Bearizona in Northern Arizona Gives Visitors a Taste of the Wilderness You love the Phoenix Zoo, but can’t bear to visit in the middle of summer when high temperatures are scorching the Valley. If you want a great animal wildlife experience away from the heat, try Bearizona in Williams, Ariz. Bearizona is a 150-acre drive-through wildlife park that promises to give you a close encounter of the wild kind. Visitors drive their own vehicles through the park, which is loaded with majestic bison, nimble big horn sheep, stealthy wolves and adorable bear cubs — all roaming about giant pens. At Bearizona, you can experience animal wildlife the way it was meant to be, in a natural environment, all from the comfort and safety of your own vehicle. “I really hope that when people come to Bearizona, they make a connection with the animals,” said Vanessa Stoffel, the park's chief operating officer. Visitors should allow at least one hour for the entire Bearizona

adventure, which includes both the drive-through and Fort Bearizona walk-through portions. Visitors can travel at their own pace, completing the visit in as little as 30 minutes, or as long as they like. Once guests have paid admission, they may stay until the park closes at dusk, and drive through as many times as they wish. Bearizona is open every day from March to Dec. 31 weather permitting. Hours of operation vary depending on the season, though 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. seem to be standard hours. ADMISSION: CHILDREN AGE 0-3 YEARS CHILDREN AGE 4-12 YEARS ADULTS SENIORS

HOW MEN SHOULD DRESS FOR EVERY OCCASION “Many men think it no longer matters how they dress, but it most definitely does,” says Glen R. Sondag, a Chicago investment adviser. “Whether we like it or not, we are often judged by what the wear — to work, at social events, and numerous other outings. It never hurts to look your best.” The problem, Sondag acknowledges, is that men get little guidance from each other and often resist advice from their girlfriends or wives. They don’t read or trust articles on the latest fashions for men, and vague terms such as “business casual” leave them confused. “Men rely on their own instincts or whatever feels comfortable to them, often with disastrous results,” observes Sondag. “Most men could use some help.” Sondag, known as a sharp dresser ever since his youth, realized he could help out. He has written “Anything Other Than Naked,” a practical guide for men on how to dress properly for every occasion. “My book began as a list of do’s and don’ts for my four sons,” he says. “My mother, a skilled seamstress who made all of her own clothes and some of mine, taught me everything about fabrics, tailoring, fit, clothing construction, and the value of always dressing appropriately. While in graduate school, I worked in a clothing store and spent every dime I made on clothes. My interest in clothes has never waned.” “Anything Other Than Naked” is an illustrated 86-page book with separate chapters on how to evaluate, select, and wear each item of clothing — from suits, shirts, ties, and trousers to sweaters, belts, shoes, and outerwear. One chapter focuses on matching suits, shirts and ties. Another chapter titled “Potpourri” touches upon wallets, men’s jewelry and watches, laundering, and grooming. Unsponsored by any purveyor, Sondag recommends a number of clothing brands, stores and catalogs that sell quality men’s clothing. Sondag concludes “Anything Other Than Naked” with 45 Tips for Dressing Well. Among them are:

▲ ▲ ▲

• When tied, your necktie should be no shorter than the top of your belt buckle and no longer than the bottom. • Never secure the bottom button on a suit jacket, but always button the one above it. • Your socks should be the same color as your trousers (or darker) • Your shoes should be darker than your suit.

20 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

THE LOCAL CLIMATE OF RESTAURANTS can be a fickle mistress. The Esplanade at 24th Street and Camelback has seen an upheaval in the past few years, with a nearly all their established restaurants either moving or closing. What was perhaps an unfortunate economic situation for previous tenants at The Esplanade, a new restaurant has sprung up, moved in and made a name for itself with an exciting concept. Mix together a Latin fusion menu, a cup of Cheers-inspired local bar, a pinch of upscale hangout and a cleverly conceived drink menu. Stir. What you get is Fuego Tacos. Literally translated, Fuego Tacos means, “fire tacos.” This is in no way indicative of the taste of the food fare, rather it is a great name for a local hot spot. Cozy, yet cleverly decorated, the restaurant is a fun place for meeting friends (come prepared to take home a few extra friends, the staff is uber friendly) a perfect place for a first date, or a convenient stop before or after taking in a movie at the newly remodeled AMC dinner/theater slated to open in August. You’ll probably be greeted by server, Matt. He is a gem, catering to every whim of Fuego Tacos’ guests and we simply cannot remember any employee so dedicated to the service of restaurant diners. “He’s my rock star,” gushed manager Josh Velazquez. As fantastic as the food is, the

JULY/AUGUST 2011

employees have created a new realm of guest service that lends to the unique experience that is Fuego Tacos. Start off with some unique drinks at the bar. The Fuego Margarita is what you will see many patrons ordering. The unique, jalapeno-infused drink is warm going down and rimmed with jalapeno, salt and cumin. It’s the most unique libation our group has had in a long time. The red sangria is also interesting; it includes just a touch of anise and generous chunks of fruit. Bartender and resident “honey badger,” Jen Martin helped to develop some of the drinks on the menu, most of which hover in the $5 range. The menu, although not huge, offers something tasty for everyone. “…We’re like the house of tacos,” mused Velazquez. Sourced from locally-made corn tortillas, all taco plates are accompanied with Cuban black beans, arroz con gandules (rice), house-made chips and salsa (not too spicy, with just a little kick). Our favorite tacos were the Short Rib Barbacoas with Angus short ribs braised in a fun sauce that includes pineapple, Dr. Pepper, soy and chipotle. Tangy, sweet and savory all at once, this is a must-have menu item. The Breaded Shrimp Tacos boast panko-crusted shrimp served with a tomatillo cream sauce. The Spicy Vegetarian Tacos are also a rich stand-out. Made with

10:53 AM

Page 3

peppers, onions, black beans, corn, homemade guacamole and pico hot savory tomatillo verde salsa, it is all served up in a hard shell. (Fuego Tacos hot tip: all tortillastyle flat tacos are served with two extra tortillas, making your two tacos, four; perfect for sharing.) Be sure to try to the creamed corn, it is outstanding. Mixed with cream and kissed with just a hint of jalapeno, this is one side dish that you will not find anywhere else. For something different, try the Cubano Panini Sliders or the Coconut Shrimp Salad. Chef Holly Arguello has been on board since Fuego Tacos first opened. She worked in conjunction with the owner to interpret special flavors and offer something unique. She has diverse menu capabilities and loves to offer the more sensitive customers some flexibility in the menu. Whether a customer has food allergies, gluten issues or is vegan, she’s equal

to the task of tweaking the menu. “I’m always willing to work with the customer,” Holly Arguello explained, “I want to make sure we’re giving them what they can eat.” The Arizona native is always thinking of fun and creative ways to “spice up” the menu and there is always something new. Look for Cuban, Pork and Short Rib sliders coming soon! Business comes in from everywhere and as Velazquez explained, “A lot of industry comes in. They help to spread the word.” Velazquez has worked in “the corridor” for 13 years and knows how to please that crowd. There is s shoe shine chair nestled at the base of the stairs. The gentleman that offers shoe shines at Fuego Tacos has been doing business in the corridor for many years and his presence is a special niche service that people in the area love. Customers enjoy the grassroots approach and the fact that Fuego

Tacos is working to keep the corridor unique and keep locals employed. Owner Jeff Ward has kept Fuego Tacos a fun and friendly family-owned establishment, just like the first restaurant, Fuego Bistro, located at 7th Street and Bethany Home Road. The second family venture, Fuego Tacos, is taking root in The Esplanade and is already creating a healthy buzz in its first six months of being open. Stop by with the family or just meet friends for a drink; either way, you’ll be impressed. As we worked our way through the plates of various tacos, we couldn’t help but notice that as guests were leaving, many of them were getting hugs and assorted affections from the staff. When you dine at Fuego Tacos, you truly become one of their family and each diner is personally thanked by multiple staff as they leave. You may score a hug, too. ▲

We All Just Wanna Be Big Rock Stars … The Hard Rock Café has become a hot spot for Valley residents attending sports events and concerts in downtown Phoenix

▲ ▲ ▲ ▲

22 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

I PERSONALLY REMEMBER WHEN the Hard Rock Café opened in Phoenix nearly some decades ago. It was originally located down on 24th Street and Camelback. A lot has changed in 20 years, including the location. But two things remain consistent: the commitment of Hard Rock to its fans and a brand that continues to remain relevant and revered. The staff from Arizona Sports & Lifestyle stopped in on a recent Saturday afternoon to meet the staff and chat with the General Manager and head Rock Star, Brent Rumph. Hard Rock Café is strategically located adjacent to Chase Field, making it a convenient destination or happenstance meeting place whether someone is attending a Diamondbacks game, taking in a show at The Herberger or attending a convention at Phoenix Convention Center. For attendees of any of those events, Hard Rock Café has something to engage everyone. It’s not just about having a great meal or hanging with the crew having a drink, it’s the chance to visit rock 'n' roll greatness and relive some awesome musical moments. In the '70s, remember when you got lost in the sea of love with Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks? Or maybe you were standing in the Purple Rain at the Prince concert in the '80s. Perhaps you were

