ULTIMATE PRO BASEBALL CAMP AN AMAZING SPORTS GETAWAY can be found at the Pro Ball Baseball Clinic held in Peoria from Jan. 13-16 at the spring training home of the San Diego Padres. This clinic is open to anyone aged 14 and older who loves baseball and wants to get personalized instruction from professional coaches. Amateur baseball players can refine their skills and get one-on-one instruction from Major League coaches like Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long, Los Angeles Angels pitching coach Mike Butcher and Toronto Blue Jays bench coach Don Wakamatsu. In the words of Glenn Sherlock, bullpen coach of the 2011 NL West Champion Arizona Diamondbacks, “I’ve never seen more Major League coaches in one place than here. This staff is exceptional.” Camp director Dr. John Rubinow left behind a long and successful medical career to pursue his passion for baseball. He created Pro Ball for baseball enthusiasts like himself, who have a true love of the game but never had proper instruction on the fundamentals of the sport. “I started the Pro Ball Baseball Clinic in 2002 because there was no instructional camp for the adult player,” Dr. Rubinow said. “I searched the Internet for adult baseball instruction and came up empty. The Web was filled with fantasy camps and instructional camps for kids, but there was nothing for the adult player who wanted to improve his baseball skills.”

8 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

NOV/DEC 2011

He has attracted participants from all over the country including California, Washington, New York, Massachusetts, Texas, Louisiana and Arizona natives. There have been several participants from Canada and this January, one player from France is participating. What makes the camp an even greater attraction is that it’s now open to teenage (14 and older) players — boy and girls. So dads have the chance to bring their kids for the ultimate father/son or father/daughter experience. Also, high school and college-age players are encouraged to refine their skills. “Over the past few years, guys started bringing their high school and college-aged sons and there began the magical mixture of youth, middle age and the true passion for baseball,” Dr. Rubinow said. “The father-son aspect brought a whole new dimension to the clinic. There is nothing like watching the father-son bond grow on a baseball field. It’s beautiful. I only wished there was something like this camp when I was a kid." The cost of the four-day Fundamentals Clinic is $2,795, which includes hotel (double occupancy) and all meals. Participants are responsible for all travel-related costs. Route 66 Lost & Found ROUTE 66 IS KNOWN AS “AMERICA’S MOST FAMOUS HIGHWAY.” More books and photos have been published on Route 66 than any other highway. One of the best is the new Route 66 Lost & Found: Mother Road Ruins and Relics — The Ultimate Collection, recently published by Voyageur Press. Route 66 Lost & Found is a very unique travel book documenting the famous Mother Road. It features more than 200 restaurants, rest stops, motor courts and more. It’s the ultimate collection of “now and then” photography, as each location has a photo from “back in the day” next to what the locale looks like now. Taking the reader across Route 66 in order, from Illinois to California, the book showcases 400 photos and 50 maps in one value-priced volume. This is truly the ultimate Route 66 collection. Route 66 Lost & Found takes the previous two Lost & Found editions and combines them in one new volume with more than 50 new sites that were not included in the previous two Lost & Found books. Updated maps feature the new sites and each profile is accompanied by archival image of the establishment, a concise capsule history, and a modern photograph depicting the site as it appears today. Author Russell Olsen was born and raised in South Chicago and resides in Los Angeles; he’s made his home on both ends of Route 66. He began exploring and photographing Route 66 in 1995 while driving from his brother's home in Chicago to the west coast. On his first trip down America's Main Street, Olsen shot 27 rolls of film. Annual road trips followed and in 1998 Olsen set out on this project, shortly after he began collecting mid-century postcards depicting classic stops along Route 66. Hollywood, Calif. He is the author and photographer of Voyageur Press' successful Route 66 Lost & Found and Route 66 Lost & Found Volume 2.

Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Rub turkey all over with Canola oil, salt and pepper. Cut away any excess skin from turkey's neck. Place in a roasting pan with a rack, breast side down. Roast for 1 hour, then use tongs to turn breast side up, and roast 45 more minutes, or until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the breast registers 170 degrees F.

Some Dos and Don'ts of Shaving

More Craft Beer Coming to the Valley

DO Keep skin relaxed while shaving. In places where hair grows in different directions and in hard-to-reach areas, such as underarms and the bikini area, try pulling the skin slightly, making it more taut and easier to shave. To avoid razor burn: • For legs: shave in the direction of hair growth • For bikini: go upward against the grain to get a closer shave • For underarm: you can shave upward or downward • Shave at night when possible. Shaving can leave skin very sensitive — so apply lotion afterward and use the night to let the skin recover. Shave in the shower, and wait! Shaving should be your final step before leaving the shower. The warm moisture of a shower makes hairs soft and plump and opens your pores. Don’t be thrifty! Discard shaving blades after four or five uses to avoid ingrown hairs and shaving with a blunt blade.

THE PERFECT GIFT THAT GIVES BACK FOR EVERY TEE THAT AZSAL READERS PURCHASE, Happy First donates a portion to cancer research. What better way to give a gift that gives back this holiday season! Long before it was an apparel company, “Happy First” was a simple greeting conceived by its founder and creator, Debbie Vinyard. It was her way of celebrating: the first day of every month, the first big milestones in life, the first moments of living each day. But she wanted to do more than just wish people well. As a cancer survivor and all-around optimist, she dreamed of creating something that could motivate others to actively identify and pursue personal happiness. And now she shares her positivity and optimism with others with her wonderful clothing line. Happy First tees are available at www.happyfirst.com and retail for $25-$54.

The Brew Crew There’s always something delicious brewing at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant

IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE that Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant was founded 23 years ago. In that time, it has established a name for itself and diners and beer connoisseurs alike know they can count on Gordon Biersch to have well-crafted beers and outstanding food year-round. We visited the location on the North Scottsdale/Phoenix border and discovered what makes Gordon Biersch stand head and shoulders above the crowd. Everything from the décor, the ambiance and the service to the expertly conceived menu and locally brewed beers, it knows its clientele and its branding is top-notch. From the minute we grabbed the wheat stalk handles of the front door, to the moment we rolled back out in to the parking lot with an evening of restaurant history and exceptional food and brew, Gordon Biersch proved to be an experience. General Manager Deena Stevens is at the helm of the Scottsdale restaurant and Executive Chef Phil Dikeman oversees the implementation of the menu. (All the beers at Gordon Biersch are brewed out of the Glendale location.) Phil Dikeman hails from Michigan, where he grew up in Ann Arbor and Midland. Although his father was also an executive chef, Dikeman began his path to chef-dom when he started in shipping and receiving at Garland Resort, a huge establishment in

Lewiston, Mich. Working his way up, he eventually was head chef at Herman’s Dining at the resort. After 10 years, he moved west. “I felt like it was a good time to switch it up,” Dikeman said. Discovering this Gordon Biersch location just before it opened, he was hired in as a sautee chef and worked his way to sous chef. Now as executive chef, Dikeman sees that the menu adheres to the quality standards of the Gordon Biersch name. The menu changes several times per year, along with the seasonal beers. “It’s constantly changing, and we also have a vegetarian menu,” Dikeman explained. We started our Gordon Biersch experience with a selection of appetizers including barbecue pork and Kobe beef sliders, Biersch’s signature garlic fries, tapas and Southwest egg rolls. If you only pick one appetizer, the Southwest egg rolls are it! Sliced open diagonally, they include pulled chicken, black beans, corn, roasted red peppers and pepper jack cheese and are served with a jalapeño ranch dipping sauce. The entire menu is upscale and well thought out. “Everything on our menu is made from scratch,” Dikeman said. Entrees included its most popular dish, lobster and shrimp mac ‘N cheese. “That’s one of our core things,” Dikeman noted. “It’s really good.” And it didn’t last

