from the publisher Publisher
Joe Orr Hello readers! Welcome to another issue of Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine (AZSAL).
Editor
Curt Blakeney As we are in full-blown summer mode, this issue has some hot choices for you to “stay cool” during this long sweltering season. Enjoy some chilled treats and sweets for a nice family day of fun away from the sun. Perhaps a Butterfly Wonderland experience or a stress-free day of fishing at one of Arizona’s many beautiful lakes is what you need. Or just take a weekend trip down to Tucson to stay at one of their awesome resorts. Who doesn’t love to crank the A/C down just a bit lower while on vacation during the summer? I know I do.

Either way, we all try our best to “stay cool” during the summer, so for our cover story, who’s cooler than football legend Kurt Warner, who continues to be a huge presence in our community, even after his long, successful football career. He’s been doing some broadcasting and as always has been 100 percent dedicated to his family and philanthropy. Warner has been coaching his son’s football team, but we’ve been wondering if some coaching on a higher level is in his near future? Also, we are all anxious to see if he is a first-ballot Hall of Famer when he becomes eligible after next football season. Warner shared his thoughts on a few of these topics with us, so you’ll have to read on to find out.

A special shout out to my pops, James ”Jimmy” Orr … thanks for teaching me to make every day, a learning day. Oh, and it just so happens that Kurt Warner is pop’s favorite football player of ALL TIME! Brownie points for Joe! We hope you enjoy this issue ... now keep reading!

THERE’S A NEW DOG MAYOR IN PHOENIX THE POLLS ARE CLOSED and the votes have been “tail-ied." Meet Luca-Loo, Phoenix’s first dog mayor and the winner of DOGTV’s “My Dog for Mayor!” — a 2014 national campaign to elect 100 dog mayors in 100 cities across the U.S. It was a “hairy” competition, but as a result of the American cocker spaniel’s campaign manager’s strong “pup-aganda” skills, she came out on top. A proud rescue pup, Luca wants to educate Phoenix about the power of adoption with her campaign “Live long and adopt!” In addition to being elected dog mayor, Luca-Loo will bark up a storm in her local “paw-litical” scene. “It was a hard-fought campaign for all of our ‘canine-didates,’ many of which were neck-and-neck until the final hours of voting,” said Gilad Neumann, CEO of DOGTV. “We hope that Luca-Loo uses her new dog mayor title to help better her hometown for the good of all dog-kind.”

SUMMER 2014
DEEP IN THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE OF THE VALLEY, the culinary crusaders of V’s Taproom are busy creating cuisine that rebrands the idea that restaurants on golf courses only put out burgers and watered down beer. V’s Tap Room has plenty of burgers, fit for a millionaire even, and over a dozen beers on tap, but it’s the variety and quality of familiar fare that sets them apart. When General Manager Mark Nelson teamed up with Food and Beverage Director Steve Rosa, he had a very specific goal in mind: to consolidate the six menu selection into one mind-blowing taste tantalizing menu that appealed to golfers and caddies alike. “First we looked at the product lists to see what was selling,” Nelson said during a cozy sit-down visit to V’s. “We narrowed it down from there and then ran quite a bit of testing. We ran about three different menu tests on the locals here and took their feedback.” When you enter the open-air dining room at V’s and enjoy a side of Tempura Brussels Sprouts with your Millionaire Burger you know that you are not tasting some corporate creation of statistics and number crunching, but a genuine product derived from the people themselves and backed by a crack team of foodies with more than fifty years of experience in the industry.
As the warm desert breezes rise and fall about the hills and fairways of the Trilogy Golf Club, diners can enjoy temperate climates at the indoor/outdoor wraparound bar that opens up to the immense patio, V’s inviting dining room, or they can enjoy watching the pizza artisans work in the open brick kitchen on display near the end of the restaurant. After a $300,000 makeover at the beginning of this year, V’s Taproom’s open-air concept is perfect for this time of year. The ambiance is hip and trendy with butcher-block style mesquite table tops. While the quaint community of Vistancia and residents of the northwest Valley are V’s primary patrons, food lovers the Valley over must make the trip up the 303 to truly appreciate “customer created” food. It is the perfect pit stop for Lake Pleasant travelers as well. V’s high quality menu features fresh, locally sourced ingredients all prepped in house. The only items brought in are the desserts. “The best selling dish is the Millionaire Burger followed by the fish and chips.” That’s right. V’s has the audacity, nay the courage, to give their burger a million dollar moniker. This puppy lives up to the expectations. It is a tender, wellseasoned patty made to order, garnished with crisp veggies, and nestled between a toasted, buttery melt-in-your-mouth bun

some twists of their own. The dish is made up of two generous pieces of mahi-mahi coated with a homemade tempura batter. This lowers the greasiness factor that traditionally haunts the meal. The tempura fries quicker and cleaner and the mahi-mahi, cooked just right, is flakier and more flavorful than cod — the usual suspect in fish & chips.

that ignites a chain reaction of flavor. The house-made aioli, armed with some secret ingredients, is lightly spread on the burger. It’s creamy with a hint of cumin and adds a blast of burger goodness with every bite. If you think you know fish & chips, thanks to all the “gastropubs” popping up, you don’t. V’s takes a step back from the traditional English style and throws in
If Americana or Brit bites aren’t your thing, V’s can still take care of you. Other excellent entrées on their stellar menu are the lean and robust Delmonico Steak, the Tagliatelle Bolognese or Shrimp & Angel Hair Pasta featuring V’s house made pasta, and of course there are the amazing artisan wood-fired pizzas. “Our chef used to work at Pizzeria Bianco. People who try our pizza [recognize] the taste.” Among the inspiring pies are the Spicy Italian, loaded with prosciutto, salami, capicola, pepperoni, and Italian sausage — mama mia! V’s starters are excellent in variety and taste. One of the top-selling and most unlikely gems at V’s are the crispy tempura battered Brussels sprouts. When dunked in some Taproom sauce, these bad boys will even have toddlers asking for more. Don’t miss out on the hot wings, either. Spun in a traditional dry rub packed with cayenne chili zing, they will disappear faster than free coffee in a teachers lounge. It is no easy task in the restaurant business to create high-end service in a casual relaxed atmosphere. V’s Taproom does it exceedingly well. Distance is relative when you are talking about food that tastes this good. The trip to V’s Taproom pays for itself.

FIVE SEASONS
OFF THE FIELD KURT WARNER takes time to reflect on his amazing NFL career and what's in store for him next THERE ARE ONLY A FEW STANDOUT STARS IN THE 26 YEARS THE ARIZONA CARDINALS HAVE CALLED THE VALLEY HOME. Topping that list is legendary quarterback and former team leader, Kurt Warner. He stole Arizona’s heart on the road to Super Bowl XLIII (which, despite losing, is still the first and only championship game the franchise has seen). Now, four years after he hung up his #13 jersey — and with it, his NFL career — Warner shares his thoughts on the league, his future in football, and how he’s still taking care of Arizona’s heart. FUTURE OF HALL OF FAMER The next NFL season will mark the fifth anniversary of Kurt Warner’s retirement, a particularly significant milestone, as it will be the first season he is qualified for acceptance to the NFL Hall of Fame. While this is an exciting opportunity for any former professional football player, and especially fitting for one whose rag-to-riches backstory is as well-known as his record on the field, Warner approaches the topic with the humble class you might expect from the values-based, family man — the charm of a true American sports hero that is becoming more difficult to come by in today’s franchises. “It’s a dream of all players to be recognized and put on that gold jacket. It would be incredibly humbling and exciting to be put in that class of great players,” admitted Warner. “But my résumé is so different. It’s hard to evaluate were I fit in the history of the game.” Well he certainly has a spot in Arizona’s history, leading Cardinals to their sole Super Bowl appearance in the 2008 post-season. And while that’s incentive enough for a championship-deprived town like Phoenix, Warner’s narrative resonates beyond that of our underdog mentality. His is what Hollywood sports biopics are made of, and he is often revered as the greatest undrafted player ever in the NFL. His career outlook was grim after being released from the Green Bay Packers’ training camp in 1994, without ever getting an opportunity to take the field as a cheese head. The next five years were spent stocking shelves at a grocery store, with a notable stint in the Arena Football League, before opportunity knocked once again. In 1998 he was signed to the St. Louis Rams at the age of 28, significantly older than his fellow rookies. The 12 seasons that followed Warner’s debut with the Rams included three trips to the Super Bowl and one championship win, making him a household name. He spent his last five seasons as an Arizona Cardinal. “(My story) is not how I dreamed it would be, and not how I would have wanted it to go, at least in the early stages,” said Warner, reflecting on his whirlwind career. “Twenty years ago I would have written it different, but I’m glad it was written this way. I have a story that no one else has.” His history is one for the storybooks, but his career also boasts Hall of Fame worthy statistics.
KurtWarner_MagSeven 5/28/14 6:13 AM Page 4
AZSAL Already a member of the Arena Football Hall of Fame, Warner’s records include being a two-time MVP and a Super Bowl MVP, one of the fastest players to reach 30,000 passing yards and a leader in all-time career touchdown passes in the post-season. Many fans are hoping he extends his influence on the sport with a future career in coaching. Warner, on the other hand, isn’t so sure that’s in his near future. “I would love to coach — it would be great to share my knowledge and experience,” said Warner. Alas, with seven kids, a large and proactive philanthropic role in the community, and other NFL projects consuming his schedule, his sharing of knowledge and experience is exclusively reserved for coaching his sons’ teams. “I’m not willing to sacrifice the time it takes (to coach) on a higher level. At least not now.” STILL IN THE GAME While professional or collegiate coaching may not be in Warner’s near future, he still very much involved with the league since last suiting up as a player. Now he dons a different type of suit come kickoff, one complete with tie. An NFL Network broadcast analyst, Warner regularly appears on the Sunday pregame show NFL GameDay Morning and contributes to NFL Total Access and Thursday Night Kickoff.