JULY/AUGUST 2011

grunging out with Kurt Cobain and Nirvana or getting in to the groove with Madonna. More recently, you could have been enjoying the bar bandness that is the Dave Matthews Band. Regardless of what your rock 'n' roll memories sound like, Hard Rock Café lets you relive that experience and brings you closer to pop culture greatness. Rumph oversees the Hard Rock “venue” while keeping a firm grasp on bringing the entire Hard Rock experience to a roaring fruition for all his visitors. “It’s cool to work for a company that not contrived,” Rumph said. “It’s an authentic experience.” The company believes what it lives and lives what it believes. Hard Rock Café attracts all kinds of fans….and stars. Along with the parade of local celebs that include politicians, musicians and sports players from the Suns, Mercury, Cardinals and Diamondbacks, other high profile entertainers come to Hard Rock because of its reputation. Recently, “it boy” Justin Bieber performed a private show there and left behind a gaggle of star struck teenage girls and a staff that has undoubtedly lost some of their hearing from all the shrieking. What would the Hard Rock experience be without the memorabilia? Each Hard Rock Café features a unique collection

10:57 AM

Page 3

of guitars, music memorabilia, costumes and collectibles marking important moments in musical history and showcasing the colorful artists who shaped and continue to redefine the business. The Phoenix location boasts a massive guitar “chandelier” that rocks the main dining room. Memorabilia that lines the walls includes pieces from Nicks, Elton John, John Entwistle (The Who), Madonna, Alanis Morissette, Michael Stipe, Ugly Kid Joe, and Prince, just to name a few. Rumph pointed out that the most expensive piece of memorabilia is the gorgeous white motorcycle gracing the entrance that used to belong to Roy Orbison (and that is valued at more than $80,000). Rumph has a personal favorite piece of memorabilia in his restaurant; the Bob Dylan typed contract. “It’s my favorite because it’s truly, truly an authentic item,” he explained. No visit to the Hard Rock would be complete without delving in to the menu. Offerings are about what you would expect at other Hard Rock locations but there is a bit of a southwestern twist. To kick things off we opened with the "Jumbo Combo." It included hickory-smoked chicken wings, Tupelo chicken tenders, Santa Fe spring rolls and onion rings. The pankoencrusted onion rings are absolutely the best to be found in the Valley. Top notch. We also enjoyed a Haystack Chicken Salad, topped off with Tupelo fried chicken, crisp tortilla straws, spiced pecans and kissed with pico de gallo. It’s big enough for two to share. The legendary 10 oz. burger is a great, juicy standard (including cheddar cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, pickles and one of those insane onion rings) if you’re in the mood for a burger. Our group singled out the Twisted

Mac, Chicken and Cheese as the most fantabulous thing on the menu. Cavatappi pasta is tossed in a light bath of threecheese sauce (with just a wee hint of spicy kick), roasted red peppers, Romano, parsley bread crumbs, topped with a grilled chicken breast and served with a wedge of garlic bread. The menu also includes selections of pasta, fish, fajitas, steak, sandwiches and desserts. There is even a kids menu for the little rockers. (Staying earth-conscious, Hard Rock even includes wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon from a managed, renewable resource on their menu.) Any visit to a Hard Rock Café must include a stop in to the retail shop and visit employee Amber Squires. Every bit the lovely rock 'n' roll hellion, she knows every

nook and cranny in that store. T-shirts, keychains, lighters, drumsticks, glasses, hats, shorts and even a poker chip set are some of the fun name brand items that can be purchased. While we were speaking with Squires, four visitors from Korea were shopping for shirts. They came strictly to Hard Rock just to shop. The Phoenix restaurant was a destination they sought out because they loved the Hard Rock Cafe in their country. The 40th anniversary of Hard Rock Café is this year. If you’re ready for a fun evening of getting your rock on, make Hard Rock Café a regular stop, or visit before or after your next downtown concert or ball game. VERY ONCE IN A WHILE, Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine happens upon a truly unique local sports story. The journey of Michelle Rosado is an inspiration and fueled by her strong perseverance, business know-how and the loving memory of her father. She is a boxing promoter and as you might imagine, she has had the door slammed in her face or been dismissed more than a few times. Undaunted, she keeps moving forward. Her business savvy and industry knowledge serve her well in an almost entirely maledominated industry. It is her personal concern and her keen networking skills that have really turned heads to get her noticed. Rosado’s initial interest in boxing came through her father. They enjoyed boxing events together and often had small gatherings at their home to cheer on the fights. It was a sense of connection and community that Ms. Rosado cherishes to this day. Her father died when she was only 17, but she still feels that through the sport of boxing, a high level of discipline and respect can be passed from one generation to the next. The boxing promoter landed here after moving from Philadelphia, one of the biggest boxing hotbeds in the country. She threw her proverbial hat in to the ring a few years ago when she began in boxing management. “I started out managing a fighter out here, he didn’t know where to go or who to talk to,” Rosado explained. She saw first-hand how boxers were being treated and thought she could bring a newfound respect and level of professionalism to the sport. She already knew the sport from the outside and she quickly learned what was happening on the inside of the local boxing scene. In a clever usage of sports wording, she has founded Face II Face Events, which brings expertly produced and promoted boxing events to the Valley. It was not all fame and glory like what is portrayed in the movies. “Managing a fighter is different than promoting,” Rosado noted. “It was hard.” She didn’t exactly like what was going on behind the scenes and wanted to delve in and apply her skills to the sport and sought to add more integrity and efficiency to the entire production process. She reached out to some promoters for advice and pointers. She also hit the gyms. She reached out to gym owners and boxers to introduce herself around town and show that she was serious about putting the best possible face on local boxing. “The community has really embraced me,” she said. Using her business background, what she learned as a boxing manager and some industry insight provided by those involved in local and national boxing, she organized and put on her first Face II Face Events production on April 8, 2011. Held at The Madison Event Center in downtown Phoenix, the inaugural event drew a standing-room-only crowd of about 1,200. “It was phenomenal. It’s the only word I can use,” Rosado said. Everyone who turned up to support local boxing was treated to a night of genuine entertainment. “We had an amazing DJ

and good fights; real fights,” she explained. The night went off with nary a complaint, save for a parking issue. “If that was the worst complaint we get, I can live with that,” Rosado mused. “I want to bring quality boxing shows to Arizona,” Rosado explained. She emphasized that these shows are genuine, not staged or pre-determined. So exactly what goes in to promoting a boxing event? “Logistics!” said the busy promoter, “Guidelines, regulations and laws have to be followed meticulously. I have to make sure all the T’s are crossed, I’s are dotted and all the paperwork is filled out.” There are stacks of checklists that have to be reviewed and everything has to be met within deadline. Rosado’s education and work background is that of an engineer (she currently deals in full-scale building automation). Her attention to all the little details has served her well in setting up events for her company. In addition to bringing exciting boxing matches to Phoenix, Rosado is helping the local economy and building Arizona boxers' reputations right within the state, using a grassroots approach. In the past, boxers from Arizona had to travel to Denver, Las Vegas and Texas to participate in fights to gain some recognition. Face II Face wants to keep all of that effort in the state as a way to grow Arizona’s boxing following and ease some of the burden on fledgling athletes. “Let’s keep them here and help them build here,” Rosado noted. Face II Face seeks to showcase the sport to benefit everyone involved. At each turn, she continuously brings the spotlight of attention back to the boxers, their intense training and the great show that boxing can present. Going to watch local boxing live differs quite a bit different from most of the film depictions that have been presented on the silver screen. “Boxing has been glamorized,” Rosado said. That being said, she does single out several movies that have been exceptional examples and good stories about the sport. "The Fighter," "Ali," "The Hurricane," "Million Dollar Baby" and "Against the Ropes." Jackie Kallen, sometimes referred to as “The First Lady of Boxing,” has been a huge inspiration to Rosado. “She is my mentor. We write each other, we email….” she explained. Kallen is always ready to listen or to give advice and the promoter/ speaker/activist/journalist is also the kind of role model that Rosado hopes to be. When some people within the boxing community are hesitant to deal with a female boxing promoter, Kallen is there for Rosado with support. In the memory of her father who was a very generous and giving man, Rosado seeks to give back. Recently, Rosado did a photo shoot with local organization, Fathers and Families Coalition of America. Face II Face Events and Fathers and Families have teamed up to strengthen the community. The tagline for the unique partnership is "Knocking Out Father Abandonment." Rosado sees that when fathers and sons (or daughters) have a strong training relationship, it benefits the other areas of their lives. Many charitable organizations have approached Rosado and she is looking forward to getting more involved with other facets of the Valley’s philanthropic community in the future. “I love the glory of the sport,” and at the same time, Rosado finished, “I’m still a girly girl; I like to get dressed up and go shopping.” Her commitment to the sport and to Arizona’s boxing community will be well served by this multi-talented business woman. Face II Face Events will have its second event on July 22 at the Madison (located at 441 W. Madison St. in Phoenix). To learn more, go to www.FacetoFaceEvents.net or call 480-788-0777.