8:36 AM

Page 3

long on our table. We also tried the fish tacos, which were the best we’ve had anywhere. Dikeman stated that Mahi-mahi is beginning to show signs of overfishing, so Gordon Biersch will be switching out that fish for another, more stable source. We next had the New York strip and Tempura shrimp combo with garlic mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables. The Tempura shrimp was perfection and the New York strip was a bit on the rare side, but that’s how we all liked it. The Gordon Biersch Steak Sauce was a slightly tangy accompaniment that did not overpower. The beers came out with server, Gina Matteo, who along with server and bartender John Yount gave us an overview of all the Gordon Biersch beers. There are five beers made year 'round and a seasonal beer that switches occasionally. First up was Golden Export. A very light beer it was very refreshing and clocks in at a low 124 calories for about a 17 ounce beer. Bravo! The Hefeweizen was an exceptional, unfiltered beer that has a slight taste and aroma of banana. The Czech Pilsner had a little bite and some hint of spice to it. Its most popular beer Marzen, was a very smooth, mediumbodied beer with a semi-sweet finish. Known as a “black beer,” Schwarbier was surprisingly light and smooth and clocked in at less than 125 calories! The seasonal beer was Festbier brewed especially for Octoberfest and was a delicious, somewhat spicy beer. For regulars, there are two fun clubs at Gordon Biersch. First, there is Passport Rewards. The card rewards you for all dollars spent at the brewery restaurant. Rewards include gift cards, private parties

and even vacations. Each card costs $20, but as soon as you become a member, you receive a gift certificate for $20 off at Gordon Biersch. The Stein Club is a fun way to show your allegiance to fine-crafted beers. In addition to getting all the benefits of the Passport Rewards program. Members get additional bonus points, assorted “swag” and their very own personalized glass to put on protected display in the restaurant (complete with a name plate). Membership is limited so ask your closest Gordon Biersch if you are stein-worthy!

Kickin’ it Southwest Style Z'Tejas Southwestern Grill truly is fresh, flavorful and innovative

THIS TRENDY SOUTHWESTERN FUSION EATERY, which originated in downtown Austin, currently has 4 locations in Arizona, with plans to open a fifth location in central Phoenix next summer. The Southwestern cuisine at Z'Tejas is best described as a fusion of Southern, Cajun and Californian specialties. The Southwestern flavors here are big and bold. Z'Tejas is popular for its upscale, yet unpretentious, vibe and imaginative, attractively presented dishes at fair prices. Order your appetizers and drinks, then get ready for the hot, melt-in-yourmouth cornbread that is baked fresh every 30 minutes. Margarita selections abound in a varied drink menu. Margaritas are nearly flawless and there’s a good range of tequilas. My favorite is the Millionaire Margarita: Gran Centenario Reposado Tequila and Grand Marnier with fresh lime juice. Appetizers at Z’Tejas are outstanding. Order more than one — trust me on this. The Grilled-Shrimp and Guacamole Tostada Bites feature herb and pumpkin seed tostada chips topped with fresh guacamole, cilantro pesto marinated grilled shrimp and a dash of chipotle. The shrimp is delicious with a nice smoky flavor. The crunchy chip underneath is a little bonus that compliments the whole dish.

Cast-Iron Skillet Dumplings are wontons filled with spicy shrimp and pork, steamed and then seared. The dumplings are served with a sweet and tangy ginger soy dipping sauce, which makes for a scrumptious combination. The Green Chile Pulled Pork Nachos feature tender pork simmered in green chiles and ancho peppers, topped with black beans, melted jack cheese, homemade guacamole and fresh jalapenos. Z’Tejas is very generous with the pork they pile on the large nacho chips. This is a delicious Tex-Mex dish that is sure to please a party of four. For salad lovers, the Red Chile and Mango Steak Salad is amazing. Mixed greens with Roma tomatoes, tossed with a mango citrus dressing, seared beef tenderloin, topped with bleu cheese and spicy walnuts. Entrees include a delectable chorizostuffed pork tenderloin with Jack cheese and poblano chilies covered with roasted garlic cream sauce and served with mashed potatoes and season vegetables. It’s got a wonderful combination of flavors with a nice kick. The Baked Seafood Enchiladas are mouth-wateringly magnificent. Blackened salmon and tuna, grilled cilantro pesto

shrimp, wild mushrooms and baby spinach, topped with Jack and cotija cheeses, a roasted red pepper sauce and sour cream, served with green chile rice and black beans. For something completely different, try the Voodoo Tuna — a blackened tuna steak seared and topped with peppercorn vinaigrette, spicy soy mustard and pickled ginger, served with green chile rice and seasonal vegetables. It’s a flavorful dish that you won’t find elsewhere. Even if you think you can't eat another bite, try the Cast-Iron Skillet Fresh Peach Cobbler for dessert. with bourbon ginger caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. It’s sinfully indulgent. Overall, the experience is very positive. Z’Tejas is classy yet comfy, sleek yet cozy. And the food is terrific. The joint packs 'em in during lunch, and the vibe is very upbeat. If you’re in the mood for tasty Southwestern cuisine served in large portions, then Z’Tejas is your place. Pablo Francisco ...

Is Puttin’ Arizona comic does state proud with new Comedy Central special By Lynette Carrington

He’ll make you smile. He’ll make you grin. Then you’ll laugh. Then you’ll roar. And just when you think he’s done, comic Pablo Francisco will have you rolling in the aisles. He just doesn’t let up. He’s pure comedic energy that unleashes a no-holds-barred take on the world of celebrity and life in general. Pablo Francisco has come full circle. He hails from Tucson where he was raised by parents of Chilean heritage. “I was born there, raised there and loved it there,” Francisco said. He moved on to television where he wrote for and co-starred in MADtv and honed his comedic timing and acting skills. Even now, he’s not entirely opposed to the idea in starring in a movie, but he does have an affinity for his career in stand-up. A particular favorite of the entire staff of Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine, I was honored to hop on the phone and laugh nearly nonstop for half an hour with Francisco. (My apologies to his publicist. I know I spent more than my allotted time on the phone. He’s charming. I couldn’t help it.) "They Put It Out There!" is debuting Nov. 5 on Comedy Central. Francisco’s latest show follows on the huge success of his previous special, "Ouch!" The skateboard-loving comic brings along his biting wit, his library of celebrity impressions and a nonstop, hourlong take on all things pop culture. Perhaps no one else does it quite the way Francisco does and everyone is fair game. The Kardashians, Arnold Schwarzenegger, the guidos

“Red Bull and Vodka ... I need more energy in my booze!” and guidettes from “Jersey Shore” — no one is safe. He said if all these reality show folks are going to expose every nook and cranny for the universe to see, they have to accept that they’ll be held up for the sake of comedy. As Francisco stated of the title of the show, “I figure I’d call it that because if they are going to put it out there, I’m going to make fun of it! I make fun of it; not it a bad way.” His humor is more like pointing out the obvious, the inconsistencies and the ridiculousness of our society and our media. I asked Francisco if he had somebody or somebodies who were his particularly favorite comedy “targets.” He had a few subjects to offer. “The generation of the '90s,” he stated without skipping a beat. He also gets a lot of material “handed” to him in the way of reality stars, who are so over-the-top and crazy, they provide material to Francisco that practically writes itself. ”I got a beef with all these reality stars ... He Fights Bugs! Pawn Shop Guys! Get Ready for Jersey Idiots!” Francisco rattled it off as if he was reading the marquee of a theater. Francisco says he does pretty well as a comic. “But, I’m not jealous of them,” he said of reality stars. “I’m getting off on watching these guys!” He also can seemingly not get enough of the legal issues of the stars as reported on the show (and website) TMZ, or as Francisco calls it, “Too Many Zeros.” He launched into a funny, yet well-deserved mini-tirade about Schwarzenegger and the fact that he recently became tabloid fodder for dinkering around with his maid. In fact, one of the more funny “riffs” that Francisco does is "Little Tortilla Boy," about Schwarzenegger protecting a stash of tortillas. Throw in the expertly done voices of Schwarzenegger and Don LaFontaine (The Movie Guy) and it is just automatically hilarious.

