INNOVATIVE PLUGGZ SHOES DEBUT ON MARKET

FAVORITE LUNCH STOP: GENGHIS GRILL FRESH, FIT WITH SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE is the best way to describe Genghis Grill. What sets the Mongolian stir fry restaurant apart is that “the signature dish is what you create,” GM Andrew Berens told AZSAL. Essentially, guests travel down a salad-bar-style line to create their own bowl made up of a protein (ranging from shrimp to marinated steak), wholesome veggies, an abundance of house sauces and seasonings, and starches (a variety of noodles and rice). There are more than 70 assorted ingredients to choose from, making the combinations practically infinite. Be your own culinary mastermind or try out one of the expert recipes offered. When you stop by your nearest Genghis Grill, I suggest trying the beef with broccoli. The marinated meat is shredded and laid out in a luscious bed of broccoli and adorned with crisp carrots. The sauce combines the right blend of sweet and tangy. Among the other dishes we tried were the very popular Pad Thai with chicken. If you like the light taste of rice noodles, but enjoy a flavorful kick of spice, this dish is a must. Appetizers such as pot stickers and lettuce wraps are made to order, and don’t miss Happy Hour Monday through Saturday from 3 to 6 p.m., which includes $1 domestic brews. One bowl fits all for $8.99 before 4 p.m. and a buck more after. Or release your inner Mongol warrior and go for the all-you-can-eat option for $14.99.

Feeling good and looking good have never been so easy. A new line of shoes known as Pluggz are offering a new way to “stay in touch” with the earth. Tucson inventor and businesswoman Sharon Whiteley developed the unique shoes with a purpose — to keep you grounded. When a person walks barefoot on the grass or sand, there is that immediate connection to the earth. Pluggz come with a proprietary technology that allows for “grounding.” The special conduit contained within the shoe allows for a flow of electrons from the earth into the body. Pluggz shoes contain a special black plug positioned under the weight-bearing part of the foot. The special plug is made of rubber and carbon that acts as the “grounding” element of the shoe. The special proprietary technology allows for grounding regardless if you are walking on grass, sand, soil or concrete. The shoes are made of high-quality materials and are very stylish, too. The women’s ballet flats are made of supple, full-grain leather and linen with patent leather or leather top caps and feature padded arches and heels with memory foam, moisture wicking, anti-microbial lining and “trampoline” heels for the most in comfort and support. Those who have worn Pluggz shoes reported feeling more balanced, more energized, calmer and having fewer aches and pains. “Most shoes create a barrier to grounding, also called ‘earthing,’” said Whiteley. Women’s shoe styles include classic-style flip-flops, classic ballet flats and a variety of colored ballet flats. Men’s shoe styles currently available include flip-flops in two colors. In Tucson, Pluggz shoes can be purchased at J. Gilbert Footwear (www.jgilbertfootwear.com). To shop online or to learn more about this brand-new, unique shoe, visit www.Pluggz.com. — Contributed by Lynette Carrington

MAY/JUNE 2013

Chop and Wok is Back! After being sidelined for nearly two years, Scottsdale's favorite Chinese restaurant is back and better than ever

FOR NEARLY 27 YEARS, Chop and Wok in Scottsdale served up the tastiest, most authentic Chinese food in Scottsdale. Housed in an unassuming, small yellow building next to the Circle K on the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard, Chop and Wok (and the accompanying Wok Star Bar) was the antithesis of Scottsdale's trendy restaurants — a quirky, independent rock 'n' roll-themed hole-inthe-wall that was crammed full of locals who appreciated the establishment's laidback atmosphere and unpretentiousness. A kitchen fire in the spring of 2011 shut the place down, and after more than two years of remodeling efforts and dealing with red tape from insurance companies, the city of Scottsdale and landlords, the restaurant was resurrected catty-corner to the old location, on the southeast corner of Scottsdale and Shea in a strip mall next to NYPD Pizza and Dirty Dog Saloon. Chop and Wok's loyal patrons rejoiced at the news, and everything was back to normal ... albeit in a new location. While the new digs don’t sport as spacious a patio, the interior is more than twice the size of the original. Upon entering, there is a takeout desk at the entrance, a prominent, centrally located square bar serving up beer on tap (31 varieties), cocktails and the infamous Orange Sunshine shots, a sizable kitchen with see-through

windows, a small (but evolving) patio around back, and plenty of rock 'n' roll memorabilia adorning the walls to give the place a heavy dose of personality. Led by front man Jamie Mather — the blond, spiked hair, punk-rock-looking dude often found behind the bar — and owners Stacy Ledoux and Steven McFarlane, Chop and Wok is all about having a good time — good banter, friendly patrons, a casual and fun atmosphere, lively entertainment ... oh, and the best Chinese food east of San Fran's Chinatown. The menu at Chop and Wok, like most authentic Chinese restaurants, is chock-full of Chinese favorites, including appetizers, soups, salads, noodle dishes, fried rice bowls, chop suey plates, and enough chicken, pork, beef, shrimp and vegetarian plates to make your head spin. Out first was the wonton soup, with boiled dumplings in a flavorful chicken broth seasoned with soy sauce, ginger root, Napa cabbage and green onions. Full of nice textures and flavors, this was probably one of the best soups I’ve ever eaten. The chefs at Chop and Wok have managed to master the art of soup making, including delicious egg drop soup and hot and sour. For appetizers, everything is good, so we suggest the Pu Pu Platter Royale, which includes egg rolls, wontons, fried shrimp, crab puffs, pot stickers and BBQ ribs. The

peas, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and water chestnuts. The sauces were flavorful and light, and when you want to turn up the heat on some of the kung pao dishes, Chop and Wok delivers with some zingy dishes that pack a wallop. All dishes are made to order and can be prepared mild, spicy or firecracker hot. At Chop and Wok, the food is amazing, and for the price, it’s hard to beat. For the overall experience, Chop and Wok is one of our favorite Chinese restaurants/watering holes in the Valley. ▲

ing with a sweet and tangy sauce that dances on the tongue, is served with steamed white rice (or brown rice for a healthy alternative). The orange chicken is a widely popular dish and won't disappoint. The house peanut shrimp is tender shrimp and mixed veggies stir-fried in a delicious house peanut sauce and coconut milk. The pork fried rice features marinated, smoked pork and rice, stir-fried with eggs, carrots and green onions. All of us commented on the crisp, fresh vegetables in the entrees, such as snow

eggs rolls are perfectly crispy and cooked to the center, and the wontons and pot stickers are light and delicious. The fried shrimp and crab puffs are award-winning, flaky, light and bursting with incredible flavors. Sweet, sticky and totally tender, the BBQ ribs are amazingly tasty, and I dare you to eat just one. Be warned ... your face and fingers will get saucy and messy. Overall, the Pu Pu Platter Royale will give you a great sampling of all the amazing appetizers at Chop and Wok. Of course, you can order any of the above individually, as well as jalapeno puffs (we're in Arizona, after all), chicken lettuce wraps and wings. Our entrees came out soon after, and they were delicious. The curry chicken was loaded with veggies and complemented the white sticky rice. The Mongolian beef is stir-fried, and the faint flavors of garlic, chili and hoisin plum sauce are married perfectly. Kiwi strawberry chicken, burst-

