covering the game of life

from the publisher Hello readers! Welcome to another issue of Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine (AZSAL). What a great time of year for Arizonans with an impressive lineup of major sports and entertainment events on the horizon. The headliner is, of course, the Super Bowl coming to Glendale in February. In late January, the Waste Management Phoenix Open is always the event to see and be seen. And a host of other activities are sure to satisfy your need for speed … and beer, including Super Cross, Monster Trucks, the Great Arizona Beer Festival, and many more. To get you pumped up for the Super Bowl, AZSAL brings readers our picks for the top ten Super Bowl moments. Of course, we can’t forget our local team, so we compiled the Arizona Cardinals’ best moments in team history. If you want to watch the Super Bowl at a cool sports bar — we got you covered. The holidays are right around the corner and we’re getting in the spirit. AZSAL has compiled the biggest and baddest holiday gift guide ever. From gadgets and golf to outdoor gear and toys for the kids – you can find something for everyone on your holiday gift list. We even wrote a feature on some really neat local retail shops, that certainly gives us all an alternative to those “big box” stores.

Fave Lunch Stop: TORTILLA FISH TACO SHOP Located on Elliot and Priest in the Wally World plaza (Walmart for all you Target shoppers), this quaint restaurant serves up some of the best, most authentic fish tacos in the Valley. Indeed there are some “big brother” chain restaurants serving up great food, but when I asked owner Francisco Peralta why people come here and don’t go there, his answer was simple. “We sell the most authentic Baja-type tacos made with all fresh ingredients.” We started with the basic fish taco made with fresh, never frozen, Alaskan Pollock. It had a discernably different texture then at most other places. Although it was battered fish, I didn’t find myself searching for the fish inside the batter, like most. They also serve up shrimp tacos and what they call the “Full Taco.” The full gets you everything: fish, shrimp, and a cheese-filled (it’s mozzarella…who would have thought?), yellow hot pepper with just the right punch of spice. Pow! Once you order your taco, they basically serve it up naked. Then you make your way to the “I’m going to make my taco extra special” fixings’ bar. This bar has it all: from Baja-style coleslaw (not sweet); cabbage; signature homemade tartar sauce; fresh onions; fresh cilantro-onion mixture; signature homemade ranch dressing; homemade mild, hot and

extra hot sauces; fresh pico de gallo; fresh limes; and their signature homemade cilantro, avocado and chipotle dressings. Celebrating their one year anniversary this past August, and with a new location opening soon in Gilbert, Tortilla Fish Taco Shop is a must try for fish taco lovers. Not to worry, they also serve up tasty salads and quesadillas, prepared with daily-made tortillas and plenty of cheese to stop the craving! Tortilla Fish Taco Shop 1320 W. MAKING HEALTHY CHOICES DURING THE HOLIDAYS HALLOWEEN MAY BE OVER, but for most people with children, the empty-calorie, tooth-decaying sweets still linger around the house until Thanksgiving week. It offers children plenty of opportunities to make unhealthy eating choices. Here are a few tips and ideas to mitigate the risk of bad food binges during the holiday season.

• It's best to design a goal that is achievable. If you give your children something to aim for that is unrealistic, they aren’t going to be motivated to reach it and will either give up, or simply eat the unhealthy foods when you're not looking. By providing an attainable bar, your success rate will increase significantly. • Challenge your children to make their own food choices when you are around and guide them where necessary. It would be unrealistic to expect children to be perfect eaters on Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, etc. The message of "moderation" comes into play. They know that after a little “splurging,” things go back to normal the next day and making healthy choices is, once again, the priority. • When it comes to holiday parties — which start before Thanksgiving and carry through to the Super Bowl in February — treat them like birthday parties. There’s going to be good-for-you food along with the not-so-good-for-you food. Load your plate with 80 percent healthy food and allow 20 percent of your plate for the splurge. It's extremely important to always have "wiggle room" to maintain the achievable goal philosophy.

• It’s easy to let the healthy eating rules go during the holiday season. But when you teach about moderation and give your children the ability to make choices, they don’t feel a sense of denial or deprivation. They understand the benefits to making healthy choices and how they feel when they don’t make healthy choices. In this way, the holiday season shouldn’t be any different than other times of the year. • Enjoy the food and family time. Just be sure to incorporate the healthy eating discussion, even during the season with the most temptation. Teach your children the acronym FAB, which stands for Focus, Ask, Believe. Focus on eating healthy. Ask parents and teachers for guidance. Believe that creating healthy habits is important now and for your future.

By Candice Imwalle, author of “Sir Morgan and the Kingdom of Horrible Food.”

s

• The conversation about eating during the holidays isn’t any different than the conversation about eating that you normally have with your kids. The goal is to teach them to eat healthy, but also to eat moderately.

UFC COMING TO PHOENIX

FALL SEASON TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN FALL’S COOLER TEMPERATURES AND WINDY CLIMATES can throw our skin for a loop and leave skin dry, irritated and flaky. Changing seasons call for a few change-ups in our skincare routine. Dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum recommends incorporating these five habits into your daily ritual for a smooth, soft transition into winter. Try adopting one habit per week for five weeks to avoid shocking your skin.

THE ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP will stage its first live event in Phoenix, on Saturday, Dec. 13 at US Airways Center. It will be headlined by a heavyweight clash between former UFC heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos and fourth-ranked Stipe Miocic. The event will also feature at least five competitors with Arizona ties. Dos Santos, the No. 2 contender, returns to the Octagon for the first time since the third of his bouts with current champion Cain Velasquez. Miocic, with consecutive wins over top contenders Roy Nelson, Gabriel Gonzaga and, most recently, Fabio Maldonado, is one of the hottest names in the division. In the co-main event, lightweight Nate Diaz makes his highly anticipated return against third-ranked Rafael Dos Anjos. After a near 13-month hiatus, Diaz looks to reestablish himself as a top contender in the 155-pound division. For more information, visit www.ufc.com.

• Don’t Stop Using Sunscreen. Don’t be fooled by lower temperatures. Cover exposed skin with sunscreen, just as you would in the summer. UV rays are just as strong when hitting the slopes or walking in the rain as they are on the beach. Applying sunscreen daily is the easiest way to prevent sun damage, protect your skin, and not to mention, look younger. Try using products that offer Broad-Spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection, and have a SPF of 30 or greater. • Apply a Night Cream. Recover and restore your skin after a long summer with a night cream that protects, smoothes, calms and regenerates the skin without clogging pores. The intensive and rich properties of night creams stimulate the skin's own renewal process overnight for fresher skin by morning. The pH value of 5.5 promotes the skin's own acid protective barrier against dehydration and irritants.

• Switch Cleansers. If you’ve been using a shine control cleanser (or skating by with a bar of soap), make the switch to a more hydrating, soapfree cleanser. Coconut oil-based cleansers are one of the most effective moisturizing and anti-aging ingredients, and act as antibacterial active ingredient that removes bacteria to prevent the formation of blemishes.

• Exfoliate Flaky Skin. As temperatures cool, practice exfoliating once a week to keep dry flaky skin from shedding around the nose and chin. Select a soft facial scrub (those made with rice bran are less rough) that also uses naturally hydrating ingredients like avocado, coconut or almond oils to avoid excessive dryness and irritation. Immediately following, moisturize with a balancing night cream. • Maximize Moisture in the Shower. Replenish and balance moisture content by using a hydrating body wash and lotion every time you shower. To prevent dry, crackly, irritated skin, pat (don’t rub) skin dry after a hot shower and apply a moisturizer within 3 minutes to seal in hydration. Dr. Marnie B. Nussbaum-Brown, MD, FAAD, is a board certified dermatologist and Chief Medical Spokesperson for Sebamed, www.SebamedUSA.com.