FAST FACTS

• Pablo Francisco toured with comics Carlos Mencia and Freddy Soto as part of “The Three Amigos” back in 2001 and 2002. • One talent of the Tucson-bred comic is beatboxing, which he incorporates into several parts of his stand-up. • Pablo Francisco has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Last Comic Standing. • Francisco’s MySpace Comedy page is routinely one of the top-visited pages on the site. • The Comedy Central special “Ouch!” remains one of the most-requested shows on Comedy Central.

One of the coolest and most anticipated parts of Francisco’s set is always the celebrity vocal impressions. He flawlessly incorporates the vocal stylings of Michael J. Fox, Gary Busey, Count Dracula, Ozzy Osbourne, Chris Rock, Christopher Walken, Casey Kasem and Keanu Reeves. The audience simply goes nuts over his dead-on impression of Schwarzenegger and Stallone. He’s always coming up with new celeb impressions to add to the collection, but the iconic actors are always what the crowd responds to most. As far as his personal favorite skit, Francisco quickly answers, “Red Bull and Vodka. It’s that one bit I keep doing over and over.” He then quipped, “I need more energy in my booze!” Find Pablo Francisco on My Space, You Tube and at www.PabloFrancisco.com. He is kicking off his newest comedy tour in Ontario, Canada, and making stops in Hartford, Connecticut, Denver, Atlanta and Palm Beach, just to name a few stops. On his jaunt, he'll stop at Stand Up Live, 50 W. Jefferson St., Suite 200, Phoenix from Nov. 23 to Nov. 27. For additional information, visit www.StandUpLive.com or call (480) 719-6100. ▲

BORN AND RAISED IN KALISPELL, MONT., BROCK OSWEILER spent his

days playing basketball and football for Flathead High School, where he was as equally impressive at one as he was the other. In 2007, Osweiler verbally committed to playing basketball at Gonzaga University, a school that has made the NCAA tournament 13 years in a row. In his senior year of high school he won the 2008-2009 Gatorade Player of the Year award for football in Montana. A change of heart led him to Arizona State University and back to the gridiron. After injuries forced Arizona State’s starting quarterback Steven Threet to hang up his cleats at the end of the 2010 season, the job was handed over to Osweiler. The two had competed the previous season for playing time, but the older Threet won the starting job. Threet, however, ended his career early due to long-term concussion symptoms he sustained on the football field. In his first two years behind Threet, Osweiler proved his worth as a quarterback, completing 86 of 164 passes for 1,046 yards with seven touchdowns and only two interceptions. Osweiler has capitalized on the opportunity, leading the Devils to one of their most impressive seasons in recent history. Wins over two top-25 teams this season have set the Devils up to make a late run for a Pac-12 Championship, which would give them an automatic BCS Bowl bid. With Osweiler and many other starters playing in only their junior years at Arizona State, the future for the team looks to be promising. Osweiler took the time to sit down with AZSAL and answer some questions in the middle of their battle for the Pac-12 Championship.

I just want to go out and improve every single day. You can always get better and I think just working on improving is important.

AZSAL: What made you decide to become a Sun Devil? Osweiler: I just really liked Coach [Dennis] Erickson and the coaching staff. It was a great place to be and a great opportunity. AZSAL: After committing to Gonzaga for basketball, what made you change your mind? Do you ever miss basketball? Osweiler: I actually haven’t picked up a basketball in about three years, so I don’t really even think about it. I love the game of football and I felt like coming to Arizona State and playing for the Sun Devils on the gridiron was the best decision for me.

AZSAL AZSAL: What do you think of the new alignments this season, and what differences have it made so far? Osweiler: Other than the additions of Colorado and Utah, I don’t think it has been too different. You know you are going to be playing a tough opponent week in and week out in this conference and you have to be prepared. I don’t really think too much about who is what division, I am just focused on who is next on our schedule and what we have to do to be prepared for that game. AZSAL: What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen from a Sun Devils fan so far in your career? Osweiler: I would have to say the guys dressed up in all black, full body suits for the Missouri game, even though it was over 100 degrees. AZSAL: Do you still talk to Steven Threet, and what kind of friendship do the two of you have? Osweiler: Steven is a student assistant coach for us this season, so I have been working closely with him all year. He has been a tremendous help for me on the sidelines. He can see some things that maybe I am missing out on the field, and since he was a quarterback, he knows what to look for. AZSAL: Who has surprised you the most this season on your team? Osweiler: I would have to say the play of defensive back Alden Darby. He is tied for the Pac-12 lead in interceptions and has really made some huge plays for us on defense. We have had some injuries in the secondary and for a young player like him to step up and play the way he has played; it has really been great for us. AZSAL: With one more season left at Arizona State, what’s the number one thing you want to work on? Osweiler: I just want to go out and improve every single day. You can always get better and I think just working on improving is important. AZSAL: What is your major and what type of job outside of sports would you want in the future? Osweiler: I am a BIS major focusing on sociology and political science. I would love to be a fisherman after I’m done with football. Maybe be on the Bass Pro Tour or have my own fishing TV show.

FAST FACTS

• Osweiler was the first true freshman to start a game at quarterback for Arizona State since Jake Plummer in 1993. • Steven Threet reportedly won the starting quarterback job over Osweiler in 2010 on a coin flip by Coach Dennis Erickson. • At 6’8 and 240 pounds Osweiler is one of the biggest quarterbacks to come through Arizona State’s program. • Osweiler reportedly worked out with the Arizona State basketball team after his sophomore year of football, and was rumored to be trying out for the team, but made the decision to stick with football. • Osweiler is rumored to be a first round caliber draft choice in the NFL after his senior year next season. If so, he would be the first ASU football player to be drafted in the first round since Terrell Suggs in 2003.

AZSAL: What’s your favorite thing about the Valley, outside of sports? Do you miss living in a small town? Osweiler: I love the weather here in Tempe. That would be my favorite thing. I love my hometown of Kalispell and I love to go back and visit, but I am a Tempe guy now. AZSAL: What quarterbacks do you look up to when studying the game? Osweiler: I look at film of Ben Roethlisberger because of his size and his toughness. Our offensive coordinator, Noel Mazzone, coached Philip Rivers at NC State, so I watch a lot of film on Rivers as well. AZSAL: What former Sun Devil impresses you the most and why? Osweiler: Andrew Walter has been a real big influence on me. He has kind of mentored me about the position and playing here. He has been a huge asset for me. AZSAL: After getting playing time on and off the past two years, how big of a difference does knowing you get to start every game make on your preparations? Osweiler: It’s nice to know exactly what I need to do to prepare for game day knowing I am going to be starting. I can take on more of a leadership role as well.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom General Admission (Adults and kids): $37 Location: Vallejo, Calif. (33 miles from San Francisco) This wild northern California theme park combines the high-speed thrills of your typical Six Flags with the entertainment and learning experience that comes from a wildlife park or zoo. It has 12 high-flying thrill rides, from the Boomerang steel coaster which takes you backward through the coaster after you think it is all over, to the brand new SkyScreamer, a 15-story 43-mph swing ride. The thing that sets this park apart is the wildlife adventure that comes with it. With killer whales, tigers, sea lions and elephants, and the chance to swim with dolphins, you would swear you were at a zoo. Six Flags Discovery Kingdom is perfect for anyone who has kids who want to see and play with animals but also wants to satisfy their own desires with some highflying Six Flags rollercoasters.