Taking a bite out of life, ROBERT HERJAVEC of the hugely popular 'Shark Tank' reveals his successes and motivations By Lynette Carrington

MENTION THE ABC HIT SHOW “SHARK TANK” AND A HOST OF THINGS COME TO MIND — business dreams realized, entrepreneurial aspirations dashed or thoughts about the panel of wealthy and savvy business owners that make up the panel of “Shark Tank.” Robert Herjavec is one of the favorite of the sharks that sits in and listens as business owners and entrepreneurs pitch the panel of wealthy multimillionaires in a bid to get them to invest in their product or company. The “Shark Tank” panel of experts includes a diverse array of business owners/entrepreneurs that have found success in a variety of companies and business ventures of their own, but Robert Herjavec has us captivated — hook, line and sinker. The self-made millionaire is one of the most successful entrepreneurs and businessmen in all of North America. With his parents, he landed in Canada after fleeing communism in the former Yugoslavia when he was 8 years old. The first-generation immigrant had his most humble beginnings delivering newspapers, waiting on tables and then eventually launching his own computer company from his home.

RobertH_SharkTank_MagSeven 5/7/13 12:06 PM Page 4

Fast forward a few decades and Robert Herjavec has achieved amazing success and now owns one of the most successful cyber security companies in the world. His company, The Herjavec Group, has built and sold several companies, including companies sold off to AT&T and Nokia. He has amassed a net worth of more than $100 million and is frequently called upon as an expert on matters of business advice and motivation. His two books on the subject, Driven and the latest release, The Will to Win, are both best sellers in Canada and are published by HarperCollins. Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine considers Herjavec a brilliant business mind and we are thrilled to be swimming with this Shark! A SUITCASE AND $20 It’s a story out of a movie. The Herjavec family sought freedom from communist oppression and showed up in Canada with not much more than a dream and determination. “I came here on a boat with a suitcase and 20 bucks and we lived in someone’s basement for a year,” recalled Herjavec. "When you go from that to where I am today, it is hard not to wake up every day with a certain sense of wonder. I am just so excited about the possibilities in life." In a world filled with big business egos, this humility is refreshing. Herjavec recounts one of the most vivid stories from his childhood that helped set him on his course. At 12 years old, he returned from school after being bullied by some classmates. Barely speaking English and growing tired of being poor, he lamented to his mother about his horrible day and his awful life. His father came home, listening intently as young Robert bemoaned his situation. Herjavec recounted his father’s words, “Never complain. All you’re ever owed in life is an opportunity.” After those words of wisdom, he then walked away. Said Herjavec, “It’s funny, but it really stuck with me, and I am not a good guy to complain to. I just think all of us — Americans, Canadians, Europeans — often times we take things for granted and we feel like the world owes us something … and the world owes us nothing but an opportunity.” The words of Herjavec’s father are especially poignant since he used to walk miles to work to save on bus fare in an effort to get his family a nicer apartment.

“... often times we take things for granted and we feel like the world owes us something … the world owes us nothing but an OPPORTUNITY.”

FAST FACTS

• Robert Herjavec’s home was featured on an episode of MTV’s “Cribs,” and the same home also appeared in the Mike Myers film “The Love Guru.” • The TV show “Dragons’ Den” is a Canadian show very similar to “Shark Tank.” Herjavec started on that show in 2006 and left last year citing his busy schedule.

THE FEEDING FRENZY ABC’s “Shark Tank” will soon be heading into its fifth season, and the feeding frenzy in the tank can be fierce as the Sharks battle to get a piece of the business action. “I think we are all different," stated Herjavec. "Some of the Sharks have larger egos. Some also have a great deal of money and are OK with throwing it away. I’m not naming any names like Kevin (O’Leary) and Mark (Cuban) ... but I definitely think we’re all different. I can also say that, in spite of these differences, we all respect each other.” Herjavec’s calm demeanor and willingness to mull over the details presented to him by the show’s guests reveal his warm character. He is the Shark that sits back and takes in the whole situation, carefully balancing potential monetary risk with the drive, work ethic and passion that is conveyed to him by the person seeking money. “My expectation when I make an investment is to get my money back,” Herjavec said. And he is careful with his pennies, literally. To this day, when he walks down the street and sees change on the ground, he hears the voice of his mother urging him to see the value in taking the time to pick up that money. This Shark’s most lucrative catch to date (from the show) has been “Chord Buddy” — the world’s best guitar-learning system. “I think it’s either the best investment that’s ever been made on ‘Shark Tank’ or right up there. In a year and a half, we’ve gone from zero sales to well over 3 million dollars. We bought a factory in Alabama and we employ 20 people. But it’s not my favorite deal just because of the money, and money is always good, but the entrepreneur Travis (Perry) is a great guy. I love when good things happen to good people … and he is good people,” explained Herjavec.

• Organizers of the Honda Indy Toronto named Herjavec as the grand marshal for the event in 2012. One of his many duties as grand marshal was to give the famous command, “Drivers, start your engines!” to kick off the IZOD IndyCar Series Race. • Herjavec won the “Entrepreneur of the Year” Award in the Information Technology Category from Ernst & Young in 2012. • Herjavec is a regular competitor in the North American Ferrari Challenge series. After winning the 2011 "Rookie of the Year" title, he won both races at 2012’s season opener in St. Petersburg, Florida. • Herjavec wrecked his $350,000 Ferrari in January 2013 during the inaugural Ferrari Challenge event at Daytona International Speedway. Not his fault; he was hit from behind. • Herjavec is also a best-selling author. His first book from HarperCollins, Driven, has been a best seller since publication, and his current book, The Will to Win, promises an encore.

DRIVEN Another passion of Herjavec’s is car racing, and he races in the Ferrari Challenge. “I’ve always loved cars and I love car racing. Car racing for me is a lot like business. You have to go 100 miles an hour, or in our case sometimes 200 miles an hour and stay absolutely clearly laser-like focused and calm,” he explained. He’s a relative newbie on the racing scene, but is making great strides in the sport with his wife and kids cheering him on at the finish line. “They’re very nervous about it, but they also know that it’s part of what makes me who I am," Herjavec said. "Im pretty good at it. I won five races last year and I was also the Rookie of the Year. So I think that gives them a little bit of comfort. They know my desire to be with them is greater than my desire to win a race. So I try not to do anything stupid on the track." THE WILL TO WIN Herjavec’s second book, The Will to Win, just debuted a few short weeks ago. It immediately became a best seller. “It kind of picks up at a point where you’ve got a little bit of success and how you keep that going. I think one of the things I’ve learned is that my vision of success has really changed over time,” Herjavec noted. “I’ve had a fantastic opportunity to meet a lot of very successful people including Oprah and George St. Pierre [the UFC fighter] and all kinds of people from different fields. I drive them nuts because I’m always asking them, ‘What makes you tick? When you wake up, what keeps you going?’ So we’re sharing a lot of those kinds of lessons,” said Herjavec. The Will to Win is available through Amazon.