Hometown girl and former American Idol winner JORDIN SPARKS is living up to the hype with a career that’s on the fast track

WEST VALLEY RESIDENT AND 2007 "AMERICAN IDOL" WINNER JORDIN SPARKS may have performed for the president and may have platinum singles under her belt, but she's down to earth and dedicated to her family and charity. But don't get her wrong; she's still thrilled to be touring this summer with New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys, collectively known as NKOTBSB. "I'm really excited to go," Sparks told Arizona Sports and Lifestyle magazine before the tour began. "It makes total sense. For the most part, all of the people who are going to be in the audience are going to be girls my age who grew up with Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync — and it's going to be my mom and her friends. I'm so excited to sing on that stage and to be touring again as well. Plus, my set list and my songs have definitely been tweaked a little bit. We're definitely changing things around. I'm excited to see what the reaction's going to be." Among the songs on her set list for the tour is "I Am Woman," a punchy new single written by Ali Pierre Gaschani, Dean Josiah and OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, who also produced the track. She debuted the song on her return to the "Idol" stage on May 12, 2011, when resident metalhead James Durbin was shown the door. The performance was called "powerful" and "sexy," something that Sparks finds flattering.

The chemistry with Tedder was palpable as the two also collaborated on the platinum single "Battlefield," the title track to the 2009 sophomore collection. She said she knew that Tedder would put her voice in the best light. "He is such a perfectionist — as much a perfectionist as I am with my music," she said. "We went through, goodness, seven mixes before we got the perfect and final one over the past couple months. I heard it about 400 times and I'm really happy with the mix that we had. I'm so excited for the feedback I've been getting. You never know with music, how it's going to be received and how it's going to be taken so I'm hoping that I can do the most perfect video that goes with the song." Besides working on the new album and touring with NKOTBSB, Sparks has been busy in 2011. She still calls Arizona her home base, but traveled abroad in March with her good friend, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald, to distribute hearing aids to the less fortunate in Africa. "I went with Starkey Hearing Foundation," she said. "I went to Rwanda and we fit kids with hearing aids. I think we went through 1,800 people in three days. It was just crazy. We were literally there, they came with their pieces and we fit them with their hearing aids and cut them to size and (calibrated) the sounds and the frequencies. It was a big learning experience. It was so amazing. I had no idea that my music reached that far. You know what I'm saying? I knew I had some fans down there. But it was so fun to see that. It was so cool. "It was one of those things that I will remember for the rest of my life. Larry has been one of my really good friends since I was 14. It was fun to be able to go down there with somebody that I knew and somebody who has such a big heart and he's such a good guy." Charity runs deep within the Sparks family. Her parents, Jodi Weidmann Sparks and former professional football player Phillippi Sparks, are strong believers in giving back to the community. "That was definitely something that was instilled in me," Sparks said. "It's something that makes sense. It's so important to me. There's no greater feeling than like being able to go somewhere and do something for somebody else and see the

"It was … goodness, I was so nervous," Sparks said enthusiastically. "My hands were shaking. My heart was pounding. I was just like, 'I cannot believe I'm doing this again.' It's been about two years since I performed one of my own songs (on 'American Idol'). I did the finale last year. "To do something of my own, it was so crazy,” she continued. “For me, 'American Idol' and the National Anthem are two things that make me really, really nervous. I was just sitting here going, 'I can't believe I'm standing here.' By the time that thought went through my head, the doors opened and it was time for me to walk out and perform. I don't really remember what happened. I walked out there and I was off the stage. I don't know what happened in between. I'm really glad it went well from what I've been hearing from people." The song was definitely not one she expected to come her way. She admitted she was a little nervous about what listeners would say about the tune, which has been compared to a Beyonce track. It is slated to appear on her third album, on which she is still working. "I had been looking for a song that was new and fresh to give to my fans, and something different for me but something that wasn't so crazy that people were going to be like, 'OK, what is she trying to do right now?' she said. "I recorded a couple songs already (for a new album) and then I was sitting in the studio doing a song for (the Disney documentary) 'African Cats,' which Ryan Tedder was a part of. He walked into the session for that song and he looked at me and said, 'I have a song for you.'" Sparks said she's always open to hearing potential tracks for her to record. But this one blew her away. She fell so deeply in love with "I Am Woman" that she rush-released the single, without the backing of her third album. "That song played and my jaw was on the floor," she said emphatically. "I was like, 'Are you kidding me? Nobody has taken this song yet?' I didn't know what that song was going to be. I didn't know what it was going to be, I didn't know who was going to be the producer. But that song that's just it. This is the song. It's the one. We went with it and recorded it."

look on their face — even just walking down the street and saying 'Excuse me' instead of like bumping into somebody. It can be as miniscule as that or as big as being able to go to Africa and fit kids with hearing aids. "For me, I love doing that and it's rewarding for me. I don't do it to do it. I do it because I love to do it and it's kind of one of those pay it forward things. I'll do something or a friend of mine will do something, and somebody will see that and they're going to want to do something. Somebody will see them and they're going to want to do something. Pretty soon you have this whole chain of people who are going out and making a difference. It's making the world a better place. Hopefully we'll be able to keep doing that. I love being able to do it. It's fun for me. I'm lying here thinking about all the things that hopefully are coming up and the things that we have done. It's a really good fulfilled feeling and that's that really nice to have." Lying down isn't something that Sparks gets to do regularly, she said with a laugh. If there's one thing she learned after winning "American Idol," it was to try to get as much sleep as she possibly can. "I don't think I've slept in four years," Sparks said. "I'm still working on that. I think one thing that still remains really important for me and always has — even before American Idol — is the foundation that I have at home. My mom, my dad, my brother are definitely my rock, my backbone, and I don't know how I would be able to do this crazy schedule and do the things that I do without them. I think the biggest thing for me is keeping them in the loop, keeping them with me. Me and my brother are really, really close. I love being able to keep my family involved." In May, Sparks took her grandfather to the Kentucky Derby and had "the best time ever." Later this summer, she is going to head to Europe with her brother a send off before he attends college. "It's not just me that's going through big transitions," Sparks said. "My brother is going through crazy transitions. He's going from high school to college. My mom and my dad are going

34 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

through transitions with both of their kids now going to be out of the house. It's just one of those things. I always have to remember it's not just me going through a whole bunch of stuff. They are too. It's definitely important to me." But whether it's doing charity work, hanging out with her family or touring, there's one thing she keeps in mind. "I definitely have to make myself stop and smell the roses and stop and feel the sunshine and really soak things in," said Sparks, who performed at the Commander-in-Chief's Inaugural Ball, hosted by President Barack Obama, on Jan. 20, 2009. "I look back at the past four years (since the 'American Idol' win) and the 'Idol' performance really did this for me. I was rehearsing with that intro and, like, the video clips of me winning and the music videos, but it didn't really hit me until I was standing there. It all started on that stage and here I am four years later being fortunate enough to have a new single, and be able to tour and I've gone around the world and back and been able to meet these different bands and all these different opportunities. It's just so amazing. I will never get used to it. It's one of those things like I'm just like, 'Wow. I really get to go to Australia and tour? I get to go to Africa and do mission work? I get to sing for the president?' All these things that I get to do, it's so amazing. It's really, really amazing and I'm glad I get to do it. I'm definitely very thankful, very lucky, very blessed, and I'm hoping I get to do it for plenty more years to come. All I want to do is sing." ▲

RECHAR AND Ready TORake When PABLO SANDOVAL, the San Francisco Giants’ third baseman, needed to get into shape to save his baseball career, he turned to Ethan Banning of Triple Threat Performance in Tempe for an extreme body makeover

IT’S EARLY NOVEMBER 2010 IN TEMPE, ARIZ., and, while most professional baseball players are taking a much-needed vacation, golfing a round at the local country club, or just chilling for some much needed R&R, Pablo Sandoval of the San Francisco Giants is going through a grueling series of pre-workout calisthenics that were not for the faint of heart. He starts with a series of lunges along a long stretch of artificial turf that, at this early hour, probably feels like the “Long Green Mile.” His trainer, Ethan Banning, is barking out instructions like a drill sergeant bellowing at a set of new recruits. “Butt down Pablo, head up.” Sandoval continues through a series of exercises that everyone dreads: lunges, side lunges, crab walks and squat thrusts. And this is just warming up for the good stuff. After a dismal and sometimes embarrassing 2010 season, Sandoval dedicated his offseason to becoming the impact player he was in 2009, when he hit .330 with 25 homers and 90 RBIs in his first full major league season. By 2010 those numbers dipped to .268 with only 13 home runs and 63 RBIs in his second full season in the big leagues. The impetus for Sandoval was a humbling end to the 2010 season. Giants manager Bruce Bochy benched Sandoval for most of the postseason, and Sandoval could only watch as his teammates won the World Series without him. When it was over, general manager Brian Sabean told Sandoval if he did not get in shape he could start the 2011 season in the minors.