Six Flags Magic Mountain

Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

General Admission (Adults and kids): $37 Location: Valencia, Calif. (35 miles from Los Angeles)

All-day unlimited rides wristband: $29.95 Location: Santa Cruz, Calif. (35 miles from San Jose)

This is arguably the best adrenaline rush on the planet. Magic Mountain holds the title for the most rollercoasters at any theme park in the world, and even if you've been before, there are three new extreme rollercoasters that just opened in 2011. With 18 highflying coasters, if you want to be twisted, thrown, twirled, hung upside down and sent for the ride of your life, this is the place to go. Don’t be worried about taking the kids here either; all of the Six Flags parks are great at accommodating children, too. Magic Mountain has tons of children’s rides and shows, plus your favorite Looney Toons characters can be found wandering the park all day for pictures and high fives. The biggest negative about this park is the long lines, but they are worth the wait once you get on and experience one of the best rollercoasters in the country. If you really don’t like long lines, you can purchase a “Flash Pass” for $41 (on top of your general admission) to get a front-of-the-line pass for your favorite rides. Another plus is Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, a water park attached to Magic Mountain that allows for just as many thrills mixed with water to escape the heat of a summer day. It’s simple really; Six Flags Magic Mountain is perfect for the adrenaline junkie that wants to go all out and say he's mastered one of the greatest theme parks in the world.

This on-the-beach theme park is perfect for anyone who wants a cheaper alternative to the rest of the parks, and enjoys his time on the beach. You can bring the kids or a group of friends and spend the day going from the water to the rides. On Wednesday nights during the summer they have free movies on the beach, where you are not obligated to spend any money and can just relax and watch a movie on the beach with a great crowd. You can either pay $5 a ride or buy an all-day wristband if you want to explore all the thrills of their rides on any day the park is open. They stand strong against some of the greatest coasters, adding an extra thrill with great views of the ocean as you climb to the top. Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is perfect for anyone who wants to go to a theme park, but also wants to spend a day at the beach but maybe doesn’t have a ton of time to spend in California.

Universal Studios Hollywood Buy a one-day general admission pass, get one free: $77 (Kids $69) Location: Universal City, Calif. (10 miles from Los Angeles) Ever wonder what they do with props and sets from classic movies like "Jaws," "War of the Worlds" and "Psycho"? Wish you could travel the streets of Wisteria Lane from "Desperate Housewives"? You can at Universal Studios. On their studio tour you get to drive through set after set of your favorite movies and TV shows, and because they’re still making hit movies and TV shows there is always something new to experience. This year's new adventure is King Kong 360 in 3-D. This adventure takes you into a struggle between a T-Rex and King Kong as they battle it out for the title of Greatest Monster on Earth. This, mixed with thrilling rides like The Mummy, Terminator and Jurassic Park, makes this the greatest place on Earth, (for adults). Universal Studios Hollywood is perfect for anyone who loves movies, and the thrill of Hollywood action mixed with a little adventure.

Knott’s Berry Farm One-day general admission: $47 (Kids/seniors $25) Location: Buena Park, Calif. (Six miles from Anaheim) The first theme park in America, there’s a reason people started copying Knott’s Berry Farm. The park has the same thrills as Six Flags — six high-flying rollercoasters and a few more not so aggressive coasters that are great for attracting the kids and bringing them back as they grow up. The best part about Knott’s Berry is that you get the same adrenaline rush, but there are no two-hour lines like there are at some of the other parks across California. If you go during the week most of the lines are rather short and even the best coasters only get up to 45 minutes or an hour's wait. On a nice summer day there are also some great water rides to go along with the coasters, for a quick cool down. Log rides and the Big Foot Rapids keep you cool while adding some excitement. Don’t be fooled, this classic isn’t out of date; over the years they’ve added new rides and updated the old ones. Classic wooden rollercoasters are a must if you’re in need of an adrenaline rush and Knott’s Berry Farm is perfect for the entire family.

Of course, who could forget watching Shamu dance through and above the water, in one of the longest running and greatest shows you can see live? What needs to be said about this great American classic? Disneyland is more than a theme park, it is an entire mini city of its own, filled with adventure and fun for the entire family. If you’ve never been then you should really make the trip to Disneyland, especially if you have children. It really is the happiest place on Earth for the little ones, while adding a little bit of adventure and thrill for the adults with California Adventures right next door. From Splash Mountain to Space Mountain, Indiana Jones to Pirates of the Caribbean, this is the place to go. Take a break from the rides and sit down with Nemo and Crush, join the Jedi Training Camp, watch Mickey’s “soundsational” parade or walk through Downtown Disney. Enjoy the nights while the sky lights up with magic and fireworks, and don’t forget to explore the shops and stores to take home a little piece of the adventure. Next door is California Adventure, a theme park dedicated to adults who wish to be thrilled with rollercoasters and one of the best haunted houses of all time. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is one of the scariest haunted houses in the country, which ends with a devastating drop that will leave you breathless. ★ Tearin’ Air Two-time world championship racing pilot KIRBY CHAMBLISS talks to AZSAL about his life of 300 mph nose dives and death defying barrel rolls

By Amanda Ventura Photos by Marcos Ferro

KIRBY CHAMBLISS CAN CARTWHEEL A PLANE, tail over nose, six times in a row like it's Sunday breakfast. He's a two-time world champion racing pilot and five-time national champion in aerobatic flight. His plane, the Zivko Edge 540, can roll one and half times in a second. He is sponsored by Red Bull and there's no question why. The 52-year-old pilot puts his experience into perspective by asking, "Do you like roller coasters?" A very fast roller coaster moves between 3 to 3.5 Gs, short for gravity-force, a measurement of weight on an object as affected by the acceleration of that object. When Chambliss is in his plane, he moves in a spectrum of -8 and +10 Gs. The risk of passing out while pushing the g-force in either direction is directly proportional. "There's nothing like the ground rushing up at you 300 miles an hour," he says. There's nothing unbelievable about that statement. However, it takes a certain kind of appreciation for that feeling to log 5,000 hours doing stunts like a nose dive at 300 miles per hour. Chambliss — who was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, but now lives at the Flying Crown Ranch between Tucson and Phoenix — has been flying since he was 13 and hasn't stopped for 39 years (although he insists he's still 26 years old) and through his various jobs as a pilot and training, he's logged 26,000 hours of flying time, which is equivalent to being airborne for three years. "For me [being] in the airplane is kind of like running down the road with my hands out; The wings are just kind of an extension of my body," he says. He was 21 years old when he first became interested in aerobatics. At the time, Chambliss was preparing to fly

“There’s nothing like the ground rushing up at you 300 miles an hour.”

commercial jets for Southwest Airlines and took aerobatic training as a precaution in case a commercial liner ever turned upside down. "I was already getting bored with straight-level flying," he says. "And what [aerobatic lessons] did was change my whole focus in life. That's all I wanted to do. I still had to fly with all the airlines to support my new habit." At 24, he became the youngest commercial pilot at Southwest Airlines and yet he persistently perfected his aerobatic skills. While winning championships and races were lucrative means to support his habit, the expenses didn't make for the most comfortable lifestyle. After flying competitively for more than 20 years, Chambliss would receive the sponsorship he so badly needed if he were to take his team to the next level. It was eight years ago, and after Chambliss won the U.S. National Aerobatic Championships five times as well as the Men's Free Program Championships, Red Bull approached Chambliss with a sponsorship offer. This year, Team Chambliss has done nearly 30 air show events, and it isn't cheap to run a team of stunt and race pilots. Racing planes themselves require $450,000 to start off with, Chambliss says. Then there is maintenance and insurance and, of course, fuel. One airplane burns over 30 gallons of fuel per hour at about $7 to $8 a gallon. Team Chambliss is comprised of three crew members that run nine airplanes, four of which are aerobatic and one support plane that has a jet engine in it. Flight season is nearly year 'round, so when the team isn't racing or flying in air shows its home making repairs or working to improve the airplanes' performances until about February. Chambliss doesn't name his planes nor is he superstitious. He has, however, flown his Zivko Edge 540 since he became its test pilot in 1993. It's the craft he's used most during his career, although it's been modified over the years. While most kids dream of jobs they'll likely never seriously pursue, Chambliss knew at a young age he wanted to be a pilot and instead spent his time trying to figure out how to get into the cockpit. Luckily, his dad was a private pilot. "We didn't have a lot of money," he says. "But, you could build your own airplane back then for a lot less than it'd be to buy a car."

AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE 45

And so that's what Chambliss did. After working a few odd-end jobs, Chambliss bought his first plane at 19 years old. It was one he and his dad built six years prior out of sheet metal. It had since been sold and re-sold a few times and Chambliss recently bought the airplane back with hopes he and his 6-year-old daughter (who has toured with Chambliss and his wife, Kellie, since she was 6 weeks old and can already "fly") will restore it together when she's old enough. Until then, the craft's wings are suspended in his personal hangar outside his home in Southern Arizona. Because Chambliss is exposed to an 18-G spectrum while flying, keeping himself physically fit is an important part of his job. When going +10 Gs, he says, a 200-pound person begins to feel like his body weighs 2,000 pounds. Negative 8 Gs, he says, is like having 1,600 pounds of pressure against the seatbelt (he wears double harnesses), trying to eject him from the airplane. Aerobatic pilots are always fighting G-LOC, which is G-induced loss of consciousness. Flying in positive G ranges causes a huge amount of blood to rush from the pilot's head,

“It’s a very dangerous business, all you can do is keep it from happening to you ... You die and you don’t. I’ve been very fortunate.”

46 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

NOV/DEC 2011

Racing, which includes some aerobatic work, has risks of its own as well. Planes are moving 200 to 250 miles per hours a few feet above water while the pilot maneuvers around gates. Chambliss, who recently performed air shows in the Southwest is on tour in Mexico. He's two years into a three-year leave with Southwest Airlines and will have to decide whether he'll go back to flying commercially or request another extension of his leave. "I love what I'm doing and I hope to be doing it for a long time," is all he says on whether he may ask for an extension. ▲

meaning he or she needs to strain his or her neck muscles to slow the blood flow in the process of the trick. Aerobatic pilots like Chambliss, therefore, must maintain their G-tolerance by flying on a very consistent basis. “If I stop flying aerobatics for more than a week, then it's like it's already over for me," Chambliss says. "It takes two to three weeks to build my G-tolerance back up." Having a few close calls early on in his career, Chambliss mentions quickly that he's lost, literally, hundreds of friends. "It's a very dangerous business," he says. "All you can do is keep it from happening to you. I've been very fortunate and learned from my mistakes. You live and you learn. You die and you don't. I've been very fortunate."

Taste. Chandler’s Culinary Festival 2011 Food and dining event draws fans and foodies alike

▲ ▲ ▲

Taste Chandler is all about the best in food and spirits and we’ve learned from previous Taste events to go hungry!

THE YEAR 2011 WAS A BANNER ONE for Taste. Chandler’s Culinary Festival. All the best and brightest on Chandler’s culinary scene were on hand to dazzle with generous samples and to meet and greet their fans and entice new customers. A portion of the proceeds from Taste Chandler went to the Downtown Chandler Community Foundation, a not-for-profit charity . Taste Chandler is all about the best in food and spirits and we’ve learned from previous Taste events to go hungry! There was a lot of food this year. Right inside the entrance was Crowne Plaza San Marcos Golf Resort. Their braised short ribs were tender and generous in size and their N’awlins shrimp had just a bit of kick to them. With

Crowne Plaza as the first stop, the bar was set high for all the other food vendors. Next up was Yoli’s Café. One of the biggest samples of the festival, they dished up very generously sized sandwiches piled high with Luau barbecue pork topped with jalapeno slaw. If Crowne Plaza set the bar high, Yoli’s may have bumped it that much higher. The sandwich was a festival standout and the booth had long lines all day. Coach & Willie’s is new to Chandler, open now at the prime corner of Arizona Avenue and Boston. It made a strong showing at Taste Chandler with its lobster bisque, which rivals even the best bisques we’ve had in the past. NYPD Pizza served up garlic knots and white spinach and cheese pizzas, while The Sushi Room presented spicy tuna and crab rolls. Always a festival favorite, San Tan Brewery poured its signature Hefeweizen and Devil’s Ale beer along with Beer Can Chicken Mole Tacos and Cochinita Pork Pibil Tacos. Kudos to San Tan for serving beer and food — not an easy undertaking. Dos Gringos is always a festival favorite and this year it did not disappoint. It served Shrimp Ceviche and Green Chile Chicken Dip. De-lish! Other participants included Latitude Eight Thai Grill, Kokopelli Winery & Bistro,

Majerle’s (we loved its tangy/spicy boneless chicken wings), Paletas Betty, The Keg Steakhouse & Bar, and Vine Expressions. My personal favorite of the entire Taste Chandler fest was Shimogamo, who had outstanding sushi, plus a beautiful fish tank and ladies in kimonos serving up samples. They deserved an A+ for food and presentation. This year marked the exciting addition of Taste Experience Lounges. Three distinctly themed lounges tucked inside of cooled tents included craft beer, wine and spirits. Through a partnership with Alliance Beverage, some unique spirits were served up including Southern Comfort Fiery Pepper, Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey, Snap Dragon, Chalone Vineyard, Rosenblum Cellers, Cherry on Top and Finlandia Vodka of Finland. Finlandia Vodka was our group’s favorite with an array of flavored vodkas including cranberry, tangerine, mango, lime, grapefruit and raspberry. The Experience Lounges also included cooking demonstrations, educational classes and themed music. As always, Discount Cab was on hand as an ever-present reminder to drink

responsibly and never drink and drive. Each year, it comes armed with its signature neon green ballpoint click pens and other promotional items; its message is not one of judgment, it’s one of reason. If you’ve had too much to drink, Discount Cab is there for you. Taste. Chandler is a competition in each food category. Restaurants were judged on overall taste, originality and presentation of the dish as well as booth appearance and creativity. This year’s winners were: Overall Best of Taste. Chandler’s Culinary Festival: Yoli’s Café. Honorable mention for superior flavor went to AJ’s Café and Coach & Willie’s.

There Goes My Hero Frontman Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are saving rock ‘n’ roll one show at a time ▲ ▲ ▲

The night brought enough head-banging, air pounding, and chord-crunching to keep the packed house in bliss.

NOV/DEC 2011

DAVE GROHL IS ONE BADASS ROCK STAR. And his band, the Foo Fighters, remains one of the last bastions of pure, unadulterated rock ‘n’ roll in the world. Touring in support of their seventh studio album, “Wasting Light,” the Foo Fighters rocked a sold-out US Airways Center in Phoenix in mid-October. Grohl — the consummate performer, entertainer and showman — led the Foo Fighters through a 23-song set of blistering rock ‘n’ roll. The night brought enough head-banging, air pounding and chord-crunching to keep the packed house in bliss. The Foos are a great live band. Guitarist Pat Smear deftly cranked out power chords, drummer Taylor Hawkins hammered the skins, while bassist Nate Mendel, guitarist Chris Shiflett and touring keyboardist Rami Jaffee kept everything tight and under control. But the main attraction was definitely Grohl. With his grunge Fu Manchu and powder-blue Gibson guitar, he’s just so … well … cool. Grohl is such a dominant and mesmerizing presence on stage, it’s difficult to pay attention to what the other five performers are doing. Grohl shrieked, howled and screamed his way from the very start through a set

FAST FACTS

• Over the course of the band’s career, three of the Foo Fighters’ albums have won Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album, and all six albums have been nominated. The band’s seventh studio album, “Wasting Light”, was released in 2011. • The band got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as Foo Fighters. • In November 1994, Grohl took a brief turn as drummer with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, including a memorable performance on “Saturday Night Live.” Petty asked him to join permanently, but Grohl declined the invitation to form the Foo Fighters. • With the exception of a single guitar part on “XStatic” played by Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs, Grohl performed all of the instruments himself on the band’s debut album, “Foo Fighters.”