ARIZONA DREAMING Will Arizona soon be getting its very own Shark? Could be! “I’m looking to buy a house in Arizona. I love Arizona. I have a house in Miami and I have for 15 years, but before we bought that house, I wanted to buy in Arizona,” noted Herjavec. He cites Tucson as one of his favorite areas, and he recently looked at some of the places up in the mountains with a view over Phoenix. “It’s gorgeous out there, just gorgeous. And Scottsdale? I love that area! I love the desert,” Herjavec said.

“Car racing for me is a lot like business. You have to go 100 miles an hour … and stay absolutely clearly laser-like FOCUSED AND CALM.”

How the Toronto connection helps keep the Arizona Diamondbacks competitive By Tony Capobianco Photos Courtesy of Jordan Megenhardt - Arizona Diamondbacks

IT'S THE TOP OF THE 11TH ON A CLEAR MILWAUKEE SUNDAY. Brewers closer John Axford stares down Diamondbacks hitter Eric Hinske. Hinske stares back in a way that only people who regularly watch "The King of Queens" have seen before. He sees a hanging 79 mph curveball the way every Kevin James character sees a cheeseburger. With the crack of the bat, Hinske sends that ball all the way to Canada for the winning home run. Where have we heard this before, former Toronto Blue Jays helping the Arizona Diamondbacks compete for the playoffs? Ever since Toronto became Canada's only Major League Baseball team, they seem to have done everything they can to help the Diamondbacks by giving them good players. Like second baseman Aaron Hill. Before coming to Arizona, Hill had the opportunity to play for a unique team that didn't just represent a city, but an entire neighboring country.

DBacks_Hill_MagSeven 5/6/13 6:06 PM Page 4

AZSAL "In a sense, you're not just playing for Toronto," Hill said, "you were playing for the country. People from west to east rooted for the Toronto Blue Jays." The Diamondbacks made a move to bring in Hill because they were in the middle of a tight playoff race with then (and still now, ironically) defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants. That was special for Hill because like many former Blue Jays who joined the Diamondbacks, it was the first time in his career that he was involved in a pennant race. With a change of scenery, and a competitive divisional race, Hill fit in just fine. He hit .315 and slugged .492 while leading the Diamondbacks past the Giants and into the playoffs as division champs. He didn't just stop after the 2011 division race. Last season Hill hit .302 and slugged .522 with 26 home runs and 86 RBI while stealing 14 bases to be the triple threat that the Diamondbacks needed when Justin Upton was underperforming. With Upton and Chris Young now gone, Hill and Martin Prado lead a group of top Diamondback players who look to wedge themselves in between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants in the NL West race. On the field, Hill follows the same example as second baseman Orlando Hudson, the first former Blue Jay in recent memory to become a star in Arizona. In the offseason prior to the 2006 season, the D-Backs traded third baseman Troy Glaus to Toronto for Hudson and pitcher Miguel Batista. Batista was with the Diamondbacks during their 2001 championship season and was gone after the 2006 season. Hudson, however, was the main guy in the trade and became an instant star during the three years he was in Arizona. In 2007, Hudson was a .297 hitter and a Gold Glove winner with a Gold Glove personality. That year, he and Eric Byrnes teamed up to become the zaniest duo in Major League Baseball and led the Diamondbacks to their first division title since 2002 and their first in the Sedona Red they wear today. In desperate times the year after, the Diamondbacks turned to their friends north of the border and brought in infielder David Eckstein to replace the injured Hudson. Unfortunately, the D-Backs failed to reach the postseason that year, but that didn't stop the D-Backs from relying on former Blue Jays to keep their winning ways. In 2009, the D-Backs replaced both Hudson and Eckstein with Felipe Lopez, who was drafted by Toronto and made his major league debut there. He was a .301 hitter for them, but since Arizona wasn't contending and he was on a one-year deal, Lopez was traded to Milwaukee.

FAST FACTS

• Aaron Hill was originally drafted by the Anaheim Angels in the 7th round of the June 2000 Draft, but he opted instead to play at Louisiana State University, where he posted a career .335 batting average with 23 home runs and 150 RBIs. • Hill was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the first round (13th overall) of the 2003 MLB Draft. • On May 29, 2007, Hill became only the second player in Blue Jays history to accomplish a "straight steal" of home. • In June 2012, Hill became the first player in MLB history to hit for the cycle twice in one season since Babe Herman in 1931 for the Brooklyn Robins and the first modern-era player to do so consecutively. • In 2009, Hill hit 36 home runs to become an All-Star, a Silver Slugger and the players’ choice for the AL Comeback Player of the Year award.

Which brings us back to Hill. He and John McDonald were acquired by the D-Backs from Toronto in 2011 the same way that Eckstein was acquired in 2008. But it wasn't just Hill. At some point that year during the playoff race, the D-Backs possessed the 2006 Blue Jays infield with Lyle Overbay at first, Hill at second, McDonald at shortstop and Ryan Roberts at third. McDonald is special to Hill. Of all the former Toronto Blue Jays to come to Arizona and continue to be teammates with Hill, McDonald was the only one to play side by side with him since his rookie year. 2013 represents the first season that Hill won't be with McDonald. "I took his locker in memory of him," he said with a smile. Despite losing McDonald, Hill still has Eric Hinske, who was his teammate in Toronto for the first one-and-a-half years of his career. With the three-year contract extension that he signed this year before spring training, Hill will continue to be a star in Arizona, and there is little doubt that there will be more former Blue Jays coming to the Valley to help the Diamondbacks win.

UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA ATHLETICS started the 2011-12 school year with a highly disappointing football season and basketball season that also involved their share of off-field shame. However, they finished the year strong when their baseball team won a national championship, , thus bringing back some Wildcat pride. Arizona’s College World Series victory not only reinvigorated the fan base in Tucson, but also fired up those who once played for Arizona. “I was so thrilled for them when they won,” said Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona, who won the national championship for Arizona in 1980 before making his major league debut for the Montreal Expos a year later. “I remember when they were changing to Hi Corbett Field. There was a little bit of a controversy there, leaving the campus. I know Andy kept saying, ‘If we move, we can win, or it will enhance our chance of winning.’ Well, I’ll be damned, they sure did.” “Not that the program needed any more validation,” said former Arizona Wildcat Jason Donald, who is now with the Cincinnati Reds as an infielder, “but winning the title was big in terms of getting the respect that program deserves.” “I know how that develops,” said former Arizona Wildcat Trevor Crowe, who stole 20 bases with the Cleveland Indians in 2010. “In November, December, January, February, going through that grind, then getting into the season and go through the PAC-10. So to watch those guys win the national championship, although I wasn't a part of it, was extremely rewarding.” "It was amazing," said former Arizona Wildcat Nick Hundley, who is now the starting catcher for the San Diego Padres. "I was proud to be a Wildcat just watching them, and I texted Coach Lopez that and I told him that it makes me proud to watch a team like that play and know that it was the same program that I came from." The coach that Hundley mentioned is the 2012 National Coach of the Year, Andy Lopez. Lopez took over the program in 2002 after winning the 1992 College World Series with Pepperdine, when both of his sons — who were on Arizona’s 2012 national champion roster — were barely toddlers. One of the qualities that make a great coach is player development. Players go through a lot of coaching over the course of their professional careers, especially in the minor leagues. However, it is something special when nearly every major leaguer who played for Andy Lopez in college still thinks back to his teachings over any other coach. “I think other than my parents,” Crowe said, “he's the single biggest reason why I'm in the big leagues. I've been in three (major league) organizations and I can definitely say that Andy Lopez is the best teacher and motivator I ever come across with.” "I honestly don't think I would've gotten to the big leagues if it weren't for Coach Lopez," said former Arizona Wildcat Daniel Schlereth, who made his major league debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks one year after playing for Lopez. “He's still in my ear every day [internally],” said former Arizona Wildcat Brad Mills, who was recently acquired by the Texas Rangers. “It's kind of my frame of reference whenever I go through a rough time or try to straighten something out.”

UA_CoachTony_MagSeven 5/7/13 7:55 AM Page 4

“I still draw back from times when I was playing for Coach Lopez,” Donald said. “Coach Lopez not only raises good players, he raises good men.” Lopez’s coaching and player developing has once again turned the University of Arizona into a baseball factory. Lopez’s players were so respected, the Cleveland Indians at one point couldn’t get enough of them. "At one point there was like nine of us here with the Indians," said former Arizona Wildcat Preston Guilmet, who is still in the Indians organization. "It was crazy." Lopez has always been consistent when it came to the type of players he recruits, always more about character than purely talent. "He looks for the right guys," Schlereth said. "He doesn't need to look for the top players.” "If you don't like to play hard,” said Dodgers second baseman Mark Ellis, who played for Lopez at the University of Florida, "he's not the coach for you. He demands everything out of you and he demands that you put your heart and soul into the program. He's gonna make his guys believe they're incredibly talented and incredibly good, even when they're not." To everyone involved with a team coached by Lopez, it shouldn’t be a surprise that he has once again led a team to the national championship. It was only a matter of when and where. “I know that's what he talked about when I was there,” Mills said. “He just told us, 'One day we are going to win a national title here. I hope it's your group, but if not, it's going to be the next group.' That was always our goal, and he said that was gonna happen." As he leads his Arizona Wildcats to a repeat attempt in 2013, those who play under Coach Lopez will learn more than just how to play baseball better than their counterparts. "I grew up a lot playing for Coach Lopez," Hundley said. "He demanded a lot out of us. I learned a lot on the field, but I think I learned more about how to live off the field and how to be mentally tough and fight through adversity. I owe a lot to Coach Lopez."

• Had both of his sons (David and Michael Lopez) play for him during the Wildcats' national championship run in 2012. Michael has since graduated and David is in line to do so after the 2013 season. • One of only three college baseball coaches to take three different programs to the College World Series. • Lopez coached the first Arizona Wildcat to debut for the Arizona Diamondbacks (Daniel Schlereth).

“I still draw back from times when I was playing for Coach Lopez ... Coach Lopez not only raises good players,

HE RAISES GOOD MEN.”

DISADVANTAGE to

ADVANTAGE After progressively overcoming Cerebral Palsy, 'Breaking Bad' star R.J. MITTE shares his lifelong challenge with the students at the University of Arizona. A YOUNG MAN WHO APPEARS TO BE IN HIS LATE 20’s walks across the stage in the South Ballroom at the University of Arizona with his tall, slender 6-foot-2 frame and a gray suit that makes him look like he belongs in a Men's Wearhouse commercial. He holds his microphone firmly and speaks with a crowd of college students just like him about living with a disability. Yet if you saw him walk or talk without first knowing who he is, you would think he was BS-ing you because you would never expect him to have the disabilities that he has. But that does not define who he is. "I never really noticed myself as different," R.J. Mitte said, "until someone said to me, 'You're different!' Then I'm like, 'I'm not different. You're different!'" During the course of his life, Mitte went through nearly every kind of therapy imaginable to go from a kid with cerebral palsy to the celebrity actor we know today. However, when he was given the role of Walt Jr. in the hit television series "Breaking Bad," he had to regress in his therapeutic progress. "Lots of meth," he joked. "It was a nightmare; having gone through the same challenges that Walt Jr. went through, I had to go through all this training that Walt Jr. went through. It really opened my eyes." The Emmy Award-winning television series that has given Mitte his celebrity status through his iconic cult classic of a character has unfortunately finally met his end. "Sadly, we're done. We got canceled," Mitte said jokingly.

• "Breaking Bad" has won 35 industry awards and been nominated for 117. • R.J. Mitte had to regress in his therapy in order to perfectly portray Walt Jr, who has a stronger case of cerebral palsy. • In 2007, Mitte appeared on "Hannah Montana" as a high school jock. • Mitte made his debut as a executive producer in the documentary "Vanished: The Tara Calico Story." • Mitte's next movie is the thriller "House of Last Things," which premiers this year.

"I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be doing half the stuff I'm doing today ... when you have a disability, it's not so much about being disabled, it's controlling your disability

and making it work for you."

The show did not get canceled (the writers felt the story had ended), but the cast and crew did finish shooting their final season, which will conclude the story maybe once and for all. Mitte's event at the University of Arizona, while mostly serious and uplifting, had its fair share of funny business. When the audience asked Mitte about his favorite scene in "Breaking Bad," he alluded to the series' many possible endings; in a joking way, of course. Mitte's event at the UofA was all about finding the ability to rise from every challenge and disability that could hold you back. "I'm a perfect prime example," Mitte explained. "I never thought I would be on a hit TV show. I never thought I would be in the position that I'm in today. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be doing half the stuff I'm doing today. I never even thought I would ever get out of my crutches or my braces, but I did, and I'm always working towards bettering myself and beating my disability and controlling it. And that's the thing; when you have a disability, it's not so much about being disabled, it's controlling your disability and making it work for you." Who knows that better than the Arizona student body? At one point, there was a deaf swimmer named Marcus Titus who became a record holder at the school and helped lead the Wildcats to a national championship in 2008. Two years later, the student government had a successful senator named Jeff Adams, who also grew up with cerebral palsy. "That's when your disabilities become your talents," Mitte said, which is the theme of the night and the theme of his life.

