ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this match against North Leigh. Today’s opponents managed to pull of a great escape last season, surviving by three points. This was helped by the six points they took off us, not to mention the eight goals they put past us in both games. Today is an opportunity to put that right, and to turn things around following the disappointing FA Trophy loss to

Haywards Heath, and the narrow 2-1 midweek defeat to Biggleswade that ended our unbeaten run in the league. North Leigh last played on 19 October, a 3-0 loss at home to Corby Town so they’ll undoubtedly be keen to get back to it this afternoon. The bucket collection for this season’s charity partner The Ducklings Trust at our previous home game raised

.54

Trust raised £142

£71.27, which chairman Graham Read generously agreed to match raising £142.54. There’ll be another chance to raise some money at the annual 21CD Meet the Manager and Quiz night, which will take place at Rivets Social Club in Aylesbury on Monday 18 November. Come along to ask Ben your questions, before taking on some of your own.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where we remained until the Second World War.

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors N

orth Leigh were formed in 1908, but it was only following the Second World War that the club started to make its mark in Witney and District League. The club won the Witney and District League Premier Division title seven times in the 1950s and also enjoyed success in the Oxfordshire Senior Cup. In the 1980s the club resumed its trophy winning habits with five successive Witney and District League titles earning it a place in the Hellenic League Division 1 in 1990-91. The club enjoyed a good first season in the Hellenic League, finishing in fourth. In the club’s second season it again achieved fourth position, scoring 84 goals. In the third season, the club finished runners up to Tuffley Rovers and so took its place in the Hellenic League Premier Division along with the champions. In 1997-98 the club reached the second round of the FA Vase for the

third time before losing to Elmore. They finished the season in fourth place in the Hellenic League Premier Division, and capped their season off by reaching the final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup where they were narrowly beaten by Witney Town 1-0 after extra time. 200102 was without doubt the most successful in the club’s history to date. After an epic struggle with both Gloucester United and Yate Town throughout the season to occupy top spot, the club eventually succeeded in winning the Premier Division title for the first time. The club also reached the finals of both the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and the Hellenic League Challenge Cup. The cliub went one better in 2002-03 and retained the title with a winning margin of 10 points over Yate Town (the team pipped the previous year) and local rivals Carterton. Unfortunately the ground at this stage was not up to required standard for the team to take promotion to the next level.

In 2003-04 a disappointing eighth place in the league was offset by a tremendous run in the FA Vase where club reached the last 32. In 2004-05 the club finished in seventh place but the highlight was a memorable run in the FA Cup as the last Hellenic team left in the competition defeating Deal Town, Walton Casuals and Edgware Town and only losing to Conference South outfit Newport County in Wales after holding them to a draw at Eynsham Park. In 2005-06 after leading the table during the early part of the season the club narrowly missed out on promotion to the Southern League finishing fourth after a disappointing late run. In 2006-07 after a head to head contest with Slimbridge and narrow finish behind them after an epic struggle, the club were severely disappointed to learn of their withdrawal from promotion to the Southern League at a stage too late for them to be replaced – even though North Leigh’s home ground had by now received the necessary

FA approval to play at the higher level. In the club’s centenary year of 2007-08 it looked to be a mirror image of the previous year with the team vying for the top spot throughout the season and just losing out in the final push for promotion. However in a truly magnificent finish the team overhauled long-term Almondsbury Town in their final game, winning the league title and promotion on goal difference. In addition, the club won the Oxfordshire Senior Cup for the first time defeating Oxford United in the quarter finals and Banbury United in the final. The club climbed to its highest ever position in the non-league pyramid by joining the Southern League S&W in 2008 and during its membership over the past 11 years has been a model of consistency finishing in a top 10 position every season until last. Major changes occurred in 2016 with the departure of long serving manager Mark Gee and the appointment

of John Brough who had just won the league with Cinderford Town. Brough had a successful first season steering the club to its best ever FA Cup and Trophy run and just missed out on a play off place in the league. 2018-19 saw North Leigh fighting for their survival both in the Southern League and as a club, with financial struggles impacting every decision on and off the pitch. With the departure of John Brough, joint managers Craig Dore and Darren James took the helm with an almost impossible task. Arriving from years working in the Oxford City youth programme, they had a strong desire to play young attacking football but a very limited playing budget meant a lot of hard results to swallow, including an 8-1 home defeat to Corby Town. Despite occupying a relegation spot for most of the season and being eight points from safety with six games to go, the Millers completed a great escape with a final day draw against league champions Peterborough Sports.

aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9

The opposition Eddie Cavanagh Goalkeeper bought in by the management team in 2018 who only missed a handful of games last year. The modern goalkeeper came up with multiple stunning saves last year. Muhammed Otuyo At just 20 years old, goalkeeper ‘Mo’ will undoubtedly be a big contender for the number one shirt this season. At six foot six inches, he is a giant between the posts. Ben Brown Skipper rejoined in the club in 2018 after leaving in 2013-14. Cemented as the first team captain, his experience was essential when times get tough at the end of last season. Alfie Grant Returning for a second season with the Millers alongside brother Harry, Grant’s defensive workrate is admired by the fans. His headed goal on the last day of the season against league champions Peterborough helped North Leigh to complete their great escape.

Andy Gunn Enjoying his second stint at the Millers, Andy has played for Oxford United and Banbury Town amongst others. Kynan Isaac New to Eynsham Park this season, the left back has played for Luton Town, Oxford City, Banbury United, Hemel Hempstead and Stratford Town. Adam Learoyd After helping Oxford City win promotion to the National League South in 2012, Adam moved spent five seasons with Didcot Town, making more than 250 appearances and captaining the side to the play-offs in 2018. Jordy Ngathe Attacking-minded rightsided defender who first came to the attention of the North Leigh management team during a man-of-the-match performance against us in the Southern League Cup. Michael Alexis Once described as a Rolls-Royce of a

10 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

midfielder, Michael brings quality and a in depth non-league experience to the club. Previous stints at Oxford United and Burton paint their own picture. Ekow Elliott One of the few who holds Conference-level experience under his belt and it shows in the vast array of skills he possesses. Billy Gillett With great technical ability, Gillett joined the Millers following a fantastic season with Hellenic Premier Division Ardley United. Harry Grant The heart of the midfield towards the end of the 2018-19 season. With previous stints at Sheffield Wednesday and Gillingham, Harry was signed from Reading City – in 2018 he played in the FA Vase final at Wembley. Roger James Originally brought up through the youth ranks, North Leigh fans will know of Roger well.

Rory Linford-Pill Now into his fourth season with the Millers, Linford-Pill was a vital part of last season’s fight for survival and the holding midfielder is only getting better with time. Callum McNish Part of the club’s most successful season in 2016-17, the powerful midfielder returns after a stint at Didcot Town. Alfie Saunders Naturally an attacking midfielder, the product of the development team has adapted his game to be North Leigh’s utility man during last season’s campaign. Morgan Williams A North Leigh legend, the left-sdied attacking midfielder re-signed for the 2019-20 season following a couple of years away. Josh Dutton-Black Having spent two seasons at Eynsham Park back in 2013, Dutton-Black has developed a lot with his time at Didcot Town and abroad.

George Seacole Adored fan favourite has put away 71 goals in the previous three seasons for the Millers. Every year the Eynsham Park fax machine goes wild with approaches, some even announce his signature. Aaron Woodley Returning from a lengthy injury spell, the striker is set to start his fifth season at Eynsham Park. With his eye for goal looking sharper than ever, he will undoubtedly be making a few headlines throughout the season and will be a great asset to this strong side. Lance Williams Returning to Eynsham Park from Didcot Town, this talented midfielder has shown his ability in previous seasons. Another of the 2016-17 squad, he helped the Millers lift the Oxfordshire Senior Cup and set a record in both the FA Cup and FA Trophy. He is excellent on the ball and his experience in the midfield is sure to be welcomed by his fellow teammates.

Former Duck Tyriq Hunte Strong centre forward who made the switch from Aylesbury FC to United early in the 201718 season. Brought higher level experience from Oxford City as well as a spell with Wantage Town. He scored six goals in seven cup games, but fell out of favour and left the club in November 2017. Signed late by the Millers in 2018-19 he was inspirational in the great escape, scoring twice on debut and changing the dynamic of the attack.
