LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

A MONTH THAT IMPACTS THE VALLEy — AND BASEBALL FANS

T

here’s nothing quite like kicking back on a balmy spring day at one the Valley’s 10 Cactus League baseball stadiums. The smell of fresh-cut grass ... stadium vendors barking out “beer here” ... kids lined up hoping to get their favorite player’s autograph. Yes, there are no two bigger little words that warm the hearts of sports fans in Arizona once March rolls around than spring training. For the second year AZ BIG Media rolls out “Play Ball!” — a guide to 2013 Cactus League spring training. Within these pages you will learn facts about your favorite team (the Valley is home to the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants ... hooray!); find out where to eat, play and stay near your favorite spring training stadium; and most important — pick what games you want to attend. Play Ball! includes each teams’ home schedule and on page 8 you will find the Cactus League daily schedule for all teams. What also makes spring training special to Arizona is its economic impact. The Cactus League, the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, the Arizona Commerce Authority and the Arizona Office of Tourism released the results of two year-long studies. Those studies show that the Cactus League is a grand slam for our economy. The studies showed that the overall economic impact during and after spring training is $632 million, including $422 million during the season itself. That amount ($422 million) is an increase of $112 million from five years ago when the last study was conducted, Cactus League officials said. So … grab your scorebook, slather on that suntan lotion, dig out your favorite jersey or T-shirt, get comfy in your seat and let’s ... Play Ball!

The Game Goes Global World Baseball Classic in the lineup as part of 2013 spring training

P

hoenix will host the U.S. national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic’s opening round, as well as Italy, Mexico and Canada. Games will be held at Chase Field and at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies. The first-round games in Phoenix will be played March 7-10, with the U.S. as the top seed. The top two teams from the roundrobin games will advance to the second round, which is double elimination. “There was heavy competition from Major League Baseball teams to host the World Baseball Classic, so we are thrilled to have been selected,” D-backs President and CEO Derrick Hall said. “The popularity of this crown jewel event is growing steadily, and it will be an honor to once again roll out the red carpet for first-time visitors from other cities, states and countries. Just as the All-Star Game was able to provide last year, this will again bring a strong economic impact to our region, while showcasing one of baseball’s finest ballparks and fan experiences to a world-wide audience.” The U.S., which reached the semifinals in the 2009 WBC, was awarded the No. 1 seed in Pool D. The decision to hold the semifinals and the finals on the West Coast follows the pattern of the first two classics. Semis and finals were held in San Diego and Los Angeles. Miami gets a second chance at hosting the second round, this time at Marlins Park. The last time the WBC was held in 2009, games were played at Dolphin Stadium. The Diamondbacks once again are hosting games. In 2006 games were held at Scottsdale Stadium.

“We are very pleased to partner with three franchises that will prove to be outstanding hosts of the 2013 World Baseball Classic,” Paul Archey, MLB senior vice president of international business operations, told MLB.com. “The Giants, the Marlins and the D-backs share our commitment to continuing the game’s remarkable global growth, and their world-class cities and ballparks will welcome the unique brand of enthusiasm inspired by the World Baseball Classic.” The tournament was expanded to 28 teams. Miami and Tokyo will host second-round action, with the semifinals and finals at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS

L.A. ANGELS OF ANAHEIM

In 1982 and 1983 the Angels split spring training between Palm Springs and Casa Grande.

OAKLAND A’S

Fans in the early ‘70s were treated to future Hall of Famers Reggie Jackson, Jim “Catfish” Hunter and Rollie Fingers.

MILWAUKEE BREWERS

In the twilight of his career, legendary home run king Hank Aaron spent his final two seasons in Milwaukee.

TEXAS RANGERS

The Dodgers’ opening of Camelback Ranch in 2009 brought Arizona even with Florida at 15 teams apiece.

Five Hall of Fame pitchers have played for the Rangers, including Bert Blyleven, Goose Gossage, Gaylord Perry, Ferguson Jenkins and Nolan Ryan.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS

It’s said that the Buckhorn Minerals Baths in Mesa helped N.Y. Giants owner Horace Stoneham bring the team here.