NOV/DEC 2014

SUNDAY, TWO O’CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON and a slew of football games are being watched across America. Fans cheer at every good run and jeer at every hard hit, all the while drinking the obligatory beer and chomping down on a buffet of tasty goods. Going to a sports bar is one way to enjoy the game, or you could go to Arcadia Tavern in Phoenix. It’s more than a sports bar. Instead think of it as a restaurant experience wrought with all the amenities you would expect combined with over 30 flat screen TVs gracing its fresh new walls and sports memorabilia hanging wherever a TV is not. The Arcadia Tavern crowd only adds to the energy of the place, becoming more infectious by the minute and causing even the slightest of fans to take notice of the games playing all around. The bar is big and so are the booths. Arcadia Tavern wants you to enjoy the game, but they want you to be comfortable and able to socialize with the people in your party. With plenty of room to spread out and long tables for large parties, there is a sense of intimacy that can be hard to find in a loud and crowded restaurant. Aaron Burke, Arcadia’s manager, brought out a generous sampling of dishes. After learning that I am originally from New England, a clam chowder made its way to my seat. Nervous, I smiled and

wondered if this was going to even slightly compare to my mother-in-law’s Christmas chowder. What he brought me was a cup of some of the creamiest, clam filled chowder that I have ever had. “If you’re going to go somewhere to eat, you want the real deal,” Burke said. Not overly salted or soupy, it was something that any New Englander would gladly enjoy. Burke insisted that I try the wings with the homemade golden blend sauce. What good is a restaurant, plastered with TVs, if it doesn’t offer incredible wings? Your fingertips will be covered in sauce, as they should be, and you’ll be happy to lick them clean when your plate empties. In order to wash down all of these flavors, a selection of drinks is a must. The restaurant offers many popular beers on tap and has plenty of bottled imports and micro-brews as well. Their mixed drinks on the other hand are pretty special. I began with “Everyone’s Irish,” which was the perfect balance of sweetness made of Jameson, peach schnapps, lemonade and a splash of Sprite. If it’s something with an earthier taste you’re after then try “The Harvest.” Imagine a mojito and a gin and tonic had a love child. The result would be this Ketel One, St. Germaine Elderflower, simple soda, lime and basil concoction. The main event of the meal made its

The vegetables were tender and sitting comfortably in the juices on the plate. Being someone who doesn’t jump for joy at the sight of corned beef, I couldn’t believe it when I was taking bite after bite of the hunk of meat that had been baking for 10 hours in Arcadia Tavern’s kitchen. “You have to marinate it and know how to marinate it the right way,” said Chef Juan Hernandez who is proud of his food that his kitchen prepares fresh, daily from scratch. Most Americans enjoy a burger now and again. There’s the familiar image of a guy manning the grill, flipping burgers and placing them on a bun with a condiment or two and maybe, just maybe, a piece of lettuce. The burger that I was served would surely even make Johnny Cash proud. Complete with pepper jack cheese, buffalo sauce, a chili spiced onion ring, jalapeños and spicy mayo, the “Ring of Fire Burger” is juicy and grilled by a pro. You have your choice of sides, but I recommend you give the sweet tots a try. They might look like your traditional tater-tots stayed in the tanning bed a bit too long, but that’s just because they are made with sweet potatoes. Next to the burger

that brings some heat, the tots create an excellent contrast of subtle sweetness. Don’t worry about a bun that overpowers the burger; It’s the perfect size and serves as the ideal vessel to take the burger from the plate to your mouth until you’re left with a minute slot in your stomach for dessert. The “Arcadia Cookie” is baked in a skillet and comes out hot, soft and gooey with warm chocolate sauce, vanilla bean ice cream and two spoons if you’re in the sharing mood. AS A TYPICAL AMERICAN MALE I consider myself an expert at what makes a great sports bar: Good food, lots of TVs tuned to every game or event possible, cold beer, a full bar and everything served up by gorgeous and friendly female staff. Décor is important too but not enough to dissuade patronage if the grub, booze and flat-screen inventory are firing on all cylinders. Checks all-around at Twin Peaks Camelback. Opened in 2013 and owned by Andy Bayless and Carolyn Vangelos, Twin Peaks Camelback presents a rustic mountain lodge theme, the inside walls resembling square-cut logs with thick chinking in between. Wood is everywhere and game trophies, bows and arrows, fishing, trapping and hunting gear and other manly, outdoor-adventure decorations abound. The lamps are made from antlers and there are posters and prints everywhere promoting sports, adult beverages and the female form. Which brings us to the waitresses. Twin Peaks girls wear snug, red plaid tops in the vein of old Paul Bunyan with tiny khaki shorts, which would make his blue ox blush, and hiking boots. Every girl on the floor is a 10 in both looks and personality. On my last visit our server’s name, honest to goodness, was Destiny. She was a

nice, pretty, engaging and accommodating food service professional who didn’t hesitate to pull up a chair and talk, sharing menu suggestions, answering questions and making us feel very much at home and welcomed; we liked Destiny a lot. The cuisine collection is just what guys want. Twin Peaks Camelback offers all the most popular appetizers; our favorite was the Pulled Pork Sliders with moist, shredded meat packed high on a largerthan-expected bun topped with crisp, fresh homemade coleslaw and a pickle. They offer burgers, tacos, sandwiches, chili, soups and salads. I recommend the Texas-style Philly Cheesesteak with jalapeño peppers, queso and pico de gallo. At Destiny’s suggestion we ordered the Trophy Trout, Mom’s Pot Roast and Green Chile Meat Loaf for dinner and then sat back to enjoy a football game among fellow sports fans doing what we all do best: drinking, enjoying the view and cheering on our favorite teams. The liquor shelf holds all of one’s favorite bourbon, scotch and vodka brands plus a number of signature drinks, wines, and, of course, for the manly men, shots. I mention this only because of The Shotski, a snow ski with four holes spaced bodywidth apart, each a receptacle for a filled shot glass. The drill was simple and fun; four guests line up shoulder to shoulder

going. When Carolyn, the owner, came over to say hello I asked her what the place was like on Saturdays and Sundays. “Weekend’s are all-day parties,” she said. “We open at 9 a.m. on Saturday for the college fans and at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday and we serve a brunch menu until 2 p.m. with breakfast tacos, bacon or steak and eggs and more, plus Bloody Marys and Mimosas for $3 until Noon. Football fans won’t find a better place to watch football.” The Trophy Trout was grilled to perfection, tender and moist with garlic lime butter plus homemade mashed potatoes and sautéed zucchini, squash and carrots. Mom’s Pot Roast, served in a cast iron boat with made-from-scratch gravy and roasted potatoes, green beans and carrots mixed with bacon, onions and corn was to die for. Our favorite though, was the Green Chile Meatloaf with mushroom gravy, sautéed broccoli and a side of macaroni and cheese with bacon bits. The meatloaf

is made from freshly ground beef, thickly sliced, slow-baked and then grilled with green chilies, ketchup and caramelized onions. Delicioso. “All of our food is freshly prepared; nothing is frozen,” added Vangelos. “We use the best local produce we can find and really pride ourselves on the quality of everything we serve.” I had to concur. The food quality was great. When we first sat down at our table I noticed the salt and pepper shakers were actually sugar, cinnamon or confectioner’s sugar shakers like you’d find in a bakery. And throughout our meal we never reached for either; our dinners needed nothing except knives and forks. Twin Peaks Camelback may be the best variation on the sports bar that I’ve come across. and two girls tip the ski to empty the shots into waiting mouths. And what does one chase a shot with? A cold beer. Cold as in 29-degrees Fahrenheit as displayed on a large LED sign near the bar. Beer so cold that by the time a mug arrives at the table, ice has formed at the top, and the beer menu includes America’s most popular labels plus a few of the craft-type brews for those who prefer something more stout. While enjoying our libations we noticed how many TVs there are at Twin Peaks Camelback: 75 flats screens for 300 guests. We were seated at a high top table on the floor, with huge HD monitors everywhere we looked. Booths have their own TVs that can be tuned to whatever game the table chooses. Most of the guests were watching Thursday night NFL football. The crowd was fun and friendly with light-hearted insults tossed freely between tables, depending upon how the games were

waitresses so, so perfect? Carolyn laughed. “For one thing,” she said, “Our waitresses are here to make sure the customers have a great time; That’s all. They don’t fill salt shakers or ketchup bottles or do any other side jobs. They like that. We also help them out with discounts to health clubs and tanning salons. The main thing is, happy employees make happy customers and that’s what we’re committed to.” And as we were leaving one of my companions unashamedly made a reference to one of the greatest sports movies of all time, “Field of Dreams,” asking no one in particular, “Is this heaven?”