“I had to make a decision if I wanted to keep playing in the big leagues,” Sandoval said. “To save my career.” Sandoval acknowledges his weight yo-yoed last season and his hips hurt from the extra pounds. His defense suffered and he looked winded on the basepaths. It was time for a change. FIXING WHAT’S BROKE In October, Sandoval was tipping the scales at an unsightly 274 pounds — clearly living up to his moniker of “Kung Fu Panda.” His goal was to drop 35 pounds, and add some much needed lean body mass. So he turned to Ethan Banning of Triple Threat Performance in Tempe. Banning is old school. He’s not a big proponent of glam exercises and curls for the girls. During his first month with Sandoval, beginning in November, Banning busted out all the classics: sledge hammer to tractor tire, medicine ball against the wall, tackling sled, pull-ups and push-ups. Banning outlined his objectives during the four months he had to work with Sandoval: • Weight loss • General physical preparedness (GPP) • Increase mobility • Strength and power development • Increase functional strength The challenge was quite glaring. Sandoval’s body fat percentage was pushing 30 percent, and he had very little gym strength (because he had never trained before). It wasn’t a pretty sight. “When Pablo came to TTP, he was so far out of shape that his training program had to be modified substantially,” Banning said. “He could not do walking lunges for more than 5 or 6

yards at a time before having to rest. He could not do a single pull-up either and could barely do a push-up. That said, initially we focused on GPP and relative strength. Lots of body weight exercises like walking lunges … forward, backward, laterally, etc. Lots of isometric training (static holds). Lots of running of various distances.” Banning took the positives and worked with them. “Inside that overweight body was/is a tremendous athlete,” Banning explained. “His athletic IQ is very high. What I mean is that his ability to make biomechanical changes very quickly is very good. An example would be him doing a squat and me coaching him to change his technique. He could do this on the very next rep.” Banning knew positive results in the offseason would translate into more production on the field. “Confidence is a huge factor in all sports and particularly baseball,” Banning said. “Pablo needed to get his mojo back. A huge change in lean body mass helped with this part. He also had terrible relative strength. Relative strength is your strength to body weight ratio. His lack of relative strength was due to a number of factors. One, he was overweight. And another was his lack of experience developing his strength and power.” Losing weight in combination with a structured strength training program will dramatically increase an athlete’s relative strength. Pablo did both. Because of his lack of body maintenance, Pablo had poor mobility and function through his body, in particular his hips. Consequently, he could not effectively swing a bat and drive the baseball — most notably from the right side. “His fielding also deteriorated dramatically from his lack of fitness,” Banning said. “This was most evident late in the 2010 season when he could not get to the bag (third base) to get someone out. He looked like a fish out of water.”

Banning took the positives and worked with them.

him to generate lot of power into the baseball and move laterally in the field.” The 24-year-old Sandoval showed up to spring training in Scottsdale, Ariz., with a renewed attitude and a sleek body. The results paid off immediately. Sandoval has a huge spring, knocking in the team’s first home run of spring training and flashing the same quick bat that made him a rookie sensation. He improved his range at third base and overall looks like a new man in the field. Sandoval’s manager was impressed. “I’m proud of how hard he’s worked to get to this point,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “There comes a time when you have to take responsibility for yourself, whether it’s your actions or play. A lot has been done from the organization for Pablo. It was in Pablo’s hands and he took the bull by the horns, so to speak, and got himself in this kind of shape.” Sandoval’s diet underwent a complete overhaul as well. Gone were the excess carbs and empty calories, replaced by a nutrient-dense regimen that emphasized lean proteins and high-energy healthy fats in smaller individual meals spread throughout the day. He hired a personal chef to cook him three meals a day. He cut out the no-nos: ice cream, soda and chips. Sandoval’s hard work and clean diet paid off during the start of the 2011 season. He was smoking hot in April, crushing the baseball and racking up a .313 batting average with five homers. His incredible start to the season was derailed by a broken hand he sustained on April 30, which required him to miss six weeks. Now he’s back on the field and ready to prove that the 2010 season was an anomaly. The leaner and meaner Pablo Sandoval is here to stay. ▲

RESULTS IN THE GYM TRANSLATE TO RESULTS ON THE FIELD With a regular exercise schedule, and a diet carefully monitored by Banning, it didn’t take long for Sandoval to start shedding the pounds. By Jan. 1, Sandoval had dropped 16 pounds. By Jan. 15, he cut 22 pounds. At the Pepsi Home Run Derby in late January, the public got a glance at the new and improved Sandoval, who looked sleek at 247 pounds. But there was still work to be done before the start of Giants’ training camp. Banning and his staff — including Greg Oliver, one of Barry Bonds' longtime personal trainers, and Olympic decathlon champion Dan O'Brien — continued to press forward with Sandoval. Sandoval’s regiment began the progression: GPP/Isometric Strength/Structural Balance; Fat Loss/Relative Strength; Muscle Hypertrophy/Functional Mobility and, finally, Functional Strength/Power. “In his three months at Triple Threat Performance, Pablo did not touch a weight for at least the first month,” Banning said. “After laying an appropriate strength foundation, we began a more traditional strength training program. At this time, Pablo could barely squat 135 pounds. He now squats over 400 pounds. He could not do a single pull-up when we got him. Now he can do multiple sets of 10 pull ups.” By Feb. 18, Pablo was down to 241, an amazing 36-pound drop in 110 days. His body fat was down from 30 percent to 19 percent. The before and after photos were quite dramatic, like looking at photos of someone in their high school days and 20 years later after a few too many beers and bratwursts, except the photos were in reverse. Sandoval transformed his body, and now looked like a professional athlete. “He will benefit from a renewed sense of well being and confidence,” Banning said. “He is not carrying around an extra 40-plus pounds, so he moves much quicker. The bat feels like a toothpick in his hands and his new found hip mobility allows

pretty well for himself over the years. He has amassed nearly $1.5 million in career tournament earnings since 2004, and has made a couple of long runs in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and on the World Poker Tour (WPT). His biggest goal (besides the money of course) has always been to win a WSOP bracelet, for which he will vie again this summer at the 2011 WSOP at the Rio in Las Vegas. But now the stakes are higher, as O'Donnell’s 23-year-old daughter Jennifer is taking up the game, and the race is on to see who can get that coveted WSOP bracelet first. Like many people, O'Donnell (or K-O as many of his friends call him) was a regular visitor to Las Vegas, but he mainly played blackjack and craps, and never really considered himself a poker player. That was until 2004. While celebrating his birthday in Vegas he entered a satellite poker tournament and won a $10,000 seat to the WSOP Main Event. O'Donnell didn’t fare very well, busting out on the first day, but his passion for playing poker grew and he began playing more and more. He entered a couple of WPT events in 2005 and made the final table at the Legends of Poker in August of 2005. He earned $208,000 for his sixth-place finish, and at that point he knew he could be a player. “That was a strong field, and to finish sixth was really incredible,” he said. “At that point I decided to really focus on poker as see if I had a future as a professional poker player.” O'Donnell was in the mortgage business at the time and things were booming, so he took six weeks off to play in the 2006 WSOP. He played in 10 tournaments, cashed in six of those tournaments, and made two final tables (No Limit Hold’em and Pot Limit Omaha). His good run continued into the Main Event, where he finished a remarkable 21st out of 8,733 entrants, still the largest field ever for the WSOP. “You could say that 2006 was a fantastic year for me,” O'Donnell said smiling. “I was playing great poker and everything kind of came together for me at that point.” O'Donnell got knocked out by veteran poker pro Allen Cunningham, who had pocket Aces to O'Donnell's pocket Kings. Cunningham was third in chips at the time and O'Donnell was fourth in chips. “It’s not the fact that I lost with Kings, that happens, but the timing of it is what kills me to this day,” O'Donnell said. “If I had gone up against someone with a smaller chip stack, I could have survived and kept playing, and who knows how far I could have gone.” Ironically, O'Donnell also lost with Kings in the 2009 Main Event, where he finished 216th out of 6,994 players, the second-largest field ever. That brings us to his daughter. Jenn really didn’t care much about poker, it seems the game still rubbed off on her. When she was 19, she tagged along with her dad when he went to Australia to play in the Aussie Millions. Having very little interest in poker, Jenn only went so she could explore the city of Melbourne. “He kind of talked me into playing one of the tournaments, even though I didn’t

really want to,” she said. “I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but he sat me down and quickly explained to me the good starting hands and what beats what.” So Jenn entered a $1,500 buy-in No Limit event and finished 13th out of 2,500 players. It was her first live tournament ... and she was only 19. “Right then I was hooked, no doubt about it,” Jenn said with a laugh. When she got home she started playing online, and after finishing third in an $11 rebuy tournament with a huge field, she took a couple of semesters off from Arizona State University and went to spend the summer with some friends in Las Vegas, around the time of the 2007 WSOP. “I didn’t go to play in the World Series because I was only 19, I just went for the experience,” she said. “I was playing a lot of poker online and hanging around a lot of poker players, so I felt like I was learning a lot about the World Series without actually playing.” She admitted she is still inexperienced and has a lot to learn, but feels more confident about her game and knows she can get better. Like her dad, she plans to play in a couple of WSOP tournaments this summer. “If her schedule allows,” O'Donnell chimed in. “She’s got a restaurant to run.” That restaurant is K O’Donnell’s, a sports-themed bar/restaurant in North Scottsdale that Jenn now owns, after buying it from Kevin in March of 2011. “It had become difficult to juggle the restaurant and poker, so I made the decision to sell so I could focus on my poker career,” O'Donnell said. “I approached Jenn about buying the restaurant and I was thrilled when she took me up on the offer.” K O’s has a heavy emphasis on sports, and is a great place to bring the entire family for a night out, but make no bones about it, K O’s is a poker bar. “What else would you expect, of course we are a poker bar,” O'Donnell said. “It started out as a way to bring in business, but now we probably do it just because we enjoy it and it gives the bar a great identity.” The bar hosts free poker tournaments every Tuesday,