f-bombs throughout the performance. “We don’t play those f-ing two hour shows your favorite band plays. Let’s try and get it to three tonight.” The standing-only crowd went bonkers, and Grohl gave them mad props. “Ladies and gentleman, I think this is the loudest audience on the entire tour.” The band turned up the crunch and distortion as the show continued, with Grohl giving every ounce of guttural grit to songs like “Arlandria” and “Breakout.” And just when the crowd thought the energy level couldn’t get any higher, Grohl fueled the frenzy with some extra octane, picking things up with a blistering solo trade-off during “Monkey Wrench,” one of the band’s most popular numbers. After a short and raucous break , Grohl triumphantly returned to the stage to play an extended, six-song encore. Armed with nothing but an acoustic guitar, he serenaded the audience with solo performances of “Wheels” and “Best of You” before the rest of the band joined him for an engrossing take on the 2002 hit, “Times Like These.” The band squeezed in one more track from “Wasting Light,” “Dear Rosemary,” before busting into Tom Petty’s classic “Breakdown.” Two hours and 45 minutes later, the show’s closer, “Everlong,” left no Foo fan unfulfilled. ▲

that lasted an intense 3 hours and included both monster hits such as “Learn to Fly” and new singles off “Wasting Light.” Grohl has rock ‘n’ roll street cred. He was a considerable force behind Nirvana’s drum kit, and he gave the band its monstrous backbone, propelling the grunge forefathers forward like no other drummer had done before. After the untimely demise of Kurt Cobain in 1994 and dissolution of Nirvana, Grohl formed Foo Fighters and positioned himself as lead singer. Favoring metal over Nirvana’s punk roots, but keeping the steely pop-hook center intact, the Foo Fighters became one of the most dependable rock bands on the planet, and today, Grohl is practically a guitar god. The show kicked off with a 25-minute hello that included “Bridge Burning,” a frenetic number off the latest album containing the trademark hard-rock guitar leads that made the Foo Fighters a household name. This gave way to “Rope,” one of the more popular newer songs, “The Pretender” (off the band’s 2007 album “Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace,” and Foos’ classics “My Hero” (a tribute to Cobain) and “Learn to Fly.” Grohl was assisted in interacting with the masses thanks to an elaborate stage setup that included a catwalk feeding directly into the general admission crowd. His presence was magnified by LED lighting at his feet, 12 gigantic screens hovering above and a well-choreographed light show. The big bang opener led to a breather and a warning: “It’s gonna be a long f-ing night,” said Grohl, who dropped plenty of

Arizona Theatre Company Shines for 2011-2012 Season Sherlock Holmes Takes Investigation to a Murderous Level

▲ ▲ ▲

David Ira Goldstein again asserts his brilliance as a visionary and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to theater.

ONCE AGAIN, ARIZONA THEATRE COMPANY has knocked one out of the ballpark. In the 2011-2012 season, Arizona Theatre Company has incorporated a unique selection of plays and musicals that are classics, edgy newcomers and adaptations from films. The 45th anniversary season's debut performance was "Sherlock Holmes and The Adventure of the Suicide Club."

In his 20th year as artistic director for Arizona Theatre Company, David Ira Goldstein again asserts his brilliance as a visionary and a force to be reckoned with when it comes to theater. In the production of "Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club," Goldstein served as director and brought out the best performances in his actors. Set in London in 1914, Dr. Watson finds his relationship with the famed detective strained as Holmes is in a depressed and solitary funk. Doing not much more than sulking in his home on his settee, Holmes asserts that there is nothing left that interests him in life. He decides to seek out a membership of an ultra-exclusive and highly questionable “social” club where brotherhood, privacy, anonymity and murder are the order of the day. As Sherlock Holmes, Remi Sandri portrays the beloved classic character to a "T" with just the right amount of inquisitiveness and without pandering to the audience. Replete with a colorful cast of internationally based characters, we are invited along as Holmes unravels the mystery of how some members of the Suicide Club continue to defy the law of averages to survive. Was it suicide? Was it suicide by

9:28 AM

Page 3

second party or something entirely more devious? The end of the first act literally leaves the audience hanging. As alliances are tested and clues become more intriguing, the Suicide Club continues to lose members. As the facilitator of the Suicide Club, the Club Secretary increasingly falls under suspicion. A subtle, yet diabolical portrayal of the Club Secretary by actress Celeste Ciulla brought forth a Marlene Dietrich-esque character coupled with maniacal undertones. The part of Dr. Watson was played by the incomparable and seasoned actor Jeff Steitzer. His booming command of the stage also embraced a lovable, befuddled quality that gave a very likable aspect to his character portrayal. In the end, Sherlock Holmes solves the case, yet what transpires in the play becomes the catalyst for another realworld event. The brilliant play was written by Jeffrey Hatcher and includes characters from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s "Sherlock Holmes." In this instance, the characters were mingled with an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s "The Suicide Club."

The remainder of the Arizona Theatre Company’s season includes "The God of Carnage" (Tony Award-winning comedy for Best Play 2009) and "Daddy Long Legs," a musical about a young girl’s Cinderella-esque journey to womanhood (from the Tony Award-winning director of "Les Miserables" and "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby"). The New Year is ushered in with the stage adaptation of "Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps," a mix of spy intrigue, Hitchcock-ian suspense and a smattering

of Monty Python. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s "The Great Gatsby," with its romantic interpretation of the 1920s next graces the home stage at Herberger Theater. Rounding out the season is the winner of six 2010 Tony Awards, including Best Play, "Red," and its unique exploration of art and the motivations of the mind of an artist. For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.ArizonaTheatre.org, or call (602) 256-6995. Herberger Theater Center is located at 222 E. Monroe, across the street from The Arizona Center. ▲

Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre Goes Pink Legally Blonde The Musical Is Like, Omigod You Guys!

Elle Woods was played brilliantly by Maria Fernandes who brought her own lovable take on the character without overthinking it.

BROADWAY PALM DINNER THEATRE JUST PRESENTED its 74th production and it was like, totally awesome. "Legally Blonde the Musical" was all the pink you would expect, a fun bunch of original songs, a creative slew of costume changes and yes, an adorable little Chihuahua. "Legally Blonde" was the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon and Luke Wilson. In the stage adaptation, we follow

the focus-challenged, yet savvy fashoinista Elle Woods as her heart is dashed by her boyfriend Warner just as she was anticipating his proposal. Told she was not “serious” enough to be a “Jackie,” she is more of a “Marilyn.” Undaunted, she follows Warner as he heads off to Harvard Law with the intent of winning him back and becoming the “Jackie” he wants. Elle Woods was played brilliantly by Maria Fernandes who brought her own lovable take on the character without overthinking it. In additional to the singing and dancing, undoubtedly one of the challenges the actress must have faced was the many wardrobe changes (special kudos to Costume Designer Mary Atkinson who did an outstanding job with the entire production). Each performance the role of Bruiser was portrayed by a Chihuahua pup from a local rescue. Musical numbers included the very catchy, “Omigod You Guys,” “Serious,” “Blood in the Water,” “Positive” and “Bend and Snap,” among others. In a clever marketing maneuver, Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre had an entire drink menu named after the various songs in the play. It worked. I bought two. And “Seriously?” “Like Omigod” they were fantastic. A special

With the help of Beautician Paulette, Elle becomes more confident and excels at Harvard Law while beginning a new friendship with instructor Emmett. Elle eventually sees Warner as a losing law student, graduates Harvard and gets her Emmett. (Of note, the UPS Delivery Man is only in just a few scenes and nearly brings the house down when he arrives at Paulette’s salon with a poster tube and announces, “I have a PACKAGE!”) The rest of the season includes a fun variety of favorites and new performances. Cherished holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol" plays Nov. 17 through Dec. 25, "Brigadoon" Dec. 30 through Feb. 11, "Me and My Girl" Feb. 16 through April 8 and "A

...within the four doors and under the hood of the refined Chevrolet Cruze is a deviant little street machine in disguise.

64 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

NOV/DEC 2011

IN ORDER TO BE THE BEST, you have to know what the best is. In fact, that should be the new AZSAL motto. That’s all we do around here at the magazine, bring you — the reader — the best there is. Having said that, I know what you’re thinking, I thought the same thing at first, “So, what’s with the funky little four door?” I know this childfriendly ride may not scream ferocity like its muscled-up cousins, or have the initial sex appeal of its sporty siblings, but within the four doors and under the hood of the refined Chevrolet Cruze is a deviant little street machine in disguise.