The league has certainly given him a lot to analyze, namely the steady increase of stricter hitting guidelines established to make the game safer for the players, especially quarterbacks. Many fans feel that these rules compromise the integrity of a game that is notorious for aggressive full contact. “They’re doing a good job. Players are the greatest commodity of the NFL and the new rules are protecting the players for the long haul,” said Warner. The long-term risks of concussions include chronic headaches, depression and even brain damage. The NFL recently paid out multi-millions of dollars to former players suffering from past head injuries, which put the pressure on to tighten its rules. Warner doesn’t feel these new regulations would have affected the length of his career in the NFL had they been implemented in his time. He believes the current rules would have benefitted his overall career stats in terms of scoring and pass completion. “I think I probably would have had thrown a few more touchdowns, but wouldn’t have affected my longevity,” said Warner. That hypothetical, we'll never know. What we do know is a vicious hit by Saints defensive end Bobby McCray knocked Warner out of a 2009 playoff game against New Orleans. Turns out that game was Warner's last ... he retired two weeks later. And with his retirement ended the Cardinals improbable run of success. ▲

SUMMER 2014
To add insult to injury, it was discovered in 2012 that the Saints had placed a player-funded bounty on Warner, in which substantial hits on the quarterback earned monetary rewards. Still, Warner maintains that the hit did not end his career, and that it was clean by league rules of the time. Even so, Warner is sure to feel the effects of the new rules, at least from an analyst’s perspective, come opening day this fall. HEART OF A CHAMPION Despite the concussion and other various injuries Warner suffered in his career, he managed to emerge from the NFL with minimal collateral damage to his physical wellbeing. Now in his early 40s, he is actually healthier than he was at the height of his athletic career, thanks in part to a new partnership with Kowa Pharmaceuticals America, Inc. Together they launched the First and Goal initiative to promote smart cholesterol management, a concern very dear to his heart. Back when Warner’s career was starting to rise, so was his cholesterol. He was diagnosed with high cholesterol nearly a decade ago. For someone who was a professional athlete and whose job it was to be a top physical performer, he met the news with shock. “I was the model of health,” said Warner, understandably confused. “I thought: ‘I’m too young! Too in shape!’ But you can’t see it when you look in the mirror.”
KurtWarner_MagSeven 5/28/14 6:13 AM Page 7
“I didn’t want the damage to be done,” he said. “Seven kids to think of. I want to live a long life and as healthy as possible for them.” GIVING BACK The 2014 NFL season still a few months off, Warner is looking forward to spending time with his family and staying busy with his and his wife Brenda’s charity, First Things First, which supports various charitable Valley initiatives. Every summer the foundation sends dozens of terminally ill children to Disney World, with Kurt, Brenda and all the Warner siblings as their hosts. They are also looking forward to First Things First’s newest endeavor to build a supportive living community for adults with mental health and development problems, which is inspired by his eldest son who suffered brain injuries as an infant. The development is projected to be completed in 2015. We want to create a community for these adults to grow and thrive. It’s important for families like ours to be able to gain access to something like that.” It’s this passion for his community — from football fans to helping others — that drives Warner and will keep him in Arizona’s hearts for years to come. ▲
Uncontrolled, high cholesterol levels lead to heart disease, the number one killer of both men and women in the U.S. While major contributors include a poor diet and lack of exercise, lifestyle choices are only a part of the cholesterol equation. For Warner, his predisposition for blocked arteries is inherited. He recalls his father’s own struggles with cholesterol, but believed he wouldn’t suffer the same fate. His father wasn’t an athlete; he didn’t have world-class personal trainers to keep his health in check. “That was key for me, realizing that being in shape and eating well is not all there is.” His diet and exercise regime in check, Warner decided to tackle his cholesterol head on. His doctor as his coach, they discussed a three-part plan of action. Just like a playbook wouldn’t work for all teams, combinations of diet, exercise and medication don’t work for all individuals, so Warner and his doctor took different approaches. He experimented with different statins until he found one that worked, and today his heart health is under control with LIVALO. Warner was lucky to learn of his high cholesterol at a young age, because many people don’t think it is something to worry about until middle age. Early testing is something Warner and First and Goal hope to promote.

Arizona’s offseason acquisition of slugger Mark Trumbo has the Diamondbacks looking to turn up the heat this summer

POWER THE NATIONAL LEAGUE WEST HAS QUICKLY AND NOT SO QUIETLY BECOME MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL’S TOUGHEST AND MOST CONTENTIOUS DIVISION. Despite sitting atop the division for 81 days last summer, the Arizona Diamondbacks watched helplessly as the Los Angeles Dodgers raced past them in the second half of the season, forcing General Manager Kevin Towers to aggressively re-tool the roster during the offseason. Towers made headlines at the baseball winter meetings in December when he announced that the Diamondbacks had acquired 28-year-old power-hitter Mark Trumbo to pair with 2013 MVP runner-up Paul Goldschmidt in a trade for rookie left-hander Tyler Skaggs. After stockpiling as many young pitching assets as possible, the message from Towers and the Diamondback organization was loud and clear — it’s time to win in Arizona. Trumbo starred at Villa Park High School just outside Anaheim, Calif., where as a pitcher he earned All-American honors in 2004. Afterwards, he originally committed to play at the University of Southern California before being selected in the 18th round of the 2004 MLB draft by none other than his favorite childhood team, the Anaheim Angels. “My draft situation was pretty unique,” he said. “A lot of teams thought my commitment to go to USC was too strong for them to risk taking me so I fell in the draft to the 18th round. It was my hometown team, the Angels, who finally selected me and they said, 'We understand where you're at and we're very interested in you. We're going to watch you play throughout the summer,' and that's what ended up happening. “We came to a deal right before school was going to start, but I ended up failing my physical as a pitcher. So at that point I had to do a couple more workouts, but we still came to the same agreement as a hitter." Trumbo started out as a member of the Orem Owlz, the rookie affiliate of the Angels, where he slowly began to transform himself from being a pitcher to an infielder and eventually into an outfielder in hopes of one day fulfilling his dream of making it to the big leagues. “I didn't really have a natural position,” he recalled. “I started out at third and then moved to first and played first base for a long time. I always thought, the more positions I could play, the better chance I had to move up. “Around 2009, I suggested maybe I could take some reps in the outfield. They were a little hesitant at first, but I got an opportunity to go out there a little bit and slowly worked on it and now I'm playing left field here."

