run included the defeat of holders Didcot Town in a replay in front of a club record 320 spectators, probably the finest night in the club’s history. Current chairman Martin Tuck succeeded Brian Brigden in 2002, and he has led the club through a turbulent period, although largely successful period. Munns resigned in November 2007 to be succeeded by local duo, Dave Pinkowski and Tony Lyes, the highlight of whose reign was a 7-0 drubbing of Lowestoft Town. Pinkowski and Lyes
were followed by former Bolton Wanderers star Simon Charlton, who had a very successful season, culminating in a superb 3-1 victory over Wisbech Town in the Cambs Invitation Cup Final. Charlton was replaced by ex-Woodbridge boss, Christian Appleford. Ably assisted by Tom Youngs he led the team to immediate success, retaining Cambs Invitation Cup, beating Haverhill Rovers 2-0 in the 2011 final, as well as attaining fifth place in the league. Christian left the club in November 2014 and was replaced by former Football League goalkeeper Dean Greygoose. Huge progress has been made under Dean’s guidance and 2015-16 saw the team win the Eastern Counties League Challenge Cup for the first time. In 201617 the league and cup double was achieved as Newmarket Town were defeated in the League Cup final and the league title won by a 9 point margin, enabling promotion to the Isthmian League.
