ood afternoon and welcome to The Meadow for this league game against Yaxley. We welcome the visiting players, supporters and officials today, and wish them a safe journey home. Yaxley have had a bit of an inconsistent season so far, frequently winning one week, and then losing the next. United beat them twice last season (including that crazy 7-3 win away), so will want to extend that

winning run here this afternoon. As it’s now midDecember, and thoughts turn toward Christmas, here’s a reminder of the Ducks’ schedule. Next Saturday we travel to in-form Halesowen Town, who’ve put five past Kempston, five past Wantage and then six past Bedford Town without conceding in three consecutive weeks. We then host Thame United at The Meadow on

Boxing Day, and are away to Didcot Town on New Years Day. We also have to squeeze in a visit by Didcot at home before 10 January, having been drawn against them in the second round of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup. A B&B Cup tie was coincidentally the last time we triumphed over the Railwaymen, with a 3-0 victory on 2 January 1991.

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks due to the famous Aylesbury breed, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground of its own.

a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut. ‘Hercy’ is an Aylesbury icon, and hung up his boots 20 years later having smashed club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Fame and the FA Cup

Promotion to the Southern Premier was soon achieved and shortly afterwards the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and gained promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.

Ducks first tasted national publicity in 1951 as they became the only club from the Delphian League ever to reach the First Round of the FA Cup, losing to Division Three Watford.

That year the Ducks became the only nonleague side ever to take on the full England team, as over 6000 packed into Buckingham Road to see the Ducks take on the Three Lions.

Aylesbury turned semiprofessional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and then

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the First Round Proper every season. In 1994-95 the club became famous

for the ‘Duck Walk’ goal celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Rollercoaster ride Steve Ketteridge delivered the Isthmian League Cup, but it was the beginning of a rollercoaster ride for the club. After almost going out of business, the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United in 1998-99. The following season saw the Ducks in administration and fighting for survival on and off the pitch. Despite defeating Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in its history. In October 2000 Hercules took charge and secured promotion back to the Isthmian Premier Division and an FA Cup first round trip to Port Vale. 2002-03 saw Aylesbury returned to national

prominence hosting Sven Goran Eriksson’s England squad for training, and the club made its first appearance in the FA Trophy semi-final. Bring the Ducks home In summer 2006 former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997, having failed in his plans to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface when the Southern League and FA baulked at his ideas. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but the Ducks were left homeless after the lease expired. Since then United have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches away from Aylesbury while the committee work hard keeping the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ was generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home. On the pitch the club did remarkably well,

going close to the playoff positions in the Midlands Division for the next three seasons but a new challenge arose when the previous manager left taking almost the entire playing squad with him.

The 2014-15 season saw the club finish in 13th place but reached the final of the Berks & Bucks Cup for the first time in 10 years, losing the final 4-0 to Conference side Maidenhead United.

This lead to another turbulent season which saw Martin Stone initially appointed as manager, before resigning less than than two weeks before the first game of the season. His assistant Byron Walton did a sterling job assembling a competitive team before former United defender Tony Joyce became the new permanent manager. Unfortunately he was unable to prevent the club’s relegation to the Spartan South Midlands League.

Tony Joyce tendered his resignation after six years at the club following a disappointing start and was replaced by coach Glyn Creaser. In Glyn’s first full season in charge he led the club to the semi-final of the Southern League Cup and 13th position in league. Current manager Ben Williams was appointed in January 2018 and led the team to 13th place finish, followed up with a 15th place last season.

Starting to rebuild After two seasons of steady improvement and finishes of sixth and fourth in the Spartan South Midlands League, the Ducks clinched second spot in the league and with it promotion back to the Southern League, as well as winning the Premier Division Cup.

Work continues to identify opportunities to return to Aylesbury. This year the club was invited to tender an offer for the now derelict Buckingham Road. While that was unsuccessful, the site is now being offered on the open market and the club intends to resubmit a bid, giving fans hope the team may be able to return home in the near future.

The visitors T

he club was formed in 1900 with its forerunner, Yaxley Rovers, being members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during 1902-03. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a post-war championship came in 1950-51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. Relegation was just around the corner though, and it was back in Division Three by the end of the 1950s. The club has always played either in or on the fringes of the highest levels of local leagues. The Cuckoos finished runners-up three seasons in a row, the last of these enough to see the club promoted to the Premier Division of the Peterborough League. The club’s first taste of Premier Division football came at the start of 197576 and once again they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better and won the Premier Division title.

The 1983-84 season was superb with the first team winning the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup treble. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of 1987-88 and made the step up to the Eastern League. 1993-94 saw the purchase of the new ground and the facilities to step up to the United Counties League, and the 1994-95 season was at that time probably the most successful in its history. The team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the West Anglian League Championship. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove. Jim Watson took over the management of the first team in 2002-03 making a magnificent charge from the relegation zone of the United Counties

League Premiership to finish seventh with 67 points – the club’s highest ever finishing position. The same season saw plans unveiled for new facilities as part of a five year objective to take the club into the Dr Martens league. The club was granted planning permission to redevelop the site, improving the facilities to FA community standard. The project was severely delayed in 2005 resulting in significant commercial loses due to an access dispute halting the club’s entire development plan. The dispute was finally settled and the project restarted in August 2006. 2008-09 saw the move to more temporary accommodation. 2012-13 saw a total rebuild of the first team and players under the management of former player Brett Whaley. The team finished mid-table and were joint winners (with Royston Town) of the Hinchingbrooke Cup. 2013-14 saw the first team finished sixth in the table – a highly

commendable result but the FA and League Cup competitions were massively disappointing.

of Brett Whaley from Wisbech Town.

2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and a fourth position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the club’s history, compounded by an embarrassing county cup final display to round off a poor run-in to the end. The surprise of the season was the shock departure of Brett Whaley to Wisbech Town having only days before presented his plan and budget for the 2015-16 to the club’s committee. 2015-16 was a new era with new manager Ian Benjamin, an exprofessional with massive experience in semipro and non-league and a track record of promotion at Step 4 and 5. The biggest change for the club was the new 3G pitch the club and the community have already benefited from enormously. Ian Benjamin resigned at the beginning of April and the position was filled by the return

Whaley showed his intent to take the Cuckoos to a higher level of football in 2016-17 by strengthening the squad while retaining the vast majority of last season’s players. In addition to an impressive third place in the league they also won the UCL KO Cup beating Wisbech Town in a fierce contest. 2017-18 saw new chairman Malcolm Clements officially set the club’s target as promotion. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the first Team management as Brett Whaley once again left the club. ‘Ferns’ led the club again to the league cup final, but more importantly to the league title and promotion to the Southern League. On the back of that tremendous season, the Cuckoos are looking to sustain their rise to step four. Everyone at the club is looking forward to the challenge.