For instance, the "Bra-Tacular" event they held in October with the girls trading their Bunyan tops for bikini tops as part of a promotion to benefit local Breast Cancer foundations. “We do theme events all year,” Vangelos said. “For Black Friday before Thanksgiving the girls wear black lingerie, for Christmas they’re all dressed like Santa’s Little Helpers. In December we’re hosting a Cross Fit Competition in the parking lot to benefit the United Phoenix Firefighter Association.” Before we left I had to ask one more question: How and why are all the

The Best Catch simply has to be Lynn Swann’s gravitydefying grab of a Terry Bradshaw’s pass in Super Bowl X. It was late in the second quarter, with Pittsburgh facing third-and-six from its own 10-yard line, tied with Dallas 77. The strong-armed quarterback, who played 14 seasons for Pittsburgh, heaved a bomb to Swann despite Cowboys’ cornerback Mark Washington’s tight coverage, for which he would have been flagged by today’s touchy feely rules. Swanny out-jumped the defender, bobbled the ball, juggled it like one of the Flying Karamazov Brothers and came down with the pigskin for a 53-yard gain. Pittsburgh eventually won 21-17 and despite just four catches the entire game Swann was named Super Bowl MVP, the first receiver to be awarded that honor.

SUPER BOWL

BESTS The most spectacular Super Bowl plays ever THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE Super Bowl is hands-down the most watched television event in America. Last year’s telecast of the Seattle Seahawks’ dominating win over the Denver Broncos drew 111.5 million viewers, setting a new record. This year’s Super Bowl will be held in Glendale, Arizona at University of Phoenix Stadium on February 1, 2015. The local media, along with thousands upon thousands of fans, are hoping the Arizona Cardinals will become the first team to compete for the Vince Lombardi Trophy with a home field advantage. A win would be nice, too. Until then Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine brings you our 10 Super Bowl Bests.

II The Best Run took place in Super Bowl XVII, when Washington beat the Miami Dolphins for its first NFL championship. The Skins were in possession early in the fourth quarter, facing fourth-and-one on their own 45-yard line, trailing 17-13. Coach Joe Gibbs elected to go for it and called 70 Chip, the team’s favorite run play, with QB Joe Theismann handing the ball to John Riggins. Thanks to a great block by tight end Rick Walker, Riggins broke through the line, literally ran over Dolphins defensive back Don McNeal and rambled down the sideline for a touchdown.

The Best Kickoff Return has to be Devin Hester’s 92-yard romp in Super Bowl XLI. It was his rookie season with the Chicago Bears, and his touchdown was scored on the game’s opening kickoff against Indianapolis. Colts place kicker Adam Vinatieri didn’t boot the ball as deep as he wanted, with Hester catching it outside the hash mark on the eight-yard line. With flashbulbs blazing throughout Dolphins Stadium, it was like the parting of the Red Sea as Hester ran to the middle, untouched by the first wave of would-be tacklers and took off to the end zone. He was finally caught and tripped as he crossed the goal line, and it remains the only opening kick returned for a TD in Super Bowl history.

The Best Pass was not a bomb but a bullet thrown by Joe Montana to John Taylor in Super Bowl XXIII. The San Francisco 49ers were down 16-13 to the Cincinnati Bengals with 3:10 left in the game and possession, starting from their own eight-yard line. Montana marched them down the field to the 10-yard line and called timeout with just 39 seconds on the clock. When the ball was snapped, Jerry Rice went in motion while John Taylor, who had lined up as a tight end on the left, ran up the seam. Running back Roger Craig, the intended target on the play, was double covered, so Montana fired away to Taylor for the winning touchdown. The gamewinning reception was Taylor’s only catch of the day.

VII The Best Interception Return, sadly for Arizona Cardinals fans, was executed by Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison in Super Bowl XLIII. With the Steelers holding a 10-7 lead, 18 seconds left in the first half and the Cards optimistically facing first and goal on Pittsburgh’s twoyard line, Kurt Warner threw to Anquan Boldin on a slant route. Harrison anticipated the throw perfectly, made the pick at the goal line and took off down the sideline. He was finally run down and tackled by Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston with all three falling into the corner of the end zone. Touchdown Pittsburgh.

The Best Field Goal was kicked by then New England Patriot Adam Vinatieri in Super Bowl XXXVI. The Pats were leading the St. Louis Rams 17-3 at the start of the fourth quarter but with 1:30 left to play the game was tied. Momentum had definitely shifted yet with no timeouts New England QB Tom Brady led his team down the field to give Vinatieri the chance to avoid overtime. As time expired Vinatieri split the uprights from 48 yards out, giving the Patriots their first NFL Championship.

The Best Onside Kick occurred during Super Bowl XLIV and was the first one ever attempted before the start of the fourth quarter. New Orleans Saints’ Coach Sean Payton made the gutsy call to start the second half with an onside kick against the Indianapolis Colts, despite being on the wrong side of the 10-6 score. Kicker Thomas Morstead hit the ball perfectly while catching the Colts completely by surprise. The ball bounced off the chest of an unprepared Indianapolis receiver, Hank Baskett, and what followed was a mad scramble for possession. The Saints’ thirdstring safety Chris Reis came out of the pile with the ball, and the play completely changed the game’s momentum.

VIII COURTESY OF THE ST. LOUIS RAMS

The Best Tackle, of course, is “The Tackle” made by St. Louis Rams linebacker Mike Jones in Super Bowl XXXIV. With 1:54 left in regulation, the Rams were clinging to a 23-16 lead over the Tennessee Titans, having just scored the go-ahead touchdown. After the Titans received the kickoff, quarterback Steve McNair drove his team to the 10-yard line before calling their last timeout. With only six seconds left when the ball was snapped, McNair threw a dart to wide receiver Kevin Dyson, who caught the ball at the five and turned toward the end zone. Jones was right there and lunged at him, grabbing his leg and pulling him down at the two-yard line. When Dyson’s knee touched the ground, with no time left on the clock, the ball at the end of his desperately outstretched arm was less than a yard shy of the stripe.

The Best Halftime Show took place during Super Bowl XXXVI. Less than five months after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Irish rock band U2 took the stage at the Louisiana Superdome where the New England Patriots were playing the St. Louis Rams. Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larren Mullen, Jr. started with their biggest hit, “Beautiful Day” before moving into a somber version of U2 favorite, “MLK,” as the list of 9/11 casualties was displayed on a huge screen suspended high above the field. Their final song was “Where The Streets Have No Name” and midway through, the screen was dropped with the projected names continuing to scroll over the band and the crowd. Near the end of the show, Bono opened his jacket to reveal an American flag as its liner, delighting fans in attendance and millions watching on TV.

