Sonny French has French revelation:

G

ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this league match against Welwyn Garden City. Prior to the last time these two sides met, the Citizens were in turmoil. Longserving manager Adam Fisher, who had led the side to promotion to this league, had been forced to resign, according to a club statement, over concerns regarding his management of the budget. The manager’s

scored five goals

departure led to a player exodus, leaving the club with only three players, forcing them to postpone their match with Peterborough Sports. Dean Barker was brought in to steady the ship and ensured Division One Central football for another season. He too departed in the Summer, and the team is now led by Nick Ironton. All this change doesn’t appear to have done them much long-term

mes

in the past three ga

harm, as they currently sit fifth in the table. They’ve won their two past matches, against Kidlington and Yaxley on Saturday. It promises to be a tough contest this afternoon as the Ducks are on a fine run too, winning their previous three league games and four in all competitions. Swipe to p12 for Ben Williams’ thoughts on the season so far.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors F

ounded in 1921, Welwyn Garden City began by playing friendlies before being admitted to the MidHertfordshire League (Division 2) for the 1922-23 season. The club then moved to the Bedfordshire & District League for one season before joining the Spartan League in 1927-28, where they stayed until the end of the 1934-35 season. During the 192728 season it gained its first honour, winning the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield. Following a very successful 1934-35 season, the club was forced to resign as it couldn’t find a suitable ground to play on. As a consequence the club was wound up in July 1935 with debts of just over £20. This situation lasted until May 1937 when former rivals Shredded Wheat FC were wound up by the company management who were frustrated at the team not being allowed to compete in higher level leagues due to a

ban on company teams. Shredded Wheat took the generous decision to make their football facilities available for the re-establishment of a football team in the town, which included a donation to help establish the new team. This enabled the newlyestablished club to re-join the Spartan League in 1937-38. Season 1984-85 brought cup success for the first time since the club was reformed, when they beat Pirton 2-0 to lift the Hertfordshire FA Senior Centenary Trophy. In 1986-87 and 1987-88 they lifted the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield, only the sixth team to retain it. 2010-11 saw the club’s poor form continue, against a background of severe financial struggle, which threatened its survival. This wasn’t helped by having three managers during the season – Phil Read, Rob Pattwell and Simon Braine. The latter, with the help of assistant manager

Adam Fisher, helped to steer the club away from potentially ruinous relegation. 2012-13 saw manager Scott O’Donoghue working alongside Pablo Ardiles as his assistant. O’Donoghue left at the end of the season and was replaced by former player and assistant manager Adam Fisher, assisted by another former player Richard Teixiera. In his first season in charge in 2013-14, Fisher led the club to a highly creditable fourth place in the First Division, having challenged for promotion until the final run-in. A feature of the season was 51 goals from striker Jason Caswell, a new club record, outstripping Terry Hayes’ previous best of 47 from the late 1980s. The 2014-15 season was one of the most successful for many years with a First Division Championship and Cup double. Welwyn won the division title by seven points, ahead of FC Broxbourne Borough and took the Division 1 Cup for the first time, thanks to a 2-0 final victory over Crawley Gree.

The highlight of the 2015-16 season was winning the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy, having lost in the final of this and its South Midlands League equivalent on four previous occasions. The team were also runnersup in the Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup. The 2017-18 was one supporters will remember for a long time. Tottenham Hotspur ambassador and World Cup winner Ossie Ardiles unveiled stadium upgrades – which included two turnstiles from the old White Hart Lane donated by Spurs – following a Premier League grant. The league championship was won for the first time since the merger of the Spartan and South Midlands leagues and is only the second title ever for the club at this level. Even another defeat in the final of the Hertfordshire FA Charity Shield – the sixth in nine finals – and another loss in the final of the Dudley Latham Memorial (Premier Division) Cup couldn’t overshadow the achievement of Level 4

football in the Southern League for the first time in their history. The first season in the Southern League proved traumatic. An indifferent first-half to the campaign came to a head in early January, when manager Adam Fisher was asked to resign after consistently over-spending the club budget. Although he did, his actions sparked a players’ revolt which left the club with just three players. Dean Barker was appointed and set about a rescue mission, which was ultimately successful with three wins and a draw in the club’s final five games of the season propelling us to a creditable 14th in our first Southern League campaign. Barker’s achievement was noted by other clubs and he left on cordial terms in June 2019 to become manager of Kings Langley of the Southern League Premier Central. City then appointed Nick Ironton, the former Arlesey, Hemel Hempstead and Ware manager, in July 2019 in time for the new season.

Meet the manager F

inishing the season in the top half of the table would be a fantastic achievement, says manager Ben Williams. Speaking to fans at the 21CD Meet the Manager and Quiz Night in Aylesbury on 18 November, Ben reiterated his ambition for the season – to stay up – has not changed, but added he’d love to build on the team’s impressive start in the league. “If we finish in the top half of the season, that’d be fantastic. I’d love to be in the play-off positions around the end of February/March, because that means we’ve got something to play for and makes the season a bit more exciting. That’s the goal,” he said. Discussing the start of the season, which saw the Ducks unbeaten for nine league games, Ben said it has given the team a great platform on which to build. “Normally most of the season we’re in the

bottom half – bottom six, if I’m honest –and are always looking to get up into the top half. Because we’ve started the season so well, we’re in the top half and everyone’s trying to play catch up.” Praise for new signings The new signings that joined the club in the Summer have played a big role in this, with Ben praising Dave O’Connor, Jordan Jenkins, Ken Feyi, Ty Deacon and Mark Riddick.

12 | aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk

“Mark Riddick is one of those that went under the radar at his previous clubs, which is how we were able to get him, and has done a fantastic job. Not just with his aerial ability and his ability to read the game well, but because he’s a fantastic footballer,” he said. Williams also highlighted the improvement in those who’d stayed with the club. “What’s helped bring them on this year has been we’ve had a stronger squad. Whereas

last year they probably subconsciously felt I’m going to play anyway, now they’re playing to stay in the team, because there are five players on the bench who should probably be playing as well.” Loan signings will continue to have a role to play too. “We have a core group pf players that are here, and there are a few that dip in and out to give us a pick-up throughout the season. Sydney Ibie came in, who gave us that x-factor going forward, and now there’s Jamie Jellis too.” Defensive improvement

they receive home and away, although for those not accustomed to it, it has taken time to get used to. “The new guys find it a bit unusual because they haven’t had it at their previous clubs. We talk to them about going over at the end of games to clap the supporters, and they find it a little embarrassing because they’ve never experienced it before. Because we have a fantastic following at every game, it’s educating them that this is a proper non league football club with supporters, and that’s how we do it here.”

With Williams scheduled to take charge of the Ducks for the 100th time in the New Year, he was asked for the highlight of his time at the club. He settled on the final game of the 2017-18 season away against promotion chasing Hartley Wintney, which saw the Ducks run out 4-3 winners.

The defensive improvement was raised by fans, and while the discussion of tactics will stay among those in the room (to avoid the attention of eagleeyed opposition scouts!), Ben admitted last year the team had been too open at times, and that’s something the management team has tried to address. He also repeated that the players love the support
