G

ood afternoon and welcome to this Pitching In Southern League Division One Central league game against North Leigh. A warm welcome to today’s visiting players, officials and supporters, and we hope you have a pleasant afternoon and safe journey home. Today’s opponents have been a particular bogey side for us, losing the past four league games against them. In fact, we’ve never beaten them, with the only other two matches between the sides coming in the FA Cup Preliminary Round in 2011, when a 0-0 draw was followed by a 4-1 defeat. If that wasn’t daunting (and depressing) enough, the Millers arrive at The Meadow today full of confidence as they’re top of the league. They weren’t involved in last weekend’s FA Cup matches, having been knocked out previously by neighbours Kidlington. Instead they beat Wantage Town 2-0 in the league, moving them above the unbeaten Berkhamsted. They’ve also

defeated Kempston Rovers, Barton Rovers, FC Romania, plus a draw against Kidlington, this season to earn top spot. The Ducks were busy notching up our 100th victory in the FA Cup, beating Willand Rovers 4-1, to reach the Scound Round Qualifying for the first time in four seasons. The reward was a home tie against Uhlsport Hellenic League Premier Bishop’s Cleeve – who came back from 2-0 down to beat Kidlington 3-2. Our continued progress in the FA Cup has necessitated a change to the fixture schedule. Our away match against Wantage Town, that previous should have taken place on Saturday 18 September, will now take place on Tuesday 12 October, with a 7.45pm kick-off. The club also sends our best wishes to former manager Glyn Creaser, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a charity game last Saturday, and is currently in a stable condition in hospital.

The history of Aylesbury United A

ylesbury United were founded in 1897 when three local sides: Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town decided to merge. The club, affectionately known as ‘the Ducks’ due to the famous Aylesbury breed, have experienced some incredible highs over their long 124-year history but now battle for existence without a home ground to call their own. In the early years United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where they remained until the Second World War. 1951 saw the Ducks gain their first taste of national publicity as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round Proper of the FA Cup, eventually losing to Third Division side Watford. Southern League and success Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, a move which got the ball rolling on the club’s most successful period. A number of events followed which were to help: In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then a year later a young local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, unaware that he was to become the most successful player in the club’s history. ‘Hercy’ was, and still is, an Aylesbury icon, and some 20-years later he finally hung

up his boots having smashed the club records with 669 appearances and scoring 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. This gave the town a new impetus and Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the GM Vauxhall Conference. United then hit the headlines again, becoming the only non-league side ever to take on the full England team, as more than 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions. Unfortunately United’s brush with the non-league elite only lasted one season, after which the club were relegated to the Isthmian League. Fame and the FA Cup During the period between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. The highlights being a victory over then Division Four leaders Southend United, a narrow extra time replay defeat against Northampton Town, and being shown live across Europe against Walsall. Ironically though it wasn’t Gould, the club’s most

successful manager, who led the Ducks to their greatest FA Cup achievement, it was his successor Steve Ketteridge in 1994-95. Once again the club became media celebrities as the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration was shown around the world, as Aylesbury went on to reach the Third Round where they lost to Premiership side Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup title to Aylesbury, but it was to be the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United a year later, despite heading the table for long periods. The following season saw United back in administration and fighting for survival both on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. In October 2000, the legendary Hercules took time out from his duties as the club’s Community Development Officer to manage the Ducks, and in his brief spell in charge he secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and extended the club’s proud FA Cup record with a First Round trip to Port Vale.

Homeless and hopeless Carroll decided to cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, and popular local businessman Graham Read took over the club. But in a cruel twist Aylesbury were left homeless after their lease expired. Since that time Aylesbury have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches some 20 miles out of Aylesbury whilst the committee work

2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national prominence twice. First the club was privileged to play a major part in an England get together as the Buckingham Road facilities were used by Sven Goran Eriksson for a media conference and by the squad for a training session. Second the club made their first ever appearance in the FA Trophy semi-finals, where the Ducks were beaten by eventual winners Burscough. For various reasons the club then began to cycle through a string of managers at an average of two a season – namely Chris Boothe, Kevin Wilson, Paul Curtis, Danny Nicholls, Jon Franklin, Tony Thompson and Mark Eaton. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road pitch to a 3G artificial surface – what he described as his ‘last ditch’ idea for creating a viable football club, when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas.

hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ has generated plenty of publicity, but so far, sadly, nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. There are still plenty of reasons to remain positive; a glance to our near neighbours Slough Town, who moved into a new ground in 2016 having left their previous home in 2003, just goes to show that with patience and perseverance it can be done, and Aylesbury United will return to their rightful place eventually. On the pitch the club continued to do remarkably well, going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose last summer when the then manager defected, taking almost the entire playing squad with him. This led to another

tumultuous season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, but due to personal reasons he had to renege on his appointment less than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant, Byron Walton, briefly stepped into the mantle and did a sterling job in assembling a competitive team in such a short space of time. He moved on and former United defender Tony Joyce became the club’s new permanent manager. Unfortunately Joyce was unable to prevent the club’s slide – which had seen them amass just one league win by October – and the club were relegated to the Spartan South Midlands League. However, Joyce built a new and strong squad which finished sixth in the league in 2010-11. Season 2011-12 saw further progression in the league with the Ducks eventually finishing fourth after a strong run of results at the tail

end of the season. There was disappointment, however, with the team out of all cup competitions by mid November. Rebuilding for the future The 2012-13 season saw the club competing for the title, being in the top four for the entire season. Finally finishing second to Dunstable Town, gaining promotion to the Southern League courtesy of the FA’s restructuring of the feeder leagues and the additional promotion places that created. The season was capped by securing the Spartan League Premier Division Cup, beating Hadley 3-2 after extra time. The Ducks’ first season back in the Southern league saw them achieve a creditable 12th place finish in a strong division. Other highlights from the season was a much better FA Cup run and notable victories against Southern Premier League opponents Hemel Hempstead, Chesham and Burnham in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup and The Red Insure Cup. The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but made the final of the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing 4-0 to Maidenhead United from the Vanarama Conference South. After a disappointing start to the 2015-16 season, Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club and was replaced by Glyn Creaser who had been coach under Tony. In Glyn’s first full season in charge, he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup, before losing at Premier Division St Ives. He also guided the team to 13th position in the table. After two seasons ground sharing

at the ASM Stadium in Thame, a decision was made to return to The Meadow, the home of Chesham United for the 2017-18 season. After a disappointing start to the league campaign, manager Glyn Creaser was relieved of his responsibilities following a 6-1 home defeat against Cambridge City in December 2017, with the team lying second from the bottom of the table. His assistant Ben Williams was appointed caretaker manager in his place, before being appointed in a full time capacity in January. Williams steadied the ship successfully, integrating a number of new young players and developing a great team spirit, which saw the Ducks rise to 13th in the league, winning nine of their last 13 matches. 2019-20 began in promising fashion, with the Ducks unbeaten in the first nine league games, and winning ties in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. Despite a slight dip in form, the Ducks remained in the play-offs before the season was curtailed early and voided due to the global Covid-19 pandemic. The 2020-21 season suffered the same fate as the previous campaign, abandoned after just two months of action. But that was still long enough for the Ducks to suffer heartbreak in the FA Cup, losing a penalty shoot-out to Moneyfields (in a game that had already seen four penalties) – before bouncing back to win on penalties against Tilbury in the FA Trophy. But with the majority of the squad that finished the season signing on again – along with a few shrewd acquisitions – hopes are high to pick up where the team left off.

This season’s charity partner T

he club has chosen The Cancer Care & Haematology Fund (CC&HF) as our charity partner for the forthcoming season. The CC&HF was set up to support the work of the Cancer Care and Haematology Unit at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. The Club will be helping to raise both funds and awareness for the charity throughout the 2021-22 season. Although part of Stoke Mandeville Hospital, the unit is a unique, stand-alone facility designed and purposebuilt to provide a wide range of outpatient and day-case treatments for patients with cancer, including blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Patients with nonmalignant blood problems such as clotting and bleeding disorders, various forms of anaemia, immune problems and haemoglobinopathies, are also investigated and cared for in the CC&HU. Graham Read, Chair of

Aylesbury United, said: “We are delighted to be able to support this excellent local charity in the coming season. I’m sure that our officials, players and supporters will do what they can to ensure that the unit at Stoke Mandeville gets recognition for the vital work they do. “Sadly most families are touched by cancer at some time, whether it’s through their relatives or friends, so we must all be prepared to help ensure suitable care services are available for those who need treatment,” added Graham. Aylesbury United’s most celebrated former player, Cliff Hercules, suffered the loss of his wife, Jo, to cancer in 2020. “Jo received regular treatment for three years at the Cancer