In total, Trumbo spent the better part of six seasons bouncing around the minor leagues, from Orem to Cedar Rapids and even North Little Rock all the while with his eyes set on returning back home to Anaheim. “You're in places that are a little foreign to you and there's not much luxury going on, but then again, that's what you signed up for,” he said. “That's kind of what I always kept in the back of my mind, and I just always had the mindset to put in the time to get to where I wanted to be. “I never lost sight of wanting to be a big league player and that's kind of what helped me along the way." Finally, in 2010, Trumbo received the call he’d been waiting to hear, joining the Angels as a September call-up during the roster expansions. He made his major league debut on September 11, 2010, pinching-hitting for first baseman Mike Napoli. While the end result wasn’t what he hoped for, it marked the end of one journey for Trumbo and the start of another. "I actually didn't play for quite a while after being called up,” he said. “I was on the roster but didn't getting any opportunities. I finally got the first at-bat out of the way. It wasn't anything I was looking for. I struck-out, along with one of my best buddies who's one of the catchers for the Angels.
• Trumbo was drafted in the 18th round (533rd overall) of the 2004 MLB Draft. • Made his MLB debut on 9.10.11 as a pinch-hitter. • Hit first career home run on 4.12.12. • Traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks on 12.10.13. • Hit his 100th career home run 4.6.14.

and complement Goldschmidt, sending Skaggs, one of the organization’s top pitching prospects, to Los Angeles in exchange for Trumbo in a three-team deal last December. “I was excited,” said Trumbo about the trade. “You want to go where you're wanted, and I saw that the Diamondbacks made a strong commitment to bring me over here. That pumped me up. I was just excited to get to put on a new uniform and play hard for someone else." With the 6’ 4”, 235 pound, right-handed hitter in the lineup batting behind Goldschmidt and the suddenly surging Martin Prado, Arizona looks to improve on its 4.23 runs per game average last season, which ranked 14th in the league. "It's tremendously deep,” said Trumbo of the team’s make-up. “We've got a really good mix of guys. The way it's constructed, it's a lineup I think pitchers don't necessarily look forward to pitching against and I think that's exactly what you want.” The Diamondbacks’ and their rival Dodgers opened up the MLB season down under in Sydney, Australia this year, giving fans an early glimpse of the team’s new left fielder. Trumbo quickly demonstrated his power, homering in the team’s second outing of the season. He also set a club-record, homering in four consecutive games during the opening week, including hitting his 100th career home run on April 6th in Arizona’s 5-3 win over Colorado. Unfortunately, in late April Trumbo suffered a stress fracture in his foot that sidetracked his promising start. And with it, any hopes of a D-backs offensive resurgence. A mid-June return looks likely for Trumbo. While the team continues to position itself for the long haul, it’s become apparent that Trumbo is ready to flex his muscles in the desert this summer. “We're going to get to where we need to be," Trumbo said. "There's no doubt about it. We started out a little slower than we wanted, but I think everyone in here knows how to win and expects to win and that's our mindset." ▲
“But you're still up there. It was pretty surreal. I was pretty nervous, obviously." Trumbo became the Angels’ starting first baseman the following season, where he’d go on to hit 29 home runs and drive in 87 RBI while finishing second to Tampa Bay’s Jeremy Hellickson for the American League Rookie of the Year honors in 2011. However, just as Trumbo began to feel at ease with his role on the team, the Angels signed free agent first baseman Albert Pujols to a 10 year, $240 million contract, forcing him to once again adapt on the go. "I understood that I'd be on the move again, so it was just, 'Where do I go next?'” said Trumbo. “I try not to process things too much and just keep moving. They said, 'We're going to try you at third, the DH spot, first, and just sprinkle you around and be the utility type.'” “I gave third base a shot for a while but wasn't very good over there and ended up getting quite a bit of time in the outfield.” Trumbo moved to left field and responded with a careerbest .268 batting average while belting 32 home runs to go along with 95 RBI, earning him a spot in the 2012 MLB All Star game. He continued his ascension as one of the league’s premiere power hitters the following season, posting career highs in both home runs (34) and RBI (100) while starring in one of baseball’s most feared lineups, alongside Pujols, Mike Trout and Josh Hamilton. But just as he has been his whole career, Trumbo was soon on the move again. Back in Arizona, the Diamondback’s second half tailspin was marked by the team’s inability to produce offensively down the stretch. Aside from Goldschmidt, who hit .302 with 36 home runs and 125 RBI, no other Diamondback hit more than 14 home runs all season. Towers wasted very little time finding a bat to both protect

GONE FISHIN’ By Lee Allen PHOTOS BY LEE ALLEN/ARIZONA FREELANCE
Arizona boasts several fantastic fishing spots FISHING IS BIG BUSINESS in this country with 60 million anglers making a $115 billion impact on the nation’s economy, a fair share of which involves Arizona. From cruising Colorado River waters to babbling brooks in the White Mountains and small lakes just a tortilla toss away from the Mexican border, Arizona anglers have an olio of options. The danger in singling out hot spots is that other fishing holes don’t get the attention they deserve; that’s a shame because the state’s 85 species of fish inhabit more than 300 coldwater streams and 100-plus lakes and reservoirs. Picking a favorite location is a subjective endeavor that requires slighting one good location over another.
Tiny Rose Canyon Lake near the top of Mount Lemmon provides a cool summertime getaway. BELOW: Houseboating Lake Powell provides a new dimension to the art of angling — from fresh water to fillet to frying pan.
LAKE POWELL That said, if bigger is better, then Lake Powell and Lake Mead take the lead. At maximum water capacity, Lake Mead would be the largest reservoir in the U.S. with over 750 miles of shoreline. Not much of a chance of that happening this year, however, because due to lingering drought, the lake has not reached maximum levels in 30 years. Despite its dwindling depth, there’s still a lot of water there to hide a lot of fish. Commenting on lower lake levels, the late Steve Ward of Lake Powell Resort used to say, “When you deal with nature, patience is a virtue because you don’t refill a bucket this large overnight.” Powell has more shoreline than any other man-made lake in the country (186 fishable miles). It’s a clear, deep canyon lake with little structure, just cliff walls that provide casting spots in cracks, corners, rock rubble, or sometimes just a patch of shade. Striped bass guard coves waiting for shad baitfish to flee, so finding one of these box canyons is like having a

• The oldest fishhook ever found dates back to about 42,000 years ago. • Sharks kill 12 people per year, while people kill 11,417 sharks per hour. • Lake Superior is the world’s largest freshwater lake. It is 20,364,800 acres in area. • Next to tuna, salmon is the most consumed fish in the United States. private fishing hole. Fisheries biologist Wayne Gustaveson advises, “Even with lower water levels, the striper population is awesome … as good as it gets at Powell.” LAKE HAVASU A little over a decade ago, the busiest recreational reservoir in the Southwest, Lake Havasu, was brought back to life in the largest and most comprehensive freshwater recreational fishing project ever attempted in the U.S. — there were $32 million in major habitat improvements and greater lake access. Former Interior Department Secretary Gale Norton prophetically referred to the project as “a springboard of better things to come.” And things have now improved to the point of tackle-busting striped bass, largemouth that will break both your line and your heart when they toss a hook and smallmouth bronze bullets that are setting new records inhabiting the lake. SALT RIVER PROJECT LAKES Arizona’s Salt River Project supplies a chain of pools that keep anglers coming back. The lead lake and the largest is Roosevelt, a highly productive, top-end reservoir that supports a large fish population. Whatever water is not retained by Roosevelt Dam flows into a 17-mile-long ribbon of recreational opportunity known as Apache Lake. Surrounded by the Superstition Wilderness and the Three Bar Wildlife Area, it not only offers productive angling, but its secluded covers harbor big horn sheep, deer, javelina, and a host of desert wildlife. Bass tournament pro angler John Murray says, “Bass are always willing to bite in these waters and if you can’t catch bass here, you’re not trying hard enough.” Apache is a dependable spot for stripers and smallmouth. “In addition to being known as a smallmouth bass lake, Apache also supports a world-class yellow bass fishery,” says Ty Gray of the Arizona Game & Fish Department. Fish one, fish them all, and while a majority of boats head to Rosey and Apache, hawg hunters continue to haunt Canyon Lake, the possible home of the heaviest largemouth bass in the state. Retired Game & Fish biologist Jim Warnecke believes Canyon could be a new smallmouth destination because of the fishing in the main channel and rock piles. Saguaro Lake is another option, a unique big bass fishery that also produces channel cats and walleye. BARTLETT LAKE Another hot spot close to Phoenix is Bartlett Lake, which can provide a suppertime option of crappie, catfish or largemouth bass. This favorite fishery on the East Verde River gets hammered by anglers and boaters, but still gives up something for the frying pan at suppertime. There are hundreds of "fishy" nooks and coves that border both shorelines and offer everything from shallow flats to steep drop-offs — enough different structure types to please most fishermen because almost every square foot is capable of producing a stringer full of fish. WHITE MOUNTAIN LAKES AND STREAMS Lowland lakes lose a lot of angling pressure once the thermometer hits triple digits as anglers head for the high country. If the White Mountains are your destination, you’ll find over 50 lakes and more than a couple dozen streams. On White Mountain Apache lands, the 900-acre Sunrise Lake has given up a nearly 5-pound brook trout while Reservation Lake came close to a 23-pound brown trout. LEFT: Just one of the scenic, and often trout-filled, streams in White Mountain high country.