Here, there’s something for everyone; from thrilling water slides and rides for older kids and adults to pools and activities specifically for younger ones. Our favorites? For thrill seekers, it’s the Revolution water slide, which just opened last year; and for everyone, you can’t go wrong at Thunder Bay Wavepool.

Kiwanis Wave Pool, Tempe www.tempe.gov

And there are a variety of fun birthday party and private rental options as well.

“Arizona’s Floating Picnic” www.saltrivertubing.com Tubing with Salt River Tubing and Recreation (SRTR) might as well be declared a Valley summer tradition. How does it work? You park your vehicle, hop aboard a bus that takes you to the river, rent some inner tubes, and then spend a lazy day floating away. Throughout the summer, SRTR hosts a variety of events (including concerts) and offers several types of discounts, too. Have snacks or beverages? Those can float with you, too — hence the “floating picnic” moniker. In fact, there are snacks and drinks available on site. Before you go, be sure to check out SRTR’s website for important information on what to bring (glass bottles are not allowed) and who can go (kids under 8 aren’t invited, either — sorry, kids!), in addition to important safety tips. See you at the river!

•July is the hottest summer month in the Valley, with an average temperature of 104 degrees, according to recent stats. •George Millay is known as the “father of the waterpark.” “Millay is a creative genius who came up with the idea of SeaWorld in 1964, which took the idea of sea-life parks to new levels. In 1977, he did the same to the amusement industry — changing it forever — when he opened the gates of Wet ‘n Wild in Orlando, Fla.,” cites www.waterparks.org. •There are more than 1,000 water parks in North America, according to waterparks.com. •Even at water parks, water safety precautions are still vital. Visit www.preventdrownings.org for the latest water safety tips. •Don’t forget the sunscreen! Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with SPF 30 or greater. Also look for one that is waterresistant and offers broad-spectrum protection.

Too Much Mustang is Never a Bad Thing AZSAL rounds up and rides three of the sickest Mustangs to date!

“Which one of these Mustangs is going to blow my mind the most without wrecking my bank account or sending me to jail?” MUSTANG GT PREMIUM • 5.0L V8 engine • 420 HP • 6-speed manual transmission • Shaker Audio System BOSS 302 • 5.0L V8 engine • 444 HP • 6-speed transmission • 0-60 time 4.6 seconds • 1/4 mile 13.2 seconds GT500 • 5.8L V8 engine • 662 HP • 6-speed transmission • Top speed 200 mph Special thanks to GM John Nissen at Earnhardt Ford in Chandler. Go see him and take your own test drive.

AS SUMMER’S CREEPING HEAT RADIATES from the beaten streets of the southeast Valley, two gear heads are burning tires and sliding sideways trying to answer one essential question: “Which one of these Mustangs is going to blow my mind the most without wrecking my bank account or sending me to jail?” The latter is a decision each man must make on his own. But to answer the former, AZSAL publisher Joe Orr and I decided to terrorize some side streets and parking lots to find out — just for you. Earnhardt Ford in Chandler had our back and hooked us up with the cars. Deciding which Mustang variant to buy is no easy task. Each has its own unique personality. If you just want to chill out and not worry about burning out, the V6 convertible might be for you. If you’re feeling a little nostalgic and have a hankering for a retro lime green body with an unmistakable hockey stripe down the center of it, then the Boss 302 is waiting. If cologne called Sex Panther really existed (if you haven’t seen “Anchorman,” stop reading and go watch it) and you would buy it only for its pungent, gasoline-like aroma, well, my friend, I think you already know the GT500 is just your style. And since most of us live in reality, where physics

exists, the GT Premium will give you all the automotive prowess of the 500 while keeping you alive. Joe and I, however, we love cars and like to go fast. For instance, as a teen, while most of my friends were trying to catch a glimpse of the vivacious girl next door, I was busy trying to peek under her father’s garage door to catch a glimpse of his 1965 GT350. Of course, I later took little Susie Q out on a date in that very car. But I digress. As always, Mr. Orr, myself, and all of the AZSAL team spare no expense to bring you, the reader, the best, always. Therefore, casting any qualms aside, like we had any, may I present to you our Wheels Mustang Brake Down (yes, “brake down”). We are going to look at the legendary Boss 302, the trackproven, road-hardened 5.0 GT Premium, and the always potent Shelby GT500. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. How can we stack up these cars when the GT500 is a supercharged monster and the 302’s sole occupation since 1969 has been taking down other muscle cars on the track? Thanks to time and technology, we can. The Mustang 5.0 GT Premium is no slouch. It comes standard with Ford’s Track Package, which includes upgraded Boss 302

radiator, high-performance Brembo brakes, 19” x 9.0” premium painted (dark stainless) aluminum wheels and 255/40R19 Z-rated summer-only tire, tire mobility kit (HJBAB), and unique ESC module tuning. “It’s fast, I mean stupid fast, and about as loaded up as you can get,” Earnhardt GM John Nissen said, talking about the GT 5.0 with Track Package. “[The GT] handles better than the GT500 and it will probably feel just as fast.” Brawn isn’t all the Premium has going for it. It also has some of the hottest tech, including SYNC with AppLink. Available voiceactivated technology helps you keep your eyes on the road and stay connected at the same time. “Ford put in the SYNC System from Microsoft … It’s BluTooth times 10, it’s better than Audi’s, better than Mercedes’, even [SYNC’s] navigation is amazing,” Nissen told us. “[Ford] is eventually going to have [a

ULTIMATE MUSTANG CHALLENGE

5.0 GT vs. The Boss vs. The Snake Like a good dog, Mustang variants continue to surprise and prove themselves time and time again. So, which is the best? AZSAL Publisher Joe Orr and Associate Editor I.R. Hunthausen had to find out for themselves. After extensive trials and intense scrutiny (no tires were completely destroyed during this test), here is what they found. Power: GT500/Boss 302 Based on horsepower alone, the Snake takes it hands down with 662hp coming out of a supercharged 5.8L V8. Natural aspiration goes to the 302 with 444 horses ready to rock its 5.0 V8. JO: “OK, I’m in love.” (Avid Camaro fan.) IRH: “I think I’m stuck to the seat.” Affordability: Mustang GT With a sticker price just under $35,000, the GT Premium comes standard with the Mustang Track Package, which gives drivers

the most bang for their buck. With more than a dozen additional packages available, from power, audio and comfort, it’s up to the owners to decide how sick they want to make their car. JO: “I’m shocked at the gas mileage.” IRH: “Leather, top-notch tech, and this much power for that price? Sold!” Handling: Mustang GT With a balance of power and prowess, the 5.0 is capable of matching any driver’s desire for speed and drivability thanks to Ford’s variety of available packages. JO: “Steering is responsive, quick on the shift, nice.” IRH: “I feel like anyone could put it to work without putting it into the wall. Great turn radius.” Speed: GT500 With a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, the Snake takes the Boss by just over a second (4.6 sec). Not to mention it’s got a top speed of 200 mph. Sex Appeal: All of the above. JO: “That’s what I’m talking about!” IRH: “Can we keep them?” ▲

Different By Design The 2013 Ford Flex is a muscular crossover SUV ... a cool, urban uber-cruiser that looks equally handsome at the beach or on city streets

▲ ▲ ▲

Perhaps my favorite aspect of the Flex is that it doesn't look like any other vehicle on the road.