X The Best National Anthem ever was sung by Whitney Houston before the kickoff of Super Bowl XXV matching the New York Giants against the Buffalo Bills. With America just 10 days into the first Gulf War, the Super Bowl was being broadcast internationally for the first time and emotions were high. Houston's rendition was moving and inspirational — just what the country wanted and needed. The recording reached No. 20 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart that same year and when it was re-released in September 2001, it made it to No. 6 — the only time the national anthem became a pop hit. ▲

Larry Fitzgerald’s 64-Yard TD Reception in Super Bowl XLIII The goal for every NFL team is to hoist the Vince Lombardi Trophy at season’s end as confetti rains from the skies above. For the Cardinals, this is as close as they’ve ever come. While the Cardinals have had very little postseason success since moving to the Valley — at least until recently — the playoff run of 2009 nearly made up for it all. Arizona finished the regular season at 9-7, capturing its first NFC West division title en route to the franchise’s first-ever Super Bowl appearance at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Cardinals, led by veteran quarterback Kurt Warner, struggled out of the gate early and trailed the Steelers 20-7 heading into the fourth quarter before mounting one of the more unlikely comebacks in Super Bowl history, scoring 16 unanswered points, capped by Larry Fitzgerald’s 64-yard touchdown reception to take a 21-20 lead with 2:37

Magnificent Counting down the Arizona Cardinals’ seven most memorable moments since moving to the Valley of the Sun in 1988

By Byron Kline PHOTOS BY GENE LOWER

IT’S BEEN 26 YEARS since the Cardinals remaining in the fourth quarter. In the end, it wasn’t meant to be, as Ben Roethlisberger connected with Santonio Holmes for a six yard score with 35 seconds to play, stealing the ultimate victory from Arizona. Still, for most Cardinals fans, the memory of Fitzgerald breaking away from the Steelers defense remains the single greatest memory in franchise history.

While the first couple of decades proved to be a true test for even the most loyal Big Red fans, the team’s move to Glendale has helped rejuvenate the league’s oldest continuously run franchise. As the Valley gets set to host its third Super Bowl (second at University of Phoenix Stadium), we count down the Cardinals seven most memorable moments since moving to Arizona.

2009 NFC Championship Game Win Over Philadelphia Easily the most memorable win in Arizona Cardinals history, Kurt Warner connected with Larry Fitzgerald for three first half touchdowns as the Cardinals jumped out to a 24-6 halftime lead. But Philadelphia — making its fourth NFC Championship game appearance in eight years — and quarterback Donovan McNabb refused to go down without a fight. McNabb hooked up with tight end Brent Celek for a pair of third quarter touchdown passes to pull the Eagles within five before jumping ahead 25-24 on a 62-yard touchdown catch by DeSean Jackson, with 10:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. However the Cardinals would respond, marching 72 yards on 14 plays to take a 32-25 lead after an eight-yard, Tim Hightower touchdown run and a Ben Patrick two-point conversion. McNabb and the Eagles threatened once more but stalled out at the Arizona 47-yard line, sending the Cardinals to their first ever Super Bowl.

Appropriately nicknamed the “Cardiac Cards,” 1998 was a season of late-game comebacks and nail-biting finishes in the desert. Led by second-year quarterback Jake Plummer, eight of Arizona’s 16 regular season games were decided by three or fewer points, with the Cardinals holding a 7-1 record in those games. Needing a win over the visiting San Diego Chargers to secure its first playoff berth since moving to the Valley, Arizona staked out to a 13-6 lead, thanks in large part to safety Kwame Lassiter who had a career-high four interceptions that afternoon. San Diego evened the score at 13 when quarterback Craig Whelihan found an open Ryan Thelwell for a 30-yard touchdown strike with 16 seconds to go. But on the ensuing kickoff, Arizona’s Eric Metcalfe returned a squib kick to the San Diego 46-yard line, giving Plummer and the Cardinals one last chance to end the franchise’s 16-year playoff drought. Just like he had all season, Plummer delivered when it mattered most, completing an 11-yard pass to wide receiver Frank Sanders which set up Chris Jacke’s 52-yard gamewinning field goal as time expired, sending the capacity crowd of 71,600 at Sun Devil Stadium into a frenzy. Arizona finished the regular season with a 9-7 record, the team’s first winning season since 1984, and made its first playoff appearance since 1982. The Cardinals won their final three games of the regular season in dramatic fashion, defeating the Eagles by three points in overtime on the road, the Saints by two at home and on the final play of the game against San Diego.

As a seventhround draft pick by the Cardinals, Tillman defied the odds and became a stalwart for Arizona's defense, totaling 247 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and three interceptions over four seasons. But Tillman's greatest impact came off the field when he turned down a three year, $3.6 million contract extension from the Cardinals in 2002 to enlist in the U.S. Army, eight months after the September 11 attacks. Tragically, Tillman died on April 22, 2004, while on tour in Afghanistan by way of friendly fire, but his memory continues to live on. At Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, ASU

Cardinals Defeats Packers 51-45 in 2010 NFC Wild Card Contest It was only fitting that in the highest-scoring postseason game in NFL history, Arizona was able to prevail at home on a defensive touchdown. After leading a miraculous comeback, Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers was stripped by cornerback Michael Adams on a third down pass attempt. The loose ball bounced awkwardly off Rodgers’ foot and into the hands of Dansby, who lumbered 17 yards into the end zone, giving Arizona a thrilling 51-45 victory over the Packers. Dansby actually began the game by deflecting a Rodgers pass that was intercepted by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, which eventually resulted in a one-yard Tim Hightower touchdown run to put the Cardinals ahead 7-0 early on. Arizona, who was without injured wide receiver Anquan Boldin, managed to rack up an astonishing 531 yards of offense against a Packers defense that finished the regular season ranked number two overall in the league. Quarterback Kurt Warner threw more touchdowns than incompletions, completing 29 of 33 passes for 379 yards and five touchdowns that day. Arizona led by as many as 21 points in the third quarter before Rodgers and the Packers scored on four consecutive drives to tie the game at 38. After a 17-yard Steve Breaston touchdown put the Cardinals ahead by seven midway through the fourth quarter, Rodgers connected with Spencer Havner to draw even again at 45. Kicker Neil Rackers, who had been 16-17 on the season and a perfect 10-10 from within 40 yards, missed a 34-yard field goal attempt as time expired in the fourth quarter, sending the game into overtime. Green Bay won the coin toss and elected to receive. Three plays later, Dansby sent the Cardinals into the next round with his dramatic overtime score.

Arizona’s 1998 Road Playoff Win Over Dallas Oddly, in a season full of late game theatrics, the Cardinals cruised to a convincing victory over Dallas in the franchise’s first playoff game since moving to Arizona, dominating the Cowboys 20-7 in Arlington. Dallas previously defeated Arizona twice that season and had won 16 of the last 17 games against the Cardinals, including nine in a row at Texas Stadium, but struggled to muster anything against the stingy Arizona defense all afternoon. The Cardinals managed to keep the Cowboys’ primary playmakers in check, intercepting Troy Aikman three times, while limiting Emmitt Smith to just 74 yards on the ground and Michael Irvin to four catches for 32 yards. Arizona scored on its first offensive drive of the day as Plummer found running back Adrian Murrell for a 12-yard touchdown to jump ahead 7-0. The Cardinals led by 10 at halftime and increased their lead to 17 when Larry Centers hauled in a three-yard touchdown pass from Plummer in the third quarter. With the win, Arizona advanced to the divisional round the following week, falling to Minnesota 41-21 on the road.

On November 7, 2000, Prop 302 captured 52% of the public vote, giving the Cardinals a new stadium in Glendale and a permanent home in the Valley. Nearly six years later, the opening of the new stadium signaled a rejuvenation of the Arizona Cardinals franchise and its fan base. No longer would the Cardinals have to share a college football stadium with the Arizona State Sun Devils, their roommates in Tempe for 17 years. The very first game at the new stadium, which at the time was called Cardinals Stadium, took place on August 12, 2006 in a preseason match-up against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where the Cardinals won 21-13. They played their first regular season game on September 10, 2006 against the San Francisco 49ers, and once again Arizona was victorious, defeating its rivals 34-27. University of Phoenix was awarded naming rights to the stadium later that month and University of Phoenix Stadium has been the Cardinals’ ever since. Since moving into University of Phoenix Stadium, Arizona is 55-57 overall, with three winning seasons, two NFC West division titles, and one NFC conference championship. ▲

