‘City Currents’ an Urban Event Park

Through site-impressions and research, the design for the Los Angeles State Historic Park was informed by the proximity of the Elysian Park Blind Thrust Fault, and the essential cause of tectonic movement: CONVECTION CURRENTS.

DESIGN STUDY ‘City Currents’ an Urban Event Park

CONVECTION CURRENTS can be described as the rise and fall of warm and cool temperatures throughout the earth’s oceans, atmosphere and geosphere - causing earthquakes, weather conditions and a continuous exchange of energy. The rise and fall of convection currents informed the physical characteristics of the park’s design; such as: the gradual rise and fall of pedestrian pathways; a gradual transition from ‘warm’ to ‘cool’ spaces, and ultimately, a park design that would accommodate large group activity or individual experiences providing a public space for ‘CITY CURRENTS‘ an urban event park.

This particular course of study was a great introduction on how to develop design parameters that are rooted in essential site conditions. The result was a park design that was true to the site’s nature, yet could also provide an exhilarating experience.

Initially, there was an intrigue about where Rosemead Boulevard met the San Gabriel River; but, through further exploration - the intersection of where the Boulevard met the Emerald Necklace became an area of focus. Rosemead Boulevard passes through the Emerald Necklace at Whittier Narrows - a regional recreation park that serves surrounding communities, yet lacks a fair degree of civic infrastructure and amenities. Leading to a question of: How may Design engage Civic Infrastructure with Urbanized Nature?