“Reservation is one of the top spots to wet a worm for big browns,” says tribal fisheries biologist Tim Gatewood. “Another favorite of area anglers is Hawley Lake, easy to get to with lots of shore access (nearly 10 miles surrounded by thick stands of pines). Approximately 125,000 native Apache trout are stocked in reservation streams and lakes annually with another million maturing eggs reared for stocking on Forest Service and non-tribal lands. The primary streams that receive Apache stockings are the East and North forks of the White River. According to the folks at the Fish and Wildlife Service’s Alchesay-Williams Creek Hatchery, “This native trout still thinks like a wild fish and eats bugs — so fly fishermen, both wet and dry, do well.” The North Fork of the White River south of the hatchery gives up some 25 miles of fishable waters.
SOUTHERN ARIZONA WEEKEND WANDERING Because of a paucity of ponds, Southern Arizona sometimes gets overlooked, but four favorite fishing holes are situated close enough to each other to invite a visit to all four in a single weekend. The quartet of some 500 total surface acres have yielded inland fishing records for bluegill, as well as green and redear sunfish. If the boss is out of town and you can leave early on Friday afternoon, head to “The Hawg Pen,” tiny Arivaca Lake where bass in the 8-to-10-pound category and large channel cats await. Grab some shut-eye under the stars and allow time for an early morning topwater bite before heading further south down Ruby Road to Pena Blanca Lake, named for the twin peaks that dominate the skyline. This water hole ran afoul with environmental problems a few years back, but has been cleaned up and two new floating fishing platforms have been added to provide access to a healthy rainbow trout population. When the action slows, stow the gear and head for Southern Arizona’s only entry into the big league, Patagonia Lake, 265-surface acres with 11 miles of recreational shoreline, fed year-round by Sonoita Creek. Because Patagonia Lake State Park offers developed campsites and showers, you might elect to stay the night before a morning run to Parker Canyon Lake. This 133-surface-acre blue magnet entices cactus-country anglers who put up with several miles of (sometimes) graded gravel road to the launch area. When an aggressive bass smacks your surface lure, the bumpy ride to the lake is instantly forgotten. By the end of this trip, you will see that Arizona is more than the picturesque deserts and mountains it is known for. Its multitude of fishing holes make it an angler’s dream. Next trip, consider reversing the order of the lakes — the fish may not see you coming. ▲

Gold Mine Off Interstate 17 peeks a sleepy western town, surrounded by cacti and wildflowers, called Black Canyon City By Stacey Lane
BEYOND THE GLOW OF THE CITY LIGHTS, nestled in the foothills of the Bradshaw Mountains in the Sonoran Desert’s Black Canyon region, a small city with rugged and majestic scenery captures the spirit of the Wild West. With an approximate population of 3,000 people, Black Canyon City is just 45 minutes north of Phoenix, encompasses 10 square miles and is home to many gems. The Black Canyon, named after the color of the basalt in the surrounding rock, is filled with surprises and one might say, a real gold mine. Many modern day prospectors still find gold here today. At approximately 2,000 feet above sea level, winters are ideal while the summers warm up, but cool off when the colorful sunsets come out to play. In the late 1800s, miners carried their pioneering spirit to this lush part of the Agua Fria River, along with soldiers, herders, ranchers and adventurers. Originally known as Canon, its name has changed a few times over the last hundred years as its history took shape. In its early days, it was also called Canon and simply Black Canyon. The word "City" was added in 1965 and Black Canyon City remains its official name. Interestingly enough, it is not officially designated as a city or a town, which is a testament to the fact that folks in Black Canyon have a hankering for doing things in a unique fashion. Gold is considered a main reason for the community’s existence. Black Canyon became a mining hamlet around 1857 when placer gold was found in the Black Canyon and Agua Fria Rivers. Amongst the colorful characters that have been drawn to Black Canyon City was a clever miner,

In 1867, his company began to clear the ditches, and this in effect, began the founding of Phoenix. He eventually sold his interest, and began a mining career in the Bradshaw Mountains in 1873. Credos from the Road As I was riding home after leaving my daughter and grandbabies at the nearby Rock Springs Café, I spotted an unusual western fence and pulled over and contemplated the next cover photo for my Facebook page. The clear, blue sky framing the wrought iron would make for a perfect backdrop. I pulled up to the house and saw a couple of people out front working on the yard, so I drove to the other side of the property in order to get a clear shot. As I was snapping photos, a gentleman came to the fence and slowly opened it. We discussed the fence décor and his property, and I told him what a great Facebook cover I thought this would make. A slow smile came to his face. He put out his hand and introduced himself as Sonny. I had further inquiries about his property, so he invited me to see more. Just before we passed the gate he turned to me and said, “One thing I would like you to know before you come in is that I am a part of the Hell's Angels. Is this a problem for you?” he asked. I replied earnestly, “Oh no, my roommates have motorcycles.” He spoke about the horses and stable as we walked into a small building that housed books, movies and motorcycles.

Barger told me that he liked to write, and then I saw the book that Ralph “Sonny” Barger authored: Hell's Angel — The Life and Times of Sonny Barger and the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club. Barger has a very patriotic sense of freedom; his American way of life requires a neverending devotion to the “idea of” and the “practice of” freedom. He contributes both directly and indirectly and has brought a lot to Black Canyon City, to include the filming of Dead in 5 Heartbeats, which was filmed using the city’s restaurants, bars and local scenery. Barger wanted to make a film that was authentic to the motorcyclist’s lifestyle and based the film on the novel Dead in 5 Heartbeats, written by Barger with Keith and Kent Zimmerman. Barger produced the film with independent filmmaker Jeff Santo, and shot it in just 24 days. Santo was a perfect candidate to capture brotherhood because he understood the importance of honor, loyalty and dedication. With more than 200 actual motorcycle riders participating in the making, the film is a unique blend of reality and fiction. Filmed in real clubhouses, it provides an authentic bird’s-eye view of the happenings inside a biker’s world. Being a teacher, I enjoyed learning, especially about a culture I didn’t know much about. The film demonstrates a meaning of brotherhood that was originally foreign to me, that I can now carry with me. To learn more, visit www.sonnybarger.com and www.deadin5heartbeats.com.

COLD TREATS FOR By Susan Lanier-Graham
Hot Months On a blazing summer night, nothing beats a scoop of ice cream at these fine Valley establishments HOT SUMMER DAYS in Phoenix beg for cold, creamy, dripping-down-the-sides-of-a-cone ice cream. Just stepping into an ice cream shop can set your taste buds off, dancing in anticipation. perhaps it's the smell of the cone, the chilly air, or the pretty colors, but ice cream seems to bring out the child in each of us. During the hot summer days, head to one of these ice cream shops for some yummy, cool treats — no extra charge for the calories, of course.
WIMPY’S PARADISE 48 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler 480.821.3197 • Facebook.com/Wimpysparadise Wimpy’s Paradise is one of the new hot spots in downtown Chandler and the perfect place to get a cool cone of ice cream, a hot fudge sundae or maybe a malt. Owner Randy Walters, who owned now-closed Pittsburgh Willy’s Gourmet Hot Dogs, opened Wimpy’s Paradise in February of this year in honor of his father. Mr. Walters would be proud. The Thrifty ice cream served at Wimpy’s is topped with an assortment of homemade toppings. The hot fudge is creamy and oh-so-chocolately. There is also a buttermilk caramel sauce to die for. The vanilla malts have just the right mixture of ice cream and malt. Of course, if you arrive at Wimpy’s with a big appetite, you can order a burger or one of the famous Pittsburgh Willy’s Gourmet Hot Dogs. What’s better than a hot dog, vanilla malt and a sundae?

What’s the difference? Ice cream? Sorbet? Gelato? Custard? Yogurt? Before heading off to the local ice cream parlor, it’s important to know what you want—and what to expect.
• ICE CREAM is frozen milk and cream that can contain fruits, flavorings and sugar. Ice cream is mixed and then stirred slowly while it cools to eliminate the formation of large ice crystals. The resulting product is a smooth texture with rich flavor. • FROZEN CUSTARD is a dense Coney Island dessert creation from 1919, created by adding egg yolks to ice cream. This makes for a colder and smoother ice cream. • FROZEN YOGURT (or frozen yoghurt) is a frozen treat made from yogurt and milk — not cream. It is a tart treat and lower in fat than regular ice cream. Frozen yogurt may or may not contain live and active bacteria cultures, because the FDA doesn’t regulate the frozen yogurt industry. • SORBET, is made with puréed fruits, sugar, and water, while sherbet may contain dairy. The frozen treat doesn’t have air whipped in, creating a denser product. Also similar is Italian ice, which is more grainy and icy. • GELATO is Italian for ice cream and dates back to ancient Rome. It has a richer taste than American ice cream. Gelato varies widely, especially when recreated in the U.S. It usually has 16 to 24% sugar (compared to 12 to 16% sugar in ice cream). There is a stabilizer, such as egg yolks and non-fat milk solids. A bit stricter than in the U.S., Italy requires gelato to have least 3.5% butterfat, with no upper limit.