Thursday and Saturday, and players can accumulate points for a chance to play for a seat in a $1,500 buy-in WSOP event. You can also walk in at anytime and see a handful of other poker professionals hanging out at K O’s. “People like Joe Hachem, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Laak, Jennifer Tilly and Antonio Esfandiari have all played in the free tourneys,” O'Donnell said. “You can literally come in anytime and see a pro poker player here.” That brings us to the $1 million question… who will get a bracelet first? “Obviously my dad has a ton more experience than me, and he plays a lot more than I do, so I’d give him the edge,” Jenn said. “But, if he doesn’t get one soon, he better watch out, because I’m gonna be right on his heels.” O'Donnell answered the question a little differently. “She better not, she knows I’ll disown her,” he said. “Seriously though, of course I’d be happy for her if she won a bracelet, but I know I would never live it down.” Kevin and Jenn will be playing in the WSOP this summer, but both have different goals. Kevin will be in Vegas for the length of the World Series, trying to get his poker career back on track after not cashing at last year’s WSOP Jenn will spend the majority of her time this summer in Scottsdale focusing on the restaurant, but plans to get to Las Vegas to play in a few tournaments to gain more valuable experience. “This isn’t just a hobby, I’m taking poker seriously,” she said. “But I’m taking it slow and working my way into it. I would love to be a professional poker player somewhere in the future. Hey, my dad is doing it, why can’t I?” Like father, like daughter. ▲

Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre Breathing New Life in to the Saying ‘Dinner and a Show’

Often, dinner theater gets a bum rap by some who think that the food is sub-par or it’s only for retirees. Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre breaks the stereotype and is constantly seeking to engage audiences of all ages. Speaking from experience, the food is noteworthy as well. In the few hours leading up to show time, the showroom floor is all about the food while a very adept staff serves cocktails and drinks. Done buffet style, entrée dinner choices run the gamut of prime rib, fish, pork roast, beef medallions and more. Side dishes include selections of vegetables, potatoes, pasta and rice. A full salad bar and dessert bar are open until curtain time. A full bar is available before and during the show and food menus constantly change to keep it fresh and exciting for season ▲

ticket holders. In an innovative twist, sometimes the food is even “themed” to match the production. This time around, the play was the musical, "Seussical," which originally debuted on Broadway in 2000. A loose adaptation of "Horton Hears a Who," it also includes a mash-up of other Dr. Seuss characters and subplots. The play was definitely kid-friendly but also adult savvy. The audience included more than the typical share of kiddos for this particular production, but the adults in the audience caught all the jokes and references that innocently flew over the heads of the young ‘uns. The vibrant costumes

and outstanding singing alone were worth the ridiculously affordable ticket price. What is so unique about Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre is that they utilize a combination of local and national talent for their shows. "Seussical" was a perfect production choice for kids and kids at heart. "Billy Elliot The Musical" has garnered much acclaim since its London inception in 2005; perhaps most notably 10 Tony Awards —including Best Musical in 2009.

SIR ELTON JOHN HASN’T BEEN RELEVANT on the popular music scene for decades. Yet, through "Billy Elliot The Musical," John crafted his finest body of songs in decades. John was reportedly so moved by the 2000 film “Billy Elliot,” that he pursued writer Lee Hall and director Stephen Daldry until they agreed to collaborate with him on the musical. "Billy Elliot The Musical" made a

tour stop through Arizona at ASU Gammage Auditorium April 26 through May 8. And the performance didn’t disappoint the masses who came out. "Billy Elliot" is a crowd pleaser — and with good reason. "Billy Elliot The Musical" is directed by Daldry, who also helmed the film. The screenplay and lyrics were penned by Hall, who, too, wrote the book. And as mentioned, the music was written by John, who also created the music for "The Lion King." "Billy Elliot The Musical" has garnered much acclaim since its London inception in 2005; most notably 10 Tony Awards — including Best Musical in 2009. The story is set during the 198485 miners’ strike in the United Kingdom — a tumultuous period after Margaret Thatcher’s regime sends in police to break the unions (which ultimately destroys the British mining industry). Billy is the 11-year-old youngest son of widower, Jackie Elliot, who (along with older son, Tony) is partic-

ipating in the strike with the rest of the miners in their town. The community is a tinderbox of emotion and politics. Billy’s father decides to take his scrawny son for boxing lessons, but Billy discovers a ballet class happening in the same room one day. Apprehensive at first, Billy is soon sneaking off to ballet instead of boxing and the ballet instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson, discovers his natural talent. Of course this doesn’t fly when his father eventually finds out and forbids him from returning to class. Both themes — the dream of escape through self-expression and the communal struggle in dire circumstances — are fully realized and strikingly juxtaposed by the show’s chief architects: Hall, John, Daldry and choreographer Peter Darling. Daldry's direction for the stage

ing and jaw dropping. The dancing in this musical lifts the audience's hearts through the roof and into the heavens. Darling shows us exactly what the character feels through dance, with stunning results. Billy’s two major dance solos "Angry Dance" and "Electricity" are breathtaking showstoppers. Darling has created some of the finest, engrossing choreography that has ever been achieved for the stage. "Billy Elliot" is one of those rare shows that not only stands up to the hype, it surpasses it. version is magnificent — artfully balancing comedy and drama with equal success. Ian MacNeil's scenic design is flawless, from the dingy, crusty, molded combination central piece that serves as the union meeting hall/dance studio/boxing gym to some glorious glitz and glitter during several musical numbers. Set pieces glide/float in and out with hushed silence. John's music is phenomenal. It's what you come to expect from one of the true living legends of popular music. John's score is firmly rooted and pays great homage to the hymns and music of Wales and Northern England. Every song fits like a glove into the book, lyrics and direction of the piece. A TRUE JEWEL IN THE DESERT, Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort rises high out of the Northwest overlooking Phoenix — a spire of luxury and relaxation. Moments after turning into the property, located just off of 7th Street, south of Thunderbird, the feel of being in the city disappeared as I vanished into Phoenix’s North Mountains. My first stop was the newly renovated lobby. High ceilings stood over a lavish entryway, the welcoming voices of the resort staff echoed as I approached the front the desk. That’s where I met Jackie, who set the tone of my stay. Only a two-day veteran of the resort, Jackie filled me in on all the highlights Pointe Tapatio offers; from the four eateries, including the AAA Four-Diamond award winning restaurant Different Point of View, to the full service Tocaloma Spa and Salon, its championship par-71 golf course, Lookout Mountain Gold Club, and The Falls Water Village, an extravagant experience featuring a 40-foot waterfall, two large free-form pools, 23 private cabanas, sundeck terraces and a 138-foot enclosed waterside. Jackie made everything sound so good I would have thought she had been there since the resort opened in 1986. Which, believe it or not, according to Irene Krass, public relations manager, “We have

people who have worked here since [the resort] first opened.” The resort is inspired by SpanishMediterranean architecture and design. Narrow winding roads lead visitors up and around the mountain, giving the feeling of driving through a small village’s neighborhoods. Accommodations My suite was about half way up the mountain and is one of the 584 suites that make up Pointe Tapatio’s all suite accommodations — each with an eye popping view of the surrounding Valley. There are 547 two-room suites, consisting of one bedroom and a separate living room with executive work desk, refrigerated mini-bar, coffee maker, two cable televisions, two dual-line telephones with data ports, high-speed Internet access, hair dryer and ironing board. Guests can choose to upgrade to the larger Grande Suite, Signature Suite or Ambassador Suite. These 38 upgraded abodes offer the luxury of the standard suites, as well as additional amenities and various larger room layouts. All of the suites at Pointe Tapatio were decorated with the surrounding Sonoran landscape in mind.