Care and Haematology Unit before she passed, so the charity has a special place in my heart,” explained Cliff. In 2018, while undergoing treatment, Jo ran the London Marathon to raise cash for the CC&HU. Dr Ann Watson, Chair of the CC&HF, commented: “It is so exciting you have chosen our charity, The Cancer Care and Haematology Fund, as your charity partner for the coming season. We are looking forward to meeting players and supporters and telling you about the wonderful work that goes on in the hospital to help cancer and haematology patients. Jo is remembered with affection by many of the staff of the CCHU which brings something very special and personal to this collaboration. “The timing of your offer is very important to us as we come out of this difficult year. The work of the Cancer and Haematology services has continued throughout but contact with the outside world, including the charity, has had to be restricted. We look forward getting out and about again, spreading the word and raising some money to support that work. And there is no better way than through sport.” www.cchf.org.uk

orth Leigh were formed in 1908, but it was only following the Second World War that the club started to make its mark in Witney and District League. The club won the Witney and District League Premier Division title seven times in the 1950s and also enjoyed success in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. In the 1980s the club resumed its trophy winning habits with five successive Witney and District League titles earning it a place in the Hellenic League Division One for the season 1990-91. The club enjoyed a good first season in the Hellenic League, finishing in fourth position and being the Division’s highest goal scorers apart from champions Cinderford Town. In the club’s second season it again achieved fourth position averaging two points per game, scoring 84 goals in the process. In the third season, the club finished runners-up to Tuffley Rovers in Division One and took its place in the Hellenic League Premier Division along with the champions. In 1997-98 the club reached the second round of the FA Vase for the third time before losing to Elmore. They finished the season in fourth place in the Hellenic League Premier Division, and capped their season off by reaching the final in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup where they were only narrowly beaten by their Oxfordshire rivals Witney Town 1-0 after extra time. The season 2001-02 was without doubt been the most successful in the club’s history to date. After a superb season of consistently high performances and an epic struggle with both Gloucester United and Yate Town

throughout the season to occupy top spot, the club eventually succeeded in winning for the very first time, the Premier Division title. The club also reached the final of both the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup. In season 2002-03 the club went one better and with a smaller squad than the previous year and arguably stronger league opposition, retained the title with a winning margin of 10 points over Yate Town (the team pipped the previous year) and local rivals Carterton. Unfortunately the ground at this stage was not up to required standard for the team to take promotion to the next level. In season 2003-04 a disappointing eighth place in the league was offset by a tremendous run in the FA Vase where club reached the last 32 and with reasonable luck would have progressed further. In 2004-05 the club finished in seventh place in the league but the highlight was the truly memorable run in the FA Cup as the last Hellenic team left in the competition defeating Deal Town, Walton Casuals and Edgware Town and only losing to Conference South outfit Newport County in Wales after holding them to a draw at Eynsham Park. In season 2005-06 after an excellent start and leading the table during the early part of the season the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Southern League finishing in fourth place after a disappointing late run. In season 2006-07 after a head to head contest with Slimbridge and narrowly finishing behind them after an epic struggle and a particularly strong finish to the

season including a double win home and away against them, the club were severely disappointed to learn of their withdrawal from promotion to the Southern League at a stage too late for them to be replaced them even though North Leigh’s home ground had by now received the necessary FA approval to play at the higher level. In season 2007-08 in the club’s centenary year it looked to be a mirror image of the previous year, with the team vying for the top spot throughout the season and just losing out in the final push for promotion. But in a truly magnificent finish to the season the team overhauled the long term leaders of the division, Almondsbury Town in their very last league game, winning the league title and promotion on goal differences. In addition to winning the league title, the club won the Oxfordshire Senior Cup for the first time in history defeating on Oxford United team in the quarter-final and Banbury United (Southern League Premier) in the final. So the club climbed to its highest ever position in the non-league pyramid by joining the Southern League South and West in 2008 and during its membership over the past 11 years has been a model of consistency finishing in a top 10 position in every season until last. Major changes occurred in 2016 with the departure of long serving manager Mark Gee and the appointment of John Brough who had just won the league with Cinderford Town. John had a successful first season steering the club to its best

ever FA Cup and Trophy run and just missed out on a play off place in the league. 2018-19 saw North Leigh fighting for their survival both in the Southern League and as a club with financial struggles impacting every decision made on and off the pitch. With the departure of John Brough, joint managers Craig Dore and Darren James took the helm with an almost impossible task ahead. Arriving from years working in the Oxford City youth programme, they had a strong desire to play young attacking football but a very limited playing budget meant a lot of hard results to swallow including an 8-1 home defeat to Corby Town. Despite occupying a relegation zone spot for most of the season and being eight points from safety with six games to go, the Millers completed the great escape with a final day draw against league champions Peterborough Sports. Following a season of restructuring and consolidation, the Millers started the 19-20 season in a much-improved position. A number of familiar faces returned to the first team fold, following spells playing elsewhere and these were joined by a couple of standout additions. The first team were clearly much stronger as the team hovered around mid-table and looked well positioned to make a late push towards the play-offs as the season came to a conclusion. However, nobody would have foreseen in August of 2019 how the 2019-20 season would be curtailed and in what manner. The season still deemed a success by the club;