... an indoor rainforest environment featuring the largest butterfly pavilion in America.
BUTTERFLY WONDERLAND, located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, is touted as an indoor rainforest environment featuring the largest butterfly pavilion in America. This summer, the distinctive attraction is celebrating its first anniversary. I’ve been there a handful of times over the past year and believe that it’s a definite must-see for locals and tourists alike. Once you arrive at Butterfly Wonderland, which is easy to spot given the big butterfly
outside and large atrium, you’re ushered into the on-site theater to experience Flight of the Butterflies in 3D. The movie is a great way to start the experience and is a favorite among kids. From there, you go to the Butterfly Emergence Gallery, where you’ll see real life examples of butterflies in all their stages of development. The highlight of the experience is the 10,000 square foot atrium that holds thousands of butterflies from all across the world. It’s a rainforest-like environment, so be prepared to sweat, but it’s completely worth it. One of the highlights of our visit in the atrium was the friendly staff — one member, in particular, used a sugar stick to attract a butterfly, so my son could see a butterfly close up. Throughout the exhibit, kids are encouraged to ask questions and rewarded with a special sticker or small favor for doing so. In addition to the fluttering butterflies (which freely land on you) there is a waterfall and large Koi pond, another favorite among kids. Once you experience the atrium, you can see a live ant colony and large beehive. Don’t worry — everything is enclosed by glass. Also, the Rivers of the Amazon Aquatic Life exhibit, features freshwater

Beat The Heat With A Good Laugh Jill Bryan’s Scrumdiddlyumptious is too good to miss
▲ ▲ ▲
AZSAL FAST FACTS • Bryan got her start in comedy almost a decade ago. “My husband took me to a comedy show and said that he thought I would be good at it. I disagreed. A few months later, I decided to give it a shot and was hooked.” • “In my head I see heads as a positive and tails as a negative. It’s just one of those weird things,” Bryan explained to me when I asked her which side she always chooses in a coin toss. • The word “Scrumdiddlyumptious” was coined by the late great Roald Dahl in his book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." • Jill Bryan was part of the Comedy Squadron, an elite team of comics that performed for U.S. military troops last year. “It was me and four guys, and we went to Germany, Belgium, and England. It was just fantastic.” • Jill impressively lost almost 100 pounds over the course of shooting her show.
WHILE THE ARIZONA HEAT IS NO LAUGHING MATTER, there is plenty of funny hiding within the cooler interstices of The Valley. Resident comedian Jill Bryan is one of the desert’s jewels. When the temperature rises, especially when it’s over one hundred degrees at night, what better way is there

WHEN I WAS HANDED THE KEYS to the new 2015 Volvo XC60 T6 Drive E Crossover SUV, I was pumped. For two reasons: this was the magazine’s first-ever review of a vehicle by the legendary Swedish automaker, and it was a 2015 model year, our first of the season after a long run of 2014s. The XC60 is part of Volvo’s all-new Drive-E program that includes a host of technologies for efficiency and eco-friendliness. In 2014, the XC60 got an interior and exterior makeover, which was largely carried over to 2015 with only a few minor changes. One can view the XC60 as the natural evolution of the boxy Volvo wagons of the 70s and 80s. The styling of the XC60 is distinctly Scandinavian, though much more refined, aerodynamic, and less boxy than Volvos in the past. I actually like the bold look: the hood and fenders, paired with a wide grille and LED daytime running lights, form a prominent face. Muscular curves flow through the body to the integrated exhaust.
SUMMER 2014
And as you’d except from its Volvo DNA, it’s fully loaded with award-winning and cutting-edge safety features. The The five-seater XC60 T6 Drive-E comes in three trim levels: base, Premier Plus and Platinum. We test drove the Platinum edition. UNDER THE HOOD: This is where the new Volvo really impresses. The front-wheel drive XC60 T6 featured a supercharged and turbocharged 2-liter, 4-cylinder engine. The engine cranks out 302 horsepower, a huge number for such a small displacement. The belt-driven supercharger offers a boost in low-rev ranges then transitions to a turbocharger in high-rev ranges, a combination that greatly reduces “turbo lag.” The system delivers impressive fuel efficiency and enough punch to accelerate confidently on freeways. Volvo’s start-stop system is a technology generally found in hybrid cars. At a stoplight, the engine will shut down while the brake pedal is depressed, and as soon

and the leather steering wheel are tasteful and classy. The floating center stack is a thing of beauty with a masterful layout and elegant simplicity. The climate controls are ridiculously intuitive: on the stylized diagram of a person, just push on the body part you want to heat or cool. A high-resolution seven-inch touchscreen controls the infotainment system, including info and images from the navigation system, phone, satellite radio, reversing camera, and so on. The instrument cluster features an active TFT crystal display for various gauges and information — all of which are customizable. The display will show the posted speed limit — a cool feature so you don’t have to crane your neck looking for speed-limit signs. The rear cargo area is quite roomy (67.4 cu.ft.) with a hidden storage compartment under the carpeted deck.

Luxury’s New Leader The redesigned 2014 Acura MDX arrives with bolder styling, more interior room and better fuel economy to take on a crowded luxury crossover SUV market
Price as tested: $57,400 Engine: 3.5-liter, 24-valve V6 Output: 290 horsepower and 267 lb.-ft. torque Transmission: 6-speed automatic 0-60: 6.4 seconds MPG: 18 city/27 hwy

UNDER THE HOOD: The MDX is powered by a 290-horsepower, 3.5liter V6 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, though upgrading to Acura's Super Handling All Wheel Drive system is well worth the price, especially when driving in inclement weather. Though the MDX weighs more than 4,000 pounds, the drive train powers it well. Acceleration is brisk and the suspension easily handles a variety of highway and city driving conditions. The ride is remarkably nimble and handling is sharp.
SUMMER 2014
ON THE INSIDE: As you’d expect from a high-end Honda, the cabin looks modern and first-class, with plenty of leather appointments, crisp metallic surfaces, understated wood inserts on the dash and doors, padded materials and soft-touch buttons. The dashboard is well laid out and most controls are user-friendly. The infotainment system in the center stack is handled by two screens — the learning curve diminished by actually reading the owner’s manual. Standard features include tri-zone dual-mode automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, rear backup camera and a power-operated tailgate The test vehicle was loaded to the hilt with the Tech Package, Advance Package and Entertainment Package, which added an Acura Navigation system, 10-speaker premium sound system, DVD player, extrawide rear 16.2-inch screen and a host of other luxury and tech features. The MDX can comfortably accommodate seven people. Both the middle and rear seats fold flat, and one-touch third-row access makes it easy for kids to climb in the back. Cargo space is modest: 15 cu. ft. with the third row seats up; 68.4 cu. ft. with both second and third row seats folded down. ▲
VITAL STATS
THE LUXURY CROSSOVER SUV market is ultracompetitive, so Japanese carmakers are always looking to get a leg up on the competition. Acura, Honda’s luxury badge, introduced a re-designed MDX for 2014, making it lighter, safer and more fuel efficient. It also got an exterior makeover, with bolder styling and smoother lines. Most Importantly, designers shed the Honda Odyssey minivan platform, and opted instead for a dedicated platform, which allows the 2014 MDX to grow by 2 inches in length and 2.7 inches in wheelbase. Bottom line: the 2014 MDX is a spacious, techsavvy SUV that delivers exceptional ride and handling for a three-row crossover.

2014 TOYOTA TUNDRA 4X4 LTD CREWMAX 5.7L V-8
I‘ve always been a big fan of Nissan, and this tough offroad pickup truck really delivers. The Frontier has rugged good looks, but also boasts a powerful V6 engine and enough creature comforts and technology to keep you content for long drives. It works as an everyday vehicle, but really shines when you take it off-road. It has ample towing capacity (up to 6,300 pounds) and enough agility through rough terrain, rocky hills and steep descents to keep even the most adventurous weekend warriors satisfied.
In a full-size pickup truck, the American-made Tundra Limited Crewmax offers premium luxury and technology, as well as brute strength. In a promotional video. the Tundra pulled the space shuttle, so it can handle your trailer or boat … no problem. Boys got to haul their toys, and the Tundra does it in style with bold styling, refined interior and ample room for five. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how spacious the cabin is. Whether the road is paved or unpaved, traveling to the lake or school, the Tundra is the king of the urban jungle.
HIGHLIGHTS: • Pro-4X package — This is Nissan’s most advanced offroad package. It includes shift-on-the-fly 4WD system, Bilstein off-road performance shock absorbers, electronic locking rear differential, and tough skid plates for the oil pan, fuel tank and 4x4 transfer case. • Hill descent control/hill start assist — Prevents those hair-raising stops on steep slopes by holding brake pressure a few seconds to keep the truck from rolling backwards. • Utili-track bed channel system— Nissan’s innovative cargo-carrying system with four tie-down cleats keeps heavy, bulky loads firmly in place. Add the optional Bed Extender, which is great to fit ATVs and motorcycles. • Rockford Fosgate Audio System — What good is a muscle truck without a kickin’ sound system? This system cranks with 10 hard-charging speakers. • White-faced gauges — I can’t tell you why exactly, but I really dig the white-faced gauges and satin chrome bezels. They just make the dashboard pop.