Late on a Sunday morning I strolled into Freeway Chevrolet. I took in a breath of that fresh car smell that lingers timelessly in showrooms. All the players were on deck for the weekend, Corvette, Camaro, and the new Volt were all shines and shimmers, just asking to be taken home, or at least on test drive. I headed to the back where I met with Mike Preville, Internet manager, who welcomed me and showed me to my ride. The Chevy Cruze is a car that comes to life the closer you get to it. All the specific lines and details begin to show — especially with the Arizona sun beating down, illuminating every bit of the dark candy apple red Cruze parked in front of me. The sweeping headlamps stood out the most, like a pair of big enticing eyes, they sweep back and around the beveled hood and above the cleverly sculpted fenders. Yes, cleverly, while the Cruze looks as good from the back as it does from the front, the truth about these eye grabbing lines is that they improve the car’s aerodynamics, optimizing fuel efficiency — 36 mpg highway to be exact. The Cruze Eco even has an automatic front air dam that adjusts while driving to correct airflow and maximize fuel up to 42 mpg. The specific Cruze I was about to roll out was a 2012 2LT. It packed a 1.4-liter

while maintaining plenty of comfort. It’s equipped with cruise control, single-disc CD player, power locks, windows, and mirrors, and automatic headlights. XM radio is available, and a six- month trial of OnStar comes with the Cruze. Compared to similar models, the Cruze has massive amounts of leg room and cargo space — because you like to stretch your legs and relax after 18 holes, knowing you didn’t snap your driver trying to fit the clubs in the trunk. I’m a meat and potatoes kind of guy, so all the hot technology was lost on me. The turn-by-turn touch screen navigation, steering wheel controlled audio and cruise control, the Bluetooth Wireless compatibility, rear park assist — sounds nice. I did understand Pioneer Premium Audio System, 250watts through 9-speakers worth. The Cruze handles much like its dare-

devil kin. I pushed the Cruze on the same drive I took the 2012 Corvette Coupe on. The Cruze dropped into the same turns with its own brand of authority, backed by rack-mounted electric per steering and a race-proven Z-link rear suspension. I did a little bobbing and weaving on the I-10, playing with the 6-speed manumatic transmission. Slap the stick down a couple gears on the street or on the freeway and this little beast drops tail and takes off. I did have the relief of knowing that should street karma take me out, I had 10 airbags packed in all around me — combined with a high-strength steel safety cage and roof crush resistance that outperforms requirements, it’s no wonder Cruze is the best safety rated car in its class. “[Cruze] was over in Europe for six years before it came to the United States, under the Daewoo platform,” Mike told me.

DOHC (duel overhead camshaft) turbo engine, pushing out 138 hp. I activated the keyless entry, sat down in the leather driver's chair, and fired up the motor with the push of a button. A low rumble filled the cab. I was honestly surprised how tough the Cruze sounded as Mike and I made our way to from the lot to the street. While the base model LS has a little bit bigger engine, the LT models sport an extra 10 pounds of torque, making the car, “Very very peppy,” as how Mike put it. He also explained the reasonably priced RS package, it’s around $700. “[The package] adds stiffer suspension, grippier tires, for that sporty feeling,” Mike told me. “[The Cruze] is pretty powerful for a one-point-four liter.” The RS package is available for LT, 2LT, and LTZ models. The interior of the Cruze is generous

After a couple laps I was a believer. I would absolutely love to take the Arizona streets by storm in a sick sports car, and tear up asphalt like no one’s business with some muscle, but I’d also like to spend less than a paycheck on gas, and when street karma comes a knocking, coming home to the wife and kids in one piece would be great too — sign me up for a Cruze. I felt kind of silly when I asked Mike how the Cruze was selling. “We’ve been selling them by the boat load,” he told me with great big smile. Like I said, when your with the best you better know it — did I mention I’m smiling too.

Back to Basics Discussing health and nutritional supplements with Dr. Mayur M. Dev

▲ ▲

Arizona Sports & Lifestyle (AZSAL): Why do we need to take supplements? Dr. Dev: In the world we live in, supplementation is essential to maintaining proper health and well-being. Because it is difficult to plan our meals in advance to guarantee a well-balanced, nutritious menu, taking a supplement that contains an assortment of vitamins and minerals may be advisable for healthy adults. Consumption of supplements should be seen more as an “insurance policy” rather than a replacement for eating nutrient-rich foods. Various dietary patterns may exclude essential nutrients so consumers need to find a nutrient substitute. Lactose-intolerant individuals avoid dairy-based calcium sources and seek out nondairy sources of calcium to fill their nutrient needs. However, not every fortified food source of calcium is easily absorbed. Dietary supplements offer many calcium options and several are highly bioavailable. Individuals who avoid red meats are highly at risk for iron and vitamin B12 deficiencies. Dietary supplements fill that need. AZSAL: Don’t we get all of our nutrients from our diet? Dr. Dev: In a perfect world, consumers choose — or grow — their healthiest foods and make their own meals while freshly preparing foods at each meal. Consumers today have to choose between

time, know-how, and costs when preparing nourishment for their own as well as their family’s health. The economic and timeconstrained reality of today leaves many consumers shy on their nutrient needs if not close to deficient. With the omission of health and cooking classes from many school curriculums, many individuals do not learn how to prepare inexpensive and healthy foods that are rich in nutrients. The substitution of processed foods for home-cooked meals creates more nutrient gaps. Plant foods naturally contain a variety of nutrients; however, many of the healthful parts such as rinds or pulp are removed through processing. This lowers fiber intake — a key nutrient for proper digestive support. In the past few decades, Americans have been consuming more refined grains and a limited variety of fruits and vegetables. This puts individuals

at greater risk of nutrient deficiencies for not only fiber, but minerals such as zinc and selenium as well as vitamins A or K. Individuals on special diets (vegetarians, vegans, gluten free, fad diets) also may require certain supplements. Choosing a balanced diet with foods from each food group will help ensure nutritional adequacy in our diets. AZSAL: If you could only take three supplements, what would those be? And why? Dr. Dev: One, a multivitamin-mineral at 100 percent of the daily value for each nutrient. These provide a foundation or insurance policy against rushed lunch choices eaten at the word desk, poorly planned dinner meals and faddish diet trends. Especially those products that contain vitamin D which has gained even more favor in research and health professional studies.

Vitamin D. The growing research with this nutrient across all age groups is astounding. ... today researchers are finding incredible scientific support for health maintenance of the breast, prostate and lower digestive tract. Two, fish oil as a source of DHA and EPA. Our body cannot manufacture these special types of omega-3 fatty acids on its own. Americans are consuming far more omega-6 fatty acids (from soybean and corn oil) than omega-3 fatty acids. To offset this unhealthy balance, a supplement with 1,000 mg of fish oil a day, with at least 200 mg of DHA and 200 mg of EPA. Omega 6 causes inflammation in the body but a sufficient amount of omega 3 can control this effect. Shifting the balance to favor more omega-3 fatty acids also

supports better cardiovascular functioning. And three, calcium with vitamin D. Endless days working indoors or long business trips that leave less time for solid weight training mean I may not get the necessary vitamin D primarily available from sunshine for optimal health. Combined with an aging body that tolerates less lactose and dairy foods, I find I am consuming less calcium than I should. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium so I want to help my system out in meeting the 1,000 mg of calcium it needs daily to build a strong skeletal system. AZSAL: What is the one “breakout” nutrient that will be very popular in 2012? Dr. Dev: Vitamin D. The growing research with this nutrient across all age groups is astounding. While this fat-soluble vitamin was once thought to be needed in lower quantities for calcium metabolism and hormone production, today researchers are finding incredible scientific support for health maintenance of the breast, prostate and lower digestive tract. AZSAL: We’re in the sun a lot in Arizona. Is Vitamin D supplementation still beneficial? Dr. Dev: If you’re fair skinned and expose your skin to at least 15 minutes of sunlight between the peak hours of 10 am to 3 pm, you’re enabling your skin to synthesize enough vitamin D. However, most individuals are working indoors during this time or use sun screens to prevent cancer. The trick is to balance exposure with dietary sources. Naturally occurring vitamin D comes from fatty fish or cod liver oil or certain button mushrooms specially grown to optimize this nutrient.