WHEN FORD'S PUBLICIST CONTACTED ME to test drive the 2013 Ford Mustang, I was understandably elated (and as you can read from associate editor Ian Hunthausen's review on page 70, the 'Stang was a glorious ride). I was even more pumped when they dropped off a set of keys for the 2013 Ford Flex after picking up the Mustang. At first glance, I didn't know what to think of the Flex ... it's kind of boxy, looks like a low-riding SUV and certainly didn't have the sex appeal of the Mustang. But after driving the Flex for seven days, I'm convinced it's the best crossover SUV on the market. It offers plenty of room and muscle, and with its low center of gravity, it handles like a car. Perhaps my favorite aspect

of the Flex is that it doesn't look like any other vehicle on the road. With rear end sports dual exhausts and the option of adding some pimpin' 20-inch black aluminum rims, this is a rugged, handsome crossover SUV. With plenty of color options — like Deep Impact Blue, Tuxedo Black and a two-tone roof — plus add-ons like the multi-panel vista roof and rear spoiler, you can customize the Flex to your unique personality. Features-wise the Flex is very generous, even in its base SE trim, which starts at $30,900. We tested the LE, which starts at $39,200, but transforms the Flex into a legitimate luxury contender. On the inside, the Flex is high tech and comfortable. On the dashboard, Ford included

sized sedan. And you gotta love the Rear View Camera, which displays red, yellow and green guides that line up with white lines of a parking space to guide you; the Active Park Assist uses ultrasonic sensors to locate a parking space at the push of a button and actually parks the vehicle for you ... hands not required ... no joke. The Flex is different ... designers didn't swallow the bland pill when they sketched the blueprints. Overall, it's a fun, brash, urban vehicle that should appeal to those tired of cookie-cutter SUVs and minivans.

And with the flip of a button, the third-row bench converts to a rear-facing tailgate seat. Partay! Under the hood, every Flex comes standard with a 3.5-liter V6 that’s good for a stout 285 horsepower and 255 poundfeet of torque. When equipped with the standard front wheel drive and six-speed automatic transmission, EPA ratings come in at 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway. On the Flex Limited, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 Engine delivers 356 horsepower and 350 lb. torque across a wide 1,500-5,000 rpm range. This is paired with the traction and handling of All-Wheel Drive. With its big-boy pants on, the Flex screeches from 0 to 60 mph in a giggle-inducing 6.6 seconds, although fuel economy does takes a hit down to 17 city/23 highway . On the road, the Flex handles very well, easily maneuvering through tight parking garages and packed highways like a mid-

an updated instrument cluster — which is flanked by two small LED screens to display information such as fuel economy and current radio station. The steering wheel conveniently includes controls for the updated display, which are two directional pads with OK buttons. In the center of the dashboard is an information display featuring SYNC with MyFordTouch. A Navigation System includes SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. Rock the windows off with the Sony Audio System, kicking out 390 watts of power through 12 premium speakers including a rear subwoofer. The Flex carries seven people in a spacious and comfortable cabin. The second and third rows have ample leg room. The third-row bench folds flat at the touch of a button for extra cargo room; maximum cargo space tops out at 83 cubic feet, plenty of room to carry camping gear, a couple snowboards, suitcases and small furniture.

What a Little Bit of Love Can Do Mesa's Zaharis Elementary School donates from the heart and scores big with actor/musician Jeff Bridges

Jeff Bridges showed a group of generous first graders “What a Little Bit of Love Can Do,” and in turn, those first graders shared from the heart.

Jeff Bridges accepting a check from lemonade stand proceeds on behalf of Share Our Strength.

ALL OF US AT Arizona Sports & Lifestyle Magazine are huge fans of Jeff Bridges. He’s an actor, producer, musician, activist, songwriter, artist, photographer … come to think of it, there is not much that he can’t do. But on April 18, Jeff Bridges showed a group of generous first graders “What a Little Bit of Love Can Do,” and in turn, those first graders shared from the heart. One of our loyal readers, Sandy Smith, was discussing our March/April 2013 cover story on Jeff Bridges with her son, Roman Smith, who is a first grader at Zaharis Elementary in Mesa. He was particularly

struck by how Bridges is heavily involved with the Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. In fact, Bridges helped to found the Share Our Strength Organization. Roman was very concerned when he learned that kids his own age were going hungry in the United States and he wanted to donate the proceeds of his class’s recent lemonade stand to Share Our Strength. Roman asked his mom if Bridges might come to the school when he was in town on April 18 for a performance at Mesa Arts Center to pick up the lemonade stand money. Sandy Smith put the wheels in motion with the help of Zaharis Elementary’s principal, Mike Oliver, and something very special happened. Jeff Bridges came to pick up the $414 donation in person. This was a very intimate event — it was only the first graders, a few parents, a few teachers and select media. We were honored to be invited to share in the children’s selfless act of giving to others and to participate in many special moments of the afternoon. While the actor addressed the group in the school’s library, he talked to the kids about taking a positive direction in life and about childhood hunger here in America. He did a sing-along with the kids of his song “What a Little Bit of Love Can Do” from his

Toward the end of the presentation, Bridges took pictures with the kids and signed everything he was given. He was so generous with his time, and even his longtime publicist, Jean Sievers, and one of his band members, Chris Pelonis, came to the event. It was great to see others who work with Bridges taking part in such a fun and sweet event. At the conclusion of the event, the principal made Bridges an honorary Zaharis “Soaring Eagle.” Bridges then went to another area of the school and drew a huge caricature of himself as a soaring eagle on a big pillar and signed it. "Our best journey to higher purpose in life comes through working through our challenges, and sharing our success."