A combination of earthy tones and patterns mixed with modern renovations in each room create a unique vibe. Flat screen televisions sit on entertainment centers that once harbored their much larger projection and tube predecessors while upgraded decor sit below a ceiling that shows off what used to be a much more Southwestern theme. Dining The outstanding Different Pointe of View restaurant, which has been esteemed with a AAA Four-Diamond rating, is king of the hill — resting atop the mountain. Floorto-ceiling windows give visitors a stunning view with dinner overlooking Phoenix. This renowned eatery serves a delectable

assortment of American cuisine with Mediterranean influence. Different Pointe of View is popular with weddings and private events, not just because of its fabulous meals, but also for its bold atmosphere that is as sophisticated as it is approachable. A favorite to many locals, Pointe in Tyme has a classically rich steakhouse feel to it. With the gravity of a large cigar bar, minus the smell, dark cherry stained wood lines the walls and ceiling, large plush seats and roomy tables provide a comfortable eating environment. The restaurant has a typical steakhouse-style menu. Appetizers feature crowd-pleasing favorites such as fried calamari and spinach artichoke dip. The Pointe Tapatio also offers two

smaller spots to grab a bite. Located beside the flowing waters of The Falls, the appropriately named Cascades Cafe offers outdoor dining. Enjoy the waters and amazing view while indulging in a light snack, or have a drink under clear blue skies. La Cantina is a south of the border lunch stop, also open for dinner. Check out the seasonal spot and chow down on some tasty Mexican cuisine. Golf Lookout Mountain Golf Club is an 18hole par-71 championship golf course. For the past nine years Lookout Mountain Golf Club has received the Golf Digest Four Star Award and has been voted as one of the top 450 courses in the country by the same

publication. Just like the resort itself, Lookout Mountain offers some mind blowing scenery, combined with its challenging play it is easy to see why nationally televised tournaments such as the Phoenix Celebrity Classic have been hosted here. The course is one of the only ones in the PhoenixScottsdale resort properties area to have holes winding through desert preserve without adjacent holes. Twelve holes of the 6,600 yard course give golfers uninterrupted views amidst canyons and rugged mountain hillsides. Not only has the course been improved for play, but also for the environment. Three lakes on the course have been replaced with new hazard complexes made up of bunkers and native desert waste areas. The annual water savings is estimated to be more than 20 million gallons, reducing costs by $140,000 per year. This major water saving endeavor combined with the resorts other eco-minded practices, such as the use of compact florescent light bulbs and low-flow water fixtures, has earned them green certification from the Arizona Hotel & Lodging Association, in partnership with the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and the Arizona Office of Tourism. Spa & Pools Why not get away, while you’re already away? Take your relaxation to the next level when you visit Tocaloma Spa & Salon. ing good impression, it’s no surprise people keep coming back. Pointe Tapatio not only offers The Falls Water Village, with its terraced waterfalls and an abundance of poolside lounges, but also offers an adult-only pool, visible from the lobby, and several other smaller pools sprawled out over the property, for a total of eight in all. There is also the poolside Cascades Cafe, and The Village Shoppe, providing all poolside needs. Take a dip in the grotto after a game of basketball, courts located next to the main pool, or dare to splash down the 138-foot enclosed waterside. Private cabanas are available with various amenities, including those from the spa, for less than $100 a day. Public guests can enjoy the fun too for just $20 a day, pending availability. No matter what your aquatic desire, the pools at Pointe Tapatio can quench it. Pointe Tapatio Resort understands family and caters to all the members, not just the parental units. Currently rates are as low as $89 per night. It gets even better, through September, Pointe Tapatio is offering the My Stay My Way package. It’s an all-inclusive package, guests pay once and that’s it. It includes the suite, meals, golf and spa credit. It is a great way to have a worry-free vacation. My Stay My Way, designed for a family of four, starts at $319. Not bad considering the site Pointe Tapatio was built on used to be The Old Rock Quarry. I’ll be looking forward to returning to the mountain side bliss that is Pointe Hilton Tapatio Cliffs Resort. Until then I’ll just stare off into the North from time to time in longing. ▲

up to rock the recently (and rather atrociously) re-named Ashley Furniture HomeStore Pavilion (formerly Cricket Wireless Pavilion) in mid-June. To finalize the hair band trifecta, show promoters recruited the New York Dolls to open the show. For music neophytes, the Dolls are a legendary glam rock/punk band from the 1970s, arguably the grandfathers of hair metal. The Dolls are fronted by singer David Johansen (he

of “Hot, Hot, Hot” fame performing as his alter-ego Buster Poindexter). The problem with the Dolls, unfortunately, is they never had a memorable hit song for the public to appreciate. Most people in the crowd just had no clue how important the Dolls were to shaping a generation of music they were about to enjoy later this evening. So they hung around the pavilion drinking beers, waiting for the start of Poison. “They’re big influences on Mötley Crüe,” singer Vince Neil said before the show. “I have David Johansen out there singing. I mean, it’s pretty cool!” The Crüe has tried to avoid touring with fellow hair bands from the '80s, but it could not deny the inevitable, as its fans not only decided on the setlist for the band, but voted for Poison to join the tour. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, Poison caters to the crowd with arena rock staples. The original lineup — singer Bret Michaels, guitarist CC DeVille, drummer Rikki Rockett and bassist Bobby Dall — celebrated the 25th anniversary of the release of band’s first album, “Look What the Cat Dragged In." ▲

unscathed and as popular as ever. And how Motley Crue's Nikki Sixx, Vince Neil and the ever-moribund and gaunt Mick Mars (he plays in his own theater of pain) are still walking the planet is one of life’s true mysteries. We had the pleasure of sitting (well standing mostly) three rows from the stage. So we got a good glimpse at the guys in Mötley Crüe and they were in fine form. The band started the show off with a bang as pyrotechnics blasted with the opening riffs of “Wild Side,” which sent fans scurrying from the beer lines to their seats. Crüe then followed that with the “Saints of Los Angeles” from the 2008 album of the same name. It followed that with a couple Crüe classics, “Live Wire” and “Shout At The Devil.” Neil slung a guitar over his shoulder and

joined the power-chord revelry during “Same Ol’ Situation.” Perhaps my favorite Crüe song, “Primal Scream,” showcased Mars’ guitar virtuosity as he effortlessly shredded the strings with slides, trills and pitch bending. The roadies wheeled out a silver piano for Crüe’s power ballad, “Home Sweet Home.” It gave drummer Tommy Lee ample time to reflect on the band’s accomplishments and thank the crowd, before he banged out the opening chords on the piano. Sixx and Neil would also get the opportunity to thank the crowd during later moments of the show. That cigarette lighter moment was followed by “Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away),” with F.U. by Cee Lo Green chorus.

Not surprisingly, that’s exactly the song with which the band opened its ninesong set. Michaels pranced around the stage and skillfully guided the band through all the favorites and a few covers. Michaels has legions of female fans and he’s endeared himself to a new generation of reality TV addicts (thus Michaels' preshow cruise ship announcement). Poison powered through all its hits effortlessly and the audience ate it up. It hit all the crowd pleasers, finishing up with “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” “Talk Dirty To Me” and “Nothin' But A Good Time.” What this tour proved beyond a shadow of a doubt is that whatever doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. Michaels has toyed with death in recent years, and come away

The night's most spectacular moment came during Lee’s drum solo. His Pearl drum kit was set on a 360-degree rollercoaster that had him spinning side to side and above the stage, as he pounded the skins to a thumping techno track. He then brought up a female fan (a KDKB radio contest winner) to strap in and join him in the fun as he drummed along to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of The Ohio Players' “Love Rollercoaster.” Of course, no Crüe show would be complete without bikini-clad hotties, and they paraded them out over the next four songs: “Looks That Kill,” “Dr. Feelgood,” “Too Young to Fall in Love” and “Ten Seconds to Love.” Of course, that set up the strip club staple, “Girls, Girls, Girls.” For the encores, Crüe busted out a

hybrid of Gary Glitter’s “Rock N Roll Part 2” and ’70s classic from Brownsville Station (and Crüe cover on "Theater of Pain"), “Smokin’ In The Boys Room.” The Crüe changed into black jumpsuits and engaged in Sixx’s favorite activity — spitting fake blood at the crowd — during the show closer, “Kickstart My Heart.” They were joined by stagehands and vixens in a fake blood spray-athon, which doused the crowd with the red stuff … much to their delight. And speaking of Sixx … he meant business all night. With his signature two streaks of black paint firmly planted on both cheeks, the bass player was a commanding presence on stage — spitting, cursing and giving dirty looks to the crowd. Crüe's road show of fire, smoke, girls and loud music was a raucous celebration of the band’s 30-year history of bad behavior and loud music. It delivered what the crowd was craving — a true debaucherous arena rock show packed with all the right punches. ▲

Bring It Cuervo, I’ve Got This Jose Cuervo put the "L" in Loco and the Cuervo Games in Scottsdale

▲ ▲ ▲

... basically Jose Cuervo is letting a bunch of adults drink, responsibly, and then play on an adult-size playground with a chance to win amazing prizes — viva Cuervo!

I SPENT MANY A SATURDAY AFTERNOON as a teenager watching "American Gladiators" on television. I looked on from my parents noisy leather couch as some wannabe athletes took on the behemoths that called themselves gladiators. My favorite game was The Pyramid. The poor contestants would try to make it up a multilevel structure, while the gladiators chased them down and tossed them off of it. I have since wondered if I could do what most of the chumps on the show couldn’t — take on the gladiators.

After my "American Gladiator" phase I got into the WWE, and started watching football on Saturday afternoons, but then, in college I found the greatest thing, a show called "Most Extreme Elimination Challenge," or MXC. This epic show, an English-dubbed version of a Japanese 1980s game show, featured poor SOBs going through mechanized obstacle course challenges, that most of time ended with them being smacked in the head and landing in mud. More recently, a very similar American show called Wipeout debuted. I looked into competing, but never did, thanks to school and work. As it would turn out, however, thanks to school, where I studied writing and journalism (believe it or not), I landed here, in the midst of AZ SAL. It was here that my lifelong dream of competing in goofy sports challenges would be fulfilled. On Saturday, May 7, in the afternoon, I competed in the 2011 CuervoGames, which took place in Scottsdale. I didn’t even have a choice, I received an email a week before from AZ SAL’s editor telling me I had been volunteered to compete. It was as if fate was calling me out. So, just like you are now, I was wondering what the CuervoGames were all about.

