What's new this year?!

Our shelter has had some slight changes over the past couple of months. Lorraine Fredericks has decided to retire. Lorraine is a retired school teacher, and in her retirement she started volunteering for the shelter in June 2004. Around April 2006, she accepted a part time position, now working for what she loved to volunteer doing. This was a great opportunity for Lorraine and especially for the shelter. Recently, in January 2021, Lorraine decided to retire for good (again). Lorraine was a wonderful fit for the shelter and so devoted to the well-being and love for the animals, and always a pleasant face to see. She and her husband Bob attended many shelter events, visited nursing homes with pets (among many other activities), and a favorite is when she and Bob dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus for the annual Christmas Open House Pet Photos. Her time, love, and devotion to the shelter and the pets will be greatly missed, although we know we will still see her supporting the shelter and doing some volunteering. Lorraine, thank you for all you do. We will miss you.

Claire Custer, where do I start? Claire began her career at the shelter in 1998, and within a couple of years became the Shelter Manager. Not always an easy task, as countless hours were put into the shelter on and off the property. Over the years, so many pets have entered the doors for Claire to oversee, and she ensured every pet that came in was treated with the love, respect, and the best care that could be given - and she did it so well. She was always seeking out ideas to better the lives of the animals and keep the shelter running, vaccinating and medicating animals, getting them vet care when needed, and making sure their time at the shelter was a good experience - not to mention dealing with the public and the board of directors. The list could go on and on. On July 1, 2021, Claire decided to step down as manager for personal reasons, but agreed she would still like to work part time - YES, at the shelter - to continue what she knows best: caring for animals. Claire, "thank you" isn’t enough for all the years of devotion you put in, helping the thousands of animals that came through the doors at Ayres. Your management skills touched the lives of so many animals.

Finally and even better news: A new Shelter Manager: Marissa Christman, as of August 18, 2021. Marissa has been working at the shelter part time since May 2010. Marissa brings so much to our shelter: her love, concern and caring for animals of course does not hurt. She is filled with so many ideas, fundraising ideas, and everyday ways to better the lives of the animals and the shelter. This young lady already has, and is going to continue to do great things. Congratulations to Lorraine, Claire and Marissa. Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do for the pets that come through the Ayres Memorial Animal Shelter doors.
