AKRÓPOLI

GÖKÇEADA

...There is a vast cave at the bottom of the deep sea Midway between Tenedos and rocky Imbros...

Located on the western side of Turkey, Gökçeada is neighboring Greece in the Aegean Sea. The island, which offers a multi-layered structure with its geographic features, history, architecture and nature, is integrated with the people it hosts. There is a quiet life on the island where few people live. In addition to the central neighborhoods, ten Greek villages, which were declared as archaeological sites, were built on the island.

Transportation to the island is provided by ferry service and there is a main transportation route within the island. It is observed that young people settled in recent years in the island where the elderly people live.

The island, which has undergone several interventions in terms of population and experienced many breakpoints, has entered the path of returning to its former identity. Due to the change in social life from past to present, it is possible to find many different experiences on the island. These marks form the identity of Gökçeada and are the values that must be protected in the first degree. 6

While the layered structure of the island is felt socially in the central neighborhoods, life in the villages is entirely based on these layers. There are also differences between the types of people on the island where summer and winter life change.

III. Degree Archeological Site

In accordance with conservation decisions, new regulations can be allowed archaeological sites.

The lack of an livelihood in the village is the biggest cause of desolation and abandonment. Although it appears to be the most populous village in the official sources, the number of people living on the island is very low compared to others.

There is a multi-layered experience in Dereköy as in the whole of Gökçeada. Social, architectural, ecological, cultural and historical layers are supported by the values of agriculture, society, flora and fauna. There is a strong intangible bond between these layers. The strength of this bond influenced the characteristics of the village and made the village different from the others on the island. Unfortunately, the dynamics of the village before its abandonment cannot be observed today. The revitalization of Dereköy will fully affect Gökçeada in general. This development process should be at the lightest level. The preservation of the heritage of the village is important. The Slow Food concept, which addresses to a worldwide audience, adopts the calmness and harmony of nature with people, cities, habitats and lifestyles. In this direction, it is planned to organize activities on certain days in Gökçeada, which will be a foot for slow food organizations. These activities were distributed to the villages of the island, including Dereköy.

AKRÓPOLI

GÖKÇEADA

Most of the buildings in Dereköy are ruined and unusable. The first thing to be done to make the village come alive and be a place to live is to renew and strengthen the houses. This renovation will be done with the help of structures without damaging the architecture of the houses. In addition, infrastructure systems will be developed.

10

Biomass Heating System

Energy Center

Micro-wind turbines Derekรถy is capable of producing energy from the wind due to the fact that the island is located in a very windy area. By using the possibilities of topography, wind energy will be produced in certain regions. Households

In addition, the co-operatives that will provide financial support will provide job opportuBuffer tank nities for the present island population, and there will be hope for the old Greek villagers to resettle on the Electric mains island. Solar Park A micro-scale solar park will be installed in the sun-exposed area of the village. Thus, the peasant may contribute to energy production.

Plantation Legend

In the fertile soils that remain in the northwest of the village, legumes will be produced that increase the yield of the soil. Beans, chickpeas and broad beans are some of the products to be harvested. These products will be collected primarily to meet the needs of the peasants and then to gain income. In gastronomy festivals and chef training activities, the products obtained from these fields will be prepared and served. In this way, both the soil will be processed and a common denominator will be offered for people. Surplus vegetables and fruits will be sold to Gökçeada residents and those living nearby. In this way, the peasant’s income will be easier to provide.

Landscape arrangement has been made in order to create quality spaces around the church square and laundry which is connected with the old market square. The fountain, which is now idle, has been brought to the forefront and activity spaces have been created through interventions on topography. In this corridor passing through the ruined houses, the gloomy atmosphere dominating DerekÜy was tried to be lived. With the green joints created on the ground, people’s walking routes and perspectives were directed. The church square at the end of the corridor represents the new state of the village. This corridor is represented as a passage connecting the old and the new.

İzmir is a city with many different characteristics. Although it has different features, the connections in the city remained weak. For example, pedestrian access to the delta area is quite broken. Similarly, the main road and canal that pass through the Sümerbank and Bomonti regions separate the two regions. These disconnections have been studied in the ‘Biotope Project’. Continuous flow of human circulation is proposed. The routes that will bring together the coast and the city were established.

With this project, it will be preserved when revealing the industrial heritage of İzmir which loses its visibility. The city park, which will be created with different biotopes, will revive the delta area and industrial area by offering many different programs to the city.

