Something for everyone
T
here’s nothing I love more than to root, root, root for the home team. Or in my case — teams. From the time I could pronounce “Reggie Jackson,” I was hooked on stadiums, bases, home runs and hot dogs. Some of my best memories hail from Candlestick Park, absorbing all the baseball knowledge I could from my dad. If we weren’t in the City by the Bay, we were in neighboring Oakland catching an A’s game. My adulthood led me to Kansas City, where for years I waited patiently with my blue-blooded brothers and sisters for the Royals to get their crown (Go, 2015 World Series champs!). Of course, now the Diamondbacks have been added to my hometeam roster. No matter what team you root for, you couldn’t pick a better place to cheer them on than at a sunny Cactus League stadium. Enjoy this issue of Play Ball.

Owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC), Salt River Fields is the first Major League Baseball Spring Training facility built on Native American land. The natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem is also integrated into the overall baseball fan experience. The design reflects Arizona’s regional architecture — from the native colors to the natural materials.

Manager: Joe Maddon Team mascot: Clark After the game: Check out one of Oregano’s 12 Valley locations. This local chain pulls inspiration — and its deep dish pie recipe — from the owner’s Chi-Town upbringing.
Where they play: Sloan Park, 2330 W. Rio Salado Pkwy., Mesa, AZ 85201 Seating capacity: 14,156 Stadium phone number: 1-800-THE-CUBS About the stadium: A taste of Wrigley came West with the debut of Sloan Park in 2014. Featuring a pair of light towers on its roof that mimic those of its inspirational counterpart in Chicago, the Cubs’ winter home in Mesa has a few touches that pay homage to Wrigley Field, none more cleverly integrated than the outfield berm, which is shaped and sloped to match the look of Wrigley’s iconic bleachers. While the brick backstop was easy to replicate, the ballpark’s designers at Populous got creative when creating the Cubs’ Arizona version of Wrigleyville’s rooftops and that’s how the left field-spanning rooftop party deck came into being. Formerly known as Cubs Park, on Jan. 8, 2015, it was announced that Sloan Valve Company had signed a naming-rights deal to the ballpark, giving it its current Sloan Park name. During the seventh inning stretch, a fan is selected to stand on the dugout and lead the crowd in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” 12 | Play Ball Magazine
