Aylesbury United
2018-19
vs North Leigh
3pm, Saturday 17 November 2018 The Meadow, Chesham Evo-Stik League South Division One Central
Welcome
G
ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this league game against North Leigh. North Leigh come here off the back of a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Bromsgrove Sporting – something Ducks fans are all too familiar with this season – so will undoubtedly be hoping to make amends at The Meadow this weekend. Whatever happens today, we wish their players, supporters and officials a pleasant afternoon with us, and safe trip home. The Ducks meanwhile are coming off the back of their biggest away win in terms of margin in 14 years, with victory in the second round of the Berks & Bucks Cup against Shrivenham on Tuesday. The Ducks celebrate Greg Williams’ winner against Dunstable Town
It’s been a busy fortnight, with four games in quick succession, so hopefully the team has saved sufficient energy for a strong performance at home today. It’s also out first chance at home to welcome Tre Mitford back for the third spell of his young career with us. Tre was already on the scoresheet in Chairman Graham Read Vice chairman Ken Turnbull General secretary Steve Baker Directors James Byrne, Brian Metcalfe, Ian Pluck, Alan Sherwell, Warren Sheward Fixture secretary Ian Pluck Welfare officer James Byrne Safety officer Warren Sheward Ladies team chairman
midweek, and hopefully he can replicate the form that saw him score four goals in nine games when he was previously with the club last season.

About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

N
orth Leigh was formed in 1908, but it was only following the Second World War that the club started to make its mark in Witney and District League. The club won the Witney and District League Premier Division title seven times in the 1950s and also enjoyed success in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. In the 1980s the club resumed its trophy winning habits with five successive Witney and District League titles earning it a place in the Hellenic League Division 1 for the season 1990-91.
only narrowly beaten by Oxfordshire rivals Witney Town 1-0 after extra time.
The club enjoyed a good first season in the Hellenic League, finishing fourth and being the division’s second highest goal scorers. In the third season, the club finished runners-up to Tuffley Rovers and took its place in the Hellenic League Premier Division.
The club went one better in season 2002-03, retaining the title with a margin of 10 points over Yate Town and Carterton. Unfortunately the ground was not up to required standard for the team to take promotion to the next level.
In 1997-98 the club fourth in the Hellenic League Premier Division, and capped the season off by reaching the final in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup where they were
The 2001-02 season was without doubt been the most successful in the club’s history to date. After consistently high performances and an epic struggle with both Gloucester United and Yate Town throughout the season, the club won the Premier Division title for the very first time. The club also reached the final of both the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup.
In season 2003-04 the club reached the last 32 of the FA Vase. And in 2004-05 the club were the last Hellenic team left in the FA Cup, only losing out to Conference South Newport County after
holding them to a draw. In 2006-07, after narrowly finishing behind Slimbridge, the club were severely disappointed to learn of their withdrawal from promotion to the Southern League at a stage too late for them to be replaced – even though North Leigh’s home ground had by now received the necessary FA approval to play at the higher level. The club’s centenary year in 2007-08 looked to be a mirror image of the previous year, but in a magnificent finish to the season the team overhauled leaders Almondsbury Town in the very last game, winning the title and promotion on goal difference. A few weeks later the club also won the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. Changes took place in 2016 with the departure of manager Mark Gee and appointment of John Brough, who steered the club to its best-ever FA Cup and Trophy runs, and delivered a third County Cup triumph. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
