G

ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this game against St Neots Town. This is our first ever home game against the Saints, so we wish their players, officials and supporters a warm welcome this afternoon. The previous encounter between the two teams in November was a close affair, with the Ducks winning 1-0. Last weekend they were beaten 2-1 by Daventry Town, and they arrive

at North Leigh

not enough to be

having not won in the past four games. The Ducks also suffered a 2-1 reverse on Saturday at the hands of our latest bogey side North Leigh. Our match against AFC Dunstable, which was postponed due to the poor weather a fortnight ago, has now been re-arranged for Wednesday 11 March, with kickoff at 19.45. This is also an opportunity to welcome

new signing Oluwajuwon Akintunde to the club. Juwon is a striker with Southern Premier League experience and was a junior with QPR. The bucket collection at the recent game against Bedford Town raised £56.24 for this season’s charity partner The Ducklings Trust. Thank you to everyone who gave generously.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors S

t Neots was formed in 1879, with the first formal honour recorded being the Hunts Senior Cup in its inaugural season 1888-89. The club went on to lift that trophy a further four times before the turn of the Century. In the 1901-02 season the club recorded its first known double when it won the Hunts Senior Cup, for the sixth time, and the Fellowes Cup. In 1924-25 the club was renamed St Neots and District and celebrated by winning the Hunts Senior Cup again. At this time in the club’s history, honours seemed to have been primarily from County competitions with the Scott Gatty Cup being won on three consecutive occasions between 1927 and 1929. No records exist for the next 20 years, although the Hunts Senior Cup was won on four occasions during this period. In 1949-50 the club were among the founder members of the Metropolitan League and recorded a fine League and Cup double. During

the 1950s the club was renamed to its present name of St Neots Town. For a decade the manager was former West Ham full back John Gregory, who was the first full time official the club had employed. His son became manager of Aston Villa. In 1965 the club won the Metropolitan League Professional Cup beating Gillingham in the final. In 1966-67 the club joined the UCL for a three year spell and the team progressed through five rounds of the FA Cup to reach the First Round proper for the only time. The next season the UCL League and Cup double was recorded. The League Cup was retained the following season. In 1969-70 the club opted to join the Eastern Counties League, then rejoined the UCL in 1973-74. In the next eight seasons the club had a reasonable run of success finishing at best fourth and at worst 19th. At Christmas 1987 the club was evicted from its long time ‘Shortsands’

home and had to complete the season on a sub-standard borrowed works pitch. At the end of that season the club was forced to disband and the outstanding debt had to be cleared. Out of football for just two seasons the club was reformed in junior football in the Hunts League with a pitch at Priory Park, St Neots rented from the District Council and the desire to re-establish the club at senior level was rekindled. In 1994-95 after a spell of six years absence from senior football they were readmitted to the UCL. The spell in the UCL Premier Division lasted 17 years but in 2008 the club was relocated around half a mile from their original Rowley Park premises in Cambridge Road to the north end of the loves farm estate as the club approached its 130th anniversary. In February 2010 Mike Kearns purchased all of the clubs shares to become owner/chairman. The 2010-11 season was the club’s best ever. The the UCL Premier Division

was won for only the second time. The club broke a whole raft of league records clocking up a record 105 points and scoring 160 league goals in just 40 matches. Unbeaten away from home in the league the side suffered just one home defeat and picked up the County Senior Cup for the 36th time, as well as finishing runners-up in the Hinchingbrooke Cup and reaching the fifth round of the FA Vase. 2011-12 saw the club reach even greater heights winning the Southern League Central Division in their first season at Step Four. Consolidation over the next two seasons saw the club finish mid table on both occasions, 201314 saw the club win the Southern League Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup. Season 2014-15 saw the club finish fifth in the Southern League Premier under the guidance of manager David Batch, narrowly losing out by a single penalty in the play-off final. 2015-2016 saw the team struggle and Batch resigned in January 2016 with the club was fighting for step 3 status.

Mike Kearns stepped down as chairman at the same time and his majority share holding was acquired by MD Lee Kearns. Academy manager Andy Davies steadied the ship and ensured step 3 football for the following season. 2016-2017 started well but once again the mid season jinx struck with Andy stepping down due to ill health. Matt Clements was appointed manager in December 2016 and with the full backing of the board started the process of changing the first team to reflect his own beliefs and football philosophy. In January 2019 Clements changes his role at the club to become director of football with his first job in the new role finding a replacement manager. Marc Abbott joined the clubs from Haverhill to become the first team manager. In April 2019 the club was relegated for the first time in its history and now plays at Step Four in the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central.
