COSMETIC

CONFIDENCE SCOTTSDALE PLASTIC SURGEONS REPORT HIGH NUMBERS IN NONSURGICAL PROCEDURES, AS WELL AS NEW DEMOGRAPHIC TRENDS By Kristine Cannon

In 2010, nearly 9.5 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the U.S., according to American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery statistics. Breast augmentation was reported as the No. 1 surgical procedure, with more than 300,000 procedures performed, and Botulinum Toxin Type A injections (Botox) ranked as the most popular nonsurgical procedure, with almost 2.5 million performed procedures. But over the past year, Dr. Todd Malan, cosmetic surgeon and founder of the Innovative Cosmetic Surgery Center in Scottsdale, reported quite different trends. And he’s not alone, as other surgeons in the area witnessed similar trends at their respective practices. For one, although consumer spending increased, money was spent not on the major surgical procedures, but on cost effective procedures instead. Malan says the major procedures have been “significantly down and continue to be down,” while people look for more costeffective options within their budget, opting for nonsurgical, smaller procedures. “Instead of doing a traditional facelift, 6 Scottsdale

I

WINTER 2012

they started looking at using a lot more Botox and filler and laser therapy and fat transfers to the face so that they could achieve very similar results for a significantly lower cost,” Malan says. Even with about a 12 percent increase in Botox and fillers from 2009 to 2010, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Malan reported an even higher increase at his practice. “We rely on (Botox and fillers) to really supplement our income by about 30 percent,” Malan says, “so we’ve seen a 30 percent increase in fillers and Botox in our practice.” But this increase in nonsurgical procedures isn’t coming just from women, but men, too. Malan, Dr. Patti Flint and Dr. Marc Malek, all board certified plastic surgeons in Scottsdale, have seen their respective clientele demographic change over the past year. “Facelifting in men increased more in one year last year than it ever had in the history of facial plastic surgery for men,” Flint says. Malan and Malek’s explanation for this? “In talking with my male patients, it makes them more marketable in the job market,” Malan says. “The job market became far more competitive, so they are looking to liposuction and Botox and fillers to make themselves look younger, healthier and more vibrant.”

Malan now performs chin liposuction on men three or four times a week, which he used to perform about once a month. “Men are more and more accepting of cosmetic surgery,” Malek says. “I think image has been a source of empowerment in the workforce, and they’re interested in looking better for the simple reason that looking good means feeling good.” Malan also continues to work on Baby Boomers, who “refuse to age gracefully,” he says. “They’re more careful about their spending, but they still have disposable income available,” Malan says. “We’re in that Baby Boomer age where they’re now in their 60s, and this is a group of people that will not accept aging as being a natural part of the process.” In addition to the aging population (the Baby Boomers) having procedures, menopausal makeovers are also becoming increasingly popular at Malan’s practice. These patients seek liposuction, a complete facial rejuvenation with fat to restore the lost volume in their face and even vaginal rejuvenation procedures. “Those procedures are something that were very uncommon,” Malan says. “We’d maybe do two or three every six months, and now we’re doing three a month. These are menopausal patients who are wanting to improve their sexual function.” All three surgeons are optimistic for the oncoming year, ready to adapt to any changes that may come their way. “The doctors who are able to adapt to the changing profile of the plastic surgery patient and understand that the patients who want subtle but noticeable changes within their budget are the doctors that will continue to do well,” Malan says. 10 TOP

TIPS FROM SOUTHWEST SPINE & SPORTS TO REDUCE PAIN

1. Stop smoking and drinking

Smoking has been shown to delay healing, increase pain sensitivity and make a person require higher amounts of pain medication. Drinking alcohol can have serious interactions, even with over-the-counter pain medications. Avoid problems by eliminating unnecessary exposure to these toxins.

2. Exercise

Exercise can reduce your pain and elevate your mood. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers. Regular exercise can decrease chronic pain and prevent new injuries. Your doctor can help you decide what type of exercise is best for your condition.

3. Adjust your workspace

Using good posture and body mechanics can help you avoid neck, arm and lower back pain. Your workstation chair should have solid lumbar support. Make sure to keep your hips all the way back in the seat. Monitors should be directly in front of you, just below eye level and easy to see while sitting back in your chair. Keyboards should be at elbow height with your wrists straight. 8 Scottsdale

I

WINTER 2012

4. Take frequent rest breaks 8. Manage acute injuries Change positions at least every 30 minutes. This accomplishes two things: It allows active muscles and tendons to take a short break; it also allows stationary muscles, such as those in your neck, back and shoulders to move and stretch, increasing blood flow.