Your next Western destination may take you through the rugged grasslands of the open range and, as you climb the mountains, a murder of crows might greet you in a Ponderosa corridor. The chilly mornings echo with elk bugling throughout the Mogollon Rim as the bucks pass through the forest's jade anonymity. As you follow AZ State Highways 87 and 260-East through “Rim Country,” juniper, pinyon and ponderosa pine adorn the uplands. Seasons come to life with the vibrant colors that greet you at every pass in the environs of remote Arizona towns, such as Strawberry and Pine. Located only 150 scenic miles from the Grand Canyon (about an hour and a half from Black Canyon City and two hours north from Phoenix), Cabins on Strawberry Hill rests in the heart of Mogollon Rim Country in central Arizona. The resort’s cozy cabins are family owned and operated year-round making them available for all kinds of occasions. The clean, well-furnished, one- and two-room cabins all boast a full kitchen and are sure to meet your needs for rustic relaxation. The Cabins are smoke-free, pet-friendly and include television and wireless Internet in each cabin for less rustic pursuits. Guests are encouraged to indulge in serene meditation, healing, rejuvenation and professional massage therapy, but the resort is just as well suited for business meetings or weddings. Professional event planning and local food catering services are available. You can accent your memorable stay with the numerous attractions that only Rim Country can offer. “Our wood stoves are perfect for relaxing in winter or for warming up after sledding with the kids,” comments owner-operator, Rick Finkler. “Since our cabins are open year-round and we border the National Forest, we get to enjoy all the benefits of wildlife watching, hiking, exploring and the nearby fishing and swimming,” Rick added. In winter, the cabins provide comfort and warmth against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, while, in summer, they offer a cool getaway. Still others will be drawn to the collage of scarlet and gold aspens and cottonwoods in autumn, along with the ubiquitous wild berries.

FAST FACTS

• Strawberry is located on Highway 87/260 West, at the base of the Mogollon Rim. The town of Strawberry takes it name from the wild strawberries growing in the area when it was founded. • Strawberry is home to the oldest standing schoolhouse in Arizona. In 1884, the families living in Strawberry, petitioned to establish a school. After a location dispute ensued, the location was determined by cowboys using a calf rope and counting the number of lengths midpoint two destinations and where the one room log schoolhouse stands today. • Tonto Natural Bridge is known to be the world's largest natural travertine bridge. Located between Payson and Pine, Arizona, the 150-foot-wide limestone bridge arches 183 feet above sparkling Pine Creek. • Arizona has approximately 90,373 miles of river, of which 57.3 miles are designated as Wild & Scenic — less than 1/10th of 15 of the state's river miles. Fossil Creek is one of only two National Wild & Scenic rivers in Arizona. • Tonto Natural Bridge State Park has won three Best of Rim Country awards, including Best Historic Site, Best Place to Hike and Best Day Trip.

Exploring the area is easy and appetizing. Along the three short miles that separate the towns of Strawberry and Pine, you can choose from a variety of restaurants to fuel your day’s activities. But few places offer the unique ambiance of the Randall House. The Randall Family and proprietors Barbara and Patrick O’Connor have maintained this outstanding example of functioning-history and give their guests a glimpse into the past. In 1998, Mary Ellen Randall, just prior to her passing at the age of 92, expressed concern for what would happen after she was gone. Within one month, Barbara O’Connor, who resembles Mary Ellen, was preparing food in-house for guests just as Mary Ellen would have done. Fresh Greek, balsamic bleu and Waldorf salads with made-from-scratch dressings complement the omelets, quiches and fresh vegetable soups on the varied menu, and the homemade pies and pastries still greet customers at the door. A full day in Strawberry and Pine should include a trip to Fossil Creek and another to the Tonto Natural Bridge. Arizona has approximately 90,373 miles of river, yet only 57.3 miles (less than one-tenth) are designated as “wild and scenic.” Fossil Creek, fed by springs coming from the cliffs of the Mogollon Rim, is one of only two national “wild and scenic” rivers in Arizona. You will remember that visit to the Tonto Natural Bridge, renowned as the world's largest natural travertine bridge. Located between Payson and Pine, the 150-foot-wide limestone bridge arches 183 feet above sparkling Pine Creek. Frequent guests at the Bridge include bobcats, black bears, cottontails, elk, grey foxes, five species of bats and owls (for those that give a hoot). The community and Arizona State Parks have joined forces to protect this natural treasure. “Since I have been here [since May 2010], I have seen the Park upgrade many of the facilities to make for a better visitor experience,” Park Manager, Steven Jakubowski, stated. “A large group-use picnic ramada was constructed. This new ramada has the capacity to host much larger groups and special events. New interpretive kiosk panels were installed and upgrades to the kiosks done,” shared Jakubowski. Upgrades, longer hours and now open seven days a week, the Tonto Natural Bridge is probably one of the most incredible sites in Arizona. “Visitors consistently tell me how fascinating and what a wonderful place this is,” Jakubowksi commented proudly. “Future plans for the park include: a much larger, special-use pavilion/ramada to host very large groups; the planting of many more fruit trees to restore the old historic orchard; the addition of an outdoor-themed and designed play area for children; the construction of several rental cabins for overnight stays; and, most importantly, the re-opening of the historic lodge for group bookings.” A wind-down from a day of sightseeing might involve an elk and buffalo burger from That Brewery located just a stone’s throw from the Arizona Trail in Pine. That Brewery is big on beer and fills their frosty mugs accordingly. Delicious comfort foods include mac and cheese and the warmed, made-to-order crispy donut holes for dessert. To further wet your pallet, experience the Ranch at Fossil Creek. Also home of the Fossil Creek Creamery owned and operated by John and Joyce Bittner. “We are a farmstead creamery, which means we do everything from A to Z. This includes breeding, birthing, raising, milking and packaging,” Mr. Bittner shared. We are a working ranch and raise llamas and dairy goats, and you can hike with the llamas by appointment,” Bittner added. Of course you won’t want to miss the creamy, undeniably flavorful artisan goat’s milk cheeses and melt in your mouth fudge. Other recreational options include fishing for rainbow trout at Rancho Tonto Catch-a-Trout, taking an airplane ride to view the Rim Country, or retracing General Crook’s Trail. It wouldn't be fair to let you leave Rim Country without making a stop at MamaJoe's, where Mama and Joe have been making magic for many years. Located nearby the Cabins on Strawberry Hill, it is well worth an extra day’s stay in order to taste the love put into these old-fashioned, home-cooked meals. When we stopped in the afternoon after a trip to the Tonto Natural Bridge, we were greeted by Mama and Joe prepping for the evening with fresh eggplant in their hands and warm smiles on their faces. MamaJoe’s shrimp scampi was a perfect concoction of large fresh shrimp lightly coated with breadcrumbs, garlic and lemon, served alongside a large portion of spaghetti marinara. Just when we thought we were safely at the end of our meal of amazing, authentic Italian dishes, we could not resist the friendly suggestion from Mama herself that we try her pistachio ice cream pie with graham cracker crust or warm chocolate fudge cake. “It will settle your stomach,” Mama said with a smile and a glint in her eye.

Double

TROUBLE The radio team of Roc and Manuch have been entertaining Valley sports fans for 10 years, and there is no slowing them down anytime soon

By Curt Blakeney PHOTOS BY DEREK BONDIE

THIS BROADCASTING DUO has become a staple on the Valley sports airwaves for more than a decade … and counting. Just recently, Mike Muraco and Dan Manucci — better known as Roc and Manuch to their loyal radio fans — celebrated their 10-year anniversary. Most sports fans in the Valley have 1060 AM programmed into their car radio, and it stops early and often on “AZ Sports Talk” during the afternoon drive-time slot of 3-6 PM on weekdays. The pairing of the two is a match made in sports heaven: Muraco is affable and passionate, a great counterpart to the X’s and O’s of Manuch, the ex-jock who played quarterback at Kansas State and in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills. Besides their impressive 10-year track record, which makes them the longest running local sports radio show in the Valley, Roc and Manuch continue to rack up impressive sports celebrity interviews, great debates and a growing legion of fans. The guys aren’t magnets for TMZ type controversies; they prefer to keep the conversation to the action on the field with an even-tempered mix of intelligent sports banter, pop culture quips and spot-on analysis. They don’t dumbdown the dialogue to ratchet up ratings. You won’t hear any ridiculous over-the-top rants coming from their lips. AZSAL sat down with Roc and Manuch to get their pulse on the sports landscape. Here is our conversation.