SUMMER 2014
HIGHLIGHTS: • Towing power — Has towing capacity up to 10,500 lbs., hauls more than 2,000 lbs. and is SAE J2807 compliant. • Massive ring gear — Toyota fitted the rear differential with a massive 10.5-inch ring gear. Under the stresses of heavy loads, the ring gear is crucial when power is transferred to the rear axle. • Trailer-sway control — No one wants a runaway trailer, so this works in two ways: by detecting trailer sway and applying brake pressure at individual wheels, and by controlling engine torque to help stabilize the trailer … or your brand new boat. • Entune Premium JBL audio system with navigation — Got to have good tunes en route to the lake, and this system is outstanding. Controls are simple and intuitive. The navigation is a must for those trips up north. • Mild makeover for 2014 —The exterior received a larger grille, reworked lighting and bolder bodywork aimed to beef up its appearance.

2014 JEEP CHEROKEE TRAILHAWK 4X4
The Forester, one of the original car-based crossover SUVs, shows off a re-design in 2014. The Forester is one of Subaru’s top selling vehicles, and for good reason. It’s a terrific all-around compact SUV, with plenty of turbo-boosted power, ample passenger room, an improved interior, and solid all-weather AWD capabilities. The Premium edition has plenty of standard amenities, like a panoramic moonroof, 18inch aluminum alloy wheels and rear-vision camera, though we wish the 4.3-inch color multi-function display it’s paired to was a bit larger. Its safety features earn high marks in IIHS crash-test scores.
The Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk is brand new for 2014 with a radical design: it’s built on a Fiat unibody platform with an advanced drive system, a funky exterior styling, and a well-appointed interior. The Trailhawk, which earned Jeep’s Trail Rated designation for offroad excellence, is a nimble car-based crossover that is an extremely capable all-weather, all-terrain warrior for the seasonal adventurer. The standard four-banger, however, is greatly underpowered in the Trailhawk set-up, so we recommend upgrading to the 3.2L V6 engine, which cranks out more power (271 hp and 239 lb.-ft. torque) to handle tougher conditions and better performance on the pavement.
HIGHLIGHTS: • X-Mode System — A unique stability-control program that works together with the electronically managed AWD system to maximize traction on slippery surfaces by summoning softer throttle mapping and lower gear ratios. It also provides additional traction going up steep inclines or going down with Hill Descent Control. • Subaru’s Boxer engine —This legendary engine has pistons that move side to side, cancelling out each other's vibrations so it can run smoother and more efficiently. • Roomy cargo area — With 31.5 cubic feet of space, under-floor storage and 60/40-split flat-folding rear seat, there is plenty of room to carry groceries, baby strollers and camping gear. • Subaru Intelligent Drive — SI-DRIVE technology lets the driver select the vehicle's driving characteristics with one of three selectable modes (intelligent, sport and sport sharp) via the steering wheel controls.
HIGHLIGHTS: • Offroad grit — Off-road features include Active Drive Lock, 2-speed 4WD with rear locker, 17-inch aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires, skid plates, 20-inch water fording capability and off-road suspension with one-inch factory lift. Rear-axle disconnect lets you go from four-wheel drive to two-wheel drive, and back again, seamlessly and automatically. • Selec-Terrain System — Just spin the dial. Five settings offer different traction controls to match the road and weather conditions: Auto, Snow, Sport, Sand/Mud and Rock modes. • Command central: Front and center is a massive 8.4-inch touch screen that powers the Uconnect 8.4 infotainment system. • Storage galore — Flip up the passenger seat cushion and you’ll find a hidden, in-seat storage compartment, and above the center stack is a convenient covered bin for personal items.
SUMMER 2014
Wheels_all_Health&Body BEAUTY 5/28/14 7:19 AM Page 8
The all-new Highlander was completely redesigned for 2014. Toyota’s crossover SUV — built on the Camry platform — has always been a well-respected vehicle, but its exterior was rather bland looking. The thirdgeneration Highlander gets a dramatic makeover with a larger, aggressive grille, LED daytime running lights for added style and visibility, and integrated, aerodynamic Chromtec roof rails for a bolder look. It still looks closer to a minivan than an off-road SUV, but the new package works well, offering front-drive architecture, AWD capability and all-around family-oriented transportation. HIGHLIGHTS: • Turn-by-turn navigation — With a quick glance within your sightline, you’ll get turn-by-turn directions from the GPS system on the 4.2-in. color LCD display located in front of the steering wheel. • Ergonomic dashboard — The dashboard is clean and intuitive with soft materials and easy-to-find controls. Underneath is a clever in-dash shelf for gadgets and charging cords, giving you easy access to the power and USB ports. • Third-row versatility — The Highlander easily accommodates seven people when you need more room, with the 60/40 split third-row seat that folds flat and reclines when not in use. • Conversation mirror — I always appreciate when engineers make smart use of wasted space. Toyota put a conversation mirror on the backside of the sunglass storage compartment, allowing you to quickly glance back to those in the rear seats. And it stores your often-misplaced and mistreated sunglasses. Very clever.
2014 LEXUS GX460 LUXURY
VITAL STATS
True body-on-frame SUVs are slowly disappearing, being replaced by the lighter, more nimble unibody designs. One of the better truck-like SUVs in the class is the second-generation GX460, the luxurious brethren of the Toyota 4Runner. If you like your SUVs big, bold and beautiful, the GX460 is your ride. It offers soft leather seats, Mahogany wood paneling, leather trim, V8 power, a long list of technological marvels, and a quiet, comfortable ride for up to seven people.
2014 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum V6 AWD Engine: 3.5-liter, 24-valve V6 Output: 270 horsepower and 248 lb.-ft. torque Transmission: 6-speed automatic MPG: 18 city/24 hwy 0-60: 7.3 seconds Price as tested: $44,450
HIGHLIGHTS: • Off-road chops —The full-time 4WD system has a transfer case with high and low gearing and a lockable limited-slip center differential. With 8.1 inches of ground clearance, the GX confidently goes from paved highways to unpaved backroads with plenty of traction and control. • All-terrain performance — Features like CRAWL Control (to optimize traction and help maintain a slow, consistent speed), Downhill Assist Control (to help keep the GX at a slow, constant descent speed), and Hill-Start Assist Control will keep the GX well-grounded and out of ditches. • Plenty of towing power— With a powerful drivetrain, the GX can tow up to 6,500 pounds, while the new Trailer Sway Control helps detect and prevent excessive trailer movement. • Glorious sound — Designed exclusively for the GX, Mark Levinson’s Premium Audio System immerses the cabin in concert-hall-like clarity, featuring 7.1-channel surround sound, 17 carefully tuned and positioned speakers and 330 watts of audio output.