highlights included reaching the Second Qualifying Round of the FA Cup and a trip to local rivals Oxford City and young starlet Henry Landers notching all five goals in an away victory at Bedford Town. Only a handful of matches were completed during the 2020-21 season, with the club sitting second bottom of the league when proceedings were halted in November 2020. It had been a difficult start to the season for the Millers, exiting the FA Cup in the first competitive match of the season at Marlow and only registering a single victory in the seven completed league matches. The undoubted highlight was an FA Trophy run to the First Round Proper, equalling the club’s best run in the competition. Much of 2020 and 2021 has seen North Leigh consolidate and safeguard the club’s future during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has worked hard to ensure the club remains on a sound financial footing, while where possible working hard to continue modernising and ensuring the club is in a positive position for the resumption of competitive football for the 2021-22 season. There is an optimistic and confident feeling around the club, and everyone associated is extremely excited about the opportunities that lie ahead, both on and off the field.

He is solid at the back and calm under pressure, his experience was essential in our unbeaten run to survive when times get tough at the end of the 18-19 season. Harry won the fan’s Player of the Season Award in 2019-20, he’s a Millers favourite for sure. Jamal Branker A former Southampton academy graduate; he has also been with Marlow, Slough Town, Frome Town, AFC Totton and Hyde United. The versatile winger has been quick to impose himself on the training field and impress the coaching staff. He will be looking to bolster the attacking prowess of the Millers front line this season. Callum McNish Part of the clubs most successful season in 2016/17, Callum returned last season after a stint at Division One rivals Didcot Town. A powerful midfielder with a slick passing game and a great desire to be on the winning side. He is the creative part of the midfield with the ability to read the opposing defence in order to deliver defence-splitting passes to the strikers.

Morgan Williams A North Leigh legend who re-signed for the 2019-20 season following a couple of years away. A strong running left-sided attacking midfielder player who has the ability to be a match winner from out of nowhere. Loves a free kick and is equally adept between the posts if required. George Nash Nash is a 28-year-old defensive midfielder and a key signing ahead of the 2020-21 campaign. He will be a pivotal link between the front and back lines and tasked with getting on the ball at every opportunity to get the team passing and moving forward. Another player to join the Millers from Didcot, but also has experience at Banbury and Worcester City. Aaron Heap Heap returned to the Millers for a second spell from Southern Premier Division side Banbury United in December of last year. The 20-year-old began his career in the junior sides at Southern Division One Central side Kidlington and he was also a part of the Oxford United academy, completing his scholarship with the latter and then being rewarded in the summer of 2018 with a professional contract. He made two appearances for Oxford in the EFL Trophy in 2018-19 and was a regular in their under-23 side that season. Roger James This young man needs no introduction to Millers fans having featured prominently for the club in previous seasons. A dangerous winger

Jordan Thomas Jordan has come up through the Procision Academy system and was handed his chance at Southern League level last year by Didcot Town. Has made the switch to his local team in the Millers over the summer. He loves to run with the ball and try to create things in the final third. He has also enjoyed a couple of spells with Reading City. He last season signed for Thatcham Town, making 10 appearances in total and scoring two goals. Jenson Wright Jenson joins the Millers from local National League South side Oxford City. Wright joined City from MK Dons at the beginning of 2019-20 and has spent time on loan at Banbury United as well. Millers fans may remember Wright as one of the scorers in the clubs 7-0 FA Cup defeat at the hands of City two seasons ago. Jamar Smith An immensely strong and athletic midfield player that has joined the club over the summer. Has previous Southern League experience

over the past couple of seasons with Thame United and Kidlington, for the latter he played 24 games in season 2019-20 notching two goals. Has been eye catching during pre-season playing from the wing; looking to get forward and get balls into the box. Aaron Woodley Aaron is set to start his sixth season at Eynsham Park this season. With his eye for goal looking sharper than ever, he will undoubtedly be making a few headlines throughout the season and will be a great asset to this strong side. Jack Newman Another new recruit for North Leigh over the summer; during pre-season he has featured at full back and also on the wing. Lance Williams Returned to Eynsham Park from local rivals Didcot Town, talented midfielder Lance has shown his abilities in previous seasons with the Millers. The following year he guided the Millers to a vastly more comfortable mid-table position, pushing towards the playoffs before the season was curtailed. Dore now takes up a role overseeing all football related activities at the club, covering all age groups and teams. Eddie Odhiambo, manager Eddie joined the club 12 months ago from Banbury