AZSAL: In your opinion, who was the greatest Arizona athlete you've ever witnessed, and why? Roc: I have to go with Charles Barkley. I moved here about the same time he was traded to Phoenix. Born in Philadelphia and growing up a huge 76ers fan, I was excited to have Sir Charles follow me to Arizona! He made an instant impact on this community, led the Suns to a 62-20 regular season record, and snatched the league MVP award in the process. I thought for sure the team was going to win the NBA title. At the time, I was actually bartending in the Copper Club at America West Arena for the NBA Finals. Sadly, the Suns fell in six games to the Chicago Bulls, but Barkley’s impact on the sports landscape was undeniable. Manuch: This is such a tough question, because I've played with and seen so many great athletes in Arizona. But two individuals that I played with were Ron Washington, my former wide receiver at McClintock High School, who then went on to play at Arizona State and then the Kansas City Chiefs, and Mickey Hatcher who attended Mesa High School. I had a chance to play football and baseball with him at Mesa Community College as well. He eventually went on to play football and baseball at Oklahoma and then have a great baseball career with the Dodgers and Twins. Ron was so fast, had great hands and great moves. He was a great track star as well. He was one of those athletes who could have played any sport and become a pro. He was one of

RocManuch_MagSeven 11/14/14 11:01 AM Page 4

the best playmakers on offense I have played with. A huge game changer. Mickey was a great receiver at MCC, as well as the best punter and kicker I have ever played with. Long, high punts, and back in those days, he could kick field goals from 55 yards very easily. He did everything but play defense. He was also one of the best natural hitters I have played with. Hubie Brooks was also on that 1976 MCC baseball team, guys you knew would play pro baseball someday. AZSAL: If you had to nominate anyone to the Arizona Sports Mount Rushmore, who would it be and why? Manuch: I'd nominate Frank Kush. He put ASU and the state of Arizona on the map with his football teams, especially in those early to mid ’70s. The teams he coached had so much speed and intensity week in and week out. It was because of his coaching that the original founding members created the Fiesta Bowl. He took great athletes and made them into some of the best teams during that era. Roc: No brainer, Jerry Colangelo. He made the Phoenix Suns into one of the most successful organizations in the NBA. He is also credited with bringing the D-Backs and Coyotes to Arizona. I love what he is doing with Grand Canyon University, too. AZSAL: What is the greatest moment you've ever witnessed on the field/court/ice while covering sports in Arizona? Manuch: I was doing the Cardinals pre- and post-game shows from 1992 to 2003. It would have to be Chris Jacke's 52-yard field goal against the San Diego Chargers in 1998 to send the Cardinals to their first playoff game since 1975. It

was the last game of the year. Jacke had just kicked two gamewinning field goals over the two games prior to this victory. There were only 16 seconds left, and Eric Metcalf had a great return to the Chargers 44-yard line. Jake Plummer completed a pass and only 3 seconds remained. Jackie hit the 52 yarder and Sun Devil Stadium just erupted with 72,000 fans going nuts and storming the field. I was sitting in the stands for that game with my kids and my dad, which made it a great experience. Roc: To be honest, I do not have one single moment. I have a collection. First, we have to go back to the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, when Boise State trailed heavily-favored Oklahoma 35-28 with 18 seconds left and facing fourth-and-18 from the 50-yard line. Boise State’s quarterback, Jared Zabransky, completed a pass to Drisan James just short of the first down, but he lateralled the ball to receiver Jerard Rabb, who took it to the house for the tying touchdown. Then in overtime, down 42-35 on fourth down, wide receiver Vinny Perretta completed a 3-yard pass to tight end Derek Schouman for a touchdown. Head Coach Chris Petersen elected to go for two, and Zabransky faked a throw to his right before handing it behind his back to Ian Johnson on the Statue of Liberty play for the winning twopoint conversion. Johnson would propose to his girlfriend, a Boise State cheerleader, on the sideline after the game. I was on the sideline and saw it all! Second, it felt like a win on the ice when the Glendale City Council voted “yes” to the amended arena-lease deal with Renaissance Sports and Entertainment. The vote ended a dramatic four-year ownership saga. And finally, who can forget Luis Gonzalez’s bloop single to knock in the winning run off legendary New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera in Game 7 of the 2001 Fall Classic, and capturing the Diamondbacks first World Series title. AZSAL: Who was the nicest guy ever associated with Arizona sports and why? Roc: It might not be the most popular answer, due to the recent events, but for me John Junker is by far the nicest sports executive that I have ever interviewed or worked with. I’ve been on the Fiesta Bowl committee for more than 16 years, and I know firsthand that Junker was instrumental in getting Arizona to host the National Championships thanks to his tireless efforts to get the University of Phoenix Stadium built. Without Junker and his staff, the stadium vote would not have passed.

RocManuch_MagSeven 11/14/14 11:01 AM Page 5

AZSAL: What is the one thing that drives you crazy about sports fans in Arizona?

Roc: Fans inability to act like they’ve been there before. I wish more fans would show more class at games. Maybe winning will eventually cure that. Manuch: I grew up in Tempe and have seen pro sports fans evolve over the years, but the one thing that drives me crazy about Arizona sports fans is how fickle they are whether their team is winning or losing. They don't stay with their team come hell or high water. You get the feeling that if the local teams aren't winning, they won’t support them or show up for games. Fair-weather fans and bandwagon fans are aplenty in Arizona.

Manuch: There have been so many nice and classy guys that I have come across over these last 10 years. I would have to say these individuals, in no particular order, are the ones that come to mind first and foremost: Dave McGinnis, Jerry Colangelo, Derek Hall, Larry Fitzgerald and Kurt Warner. But talk about nice … Coyotes GM Don Maloney and Head Coach Dave Tippett always had time for Roc and me over the last four years of the team’s bankruptcy. Talk about class!

AZSAL FAST FACTS

When did you know that you wanted to get into radio? It all started in junior high school. I would go into my bedroom at night and turn on this huge radio my dad had won in a golf tournament. It was the precursor of the boom box. I would listen to Vince Scully announce the Dodgers’ games, and Al McCoy broadcast the Suns’ games. The way they painted the picture mesmerized to me. That motivated me to make crank phone calls as a radio DJ while I was in high school. My high school buds, Mike Core, Steve Conly and Ron Washington can validate that for you! Where did you grow up? I grew up in Tempe and went to McClintock High School. I graduated in 1975. Your funniest Christmas moment? We’d always go to Midnight Mass at Mt Carmel Catholic Church. Then after opening presents until 3 a.m., I’d go hide under my sisters’ beds and, about a half hour after they went to sleep, start shaking the beds. They would run out of the room screaming for my dad. That was worth the day of being grounded. Best Christmas gift you ever received? It was in 5th grade. My dad/Santa got me my first helmet, shoulder pads, and a real NFL football. I think I slept with all of that on for about three days. And, yes, I really did sleep with my football! And not to mention, the electric football game I got that same Christmas. It was one that I will never forget.

ROC What was your first radio gig? I did overnights on Ohio University campus radio station, ACRN, cable radio. It was a rock station format. We played a lot of Michael Stanley band, Ohio's finest. My DJ name was Mike Rockins, named after a player for the Cleveland Browns: Chris Rockins. When did you know that you wanted to get into radio? I wanted to be a morning disc jockey for WMMR 93.3 in Philadelphia. I grew up listening to John DeBella and the Morning Zoo, but I really feel in love with the industry when I arrived in Phoenix in 1992. My favorite show was Tim & Mark on KDKB-FM 93.3. Their “Helium Hilarity” and prank calls were absolutely hilarious. Those guys were the best! Where did you grow up? I was born in Philadelphia and grew up across the river in South Jersey, Washington Township. Best Christmas gift you ever received? I was 15 years old when Santa brought me a used Garelli moped. It went at least 32 mph downhill. Your best sports job? I was the public relations director for the Phoenix Firebirds, the AAA team for the San Francisco Giants. I was a big fish in a little pond. Only the Suns and Cardinals were around back then. Best job ever? I was a house boy at the Alpha Delta Pie sorority at Ohio University. I got paid $3.50 an hour, plus two meals a day. All I did for the ladies was change light bulbs, clean the dishes, and take out the trash nightly.