Especially in order to reduce the vehicle traffic around the project area as much as possible and to make the region suitable for human use, to minimize the noise, image and air pollution, small pocket parks are designed in the periphery of the project area. Pedestrian and bicycle paths connected to the circulations within the area have been planned to be minimized. 27

The primary, secondary and tertiary roads constructed on the step-stone neighborhood parks and main roads, which link the fields of industry, trade, sports, natural and cultural biotope, are considered in the upper scale program. Changes in the roads will change the road sections in the city and pedestrian bicycles will be given priority, water management and clean roads will be obtained. On some of the main axes determined, spaces suitable for the concept of that axis have been formed. For example, on a road from the port to the city center, programs that provide hints on port life, post-industrial experience and the experience of the city of Izmir have been integrated. Especially in order to reduce the vehicle traffic around the project area as much as possible and to make the region suitable for human use, to minimize the noise, image and air pollution, small pocket parks are designed in the periphery of the project area. Green areas are designed for different purposes in the upper scale program. For example, the green area in the region between the industrial zone and the canal is a buffer zone. This buffer zone is intended to prevent the pollution of the industrial area from accessing the channel. There are regions in Ä°zmir that vary in terms of user status and program. These regions are areas that have conditions in itself. These areas, which are related to the biotope concept, have been replicated in the project area. Different biotope sites were formed in Delta and SĂźmerbank Campus. These biotope areas have different programs and conditions. For example, the planting and the program of the Natural Biotope fields are such that it ensures the least human intervention. On the other hand, it is planned that the areas of Social Biotope will be more populated. Among these biotope areas, the natural flow will be provided by wet meadows, wetlands and buffer zones while the human flow will be carried out with raised roads. 31

A PARK FOR ENJOY / A PARK FOR SURVIVE Besiktas, one of the 39 districts of Istanbul, is a coastal district neighbor to Üsküdar, at the tip of the European side. Thıs place has a high human attraction due to its proximity to the commercial and entertainment centers of Istabul. Surrounded by Şişli, Beyoğlu, Kağıthane and Sarıyer, the region serves as the heart of maritime transportation.

The area ıs located on a very sloping topography. This will enable us to create capsule regions that can be used as refuges and stores in case of disaster. Mobility can also be brought to the field with different relations established at different levels.

Slope Analysis

Aspect Analysis

Hill&Shade Analysis

Besiktas, which is located in a region where sea and road traffic operate intensely, is determined as the primary escape point in the emergency scenarios of Istanbul. With the help of sea, air and land aid and evacuations to be provided, a planned disaster action plan will be implemented in the first and after the disaster.

42

In order to meet the general needs of each Park, some principle decisions have been taken. The walls that will emerge in sloping areas are used in the most efficient way. Underground stores and transformable spaces are designed here. Considering a strong system as an infrastructure, the parking system was prevented from collapsing at the time of disaster. Rainwater collected from the rooftops of the building will be stored and ready for use in case of Emergency. In view of the power failure situation, the underground generators will be buried. In addition, lighting elements will work with solar energy.

Pocket Parks

The concept of Park clusters chain is intended for upper-scale approaches to the Beşiktaş region. Green areas, green lines and pocket parks will create a green system that will connect existing parks and create a secure system. In this disaster-oriented project, a hierarchy for parks was considered. In this scenario, in the event of a disaster, people will seek refuge in the nearest pocket park and be evacuated to a higher-level park within the next few hours. In these parks, the needs of people, housing and security problems will be handled.

Upper Scale Landscape Design Proposal

Park clusters system including Azerbeycan Park, Ihlamur Pavilion, Dünya Barış Park and Ihlamur Park is designed with a self-sustaining system. Each Park has its own theme. When creating these themes, the topography of the field, the functions it has and the user group were taken into consideration. 45

LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT II LANDSCAPE AS A STORYTELLER HISTORICAL PENINSULA

LEAK IN WALL

2017 - 2018 Fall Term

Landscape design project 2 explores the history of landscape on the historical peninsula. While a program was developed for the overall gates, a landscape project integrated with the city walls was produced for the Belgradkapı region.

INSTRUCTORS

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru ERBAS GURLER Lecturer Dr. Melih BOZKURT Res. Assist. Arzu TÜRK

LEAK IN WALL The walls, which have preserved the city for centuries and witnessed many empires, were built on an axis that bounded the historical peninsula and connected the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea. The land walls set up the peninsula on the west side of the city and extend from the Sea of Marmara in the south to the Golden Horn in the north.

