D.Y.I will serve as a platform to connect ideas from the creative community to the communities in need, empowering them with the skills to make unique and innovative products

in an era when ideas are considered of such high value...

and a generation made up of so many creative thinkers with countless ideas in their heads...

wouldn’t it then make complete sense for ideas to be high value contributions for the disadvantaged communities

donating intellectual property, rather than the depletive donations of funds/material things to assist challenged communities to attain a sustainable livelihood.

The D.Y.I platform would aslo mind the logistics of production

sourcing for materials

Thank you for your interest in the pilot ‘Donate Your Idea’ workshop! Biji-biji Initiative and Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia are extremely excited to see this concept going into action today! In this very first series of the D.Y.I. concept, participants representing the Generating Opportunities for Learning Disables foundation, or GOLD will be acquiring the know how in producing a unique, multipurpose bag designed by Zoe Tate and Gurpreet Singh of Biji-biji Design. The dual purpose design gives users the option of transforming the bag into a vertical garden upon reaching home. Made out of buntings that are often used too briefly and discarded excessively, the material is in dire need of some creative repurposing. Together with GOLD, we hope to produce many of these bags, and also generate many more ideas in reusing this material that’s abundantly available and is in much need of a wastage solution.

which is also available to the public who’ve got ideas brewing and eager for it’s prototype to be created!

With your gracious presence and participation today, we are even more spirited to take the DYI concept to greater lengths, collaborating with more inventive heads from the creative community and the general public, applying ideas in solving social issues and donating more ideas to support many more communities. In this near future, we are looking to launch the official DYI website, where users will be able to upload and donate their ideas and have it connect it to a foundation that best suits the execution of their donated concept. The first of it’s kind, the website will be an open source revolution that truly benefits communities and generates new ideas in addressing social issues.

Biji-biji Design Workshop is an open source workshop that welcomes ideas and public participation in the production of upcycled products and furniture made from materials that the environmental design collective collect from households, construction sites and demolition sites. The initiative aims to inspire a culture amongst Malaysians that is creative, productive and is accountable for their consumptions, by engaging and collaborating with the Malaysian public in the process of sourcing for materials, designing, crafting and producing the upcycled products. The Biji-biji Initiative offers a collection service for reusable products a household would like to discard, welcomes collaborations from public members in designing a prototype, encourages the members of public to utilize the collected materials available in storage and shares the tools available in the workshop. An avenue that is communally engaging, and a medium that seeks to get through to the general public that it is everyone's responsibility to take care of our environment. A recipient of the British Council Entrepreneurs For Good Award, Biji-biji Initiative champions the cause of maximizing the value of materials that would otherwise end up in the landfills. By applying creativity and ideas, the team turn materials that would otherwise become trash into consumer products that are aesthetically appealing, practical and innovative, with the bigger agenda of inspiring people to create rather than waste, and grow rather than devastate. Participate and interact more with Biji-biji through their social media site www.facebook.com/bijibijidesign or have a look at their product portfolio on www.bijibijidesign.wordpress.com

Yayasan Inovasi Malaysia (YIM), or the Malaysian Foundation for Innovation, was established on 20th October 2008 and was approved by Malaysian Cabinet on 7th November 2008. The vision of YIM is to promote and inculcate creativity and innovation among Malaysian citizens, especially targeting children and youth, women, rural folk, people with disabilities and non-government organizations. With close support from the Ministry of Science, Technology & Innovation, YIM was established by the Government to promote and champion innovation, and by doing so, to mobilize Malaysians to embrace and practice Creativity and Innovation. This could not have happened at a better time, when the nation is in need of a new impetus and catalyst to move it forward to a prosperous future. Innovation is the engine that will propel us to that future. More so now when there are so many challenges confronting us, economic or otherwise. Indeed, Creativity and Innovation will energise the people like never before. And it will happen in all segments of our society, in our schools and colleges, from even the grassroot level, in our businesses and industries, and so on.