CINCINNATI REDS

The “Big Red Machine” powerhouse teams of the 1970s won six National League Western Division titles and two World Series from 1970-1979.

CLEVELAND INDIANS

Baseball movie buffs may recall that Hi Corbett Field in Tucson was the setting for the spring training scenes in the 1989 movie, “Major League.”

COLORADO ROCKIES

Hi Corbett Field yielded some towering home runs to Rockies’ sluggers, including Andres Galarraga.

SEATTLE MARINERS

CHICAGO CUBS

Diehard Cubs fans get to see a new spring home being built for the team at Riverview Park, which opens in 2014.

ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

It took nearly a century for the state to land its own big-league team after having been a part of spring training.

The Mariner’s formative years were a struggle, failing to post a winning record until their 15th season (1991).

KANSAS CITY ROYALS

SAN DIEGO PADRES

CHICAGO WHITE SOX

The first Royals club was managed by Joe Gordon, a future Hall of Farmer.

When the Padres joined Major League Baseball in 1969, they held spring training in Yuma.

In 2005, the White Sox became the ninth Cactus League team to win the World Series.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX/LOS ANGELES DODGERS CHICAGO WHITE SOX When the White Sox moved from Florida in 1998, they helped christen Tucson Electric Park with the Diamondbacks, creating the league’s second shared facility. Their arrival also created a great crosstown spring training rivalry with the Cubs in Mesa. Games between the two teams continue to be among the league’s biggest draw.

LOS ANGELES DODGERS The Dodgers have provided two of the biggest surprises in baseball — both nationally and locally. First, they left Brooklyn in 1958 and moved to the West Coast. Then almost as surprising as their move from Brooklyn to L.A. was their departure from their long-time “Dodgertown” spring training home in Vero Beach, Fla., to Camelback Ranch in Glendale in 2008.

CINCINNATI REDS/CLEVELAND INDIANS CLEVELAND INDIANS The Indians are the Cactus League’s prodigal son. They returned to Arizona in 2009 after a 16-year hiatus in Florida, moving to the West Valley city of Goodyear. Prior to their departure at the conclusion of the 1992 Cactus League season, the Indians spent 45 springs at historic Hi Corbett Field in Tucson.

CINCINNATI REDS Baseball’s first professional team became the Cactus League’s latest addition in 2010, joining the Cleveland Indians in Goodyear. A charter member of the American Association, the Reds joined the National League in 1890 and have the longest professional lineage of any current major league team.

PEORIA SPORTS COMPLEX

SAN DIEGO PADRES/SEATTLE MARINERS SEATTLE MARINERS The Mariners are the fourth expansion team to begin play in the Cactus League before playing an official major league game. They called Tempe Diablo Stadium home before permanently moving into the Peoria Sports Complex in 1994. Sharing that facility with the San Diego Padres, the two started a trend by becoming the first pair to share a spring training facility.

SAN DIEGO PADRES One of four expansion teams to join Major League Baseball in 1969, the Padres set up spring training camp in Yuma. Despite the distance, they held spring training in Yuma for 25 years before entering into their current partnership with the Seattle Mariners and the city of Peoria at the Peoria Sports Complex.

OAKLAND A’S The Athletics are one of the Cactus League’s most nomadic teams. In 1969, one year after relocating from Kansas City (after starting out in Philadelphia), the Athletics moved their spring training operations from Bradenton, Fla., to Rendezvous Park in Mesa. The A’s left Rendezvous Park to move into a new Hohokam Park in 1977, played at Scottsdale Stadium in 1979, and in 1984 moved to their current facility, Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

SALT RIVER FIELDS AT TALKING STICK ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS/COLORADO ROCKIES ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS The Diamondbacks enjoy the distinction of being the Cactus League’s only home team. They started spring training in the Old Pueblo in 1998, sharing Tucson Electric Park with the Chicago White Sox. They opened spring training in 2002 as World Series champs after beating the New York Yankees in a memorable 7-game series.

COLORADO ROCKIES As Major League Baseball continued to expand, it also fueled the Cactus League’s growth. The Rockies joined the National League and played at historic Hi Corbett Field in Tucson. In 2008, the Rockies opened spring training as World Series runners-up, after being swept by the Boston Red Sox.