THERE WAS A VERY SPECIAL FUNDRAISER that took place in Paradise Valley on April 4. “Imagine 100 Faces” was a concert event to benefit the Nick Lowery Youth Foundation. A crowd gathered at a $10 million custom home provided by MRA Custom Homes, and the red carpet led to a night of fun … and fundraising. The evening started on the red carpet and wound its way to the front door of the stately mansion, where guests received a champagne greeting and browsed the silent auction items. Some of the cool auction items up for grabs included boxing gloves signed by Manny Pacquiao, Evander Holyfield and a special limited edition piece signed by Muhammad Ali, a trip to tropical getaway Belize, a rare gold record from Cher, jewelry, a Flagstaff golf vacation and much more. Proceeds from the evening benefitted the many programs within the Nick Lowery Foundation. Some of the organizations and foundations that receive awareness and funds from Lowery’s foundation include Stop Bullying, Native Vision (sports and life skills for Native youth), NEXT (New Extraordinary Leadership), Global Village Champions and Christmas in January, among others. This Dog Bites Bobby Slayton, a.k.a 'The Pit Bull of Comedy,' will bring his blistering style of comedy to Stand Up Live in Phoenix

His act is a combination of abrasive observational humor with thinlycontrolled rage and a non-stop spew of punch lines and venom

MY FIRST INTERVIEW WITH COMEDIAN BOBBY SLAYTON lasted a whole 10 seconds. Upon answering the phone, Slayton is choking and waiting for a Heimlich maneuver that never arrives. "I think I'm choking on a red-hot chili pepper," he quipped between coughs in his distinctive gravelly voice . "Not one of the guys, but an actual chili pepper. I gotta call you back. "

After clearing a spicy meatball from his trachea and collecting his composure, Slayton phoned me back. "You know they told me you were going to call between 11 and 12, and I was so hungry, but I was going to wait," Slayton says. "And about 3 minutes ago, I said 'f$%# it,' I'm going to eat one meatball. I heard the phone ring, so I swallowed the meatball. So between the hot peppers, which I forgot to mix in, the chili flakes, the spaghetti, and the spicy freakin' meatball, you could have been my last interview." Welcome to the world of Bobby Slayton, the venom-tongued veteran comic who's been making people laugh for more than 35 years. Performing his scathing stand-up routine, Slayton will headline at Stand Up Live in Phoenix from May 30 to June 2. "I love coming to Phoenix," Slayton says. "Stand Up Live is a really cool club, and they have like 75 different kinds of beers. They put me up in a nice hotel and I can sit by the pool. And I can eat Pizzeria Bianco every day. Beer, comedy and pizza ... what's better than that?" If you've never seen Slayton live, two words sum up his show: annoyed and frustrated. Rev Up Your Game The Raven Golf Club in Phoenix provides a world-class golf experience and is centrally located in the Valley

▲ ▲ ▲

The Raven Golf Club – Phoenix took flight in the mid-’90s with its exemplary service and a unique pine-laden golf course leading the way.

THE VALLEY OF THE SUN IS BLESSED with many enriching lifestyle options, especially in the sports arena. The big four pro sports all call it home, along with the Waste Management Phoenix Open — the most attended golf event on the planet. But for those who would rather participate than spectate, a rare bird soaring over the foothills of South Mountain gives them something to crow about every time. Heck, even 2012 Masters champion Bubba Watson has been spotted floating around the golf course on his golf-cart-style hovercraft. The Raven Golf Club - Phoenix took flight in the mid- ’90s with its exemplary service and a unique pine-laden golf course leading the way. The formula served the club

well until the summer of ’11 when Raven GC - Phoenix spread its wings even wider to embrace a host of enhancements carried out by OB Sports Golf Management. These projects included a bunker renovation, landscape improvements and specialized tree care for the more than 6,000 Georgia pines flanking the fairways. The growing girth of these trees is not only part of its charm but gives golfers a unique glimpse into challenges more common to the eastern half of the country. The new management team also focused on improving turf conditions and playability by ensuring that Raven consistently sports some of the best conditions around. The supervision of all the improvements fell on the capable shoulders of the club’s general manager, longtime Valley golf professional Derek Crawford. He and his crew rolled up their sleeves and buttoned up their golf shirts (to the top) taking on clubwide enhancements including interior and exterior upgrades to the clubhouse that extended the already strong Raven brand beyond just playing the game. “When it opened, Raven was one of the first to set a new standard for public golf. Then, it seemed to lose a little traction,” said Crawford. “With OB Sports at the helm, we

to hit the golf course. But first, every golfer should ask himself this simple question: Do my clubs fit? In most cases, the answer is no. Golf swings are like snowflakes — no two are the same. Then why spend good money on off-the-rack equipment? Seems like a prudent financial move to make sure golf clubs fit before buying them. That’s where The Perfect Fit comes into play. Headed by longtime local PGA professional Al Murdock, The Perfect Fit is a stateof-the-art golf-club-fitting service. Because it’s outdoors, Murdock is able to assess a golfer’s ball flight (a benefit not offered by big-box retailers) while also considering data collected by the Foresight GC2 Smart Camera System to arrive at the best fit. And uniquely, Murdock crosses the line between club fitting and instruction to ensure that golfers swing the right way with the right club. Murdock’s work led to one satisfied golfer’s testimonial: “I always purchased clubs from the golf retail stores,” said Jeff from Maricopa. “I was

not only restored the club’s luster, it once again sits at the forefront of another paradigm shift where golf is still the focus, but it has much more to offer than just a great golf course.” Topping the list is Grill 36, the club’s eatery and 19th hole that serves up breakfast and lunch daily — perfect for hungry golfers and business lunches alike. Grill 36 heats up as the sun goes down with a rockin’ happy hour Monday through Friday (from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.) that often spills out onto the spacious patio, providing a unique indoor/outdoor experience. And unlike most outdoor experiences that open to parking lots or brick walls, at Grill 36, the view is all golf course. Need a bit more room to party? No problem. The 3,600-squarefoot climate-controlled Event Pavilion overlooks the scenic 18th hole, including a shimmering lake and cascading waterfall, an ideal backdrop for wedding receptions and other special events. The process took about two hours, and I walked away with the blueprints for custom clubs fitted to my swing, and they weren't any more expensive than buying them off of the rack. If you often find yourself wishing there was a miracle product that could make your skin glow, boost your energy level, improve your overall health, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, look no further ... water is the purest way to enhance your skin’s appearance

I KNOW PLENTY OF PEOPLE who exercise on a regular basis and take care of themselves, or so they think. They get Botox, Restylane, and other forms of fillers about every three months. One would take this to mean that they have impeccable skin and look great, right? Wrong! They have convinced themselves they look good, but the reality is they don’t. Their everyday activities include smoking half a pack of cigarettes, drinking soda, and not consuming enough water throughout the day. If you really want to get your skin in tiptop shape, take note of your everyday activities and make sure you follow these tips for glowing skin: 1. Hydrate 2. Exfoliate your skin 3. Use a foundation that gives you a dewy finish 4. Use a serum under your moisturizer 5. Don’t smoke Stay hydrated. If you often find yourself wishing there was a miracle product that could make your skin glow, boost your energy level, improve your overall health, and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, look no further. Often overlooked as a minuscule part of everyday life, water is the purest way to enhance your skin’s appearance. We

