In Michael Merrill’s designs the most important aspect I was interested in is removing all unnecessary details and creating a space subtle and unexpected. He also emphasizes that balance and harmony in his design are essential.

The origin of Swing Pattern inspired me to analyze how a playful event such as swinging can turn into a functional design. While designing the model from this fabric I wanted to keep the lightness and the delicateness of the style. With its clean and asymmetrically balanced curvilinear lines it consist only essential connections limited to three wooden rods to posses its simplicity. By staining the rods darker I created a contrast between the pale color wood panels and the connectors. With extended sides I wanted to emphasize imperfect quality of the design.

Requirements • Workspaces should be at least half of the occupied floor - 30 workstations • Reception Area • Sample/ Library Room • Office Kitchen • Conference Room- 3 • Bathroom (one unisex, with sink, toilet, ADA required • Storage (office supply, janitor closet) • Foyer/waiting area Signage

The concept of a good workspace Current trend in workspace/Changing work styles • Blurred boundaries, • Group-based work is the norm (for example formal cubicle vs open work desks areas, closed conference rooms vs hubs that people can both eat, socialize and work on their projects as small or larger groups) •Influence of startup culture : dynamic flow, constant movement, meaningful interaction, creative group effort and innovation within a gracious and welcoming setting, for example in this open office plan curvilinear design is applied instead of a lot of sharp corners to represents welcoming environment and dynamism. •workspaces, activity spaces 25

Mobility of furniture is important for this open office space so I designed them light weight with wheels. Some of them are multi purpose; for example a stool can also be used as laptop table.

Designing warmer and softer offices with a kitchen, cafĂŠ, or lounge at the center to emphasize collaboration and mobility. Because of new trends in office spaces hospitality and residential influences have been becoming more common.

material boards I used orange, yellow and yellow-green as complementary colors for this space. Since they are saturated colors I added white and grey and started using the muted colors first for the bigger areas such as floors and table tops. I used saturated colors in the reception and also common use areas to create more energetic and welcoming feeling. I added this pallet subtly around the work stations to keep the area less vibrant than the rest of the space. All the fabric and the wood used in this office are natural materials. For upholstery I have chosen wool, linen, for furnitures and floor I have used maple and birch wood.