MANUCH Your best prank on Roc? The station continues to run drops of Roc and his issues with word pronunciations and articulations. With a mom as an English teacher, it’s funny he struggles with it.

1 Rocket Resale 23 W. Southern Ave., Tempe, AZ 85282 www.rocketresale.com

“I think life is about making reasons to do things!” Stormy the other half of Rocket Resale said, taking the words right out of my mouth. When you walk into Rocket Resale, you feel like you just stumbled in and found yourself lost in a time capsule with The All American Rejects and Run DMC. This place is for the bizarre at heart. Rocket Resale started with yard sales, mini vans and first Fridays. Not only does Rocket Resale buy, sell and trade, they are also home to the work of 26 local artists. You can catch some of their work on display in the store at any given time. What impressed me the most about this store was their ability to cater to the masses. They offer sizes anywhere from 0-3x for both sexes, which includes their all-American made clothing line, Rocket Rebel. In the world of fashion, that is unapologetically unheard. But wait there’s more! Not only do they sell clothes, they have an outstanding selection of hand-crafted jewelry with pieces starting at $4.00 — that’s less than your Venti blah blah blah at Starbucks every morning! Rocket Resale is where it’s at, whether you’re looking for rockabilly pin up or Vera Wang closed toe metallic pumps, or just looking for that special accessory to make your outfit pop.

The Secret Village 2601 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016

This charm in the desert even has a husband or boyfriend hangout section — need I say more? Oh but I must! The Secret Village has to be one of Arizona’s best-kept secrets, hands down. Sure, prices vary, but you’re not going to find reusable red cocktail cups for $9.99 anywhere; I looked. They have so much to offer at this unique little spot that I can only focus my attention on one block of this amazing village. With that, I give you The Pet Corner, which is a must even if you don’t visit for anything else. This quaint little spot offers everything you need to spoil your pet because, as the saying goes, pets really are like children dressed in fur. At The Pet Corner you will find doggy treats at two for $1.95 and doggy donuts (yes that’s a thing). If you are celebrating your beloved pet’s birthday, make sure to pick up a doggy BDay Bone topped with sprinkles for $9.99! Going somewhere fancy and tired of the average walk in the park? Then fetch a three-piece tie and collar set that your pooch would love for only $5.39. As important as hydration is in the desert it’s even more so for your thirsty pets, so pick up a doggy bowl for $1.99 or better yet a 3 piece doggy bowl set for $7.99. This place is for animal lovers and their adorable pets. If you’re looking for an exclusive shopping adventure, get lost at The Pet Corner where I’m pretty sure all dogs go to heaven.

3 Zola Bell’s Vintage Emporium 7003 N. 58th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301

Who said antique was a boring word? Zola Bell’s is everything antique on a silver platter. Bonnie, the owner, was not only welcoming but boy did she have some stories to tell. I felt like I could sit and talk to Bonnie for hours. She describes her store as, “The most fun allowed in one place at one time.” I couldn’t agree with her more. With 16 different dealers and 20% off sales on what I call the vintage alphabet, you can find everything from every era from A to Z. I have never been so many places at one time without technically leaving the building. It’s unbelievable that Zola Bell’s has only been here for six years and effortlessly combines Egyptian figurines, Charlie Chaplin trinkets and Star Wars memorabilia all under one roof. They also have an array of vintage records ranging from the Beach Boys, Johnny Cash to Duke Ellington. If you’re an old-fashioned candy lover, they sell vintage candy including Lucky Lights and Charro. You can even enjoy getting your fortune read by Zoltan.

Located at the Shoppes at Casa Poloma in Chandler, Urbayn is perfect for the trendy shopper or gift giver. If you are celebrating a birthday, you can find sparkling champagne glasses with your age on them, whether you’re turning 21 or 80, as well as decked out and bedazzled bottle charms for $30. I particularly loved the greeting card section. From weddings to new babies and “I miss you” cards, you will find exactly what to say to the most important people in your life. Single guys need a girlfriend cards, yeah they got ‘em. You may also appreciate “the lies for all occasions” and “break up and rejections for all occasions” booklets for $12. If you happen to be a man trying to impress a special lady, do the following and thank me later. Pick up bubble bath by Lollia from $22, get the lavender and honey scent and use your creativity to make the night interesting. In the end Urbayn is classy and timeless: you are guaranteed to say, “I do!”

5 Lawn Gnome Bookstore 905 N. 5th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Are you a book lover looking for a means of escape? Or do you know someone who appreciates a good book in an era where everything is literally at your fingertips? Lawn Gnome Bookstore is a breath of fresh air for those who still believe in bookmarks. Lawn Gnome is exactly what it sounds like, an actual house with a porch and a lawn in the heart of downtown Phoenix with a variety of books from poetry, fiction and sci-fi to mystery and romance. Prices for hardbacks are as low as six dollars and paperbacks can be picked up for just a buck. You will be pleasantly surprised that all of the prices for the books are written by hand on the first page. I know I certainly was when I went to pay for a book, and it rang up for $0.25. I asked the cashier if the price was right! Apparently all of the books on the porch are just a quarter a piece. Lawn Gnome is like the coolest library to ever exist, except the purchase prices are cheaper than any late fees would be.

When the Four Horsemen Come, They’ll Be Driving These The 2014 Chevrolet Reaper takes the soul right out of the competition

▲ ▲ ▲

Chevy was smart about the Reaper. The truth is that the Reaper maximizes on the shortcomings of the Ford Raptor.

I THINK I’M JUSTIFIED in having had a relative amount of trepidation when it came to taking the wheel of the Reaper, Chevy’s latest concoction that melds the durability and strength of the Silverado, the performance edge of Lingenfelter and the aesthetic appeal of Southern Comfort Automotive. Yeah, the name is ominous enough and with my driving record effectively acting as a death note there was some intuitive hesitation too, but that wasn’t the stem of it. See, the Reaper had one primary objective: give the Ford Raptor a chase. It’s hard to believe that any factory vehicle could take on the hardened chassis, all-terrain maneuverability and horsed-up engine the Raptor brought to the line.

I had no doubt the Reaper could out toe the line, but that’s not all I was looking for. Taking the Raptor 50 mph in the desert with confidence, like U.S. Border Patrol does, was insane. While I didn’t get to take the Reaper off-road, I did have the opportunity to really open her up on the street, which is where she really shows off. To be perfectly honest it’s not necessarily an equal showing despite the media angle that the Reaper is meant to take on the Raptor head to head. Chevy was smart about the Reaper. The truth is that the Reaper maximizes on the shortcomings of the Ford Raptor. It depends on how liberal your definition of “factory” is since the Reaper technically comes out as a Silverado Z71. Similar to say the Corvette Z06, the Reaper is made to order. It first heads off to Lingenfelter Performance Engineering for a serious power boost. The 2014 Reaper package includes a 550 hp Lingenfelter TV1900 Magnuson Supercharged 6.2 liter engine. From there the Reaper heads south to Southern Comfort Automotive for some cosmetic styling. SoCo shines up the grill, loads a Rigid Industries Floodlight system and Fox Racing remote reservoir shocks

deck I was sucked back in my seat, as there was no lag on the blower. What pleasantly surprised me the most was the fact that there isn’t a lot of body roll for a lifted truck. Usually a couple inches creates a compromise in handling, but the Reaper felt secure and was responsive at every turn. When it comes to raw power the

with a Ride Tech suspension package. While it’s easy to write off the Reaper as a show truck rather than a functional sand romper thanks to the 20-inch wheels, custom stitched headrest covers and Reaper graphics, the fact of the matter is when you hear the Corsa Performance exhaust pipes grumbling you know you’re looking at more than the prettiest ballerina in the fruit cup. Pulling out of Freeway Chevrolet and onto Ray Road, I felt like a king among peasants as I looked down from on high. The Silverado is already a pretty tall truck and with a 3-inch lift you go Goliath real quick in the Reaper. I wanted to get on the supercharger sooner than later so I pulled onto the I-10. VITAL STATS