If you’re an avid exerciser, drink 90 to 120 ounces a day and enjoy a noticeable different in the state of your skin. Exfoliate. Plain soap and water may have worked in your younger years, but as we grow older, our skin requires extra love and care. One of the best ways to get glowing skin is to rid your skin of its outer layer by exfoliating. Exfoliating your skin with a non-abrasive scrub, perhaps a sugar scrub, will brighten your skin, make you look healthier, and remove dead skin cells. Your makeup will glide on your face seamlessly and your skincare products will be able to penetrate deeper and be more effective. Be sure not to overexfoliate, as this can strip layers of skin and cause redness and irritation. Use a foundation that has a dewy finish. As we age, we lose moisture in our skin. Using a foundation with high-quality ingredients, such as carrot oil, jojoba oil, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (natural sunscreen), and hyaluronic acid, is essential to make the skin look younger and more glowing. In addition to the health threats cigarettes pose to your body, smoking gets in the way of the body’s storage of Vitamin C, which is a crucial element in maintaining youthful, firm and glowing skin. The Mayo Clinic explains that smoking also restricts blood flow, breaks down elastin, and contributes to premature aging and wrinkles. Maintain healthy skin by putting the cigarettes to rest. Fountain of Youth Can a new advanced skin treatment using ultrasound energy give us more youthful skin?

... looking younger doesn’t have to require plastic surgery. One such nonsurgical treatment for more youthful looking skin that is showing great promise is Ultherapy.

78 AZSPORTS&LIFESTYLE

MAY/JUNE 2013

DOCTORS HAVE BEEN WARNING US FOR YEARS: stay out of the sun and if you do go outside, wear sunscreen. Well most of us don’t listen. After all, when you’re in your 20s, a sun tan looks great. Problem is, once you hit your 30s, the sun’s damage starts to become noticeable. So what do you do if you’ve been a sun worshiper in Arizona and failed to heed the doctor’s warnings? Well, fortunately, some new high-tech methods have been developed to improve skin damaged by the sun and time. For many people, looking younger doesn’t have to require plastic surgery. One such non-surgical treatment for more youthful looking skin that is showing great promise is Ultherapy. The science: Ultherapy is a non-surgical face and neck treatment that uses ultrasound (high-frequency sound waves) to actually lift and tone loose or sagging skin without any downtime. In some ways, Ultherapy is just like an ultrasound imaging procedure that expectant mothers may receive. A smooth handpiece is placed on your skin and an image of the tissue beneath is projected on a screen. This allows your practitioner to “see” where they will treat your skin. But here’s the difference: with Ultherapy, that same handpiece is also

used to deliver tiny deposits of focused ultrasound energy at just the right depth below the skin. Your skin: The facial skin is made up of three distinct layers: a visible outer layer on the surface called the epidermis, a collagenrich underlayer beneath the surface called the dermis, and an inner layer beneath the dermis called the subcutaneous layer, also known as the fat layer that has a web of collagen fibers running through it. When the collagen in these three layers break down due to sun exposure, family heredity, or the normal aging process, your face begins to sag and wrinkle. Naturally, treatments that work on just the surface can't do anything to restore the collagen in the underlayer or the innerlayer of your skin. Ultherapy safely heats the skin's underlayer and the web of collagen in the inner layer, causing an immediate tightening as well as improved tone and texture. The improvements are supposed to continue and become more noticeable for four to six months following treatment due to new collagen growth. Improvements can be seen by some individuals immediately, but most will notice improvement after several months. The results should last for years in theory. Treatment: A full face and neck treat-

Beauty_UltraTher_Health&Body BEAUTY 5/7/13 12:19 PM Page 3

BEFORE

Cost: The cost for the entire face is roughly $3,000. The Skinny: For me, the results were very subtle. I plan to try a second treatment in a few weeks, and will provide an update in an upcoming issue. Several patients who've tried Ultherapy have seen dramatic results, as you can see in the before-and-after pictures to the right.. So many factors go into determining the type of results you'll see: your age, skin type, weight, fat composition, your body's ability to heal, as well as genetics. You can visit www.ultherapy.com for more information.

AFTER

ment takes 60-90 minutes, and a partial face or brow lift treatment can take around 30 minutes — neither with any downtime. Ouch factor: Your face is mapped out and every square inch has to be treated. That means lots of energy pulses with the ultrasound wand. During the treatment, a brief blast of ultrasound energy is applied to the skin with each pulse. And you can feel it. Psychologically, that’s reassuring because it means that the collagen is being stimulated and tightened. No pain, no gain. The procedure is uncomfortable, but tolerable. Some spots are more sensitive than others. There were a couple times when I flinched.

At 13, Petefish finished runner-up at the San Francisco City Championships and he was the youngest player to qualify for the Men's Arizona Open. Petefish plays for the Scottsdale Christian Academy golf team (Go, Eagles!) and names his most memorable golf moments as his first match win at the U.S. Golf Association Junior Amateur in 2011 and coming in as first alternate at the U.S. Amateur in 2012. Recent accomplishments include the American Junior Golf Association Farr, in which he placed second. He names his golf strengths as his "consistency, accuracy off the tee and short

game." He displays a mixture of natural talent and hard work and dedication, practicing every day for a couple of hours and "getting in as many rounds a week as my studies allow. "Weaknesses? He answered, "I prefer to focus on my strengths." As he approaches the end of his high school years, he focuses on balancing his schoolwork in preparation for his college career. Petefish has committed to play golf for Georgia Tech beginning in the fall of 2014, and plans on spending the upcoming summer playing all of the AJGA Invitationals and some other amateur golf events. In the high-profile game of professional golf, remember the name Christopher Petefish: His professional golf journey has only just begun. ▲

AT 17 YEARS OLD, Christopher Petefish is making waves in the world of junior pro golf. A recent win at the International Junior Golf Tour PURE Grips Junior Open at the Troon North Golf Club has once again put him into the spotlight as a player to watch as he takes the game of golf by storm. When Petefish was only 6, he showed a real love for putting and chipping, so his parents bought him his first set of clubs. Little did they know how dedicated he would become to the sport and how quickly he would become a star on the course. His mother, Susan, said, "His passion and love for the game was obvious from day one. He loved playing, and that has never changed." Petefish names his parents as his greatest golf influences, as they have always supported his interest in the game. His mother said, "We are very positive and always believe in him. We encourage him to go for his dreams and think big." And think big he has. The love of the game quickly became more than just a hobby when Petefish won a putting medal at The Golf Channel's Drive Chip and Putt