AZSAL: Vitamin C has always been a controversial nutrient. Is mega-dosing it still beneficial? Dr. Dev: When larger quantities of vitamins are consumed, the amount that is absorbed decreases. The small intestine, where vitamin C is absorbed, absorbs 50 percent or less when vitamin intakes are greater than 1 g (or 1,000 mg) a day. Additionally, the kidneys excrete excess vitamin into urine when intake is too high. Mega-dosing — taking 1-2 grams at a time — may be wasteful because it is not well absorbed in our bodies. Higher ascorbic acid intake levels do not equate higher concentrations in plasma (a portion of the fluid in blood). Because of the ceiling effect, there is no pharmacokinetic justification for megadosing ascorbic acid. Studies showing this nutrient reduces the severity or duration of the common cold are inconsistent. Individuals should divide their vitamin C intake across several meals to help the body absorb the most possible. It only takes 60 days to become deficient in this nutrient. Unfortunately intakes of 1-2 grams per day may cause individuals to develop systems similar to the deficiency symptoms should they stop. The body does not store this water soluble nutrient so it is best to consume Vitamin C in divided doses. AZSAL: Do I need extra nutrients if I exercise on a regular basis? Dr. Dev: Like an automobile needing gasoline, our bodies rely on energy from foods to fuel muscle cells to contract. Individuals who exercise require more energy than those who are sedentary and

therefore need extra nutrients to achieve energy balance. A slight increase in protein intake is also necessary to achieve the right building blocks for muscle tissue building and repair. Elite female athletes often need higher levels of Vitamin B12, calcium, and iron to stay healthy and maintain their competitive edge. AZSAL: Are protein powders a better method to deliver protein to the body than food? Dr. Dev: The focus should be placed on

AZSAL: What protein do you recommend after a workout? Dr. Dev: Consumption of complete proteins containing essential amino acids, such as whey and casein, aid in the muscle recovery process. These proteins increase amino acid delivery to and into the muscles, which increases the intracellular availability for muscle protein synthesis. From a health perspective, I recommend Pea Protein. The name might sound funny but it is a serious protein when compared to others. It is a vegetarian source protein derived from green peas, that has a superior amino acid profile with more arginine and lysine levels (per gram) compared to whey protein. Unlike soy protein, which can trigger allergies, inhibit thyroid function, and lower levels of testosterone, pea protein does not have this negative effect on the body. ▲

whole foods for everyone. However, protein supplements may be recommended for athletes with larger calorie or protein need. Protein-based supplements may be an easier to digest form of intake for active people who don’t have time to stop and cook a proper meat, poultry or seafood item. Food sources can provide the equivalent or even more grams of protein than supplements. This takes know-how and not everyone is invested in cooking as well as working out.

post exercise to aid in muscle recovery. Post exercise protein consumption should occur within 3 hours of exercising to take advantage of the increased blood flow.

AZSAL: What is the best time to drink a protein shake? Dr. Dev: Consuming protein at least three hours prior to exercise provides many benefits including increasing protein synthesis in muscle tissues, providing a satiety effect as well as providing gradual deliveries of nutrients to the bloodstream because proteins take longer to empty from the stomach than carbohydrates. Proteins that provide all the essential amino acids become a critical nutrient

Surviving Beautifully Local makeup artist Kristin Provvidenti helps women retain normalcy after cancer

AS A RECENT CANCER SURVIVOR,

skin. After being diagnosed herself, she

Kristin Provvidenti hasn’t had it so easy. After losing her mother to liver cancer in 2005, Provvidenti was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. But since beating the disease, she is feeling and looking great and is helping other survivors do the same. While undergoing chemo and radiation therapy, Provvidenti recognized the need for beauty products that would not only be beneficial to the extremely sensitive skin of a chemo patient but also help women maintain their self-recognition while undergoing cancer treatments. She created Stella Bella, a unique skincare and pure mineral cosmetics line that is specially formulated to be a safe and beneficial product for women with unique skincare needs. “I would hear women talk about how sensitive and dry their skin was and how they couldn’t use their regular makeup,” Provvidenti said. “Many chemo patients’ skin would itch, flake, redden or blister because of the chemicals in typical makeup.” With more than 22 years of experience as a paramedical makeup artist, Provvidenti worked with burn victims and cancer survivors, teaching women how to apply makeup or teaching men how to recreate the look of a beard on their compromised

reformulated her line to include a more natural and safe product. Now, Stella Bella products are made with pharmaceuticalgrade ingredients with natural botanical extracts to soothe dry, irritated and sensitive skin. Stella Bella uses Pure Silk Powder instead of other common fillers which give the skin a soft luxurious feel while delivering 17 beneficial amino acids that help improve the texture of the skin. The whole cosmetic line is custom mixed on-the-spot to match exact color and skin tone of the wearer. Even lipstick, eye shadows and blushes are custom created for each customer by custom blending natural color pigments. Provvidenti is quick to note that the ultra-safe cosmetic line is not just for cancer survivors. Stella Bella products are suitable for normal to sensitive skin, or those with other common skin conditions such as acne or rosacea. Another plus to the Stella Bella line is that the line works well in Arizona’s warm climate. Provvidenti says the longer it is on the skin, the warmer it gets and the better it looks. Plus, it has a natural SPF factor of 30 to protect the skin.

You can check out Stella Bella online at www.mystellabellashop.com or call (623) 806-9705 for more information. Stella Bella has two locations: at 9689 N. Hayden Rd. #46 in Scottsdale and also inside Ramon Bacaui Hair and Med Spa at 4228 N. Craftsman #100 in Old Town Scottsdale. Know what makes up your make up Most people don’t really know or question what goes into their cosmetics. Kristin Provvidenti suggests people look at labels. All cosmetics have an expiration date, although they are not required by law to list them. From the time you open it, the life and effectiveness of the product decreases and bacteria grows and may eventually lead to infection, especially on acne-prone and broken skin. INGREDIENTS TO AVOID: • Mineral Oils: coats the skin like plastic and clogs pores. Any mineral oil derivative can be contaminated with cancer causing PAH's (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons). • Petrolatums: PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, clog pores and cause photosensitivities (reaction to sunlight).

• Fragrance: Fragrance on a label can indicate the presence of up to four thousand separate ingredients; many are known skin irritants and can be toxic. Symptoms reported include headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes and skin discoloration. Clinical observation proves fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, and irritability. • Bismuth Oxychloride: A common cheap filler listed on the Material Data Safety Sheet as a skin irritant. It is reported as being responsible for itching, irritation and breakouts in sensitive skin. • Lanolin: This greasy yellow wax is derived from the sebaceous glands of sheep. Listed on the Material Data Safety Sheet as a skin irritant, it is the common cause of itching, breakouts, rash and contact dermatitis.

INGREDIENTS USED IN THE STELLA BELLA LINE: • Seracite: A coated mica used to achieve a more matte and fluffier consistency. • Titanium Dioxide: An organic mineral that acts as a natural sun block. Titanium

Dioxide has anti-inflammatory properties that are excellent for those with rosacea or sensitive skin types. • Pure Zinc Oxide: Known for its soothing and healing properties; helps in adhesion, adds sun protection and imparts a creamier texture to the powders for smooth matte application. • Magnesium Stearate: An ester made up of magnesium and botanical oil designed to protect the skin and adds moisturizing spreadability. • Pure Silk Powder: This powder acts as an anti-caking agent and gives the powders the luxurious feel of silk. Silk has 17 beneficial amino acids that actually penetrate the upper layers of the epidermis. • Allantoin: Known for centuries for its anti-inflammatory and healing benefits this powder is added to soothe and calm sensitive skin types. Allantoin stimulates the healing of skin. ▲