2014 NISSAN QUEST 3.5 LE
2014 LEXUS ES350
After weeks of test driving sports cars and SUVs, I was finally presented with the keys to a minivan. Well, it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it. All kidding aside, this actually is an exceptional vehicle: a roomy and wellappointed people carrier (seats 7) with plenty of luxury amenities and tech features to keep everyone content and comfortable on long road trips.
There are sexier models designed by Lexus, but if you’re looking for a luxury sedan, and not a highperformance sports car, then the ES350 is an excellent choice. It is indeed all about comfort, and there's nothing wrong with that. With select options and luxury packages added, this model will have you feeling like the Chairman of the Board.
HIGHLIGHTS: • One-touch power sliding doors and power liftgate — extremely useful when your arms are full with grocery bags or kiddies. Just tap the button and the respective doors slide/lift open easily, for fumble-free access to the cabin or cargo area. • Around View Monitor — This is one of the cooler new tech features. The videogame like display system creates a bird’s-eye-view of the Quest on the monitor, allowing for easier parallel parking. • 2nd- and 3rd-row climate controls — Grandma is cold, the kids are hot, and everyone in front is just right. Not a problem. Back seat passengers can control the air conditioning or heat without interfering with the climate in the front. • DVD Entertainment System— Eliminates “are we there yet.” The second row 11-inch widescreen monitor (with gaming inputs) and Bose audio system with 13 optimally-placed speakers creates a mobile movie theater. • Flexible cargo space — The 2nd- and 3rd-row seats are extremely versatile … flipping and folding to carry any combo of people and things.
HIGHLIGHTS: • Sports Driving Mode — With the push of a button, this changes the gauge cluster lighting to a fiery red and alters the power train for faster gear changes and more dynamic throttle mapping. I felt like Batman. • Mark Levinson Premium Audio System — I have no idea who Mark Levinson is, but his 15-speaker, 835-watt surround sound system will have you rolling down the windows and cranking up the jams. • Exterior design changes — With a few cosmetic changes in 2013, Lexus added a spindle grille, door flares and LED running lights to modernize the look of the ES line. • Rear-seat heaven — No more hollering “shotgun” with this ride. The rear seat offers generous headroom and class-leading legroom for passengers to easily cross their legs. Rear side–window sunshades and power rear sunshade keep the sun out as well. • Ultra Luxury Package —Takes the posh interior to a whole new level with perforated premium leather seats, bamboo trimmed interior, bamboo and leather trimmed shift knob and a heated wood steering wheel.

2014 Lexus IS-F Engine: 5.0-liter, 32-valve V8 Output: 416 horsepower and 371 lb.-ft. torque Transmission: 8-speed automatic MPG: 16 city/23 hwy 0-60: 4.6 seconds Price as tested: $68,170
2014 SCION FR-S
The Lexus IS-F, which made its debut in 2008 to challenge the BMW M3 sedan, is in its last year of production. And it’s a bittersweet swan song for the V8-powered, 416-hp rear-drive rocketship. It’s an impractical, gas-guzzling indulgence, but it’s a thrilling beast that emits an adrenaline-pumping growl when you step on the accelerator. Throw in Lexus luxuries and amenities, and you have a legendary high-performance sports sedan. Parting is such sweet sorrow.
The FR-S, Scion’s high-revving, rear-wheel drive sports car, draws a lot of attention. The 2+2-passenger, 2-door coupe was jointly developed with Subaru, which markets it as the BRZ. Both cars, which are identical except for minor trim differences, use Subaru engines and transmissions. No matter the nameplate, the Scion FR-S is a fun-to-drive sports coupe available in 6-speed manual transmission (highly recommended), and a 6-speed automatic transmission, which sort of defeats the car’s mission. For a sports car like this, even a good automatic trannie can’t hang with the three-pedal option.
HIGHLIGHTS: • Built for speed — A powerful engine paired to a revolutionary eight-speed automatic transmission results in some jaw-dropping numbers: a stop-watch speed of zero to 60 in 4.6 seconds and a top-speed of 172 MPH. • Must be the wheels — The IS-F rides on staggered fit 19-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels manufactured by BBS, which are found on top-level racing cars around the world. The fronts are 8.5 inches wide and wrapped in 225-width tires; the rears are 9.5 inches wide and fitted with 255s. • Sharp cornering — Carving up asphalt with a beast like the IS-F requires grace. Double-wishbone front and multilink rear suspension systems include shock absorbers with stiff springs and large stabilizer bars optimized to precisely control body, wheel and suspension motion. • Paddle shifters — The steering wheel's paddles let you control the Sport Direct-Shift transmission with lightning-quick response. • Driver comfort — Bolstered leather-trimmed sport seats fit like a glove, especially important during hairpin turns.
2014 Scion FR-S Engine: 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder Boxer Output: 200 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. torque Transmission: 6-speed manual MPG: 22 city/30 hwy 0-60: 6.2 seconds Price as tested: $25,850

SUMMER 2014
HIGHLIGHTS: • Visual appeal —The FR-S certainly looks the part, with a long low hood, swooping low roof lines, bold wheel arches, stylish headlamps and a widemouth grille. It’s available in seven vibrant colors to suit any taste. • Laser accurate handling — With a low-center of gravity, a well-tuned suspension and a Torsen limited-slip differential to maintain power at both rear wheels, maneuvering through tight turns is crisp and precise. • Drift away — The FR-S was tailor-made to hang its tail out. Drifts are always willing and waiting to be engaged, and once initiated, completely controllable and lots of fun. • Kickin’ sound — Got to have good jams in a ride like this, and the standard 300-watt, 8-speaker Pioneer touchscreen audio system with Bluetooth streaming should do the trick. For an extra $1,198, you can upgrade to the BeSpoke Premium Audio System with voice-activated GPS. ▲

SUMMER 2014
WHEN WE ARE YOUNG we generally feel invincible, and preventative skincare isn’t even on our radar. Many of us feel that our beautiful, healthy, wrinkle-free skin will be with us for many years to come. However, to ensure that this becomes a reality, we need to take the proper steps with our skincare products. As we age our skin has different requirements to maintain, repair, and protect itself. The years of our 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s all require different upkeep, with different types of products.
All ages should follow the basics of skincare. Use a cleanser that suits your skin type, and moisturize in the morning and evening. Exfoliate your skin two to three times a week to ensure the maximum penetration of skincare products and to stimulate cell renewal. Most important, wear sun protection every day, regardless of the weather. UV rays can penetrate cold and cloudy weather, so you should wear sunblock year round. In your mid to late 20s, your skin begins to show some moderate signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, which appear mainly around the eye area. The skin can also begin to feel dehydrated and some mild pigmentation may begin to show. I suggest using an eye cream containing Argireline to reduce and prevent expression lines, and a cream containing antioxidants and hydrating actives. As for the rest of your skin, make sure to moisturize every day to keep skin hydrated, plump and youthful. Always use a daily sunscreen to keep the skin healthy, and to prevent more wrinkles and fine lines. Sunblock is the most important step in preventing aging, since sun damage is one of the main causes of aging. In your 30s, more lines and wrinkles will appear and deepen, mainly expression lines on the forehead and around the eyes. The

skin’s collagen and elastin production begins to slow down resulting in some mild loss of skin elasticity. Serums are now an absolute necessity, as they are concentrated with active ingredients and can soak deep into the skin. I suggest a daily serum boosted with peptides, such as Matrixyl 3000, to stimulate collagen production and to minimize wrinkles and loss of skin tone. Also, don’t forget about the eye area. Use an eye product containing a combination of peptides to reduce wrinkles, and a cream containing antioxidants. Again, sun protection, moisturizing and exfoliation are all an absolute must. In your 40s and 50s, the skin will begin exhibiting an increased loss of firmness, perioral lines will become more evident, and the skin will continue to feel more dehydrated, due to a loss of moisture. Also, the normal cellular cycle may become disrupted. Using a product containing Tetrapeptide 26 will re-synchronize the skin’s circadian cycle, allowing it to repair at night and protect itself during the day. Matrixyl 3000, Dermaxyl and Retinol are great ingredients that will help stimulate collagen and elastin. Adipofillin is a must-have ingredient, as it will plump the skin to reduce the perioral lines and the loss of tone in the neck. Continue using a daily sun protection, exfoliator and moisturizer as well. Once you hit your mid-50s, the skin continues to thin, lines and wrinkles are very apparent, and the skin begins to sag and appear uneven with pronounced pigmentation. Alpha hydroxyl acid exfoliants should be used at the change of every season to reduce the keratinization of the skin. I recommend using repairing serums highly concentrated in peptides to stimulate cellular metabolism, collagen and elastin. Use your chosen serum every morning and evening, coupled with a cream to reinforce the skin’s barrier and provide antioxidant protection. Again, wear sunblock every day. If you follow these guidelines at each stage in your life, your youthful glow will stay with you well into your later years. Just a few additional techniques paired with the basic skincare necessities of sun protection, exfoliating and moisturizing can make a world of difference.

Chasing Perfection Tips for creating healthy fitness goals and loving your results
▲ ▲
“I AM FAT! I LOOK TERRIBLE IN THESE JEANS! I hate my body! I will not go anywhere that requires wearing a swimsuit!” Have you ever said any of these things? Know someone who has? Chances are that either you have said this, or you know someone else who has. However, a large number of people who feel this way are actually in what is deemed optimal health and fitness based on their body fat (2531% for women and 18-25% for men). If you are in optimal health, but still chase perfection, this article is for you. Perfection can be defined as having no flaws. Based on this definition we can see that that is not a realistic goal for the human body, but many people are chasing that target. There are a number of reasons that can lead to one’s desire for a perfect body. Magazines that have edited models’ photos and athletes who privately go to extreme and unhealthy lengths to achieve a look can lead to the unrealistic expectation that most individuals could achieve the same results.
Perfection can be defined as having no flaws ... we can see that that is not a realistic goal for the human body, but many people are chasing that target.

