appy new year and welcome to The Meadow for this game against Wantage Town. This season certainly hasn’t been a happy one for the players, officials and supporters of the Freds, having failed to earn a single point in their first 18 games. However, a new year is the often the catalyst for a fresh start, and on New Year’s Day they earned their first points with a 1-0

win against North Leigh. As ever when there is a turbulent season, a club at this level will experience lots of comings and goings. How much the Ducks can take away from the previous meeting between the two teams in August – which ended in a 2-0 win – will be limited, given only one of the starting eleven that day – captain James Glover – started the Freds’ game on Boxing Day.

One face that is familiar however is Sydney Ibie, who joined the Freds on loan in December and scored the winner in that first victory for them. As for the Ducks, as we enter the second half of the season, now is the time to build upon a start that has been beyond expectations. Let’s hope the team can start that with a win in this afternoon’s game.

New Year Message T

he club’s directors would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the season so far, on and off the pitch. Ben has built an exciting squad this season, with some shrewd signings which have formed a tight-knit group, allowing the start to the season to be beyond the expectations of even the most optimistic of supporters. Twelve clean sheets so far have seen the club firmly established toward the top of the league, matching most teams we have faced so far – most with much higher playing budgets and resources that we could only dream of. It has been said many times already this season that our performances have allowed us to take points from games that wouldn’t have been possible in the previous campaign. A new found resilience and fortitude are very definitely evident in this squad. We are lucky to have loyal players representing the club, with six of the

squad having played in excess of 100 matches so far, including our two stalwarts, Greg Williams and Jack Wood, both of whom are closing on 500 appearances for the Ducks. Their loyalty to our club is an example to the younger players Ben has brought in, all of whom look up to the senior players. Off the field we are immensely proud of the support of you, our fans. Travelling in numbers every week to back the team home or away, you are an inspiration to the players and your vocal support is second to none and keeps the players going. We are extremely grateful to those that have joined the Gold Club this season, providing the club with vital revenue. We enjoyed hosting you all for lunch a few weeks ago and look forward to doing the same in the New Year. Those of you who are members of 21CD, our Supporter’s Trust, continue to help support the club through your

4 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

subscriptions and various fund-raising initiatives. Rest assured the financial contribution you all make, in one way or another, helps this club survive, against the odds at times. Without you, this club would not be playing at Southern League level; we are extremely grateful for this and would never take your support for granted. Last but certainly not least, a word of thanks to all the volunteers who ensure that we are able to stage our home games. Whether it be stewards, turnstile operators, bar staff, hospitality, groundsman, raffle organiser or first aid, without their help there would be no football to watch. We are extremely thankful to them all. While we have a small band of helpers, we are always looking for extra people to help, especially to man the turnstile. If you can afford the time to be at the ground by 1.30 until just after kickoff, we would be most welcoming to you. A huge thank you to you all.

The news before Christmas when Buckingham Road was sold at auction was something that no one connected to the club wanted to hear. Since we left in 2006, while the Stadium remained in place unused there was always the hope that the club may be able to return. As a club, we bid to buy the ground back, but had to realise that there was a ceiling which we could not go above if we were to ensure a viable future for the club. Sadly the bidding went beyond the figure we could afford to offer. With the sale of the ground the dream is now sadly gone, but we remain positive that there are other options that might see us return to play our football back in Aylesbury. We have established a good network of stakeholders in the local area, including discussing our hopes with the local councils, including very positive talks with Aylesbury Town Council, who are very aware of the need to establish community facilities in

the town, especially with the current growth in population and residential housing. While these discussions are at an early stage, we remain positive that this will result in some good news in the future. As and when information becomes available that we can relate to the supporters, you can rest assured that we will do so. We now look forward to 2020 and a bright future for our club, one that all supporters whether they follow from afar or are able to attend matches regularly should feel equally positive about. We have an excellent squad, a great management team who are very committed to the club, and a loyal band of supporters who are the envy of many clubs at our level. We thank you for your support and wish you and your families a very happy new year.

In memoriam David Gommon There will be a minute’s applause before today’s game in memory of longtime Ducks supporter Dave Gommon. Trains and football were his passion, and Dave often could be heard with his duck ‘whistle’ in response to Wendy doing hers. He loved going to Buckingham Road, and always said if he won the lottery he’d buy it back, and have a stand named after him. Although too poorly to attend in recent years, daughter Madeleine kept him up to date with how the Ducks were getting on, and he was so pleased at how well they were doing this season.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

antage Town (aka the Freds or Alfredians) have been affiliated to the Berks & Bucks FA since 1892. They played in the Swindon & District, North Berks and Reading & District Leagues, achieving success in 1903-04 in the Swindon Advertiser Cup, which they repeated in 1907-08 as well as becoming the league champions. After World War One, the Freds briefly played in the North Berks League, winning the North Berks Cup in 1920 and 1921 and the championship in 1921-22. After a brief period playing in the Reading & District League with no success, they re-entered the Swindon & District League, winning the title in 1933-34. The 50s was the most successful period for the club, winning the league in 1952-53 without losing a game, and again in 1955-56, while in 1954-55 the Freds won no fewer than five cup competitions, including the Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup.

Since joining the Hellenic League in 1956, the Freds have spent most of their seasons in the Premier Division, winning promotion from Division 1 on six occasions – as runners-up in 1969-70, 1987-88, 1991-92 (where they set a club record of 32 games unbeaten) and 1995-96 – and as champions in 1980-81 and 2003-4. Season 2003-04 was one of the Freds most successful. The first team won Division One East to regain its position in the Premier Division of the Hellenic, and the reserves finished top of their league also winning promotion. In 2010-11, the Freds won the Premier Division title, but despite great effort on the part of the club management, they were not promoted to the Southern League due to ground grading criteria not being achieved. In the 2012-2013 season, the club achieved the Southern League ground grading, but finished runners-up to a very

The club has recently been granted planning permission for the installation of a 3G pitch, which shows the continued investment in the facilities.

In 2018-19, the Fred’s won the Uhlsport Hellenic Premier title for the third time and regained their place in the Southern League, this time in the Division One Central section.