6/30/11

12:57 PM

According to an email from Jenna Rathke, spokeswoman for the games, “CuervoGames is a platform of brand communications centered around a multicity tour featuring a series of exhilarating, competitive physical challenges. The games provide entertainment for participants and audiences alike while bringing legal drinking age consumers together. The competition features amateur athletes from local markets who register via Jose Cuervo’s Facebook channel or onsite at the event. The winning team from each local market will win a spot in the national finals to compete for a chance to win the national title.” Right So, basically Jose Cuervo is letting a bunch of adults drink, responsibly, and then

play on an adult-size playground with a chance to win amazing prizes — viva Cuervo! I pulled up to the corner of Stetson Drive and Wells Fargo Avenue, and notice something different. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I was pretty sure there was never a giant rock wall in the parking lot adjacent to the intersection — or a giant stage, pyramid, or tight rope walk looking thing for that matter. The carnival like contraptions were all part of the games, which transformed the everyday Scottsdale street into something pretty familiar, an "Extreme Challenge"/"American Gladiator"style environment, with a twist. Everything, including the games themselves, was inspired by the look of a traditional Mexican

Zocalo, or street festival. There were four games set up: Waterfall Climb, Agave Gauntlet, Barrel Roll and Highwire Harvest. Throughout the day, 40 teams of four competed to place in the top eight and go head to head for a chance to win a trip to the CuervoGames finals. I got to team up with a handful of other media representatives, all of whom were out of towners, to compete as Team Media A.K.A Team Awesome. They came from as far as Florida and the Midwest to check out the event. Without hesitation I took on the Barrel Roll, a 25-foot-high pyramid with a guy at the top chucking inflatable oak barrels at me. Sure enough, all those afternoons in

front of the TV paid off, I tore up that thing like there were free shots at the top. I later found out the free shots were 50 yards behind me at the bar. Coming off an impressive showing at the first challenge, I decided to make the Agave Gauntlet my next victim, an obstacle course complete with a rope swing, climbing wall and waterfall slide. The other two events were the Water Climb, a 30-foot-high rock wall a team member attempted to climb while having gallons of water dumped on her from above. She made a solid effort. Finally there was the Highwire Harvest; I’m not going to lie, this thing gave me the jitters. Our other team member strapped into a harness and proceeded to navigate a 35-foot military

rope course, while trying to pluck as many agave leaves as possible, not to mention she was 30 feet off the ground. There was also a mechanical lime, like a mechanical bull — but a lime. Maxim was there as well, putting on their hometown hottie contest, judged by NFL players Tyler Palko, Darrelle Revis, Adrian Clayborn, Marlin Jackson, Jerome Jackson and Demaryius Thomas. After all the competing and hotness had ended, Joel and Benji Madden from Good Charlotte put on a killer acoustic performance to wrap up the night. I woke the next morning kind of sore with a handful of Jose Cuervo airbrush tattoos all over me. I rolled out of bed, went to my office, pulled out my bucket list, and made a check mark. Thanks Cuervo. ▲

From Camry To Caddy Arizona Cardinals’ tight end Ben Patrick shows off his evolution of cars

While we look forward to seeing Patrick and the rest of Cardinals return to the Super Bowl, you might get lucky and spot him cruising one of his signature rides around Scottsdale...

68 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

WE ALL HAVE DREAMS WHEN WE’RE KIDS. We call them dreams, instead of goals, not because they’re unrealistic, but because we envision ourselves as bigger than life in them. We see ourselves knocking down the door of a burning building and saving a family with a fresh litter of kittens, we simultaneously save three lives in the ER while delivering a baby as the only doctor on call, or we are a 20-time Academy Award-winning thespian about to receive

JULY/AUGUST 2011

numbers 21 and 22 for best actor and best supporting actor in a film we wrote, directed and scored. Are these dreams out there? Yeah they are. Is it crazy to think we can live bigger than life? No it’s not, not at all. Arizona Cardinals tight end Ben Patrick is proof of this. Not only did he work hard on his game at a young age, dig deep and come out the other side as a professional ball player, but he took it to that surreal level when he scored a touchdown

1:06 PM

Page 3

in the big game, Super Bowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers. “It’s pretty much every kid's dream, especially if they’re wanting to play professional football,” said Patrick about his accomplishment. Oddly enough, I scored a touchdown at last year’s Turkey Bowl my friends and I put on every year at the local high school football field, so Patrick and I have that in common. But it’s our shared interest, hell, call it a passion, that really gave us some common ground: cars. That’s where the similarities stop. While I dreamed, like Patrick did, as a teenager, about the 1995 Toyota Supra featured in "The Fast & The Furious," he can now, years later, go ahead and make any of the cars in the franchise’s latest

release his. Ben Patrick, you rock. He already owns a 2008 Range Rover, 2008 Mercedes S550, 2005 Hummer H2 and a 2005 Bentley Continental GT Coupe. Of course Patrick’s road to car glory wasn’t paved with Caddys and Bentleys. First there was the '98 Camry. It was his first car, his father bought it for him his senior year of high school. He drove that puppy all the way through college, finally putting it down with 212,000 miles on the odometer. However, the heat was turned up when draft day came and went. Just before his move to the Valley, Patrick picked up a 2007 Escalade EXT Truck. He just recently traded it in. Since then, Patrick has added to his garage, “(Collecting) is a fun hobby,” Patrick said. “I

like customizing cars, make them look nice and (sometimes) trade them out and start all over again.” Patrick is not the type of man who’s going to rest on his laurels, Patrick keeps his game fresh. His eyes are on the road that lies ahead of him, "I would love to play in the (Super Bowl) again. Maybe get a ring this time. Each year I get better, more productive and reliable. The rest will take care of itself.” While we look forward to seeing Patrick and the rest of Cardinals return to the Super Bowl, you might get lucky and spot him cruising one of his signature rides around Scottsdale or parked at the base of South Mountain where he likes to hike. ▲

Shook Me All Night Long Metalhead rocks out Scottsdale’s Martini Ranch every Sunday Night

▲ ▲ ▲

Bringing energy and laughter to the audience, this is truly what Metalhead is all about. They love what they do for the crowd, and will not stop until Martini Ranch says so.

WHERE ELSE CAN YOU WALK INTO A ROOM FULL OF GIRLS banging their heads to awesome 80’s rock n roll music on a Sunday night? Lined up, front row of the main stage at Oldtown Scottsdale’s Martini Ranch is where it’s at ladies and gentlemen. Not only are you getting exceptional drink specials, girls dancing to your favorite tunes, but one very passionate rock band that loves making this all happen. Wearing spandex, leather and wigs, Metalhead has been playing at Martini Ranch since the summer of 2003. Arousing the crowd with their ingenuous raw humor, the band captures a true-blue, animated 80’s metal crowd. Closed on Sunday nights originally, Martini Ranch opened the doors to a whole new vibe that Scottsdale had never seen before. “We saw there was a void. There was nobody with a band like this that was fun and entertaining,” said lead singer Robert “Lucky” Mason. “The audience listens with their eyes. They’re not all musicians. They have favorite songs they like to sing along to.” Since 1994, Martini Ranch has always been Scottsdale’s most diverse nightclub. The local bar vibe downstairs allows more

JULY/AUGUST 2011

of an intimate casual experience while the Shaker Room upstairs does a great job for providing the club atmosphere. You can count on so many different avenues of fun when coming to this hotspot. Playing every Sunday at Martini Ranch, lead singer Lucky (Robert Mason), bassist Steele Wulff (John Crosby), drummer Tommi Legg (Gary Sanchez), and guitarist GString (John Bronson) entertain and play the “biggest, most fun, no brainer tunes,” that everyone can listen and sing along to. “This club has been amazing to us. They believed in us way back when and gave us our first night. We built it from nothing,” says Mason, who also moonlights as the lead singer of Warrant. “It’s fun and it’s an escape. It’s a good time. Loud and obnoxious.” Making its way from the ground up, Metalhead has impelled a “super mix of people.” It took a while for Old Town to catch on to the excitement, but as soon as locals got the word, it became a “must see.” At first it was bartenders and servers who didn’t have to report to anyone Monday morning. “Their clients got into it, then friends and neighbors, then it became all these people who didn’t mind showing up to work hung over,“ Mason says. Originally from New York (Bronx),

1:07 PM

Page 3

Mason came to Arizona in 1991, to sing for Lynch Mob (post-Dokken project of George Lynch). What does Lucky love about Arizona? “The fact that I never have to shovel snow or cut grass again.” There really is no stopping Metalhead from playing every Sunday night at Martini Ranch. You will hear hair-band favorites like Def Leppard’s Pour Some Sugar on Me and Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. Their charac-

ters capture the true essence of the 80’s genre unlike any band has ever done before. Bringing energy and laughter to the audience, this is truly what Metalhead is all about. They love what they do for the crowd, and will not stop until Martini Ranch says so. Metalhead song list includes Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, Enter Sandman by Metallica, Sweet Child O’ Mine by Guns N’

Roses, and Rock And Roll All Nite by KISS. “I get to wear funny clothes, drink all I want, and yell at people. And they PAY me. I love this job,” says Lucky. Sunday night at Martini Ranch is a fun escape for Metalhead. Maybe it isn’t “PG,” but definitely entertaining, interactive and downright hilarious. According to Lucky, it’s the most fun you can have with your clothes on! ▲

Fitness Fact or Fiction Discover the Truth About Weight Loss

▲ ▲

72 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

Lose 5 pounds a day! Lose weight while you sleep! Rapid weight loss! Sound familiar? These are attention grabbers that lead to emotional purchases by those who desire to change their body. Ads like this are misleading and just plain lies. Mostly all of the quick weight-loss plans have a built-in failure mechanism. They will drain your wallet and leave you feeling worse than when you started. This type of weight loss destroys your metabolism and increases fat storage. Reducing fat requires balanced nutrition and exercise. It's that simple. Weight Loss Truth No.3 Stop eating processed food labeled "healthy," "low-fat," or "low-carb."

