INTRODUCTION The aim of this Cultural Orientation Curriculum is to assist persons seeking asylum to understand the norms and culture of Trinidad & Tobago. The focus is to provide information on access to basic needs and amenities in order to facilitate local integration into the country.
WELCOME TO TRINIDAD & TOBAGO It is our hope that this document will help you understand Trinidad & Tobago better, know what resources are available to you, and ultimately, adapt to our local culture thereby ensuring more effective local integration. 3
GOVERNMENT/POLITICS IN TRINIDAD & TOBAGO Trinidad & Tobago is a democratic society; the Government is elected through a democratic process every 5 years. The two main political parties are People’s National Movement (PMN) and United National Congress (UNC). As of the time of writing, the PNM is the ruling party.
RELIGION Trinidad & Tobago is a multi-religious nation. The largest groups being Christians (Anglicans, Roman Catholics, Presbyterians, Methodist, Evangelicals, Pentecostals and Baptist), Hindus and Muslims. Due to the diversity of religious groups in Trinidad & Tobago no matter where you come from across the world there is a high likelihood that you would find a place to worship and congregate based on your religious belief. See page 23 for a listing of religious institutions in the areas where most asylum seekers reside.
4
SOCIETY & CONDUCT Trinidad is a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural society; this diversity stemmed from its history of enslavement and indentureship. The main ethnic groups present here are African, Indian, with the remainder being a mix of Chinese, Syrian, and French Creole. Each different ethnic group participates in the festivals and activities of other groups which demonstrates the foundation of the conduct of the people of Trinidad & Tobago-respect for others. As such this society is quite tolerant and easy going. A common practice of greeting someone in Trinidad for the first time is a hearty handshake. Saying good morning and good afternoon on seeing someone, or entering a store is common practice. Women may feel uncomfortable by male attention-seeking behaviours. Be firm but polite, a simple ‘good morning’ as a response can usually be better than ignoring someone completely.
LANGUAGE The mother tongue of Trinbagonians is English. However, many Trinbagonians speak a type of Creole English called ‘trini’. See Page 26 for a list of common phrases to help you understand it better.
5
Public Transportation There are four main types of public transportation, and these vehicles are distinguished from private vehicles as they carry the letter “H at the beginning of their licence plate number. PUBLIC SERVICE TR ANSP ORTATION CORP OR ATION (P TSC) BUSES These buses are primarily painted white, black and red (popular colours here). MA XI TA XIS The maxi-taxi is a privately-run bus. These vehicles are colour coded as follows: Red Band Maxis ply the East-West Corridor from City Gate (the Port of Spain Transport hub) to Arima. They travel along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and Priority Bus Route.
6
Yellow Band Maxis Travel the North West of Trinidad, such as Diego Martin and Petit Valley. Green Band Maxis ply Central and South Trinidad. See page 28 for an average costing of Maxi Taxis. TA XIS A car with a license plate beginning with ‘H’ is a registered taxi that picks up multiple passengers simultaneously and drives along a defined route. Taxis not only travel on main roads, but they may also be hired privately. However, the fare is usually more expensive than the maxi-taxi or bus fare. SAFET Y AND THE “PH” C AR Similar to the taxi, a “PH” car refers to a private car used as a taxi. These cars frequent popular areas and usually do short drops into villages or towns. A PH taxi is illegal and it is strongly advised that “H” taxis are used especially to ensure your safety. Further, if you are a woman travelling alone, ideally, enter a car in which there is another woman also.

ACCOMMODATIONS
The common areas in which asylum seekers reside (but not necessarily preferred) are: 1. Chaguanas 2. Curepe 3. Diego Martin 4. Petit Valley 5. San Fernando 6. San Juan 7. Scarborough in Tobago Asylum seekers who live in San Fernando have expressed the highest satisfaction with accommodation, while those residing in Diego Martin/Petit Valley and Chaguanas, expressed the least level of comfort. Curepe was a location not highly recommended to reside. COST OF ACCOMMODATION The cost of accommodation is generally TT$1,500 to TT$2,800 ; most accommodations are shared. As asylum seekers you must not only look at affordability but the safety of the area in which you wish to reside. See page 30 for a list of Reasonably Priced Supermarkets in the areas where asylum seekers generally reside.

FESTIVALS PHAGWA OR HOLI This festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil and symbolizes the beginning of the Hindu new year and spring in India. It is a time for religious worship, playing music, chowtal singing (Indian folk-songs) and tassa drumming. C ARNIVAL It is an explosion of colour, costumery, creativity, music and dance which culminates on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday with the Parade of Bands. HOSAY “Hosein” or “Hosay” has its origins in a religious ceremony formerly practised only by the Muslim sect known as “Shiites“.
20
TOBAGO HERITAGE FESTIVAL This festival captures the unique cultural tradition of the island of Tobago. It usually lasts for two weeks and is held from mid-July to early August. Throughout the festival, visitors can traverse the quaint, friendly villages to savour traditional culinary delights such as dumplings (boiled dough) and curried crab. STEEL BAND FESTIVAL The Steel Band Festival is normally held in Port of Spain, Trinidad during October to November over a three-week period. It is a unique opportunity for the visitor to experience the only new musical invention of the 20th century. Steel pan players compete in classical and indigenous traditions for categorised titles. TRINIDAD + TOBAGO FILM FESTIVAL The Trinidad + Tobago film festival (ttff) is a film festival in the Anglophone Caribbean. It takes place annually in Trinidad and Tobago in the latter half of September, and runs for approximately two weeks. The festival screens featurelength narrative and documentary films, as well as short and experimental films.