There are nine doors that are actively used on the walls. For centuries, these gates have been breaches of caravans, sieges, wars, railroads and roads to migrants Although these roads may change and improve over many years, the oldest layer is still used today to reach the center of the peninsula from the outside of the city walls. The first intervention for the civilian pass has been Fevzipaşa Street. This was followed by the construction of the Vatan and Millet Streets, and the interruptions on the walls continued to increase. To reach Topkapı Palace, a route reaching Divanyolu Street via Vatan and Millet Streets is being watched. Fevzipaşa Street is also the main road to reach the seaside.

Neighborhood Population Density Graph

The city walls, which have been carved with the insecurity of the Istanbul people’ mind, have caused this characteristic to spread around the neighborhoods. On the contrary, many ‘neighborhood traditions’ still exist in most neighborhoods around.

Insecurity Wall & Barrier Effect

Dense

Wall & Gate Relations The landscape design to be applied to this area should be such as to provide permeability to the walls. The design should has made it possible to reach both sides and above the wall.

Istanbul’s walls are surrounded by fifteen neighborhoods. The focus should be on the areas where neighborhood residents who are thought to be first-time users are in the majority. A continuous landscape line like on the city wall line must be formed by connecting the squares to be designed to the right and left side of the wall. Thus, the gates are also actively used. Residents are in close communication with each other. However, the wall serves as a barrier for people and often prevents the outsider from reaching inside and the insider from reaching outside. In most areas, the walls are destroyed and there are no transit ways.

For the upper scale plan created for Istanbul Historical Peninsula, firstly the current situations were analyzed. Some design criteria have been determined according to the problems and potentials of the region. In addition, the existing plant texture and the proposed landscaping scheme have been included in the plan. Green corridors and wind corridors are planed on the main streets. In this way, a healthier future is planned for the city. In addition, routes with different stops have been created for users who want to experience the land walls. These routes have been planned over the common roads that have been used frequently since Byzantine times.times. Inundated areas were identified around the land walls and functions were planned for these areas to provide relations with their environment and potential users. THE TRANSECT

The Sudden Transition From Graveyard Area To The Slum Area

This LandArt concept landscape project, designed on Pierre Loti hill, above the cemetery, is a design where different atmospheres are experienced. Thanks to the wooden pieces that act with the movement of the wind and make soft sounds as a result of bumping into each other, a place has been created for people to watch the view and the calm part of the cemetery atmosphere is reflected to the place. While shaping the design, importance was given to the existing plant texture and design lines were formed accordingly. Gaps were opened for the trees corresponding to the middle of the hard ground. Plant selection was made in accordance with coastal vegetation. Importance has been given to the use of endemic species. While the platform was being designed, it was allowed to contact with plants in some regions and green tissue was allowed to rise above the design. The choice of materials was chosen as corten and wood in terms of adaptation to the marine ecosystem in terms of species and colors.

Thanks to the corridor linking the sea and green tissue, people are enabled to experience both the dune vegetation and the marine ecosystem. On the parts of the corridor which are found as side arms, spaces for activities to be carried out on the beach have been established.

PLANTING DESIGN - RUIN CITY

2017

Original Painting

In this planting design project based on an oil painting, pedestrian road axes and landscaping areas are constructed from the main lines on the table. Main design ideas of the project can be explained as designing a vegetation pattern to direct people’ viewpoints, using the water element, merging the lake and the sea axle with a bioswale axle, creating spaces where people can spend time together in the area of the ruin facades. Primary aims of the project are that integrating vegetation and people to the area of the ruined facades, improving water and air quality of the area, providing a natural environment for visitors from a closed area.

Ormanlı Village is located in Çatalca district and is 35 kilometers away from the center of Çatalca. Ormanlı Village is known with its beach, its closeness to Terkoz Lake, its paddy fields and the buffalos. To reach Osmanlı Village ,there are shuttles provided from Çatalca, also people have to use their own vehicles to go there. Çatalca Village is connected to another villages such as Karacaköy Village and Belgrat Village. From to 1970 to 2017, the village expanded in size and began to spread towards the forest which is a natural edge to block the village’s overspread. In the village, while the sport field is used for grazing in the day., in the night, it is used as a sport field. Also, the streets are the playground of the children living in Ormanlı, but it is possible to see buffalos at the streets. The coatal site of Ormanlı is so passive in winter season when the site is used for grazing, while in summer season, it converts into an active coastal site with the activities like camping, parachuting. In addition, the coatal site hosts the coastal endemic species. The lake is also quite passive in winter season, but in summer season, the lake turns into an attractive place with activities such as picnicing, wedding.

