In response to the provocation « Temporary Architecture is a trojan horse for gentrification», this festival intervention was aimed to create a positive impact through temporary architecture. With temporary architecture mostly exploited as a means for profit and advertisement, ends up taking more than it gives - eventually the ‘temporariness’ transforming into a permanent ideology.

Map of Derry was studied to look at potential festival route options by studying the proximity of the site to amenities, access to green spaces and level changes. This allowed to devise the potential locations of pop-up temporary intervention and the main festival hub.

A few sketches showing functionality of a single pavillion unit.

First iteration looked at a structure with simple assembly with limited components - while also allowing potential multiplication on site. Thus was explored through a series of digital model. This design was iterated and explored further.

This was further developed through digital models below. The partition was thought into adopting throughout the ramp to add a sense of enclosure and was tested through a series of digital models and hand sketches.

Using the same structural ideaology the final prototype was designed where the structure acts as a display for the lanterns while also housingworkshops on the top, with a ramp connecting both floors. The axonometric drawing shows how this would be implemented.

Ground Floor Plan Pavillion

The ground floor plan shows the ground floor bustling with cafes and shops selling material for the workshops, creating a warm ambience against the cold exterior climate during the festival.

The top floor plan showcases the flexible workshops divided by partitions

The ground floor of the hub adaptsan open floor plan, providing freedom of movement throughout the structure. The columns of the structure in contact with the ground were swapped for pre cast concrete colums to improve load bearing capacities. The timber beams holding the floor plate were extended into the neighbouring buildings, without touching the listed adjacent buildings, providing a secondary passageway connecting context to the proposal.

The upper floor plan sections the room using polycarbonate partitions to retain the translucent concept of the pavillion. The spaces are used to store the wares from the marketplace below. The areas for the personnel have the same spatial qualitites offered to the public with lift access to the first floor.