• The Reaper offers up an EcoTec V8 in either 5.3- or 6.2-liter sizing. • Both breathing through Corsa exhaust systems and tuned with custom software by Lingenfelter. • The big news here is an optional 1900cc Magnuson blower—hitched to the 5.3liter model, output sits at a stout 475 hp. The 6.2-liter? Try 550 hp. • Price as tested $55,000

Reaper takes the roar right our of the Raptor’s talon. As far as towing the line actually goes, the Reaper is rated at 9,600 hundred pounds with the four-wheel drive. There is no rating with the supercharger but a little common sense and some imagination will take you the rest of the way. While the Raptor could do a lot of tricks—boulder climbing, sand running and so on, it fell short as a street presence. The Reaper can play in the sandbox and on the asphalt, which might be why 2014 Raptor was the last year for them. The Reaper can still be a Silverado, an expensive Silverado ringing in at $86,000. That’s the hit that took me back to reality. I guess if you like the power of a Camaro and showiness of the Corvette, but are of the high riding, monster towing persuasion, the Reaper is your long awaited solace in a world that was dominated by mediocrity and wannabees. Yes, the Raptor was sick, and at half the price of the Reaper why not get some joy out of that ride, but when it comes to the all important duality of any vehicle, fun versus function, the Reaper makes the most of its price tag. Competitors be warned; Blue Öyster Cult would have got it all wrong singing about this one. Special thanks to Mike Cook at Freeway Chevrolet.

Like exercise for your body, it is never too early or too late to give your skin the care that it needs and deserves.

HOW FORTUNATE DO WE ALL FEEL to be living in the Valley this time of year? While much of the nation is bracing for winter, here in the southwest, we enjoy the warm sun and allure of outdoor activities. Unfortunately, the dry air and sun create the perfect storm for exacerbating skin conditions and premature aging. When living an active lifestyle, we often fail to address skin fitness and health during and after our outside activities. Like exercise for your body, it is never too early or too late

to give your skin the care that it needs and deserves. Effects of excessive sun exposure when living in the southwest Simply put, sun exposure makes you look old. Your DNA has been damaged on a cellular level by cumulative UV damage. Continued sun exposure can make you particularly vulnerable to sun-induced aging characterized by loss of elasticity and less pliability in your skin, as well as facial sagging and sun spots. Photoaging occurs over a period of years. With repeated exposure to the sun, the skin loses the ability to repair itself. Sunweakened skin ceases to spring back much earlier than skin protected from UV rays. Skin also becomes loose, wrinkled and leathery much earlier with unprotected exposure to sunlight. While it may seem that the signs of photoaging appear overnight, they actually lie invisible beneath the surface of the skin for years. Precautions we can take to avoid skin damage Protection from the sun is the easiest anti-aging step you can take. It is inexpensive, quick and proven. Maintaining good skin

Post-activity skin care recommendations to consider Prevention is key to saving skin, but there are things you can do to help repair damaged skin. • Shower and cleanse shortly after your workout. It's important to reduce the amount of impurities that could be reabsorbed by the skin. Use a cleanser containing vitamins A and E and a pH balancing component along with a loofah for exfoliation. Apply a pH balancing deodorant. • Moisturize. A light moisturizer containing a natural plant squalane component will help to protect and nourish your skin. Find one containing Vitamin C and antioxidants that promotes circulation, stimulates collagen and brightens skin.

• Eat right. Foods rich in vitamins C and E, such as leafy greens, oranges and strawberries will help you produce healthy skin cells. The selenium in these foods can help protect your skin against both sun damage and aging. Each season of life brings new skin changes and concerns, but many conditions are preventable with the proper education and treatment. The secret to healthy skin involves changing your habits and adopting some products that deliver what they promise. ▲

health is more difficult during our dry hot summers. A few suggestions that might help if you plan on spending a day outside: • Solar protection is your first line of defense against the UVA and UVB rays. Use a lightweight zinc oxide SPF 30 formula that contains octyl methoxycinnamate — an organic sunblock that naturally protects your skin. Sun block should be applied every 2 to 3 hours. • Hydrate with a mineral containing fluid replacement drink. Drink more than you think you need. The amount of water needed to heal the dehydration of our skin and body is always greater than the amount required to merely quench our thirst.

Dr. Joseph Rucker is a board certified plastic surgeon who has developed a proprietary skin care line called Enza (www.enza.com) specifically formulated around lifestyle, age and location.

AZSAL RECOMMENDED SKINCARE PRODUCTS 1 • Enza Liquid Gold’s dynamic formula is designed to shield skin from the effects of stress. Top steps to a successful listing The importance of staging and photography, and other tips to maximize your home’s sale

Staged homes sell faster and for more money

THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS to remember when prepping a home for sale — among the top two are professional staging and photography, says real estate expert Gary Colin of Keller Williams Realty/Sonoran Living. As one of the top agents in the East Valley, Colin has been working in real estate for nearly 30 years. We chatted with him and other local experts to find out the most upto-date advice on creating a successful listing. Set the stage When prepping to show your home there is one aspect that most experts agree cannot be overlooked: the importance of staging.

Robyn Guinn, professional stager, owner of StageAZ LLC, and the Arizona State President of RESA (Real Estate Staging Association), weighs in on the important topic. “It’s almost easier to explain what staging is not,” she says. “Staging is not interior design: interior design is personalizing a home to your needs and wants, usually with a hefty budget. It is not decorating… decorating is personalizing and customizing the space to your taste. Staging is depersonalize, de-clutter, space planning ideas, color coordinating, and making sense of traffic flow throughout the house. It’s staged to highlight the property or create focal points where they are needed. Staging needs to suit the style of the property, not personal taste.” Guinn continues, noting that staging “needs to show potential colors and furniture arrangement ideas that coordinate with the style of the house. It’s to show or portray a possible lifestyle you could have if you lived there. Statistics say that 90% of the people cannot envision what a vacant house would look like with furnishings in it.” “So does every house need to be staged? Yes,” Guinn affirms. “Staged homes sell faster and for more money. Hire a professional, certified stager to help with the

Professional photos “I believe professional photographers makes a big difference in the marketing of any home, especially upscale homes,” Colin says. Kevin Crosse, president and CEO of Arizona Imaging, makes several points about not only professional staging, but professional photography as well. “In today’s real estate world, exposure is job number one; they say about 93 percent of the buyers start looking for a home online. Knowing that we are a visual society, it makes perfect sense that a listing would have high quality photos and a lot of them,” Crosse says. “This is what buyers want to see; they want to get a feel for the

home before they drive all over town inperson. Just because a cell phone can take a photo does not mean it should. The point is by hiring a professional you know the job will be done right.” Crosse adds that “with our market always changing, your listing must look its best online and in-person. Professional photographers have a variety of tools at their disposal to help them tweak and improve most any shot.” Colin notes that professional photographers can also often coordinate photo shoots from different points of view — an aerial shot for example — and are great at lifestyle based images that attract potential buyers and invoke emotions. “When a photo captures both the home and the lifestyle, buyers and sellers can get a true feeling of the community,” Colin says.

More tips Of course, there’s more to a successful listing than staging and photos. Colin adds extra pointers: • Know why you’re selling your home • Maximize your home’s sales potential • Do your homework before setting your price • Find the right real estate agent to represent your needs • Make it easy for prospects to obtain information • Make sure your agent does their homework, too! Colin notes that there are several real estate apps that both buyers and sellers can refer to.