If you want to lose fat and keep it off, then it's going to take time. You can safely lose 1-2 pounds of body fat a week, and gain lean muscle at the same time. You didn't put the weight on overnight, and therefore it's not going to magically disappear. True weight loss is fat loss … not muscle, water or bone loss. Losing 5-10 pounds or more a week will lead to a loss of bone, muscle and water. And this will only slow down your metabolism and put extra pressure on the body.

There is no quick fix to fat loss, and fad diets are worthless.

Food labels are misleading and can cause you to gain more fat in the long run. Prepackaged meals and “diet foods” contain chemicals and preservatives your body can't metabolize, which slows down your metabolism. Chemicals that don't leave your body become toxins and get lodged in your fat cells, making fat loss even more difficult.

Weight Loss Truth No. 4

Weight Loss Truth No. 1 You will not lose 5-10 pounds in a week.

Weight Loss Truth No.2

MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE ON A MISSION TO LOSE WEIGHT. What‘s sad is only a small percent will accomplish their goal, and half who succeed will put it right back on in a matter of weeks. There never has been a “magic pill” to losing weight. The truth is weight loss comes with a commitment to making lifestyle changes that involve proper nutrition, exercise and rest. Have you been depriving yourself of food by participating in fad diets or cutting down your calories? If so, you need to know the truth about weight loss.

Whole foods should be the foundation of your healthy and balanced diet.

Challenge yourself by replacing the chemically charged foods in your home with whole foods - that is, foods that are as close to their natural form as possible and that contain flavor and ingredients nature intended. This could mean eating a combination of lean proteins, healthy fats and complex carbs. And let’s not forget about veggies, fruits and legumes that provide the fiber and vitamins we all need. But remember, portion control is important in weight loss. You can consume too much of a good thing!

The truth is weight loss comes with a commitment to making lifestyle changes that involve proper nutrition, exercise and rest.

Weight Loss Truth No. 5 I need to just do cardio to lose weight. While 45 to 90 minutes of cardio, three to five days a week is ideal for weight loss, you also need to perform strength training activities. If your aerobic workouts aren't balanced by a proper dose of strength training, you're missing out on a key component of overall health and fitness. With a regular strength training program, you can reduce your body fat, increase your lean muscle mass and burn calories more efficiently. Incorporate two to three days of strength training per week into a fitness plan. On those days, only do 30 minutes of cardio. Your clothes with fit looser in no time and your energy level will increase as well.

Weight Loss Truth No.6 Weight loss is a lifestyle.

Losing weight properly by reducing body fat and building lean muscle tissue is not a one-time commitment. For successful, for long-term weight loss, you must make permanent changes in your lifestyle and health habits. These are the changes that will help you conquer your weight once and for all. If you ever go back to your old destructive habits, you

will have to work twice as hard to get back to your previous level of fitness and health, which will leave you with even more disappointment. Adopt a healthy eating and exercise lifestyle, and maintain it for the rest of your life. Doing so will keep you fit, energetic, young looking, and it will prevent weight fluctuations and early degenerative diseases. Being healthy and in shape is not genetic, it's by choice. Make your choice today.

Weight Loss Truth No. 7 Don’t blame the genes Some traits are hereditary, but your genes do not have to control your destiny. Just because you have a family history of weight gain does not mean that you need to say goodbye to a chance of achieving your dream body. With proper techniques like balanced nutrition and exercise, you can take your health to the next level and maximize your weight loss by changing your genetic destiny. Rather than allow yourself to become a victim of circumstance, develop an ownership of your life and your choices.

Weight Loss Truths Conclusion Now that you have the weight loss truths, begin to work on them to feel great emotionally and physically. There are a lot of untrue weight loss rumors circulating. However, if you stick to the general rule “if it sounds too good to be true … it probably is,” you’ll know the difference between fact and fiction. Believe in change and a new lifestyle. Stop playing a victim role. Start living your life the way you want it without being dependent on your weight. You can do it! Step by step to achieve your goals.

Beware the Sun How to prevent and treat sunburns

▲ ▲ ▲

... a tan can only develop after enough light and heat energy reaches the skin to inflame it ... much like the turkey skin in the oven — low heat you get a nice golden color, more, and you’ve got a dark burn.

76 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

TO PREVENT AND TREAT SUNBURN CORRECTLY, it’s important to “know thyself.” To do this, first learn how to associate your original skin, eyes and hair coloring with how your untanned skin reacts to sun exposures. For example, people with fairer skin, blue or hazel colored eyes, and blond, brown or red hair typically sunburn easily and tan poorly. People with light brown skin burn minimally and tan easily, while those with medium brown skin rarely burn and tan darkly and easily. People with the darkest skin color from dark brown to black do not perceptibly burn and always tans maximally. Note that no matter what the coloring is everyone can get sunburned but just at different rates. Those with highly sensitive skin — think fair white skin — can burn in as little as 15 to 20 minutes, while those fairskinned people with brown hair will burn in closer to an hour, and more hours for those with much darker skin. Note also that a tan can only develop after enough light and heat energy reaches the skin to inflame it, also called photo damage. This is much like the turkey skin in the oven — low heat you get a nice golden color, more, and you’ve got a dark burn. But remember: golden or not, tan-

JULY/AUGUST 2011

ning bed or sun, there is no such thing as a safe tan. Plus cumulative sun damage through many years from tanning and of course sunburn result first in photoaging (think earlier wrinkles, dry, leathery skin, big pores, discolorations). Even worse, when the photo damage is severe enough, these changes can lead to skin cancers. Still note, regardless of skin type and coloring, the risk for a sunburn is significantly increased: • When one is exposed to sun in tropical regions • At a high altitude — every 300 meters increases UV radiation by 4 percent • Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. — as 65 percent of UV radiation reaches the Earth at these times • When there are clear skies, snow, water and ice as these reflect sunlight • When taking photosensitive drugs like some antibiotics, diabetes, blood pressure heart medicines, antidepressants, sleeping pills, pain killers • When using certain skin care products like the "acids" (be sure to read labels!) • After some skin care procedures like lasers, microdermabrasions or peels

6/30/11

1:12 PM

Page 3

The best way to “treat” sunburn is to prevent it. Sunscreen prevents the light rays from reaching the deeper layers of the skin where reactions can immediately occur to produce sunburn. Rather than looking at the cost of sunscreen, look for sunscreens that have both SPF and PFA (UVA protection factor). UVA light can be even more damaging than UVB; PFA is equally as important as SPF. It’s very important to always apply a sunscreen of at least SPF 30 before going out in the sun. A minimum of 15 is required, but it’s usually better to choose a higher SPF as values can be cut in half or even less by improper application. Reapply after two hours, especially when sweating profusely,

after swimming or playing contact sports. A good rule of thumb is 1 oz (about a shotglass) of sunscreen for the average size body of which the face alone needs 1 full teaspoon. Equally important is to wear clothing and accessories that can keep you in the shade. How to treat sunburn Sunburn skin changes are classic. Once enough energy of the ultraviolet B and the shorter UVA rays of light have penetrated the dermis (the deeper layer of the skin) to destroy tissue, inflammation is induced. As a result, blood vessels become dilated making the tissue turn red. With the dilatation of blood vessels, fluids can leak out into

the extra-vascular tissue, resulting in swelling. This, of course, stretches the skin such that pain is felt, and as more fluids leak into the tissues, painful blisters form. Hence, follow these rules; • Always remember your coloring and your basic responses to sun exposure. • Once you have been exposed to the sun long enough for you to anticipate a sunburn, go and stay indoors immediately • Be sure to drink lots of water to stay hydrated. • Then — the sooner the better and with food in your stomach (and as long as you are not allergic to it) — take two tablets of aspirin (or ibuprofen) to reduce inflammation. Take every 4 hours for about 3 doses.

• Cool the skin with cold compresses. • Wrap the area tight with cool refrigerated towels as this helps prevent more swelling and reduces blisters. • Later, as the skin starts to heal it becomes dry and scaly. Here, Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is my favorite moisturizer. It feels very light on the skin, our studies and use of it in thousands of patients with and without acne show it does not clog up pores. Best of all, its fatty acids help heal the burnt skin naturally. • Do all these early enough: you won’t peel, your skin glows with the VCO
