Welcome

G

ood afternoon and welcome to this home league game against Yaxley. If today’s match is anything like the epic encounter between the two sides earlier this season, we’re in for a cracking game. The Ducks were 4-0 up after 20 minutes, only for Yaxley to get back to 4-3 by half-time. United scored a further three in the second half, ending up 7-3 winners. The Cuckoos lost 4-0 at home to Cambridge City last weekend, and have not won in the past five, so they arrive at The Meadow with a point to prove. The Ducks also haven’t won since New Year’s Day, so both sides will be hoping for a victory this afternoon. SEVERAL CURRENT AND FORMER BSA STUDENTS NOW PLAY FOR PROFESSIONAL AND SEMI PROFESSIONAL CLUBS

About Aylesbury United

A

ylesbury United was founded in 1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nicknamed the Ducks, has experienced some incredible highs over its 112year history but are now without a home ground to call their own. United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War. Fame and the FA Cup Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals. Promotion to the Southern Premier was

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buckingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road. Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Premier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road. Ups and downs In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.

Despite defeating Football League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the second time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history. But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial surface. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired. Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 5

Today’s visitors

T

he forerunner of today’s club, Yaxley Rovers, were members of the first Peterborough League campaign contested during the 1902-03 season. History up until the Second World War is not well documented and the first instance of a postwar championship came about in 1950-51 when the club won the Peterborough League Division Two. The club’s first taste of Peterborough Premier Division football came at the start of the 1975-76 season and they finished runners-up. The following season they went one better winning the Premier Division title. The 1983-84 season was a superb one with the first team winning a treble of the Peterborough Premier Division, the Peterborough Senior Cup and the Hunts Senior Cup. The Cuckoos left the Peterborough League at the end of the 198788 season and made the step up to the Eastern League at the start of the following season.

1993-94 saw the purchase of a new ground and facilities to step up to the United Counties League and the 1994-95 season probably the most successful in the club’s history at the time. The first team won promotion to the United Counties League after winning the ill-fated West Anglian League championship. During the close season floodlights were erected and a stand was put up at the Leading Drove ground. The following season saw the Division One championship come to Leading Drove. The 2002-03 season saw Jim Watson take over management of the first team to finish seventhin the United Counties League Premiership with 67 points – the club’s highest-ever finish. 2014-15 saw the Cuckoos enjoy a very good season with an excellent FA Vase run and fourth position in the league but one of the worst disciplinary records in the clubs history compounded by an embarrassing county cup final display to round off

a poor run-in to the end. 2017-18 saw new chairman Malcolm Clements officially set the club’s target for promotion and build on the success of the previous season, starting what the club hoped was the next forward step for the Cuckoos. Local attendances began to swell and also got behind our reformed reserve team. Assistant manager Andy Furnell took over the first team management after Brett Whaley left the club. ‘Fern’s led the club to the league cup final (where they finished runners up), but more importantly to the league title and promotion to the Evo-Stik Southern League. This season, on the back of a tremendous year, the Cuckoos are looking to sustain their rise to step four, retaining the complete squad from last year, and bolstering in a couple of areas. The reserve team is looking to improve this season having finished sixth in the league and UCL Reserves KO cup title. aylesburyunitedfc.co.uk | 9