The following are signs that you should look for in yourself and others to make sure you and/or they do not have an unhealthy or unrealistic body image: • Constantly pulling your shirt down or fidgeting with your clothes. • Wearing clothes that are too big. • Avoiding mirrors. • Avoiding activities that would require you to be in shorts, a tank top, a swimsuit or other revealing clothes. • Stressing about missing workouts. • Putting exercise before other important things such as work, family or health. • Always feeling fatigued and/or getting injured. Fortunately, there are ways to adjust your thinking and to embrace your body. As a certified fitness coach who specializes in aesthetics, I feel that my expertise can provide some healthy tips for individuals looking at fitness as a means to an end for
looks. I was voted the number one trainer in the nation for pageant training in 2013, have competed in natural body building and have trained dozens of clients who have placed and won overalls in competitions, and now I want to help you. Here are a few of my best tips: • Know your genetics. While I do not think genetics always prevent us from achieving our ideal look, they are important. Some people will say that since their parents were overweight, they have the same destiny — while studies do show that people who have overweight parents have certain predispositions, everyone can still choose to live a healthier, leaner life. However, if you have a long torso, shorter limbs, or you are tall, short, etc., these things cannot change. You must shape the physique you have by eating healthy and exercising. • Love yourself! Realize you are special and find at least one thing you love
about yourself, focus on it, and remind yourself of it daily. As you go forward, try to find something new you love about yourself. Don’t just focus on looks. Maybe you are a good planner; you are clean, intelligent, kind, etc. Write it down and repeat it when you are feeling down and out. • Set S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) goals. Knowing that perfection fulfills none of these parameters, set attainable goals such as, “I will not drink more than one glass of wine each night,” “I will not eat refined sugars or foods with trans fats” or “I will go to the gym four times this week.” I suggest you write down these goals and share them with an accountability partner. Write daily goals to help build up your confidence and even make some that focus on more than physical health.

A quote that I remind clients of when training is: “Success is a journey, not a destination,” spoken by Ben Sweetland. Knowing that you are making healthy choices should be the goal. SUMMER 2014
WHEN CHARLES PINTO DECIDED TO BUY HIS FIRST ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE it wasn’t in order to quit smoking or, at the very least, to smoke less. He even went so far as to say, “There was nothing in this world that could get me to quit smoking, nothing at all.” Yet today he is no longer a cigarette smoker. He has taken a step into the future with what he and the e-cigarette community call “vaping.” Simply put, it’s a device that uses liquid vapor, or juice as it’s called, to mimic the look of smoke and is smoked just like a
regular cigarette, but with only three chemicals, compared to its counterpart’s staggering 4,000. Pinto owns Evapeology and has developed a community of faithful customers, the majority of whom enter his store hoping to quit smoking tobacco. In fact, last year alone, more than one million people who switched to e-cigarettes have now quit smoking. Smoking, while an addiction, creates a community with a strong sense of camaraderie and Evapeology continues to offer that. In addition to being able to purchase all of your vaping necessities at Pinto’s store, you can enjoy its vapor-lounge and a beverage, ranging from soda and energy drinks to Starbucks products. To enhance the flavors of these drinks you can purchase “juice” for your e-cigarette in companion flavors. Pinto recommends Caramel Macchiato to accompany your morning coffee. Other flavors include Wicked Kiss (strawberry custard), Spearmint, Banana Nut Bread and Dos Melons to name a few. While there are many “grades” of juices, Evapeology only sells the highest quality from the most reputable producers, all of which are made in the U.S. One of the brands that you can find at Evapeology is BRV, Bottle Ready to Vape. The proceeds from

FAST FACTS
• An electronic cigarette is a battery-powered device that simulates tobacco smoking by producing a vapor that resembles smoke.
“Quitting feels good,” Pinto said. “I was in the bank today, waiting in the teller line, smoking my e-cigarette when a stranger turned to me and said, ‘Congratulations, you’ve quit smoking, right?’” Affirmations like this are what drive people to make the smart choices when it comes to their health. Pinto said that he opened his store for a very personal reason: “I have to help others, I have to spread the word.” ▲
these sales benefit wounded, homeless, and active American soldiers by providing them with e-cigarettes free of charge. They have even been shipped to Afghanistan to allow those soldiers a chance at quitting. Vaping gives people the opportunity to quit smoking while offering the hand to mouth movement that Pinto said he was addicted to, as well as the community that smoking creates.
• Electronic cigarettes contain fewer toxins than standard smoking products. • A February 2014 survey by the French Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction of 2,052 individuals estimated that between 7.7 and 9.2 million individuals have experimented with using electronic cigarettes.

Country Thunder 2014 The West's most popular country music festival was as wild as ever ▲ ▲ ▲
▲
INGRAINING ITSELF IN ARIZONA’S CULTURE, we now have the “6th C” of Arizona: Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, Climate and Country Thunder. As the summer sun began to scorch one of Arizona’s most historic locations, country music lovers from around the state headed to Florence’s most popular music festival — Country Thunder. Thirsty for top-notch artists, beautiful weather, and a weekend of Wild West activities, country fans trekked to the Country Thunder music festival like drought-stricken critters crawling to a watering hole. Throughout the weekend, fans enjoyed some of today’s most popular country artists like Jason Aldean, Miranda Lambert, The Band Perry, Thompson Square, Easton Corbin, Craig Morgan, and many more. Attracting nearly 20 food vendors and more than three dozen retail vendors to cater to this crazy country crowd, fans purchased more than 1,000 cowboy hats and almost 15,000 Country Thunder T-shirts throughout the four-day weekend. These party animals consumed more than 9,000 corn dogs, 9,000 hot dogs, 14,000 hamburgers, 4,000 funnel cakes, and an estimated 67,043 bottles of water. Leaving behind nothing but invaluable memories and almost 57 tons of garbage, our country-crazed fans can now only wait anxiously until next year's country storm comes thundering.

Rising Prices, Improving Market Expert insight on today’s real estate market, including tips for both buyers and sellers
▲ ▲ ▲
With the reduction in the number of distressed properties, we should be able to expect a more stable market with less volatility in sale prices
RECENT REPORTS INDICATE THAT THE AVERAGE HOME PRICE in Maricopa County is slowly on the rise. So what does this mean for local homebuyers and sellers? “We are now seeing significantly fewer distressed properties [i.e. short sales, pre-foreclosures, bank owned, etc.] on the market. This may be bad news for bargain hunters, but good news for the real estate market in general,” explains Mike Salyer, a managing broker with Keller Williams Realty
© Dave Bramlett
Sonoran Living. “With the reduction in the number of distressed properties, we should be able to expect a more stable market with less volatility in sale prices and see less of the severe peaks and valleys that we started experiencing back in 2005.” While there are fewer distressed properties, the overall home inventory has increased significantly since last year when homes were selling slower and were on the market longer. Also, as Salyer noted, research shows that the low-end or distressed market is way down. For example, a recent study by Arizona State University (ASU) shows that homes under $150,000 are down 47%. The luxury and fine home market has been the last to recover, but these higher prices are bringing the overall market up, explains real estate expert Gary Colin. So, as a seller, what can you do to set your home apart to get the highest price? “Choosing a professional that understands all aspects of marketing, staging and negotiating is key,” Colin says. “When a buyer has so much to choose from, one little thing can make them move on to another home — which is your competition. So, be available for all showings and be realistic on the price you’re listing your home at.”
RealEstate_Gary_SMR14_Health&Body BEAUTY 5/27/14 9:25 PM Page 3
• A professional photographer can do far more for your home’s photos through evening shoots and high quality aerial shots. • Be wary of long-term agreements with realtors without performance and marketing guarantees. • Don't get stuck in a contract that limits your home’s ability to sell. • Professional staging is more than just removing personal pictures. • Whether it’s through repairs, paintings or rented items, interior designers can make a home look like a model home ready for move-in. • Know your home’s competition when setting its value. With a larger inventory of homes, buyers have more choices and you will have less leverage and fewer viewings if your home is overpriced.
upscale homes.
“Many home sellers look at others’ listing prices and sometimes those have been on the market for months with multiple price reductions,” Colin continues. “When prospective buyers see a home on the market for a while, they think something may be wrong and move to the next.” He adds that the good news is that the market is fairly stable and that's beneficial for all homeowners, including those that are selling or plan to sell. In addition, with many of the distressed homes gone, the average price is still reasonable. Ideally, with now-rising rates still at historic lows, many people are stepping up to upscale homes that they never even knew they could afford, Colin says.
