Aylesbury United
2018-19
vs Peterborough Sports
3pm, Saturday 22 December 2018 The Meadow, Chesham Evo-Stik League South Division One Central
Welcome
G
ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for our final home game of 2018 against Peterborough Sports. The Turbines drew their previous match against Dunstable Town 1-1, and lost the game prior to that 4-3 against Bromsgrove Sporting. Given their excellent start to the season – having only lost twice in the league this year and winning seven consecutive league matches in a row – they’ll undoubtedly look to bounce back today. The Ducks will also be hoping to shake off the 4-2 defeat inflicted by Berkhamsted last week, and demonstrate the same form from the back-toback victories against Cambridge City and Aylesbury United FC 01296 487367 info@aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk @aylesburyutdfc @aylesburyunitedfc flic.kr/aylesburyunited

About Aylesbury United
A
ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was
achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.
Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

Today’s visitors
P
eterborough Sports was founded in 1908 and initially known as Brotherhoods Engineering Works, famed for designing and manufacturing the world’s first steam turbine engine. The club honours its heritage with the turbine engine featuring in the club badge and nicknamed ‘The Turbines’. The club was called Bearings Direct in the 1990s and then changed to Peterborough Sports. The club started competitive life in the Northants League in 1919 winning the title in that first season before joining the Peterborough League in 1923. The club entertained Tottenham Hotspur at Lincoln Road before the Second World War in front of a crowd of 4,000. The club’s most famous player is Victor Watson who played in the Northants League title winning team before moving to West Ham United for £50. He remains the Hammers’ record goal scorer, played five times (and scored four) for England and played in the first FA Cup
Final at Wembley in front of 200,000 fans. Many of the club’s early years were unsuccessful. They had to wait 50 years between a Peterborough League Division 3 title in 1926 and winning the same title in 1976. The Turbines suddenly became successful in 2006-07 securing both the Peterborough Premier Division and Northants Junior Cup for the first time. Unfortunately the club did not follow up on this success and in the ensuing years almost went out of existence. In 2010-11 season the club secured its first PFA trophy since the Second World War lifting the Challenge Cup and were promoted back to the Peterborough League Premier Division for two seasons. Manager Seamus Morgan steered the club into the United Counties League in 2012-13 with a third place. The club’s first season at UCL level started well but ultimately ended in a disappointing
16th placed finish. Jimmy Dean took the reins for the 2015-16 campaign and in his first year the club won the title at a canter by 21 points, winning their first 23 games. The side also picked up the UCL League Cup. The side also added the Northants Junior Cup and the Hinchingbrooke Cup, and were dubbed ‘the four-midables’. That success continued in 2016-17 as the team won the UCL Premier Division with a league record points tally of 112 and were the top scorers in the top 11 levels of English football with 150 in the league and 205 in all competitions. The side entered the Northern Premier League for the 2017-18 season and initially found the going tough. The side went into 2018 bottom of the table before a dramatic turnaround saw the Turbines finish a most respectable 12th with that summer seeing the side transfer across to the Southern League. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