92

The diversity of the landscape patterns of the village is also valuable. There are some natural and altered patterns and edges in the site. Naturally, the forest area create a forest edge which blocks the spread of the village. However, it might be changed by people to open new agicultural fields and areas for settlement.

Decisions to protect the OrmanlÄą Village were taken primarily on the scale of Istanbul. The natural parks which are thought to be a green area reserve in Istanbul and the natural vegetation in OrmanlÄą village and its surroundings can only be connected with the protection of these areas by law. When these Protection decisions are taken, a green belt characteristic can be mentioned for Istanbul. Since the village square does not carry the default square characteristics, new small scale squares are considered in the area. These squares will host a number of activities in the program for recreation purposes. In addition, these squares will be established near the forest border, which is determined as the growth direction of the village, so that the settlement direction will be drawn to this side.

General Preservation Boundaries

For the OrmanlÄą Village a preservation and recreation plan was considered. The first decision was the growth direction. A direction of growth towards the forest border was decided to prevent damage to wet and dry agricultural areas and the lake. In addition, these wetlands and lake are protected by law. A recreation program has spread throughout the year and activities are planned according to the needs of the local people. In this way, a way of life was provided for women, while a situation was created to prevent migration to the city.

The designers aim is to explain to visitors that how we perceive the productivity. In this project, the core idea is based on activities of volcano. Considering the power of disruption and creation of the volcanos, they first destroy every living organism. Afterwards, they led to the creation of fertile and productive land. This process is an example of productivity in nature itself. People involve this process in a specific part and affect the productivity dominantly. It can be said that, after people take part in nature dominantly, this process is changed forever. Damaging activities of humankind to nature and natural powers like disruption of Etna are considered relatable.

And the passage way under the structure during the night will give the lava effect with light. The road under the design is bumby and not easy to move in just like the original mountain passage Ways. The red led light is chosen as an element in the mountain to represent the lava. Finally, the productivity in landscapes is reflected by Etna Mountain and every design lines has a meaning about the distribution and extinction of the nature.

AGÜ & İTÜ WORKSHOP -

TALAS’I YENIDEN DENEYIMLEMEK VE HARITALAMAK - 2017 It is the difference of old - new structures and textures that can be noticed by anyone visiting the Talas. The cross section of the hill where the commercial axis is located shows us these stratified structures. In the conversations with the residents of the neighborhood, it was seen that Armenians and Turks lived in peace and tranquility in the past. If a Turk needed something, his Armenian neighbor would help him immediately. When we talked with a local inhabitant, Servet Teyze, she said that, ‘In my kitchen, if the salt had run out, the Armenian girl would run and bring from her home. We lived together like this.’ We can see this in the old intimate and intense life in the collage. Commercial life in front of the Tollar stands out as an activity that revitalizes the space. Sellers and customers contributed to the busy use of the region.

Now

The people here used to live openly with their neighbors. Now there are very few people who have come to the door and contacted you when someone comes here. In fact, the desolate atmosphere that began to dominate the field after the Armenians left here, erased this tradition from memories. In addition, the vineyard residents sell their ties and the construction of luxury homes instead of them is also one of the biggest factors that damage the region. As the vineyard houses are sold, the texture and belonging of neighborhoods have been lost.

URBAN LANDSCAPE PLANNING & DESIGN

2019

The academicians and students of ITU Landscape Arc. Dep. came together with the students of Haydarpaşa High School and took action to use the school garden in a more sustainable way within the scope of “Haydarpaşa High School - Designing Our Garden” project. In the first step of the study, Assoc. Dr. Gülşen Aytaç and a group of 20 students from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades of the department gave a seminar on landscape architecture at Haydarpaşa High School. At the end of the day-long studies, the groups made their own presentations. Then, through the model and maps of the high school, a design workshop was held with the students of the high school for the garden of Haydarpaşa High School. The students of the high school presented their ideas about the garden through the models and plans to the school administration. 101