5. Optimize your sleep

Sleep has a powerful influence on our perception of pain. It is essential for optimizing the healing process. Getting a full night’s sleep means seven to nine hours per night for almost all people. If you have back pain, place a pillow between your knees when lying on your side or place it behind your knees when sleeping on your back. Make sure your pillow is the correct height to keep your head aligned with the rest of your body.

6. Practice proper lifting

Many lower back injuries occur with bending or twisting. Get as close as possible to the object and keep it close. Bend using your knees, not your back. Never twist your torso to either side while lifting or holding an object. Use two people for lifts that exceed your limit.

7. Lose weight

People who are overweight are at increased risk for back pain, joint pain, muscle strains and injuries. Many people with pain report feeling significant improvement in their pain even with modest weight loss. Track your caloric intake and exercise.

Use “RICE” (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) therapy for minor sprains and strains. This includes temporarily resting the affected area, applying ice for short periods several times a day, using a compression wrap (e.g. ACE) for any local swelling and elevating the effected limb when possible. Over-the-counter, anti-inflammatory medications may further decrease pain and swelling.

9. Recognize when to see a doctor

Most painful conditions will resolve themselves or at least improve within several days. If your pain does not improve, is severe, or is limiting your function, you may have a more serious underlying problem that needs evaluation by a physician. In general, if your pain is a concern to you, seek qualified medical advice.

10. See a physician who specializes in musculoskeletal medicine

Seek physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) for musculoskeletal and nerve problems. The majority of painful conditions can be treated successfully using comprehensive nonsurgical care.

TIPS TO TONE YOUR BODY SO YOU CAN BE CONFIDENT WEARING THE LATEST STYLES

12 Scottsdale

I

WINTER 2012

By Michael Gossie Ever buy the perfect outfit that you think will make you look like J-Lo, but when you look into the mirror, all you see is Jell-O? So what do you do to become fashionably fit? Believe it or not, your first stop shouldn’t be at a gym. It should be your kitchen. “Without proper nutrition, exercise is not going to make a whole lot of difference in the way you look,” says Chance Pearson, northwest district manager for Core Concepts Personal Training, which provides personal training services to Mountainside Fitness. “Seventy percent of how you appear aesthetically comes from what you put into your mouth.” So if you want to look good in that belly-baring swimsuit, Pearson says to worry more about the cookies you take in than the crunches you put out. “An easy quick-fix is to stop ingesting carbohydrates — rice, pastas, potatoes, bread, any sorts of grain — after 4 p.m.,” Pearson says. “Carbs act as sponge, so the more carbs you eat, the more water you retain, which makes the number on the scale go up and makes you look puffy, which is not an appealing look.” By takings carbs out of your diet late in the day when we are least active, Pearson says, it takes energy foods out of the equation and forces the body to burn fat, which is a good thing if you’re trying to tone up. When it comes to exercise, Pearson says people mistakenly think that cardiovascular exercise — running, cycling, elliptical trainers — translates into weight loss. “If I were to divide zup the pie of the things that impact the way a person looks, 70 percent is nutrition, 20 percent

is resistance training and 10 percent is cardio,” Pearson says. “So people who spend all their time on the treadmill put themselves on a very slow road to losing weight because they are spending 100 percent on their time working on 10 percent of the problem.” Pearson points out that after age 19, women’s bodies lose an average of five pounds of muscle per decade.

“If I were to divide up the pie of the things that impact the way a person looks, 70 percent is nutrition, 20 percent is resistance training and 10 percent is cardio.” – Chance Pearson, northwest district manager for Core Concepts Personal Training

“So when a 30-year-old woman comes in and says, ‘I weigh the same as I did when I was 19, but I don’t look the same,’ it’s because five pounds of muscle has transitioned into five pounds of fat,” Pearson says. “Fat takes up about 20 percent more space than muscle, so even though her weight is the same, she is going to look bigger and less toned.” To remedy that, Pearson says you have to replace the muscle that was lost.

To accomplish that, he says resistance training is the key. “A lot of people, particularly women, avoid the weight room because the misconception is that the weight room makes you bigger,” Pearson says. “That’s not the case. What resistance training does is help you build lean muscle, which increases your metabolism, which helps you burn more calories.” If that same 30-year-old woman replaced five pounds of fat with five pounds of muscle, she would burn an additional 250 calories a day doing nothing. But what about those problem areas — butts, bellies, backs of the arms? “There is no such thing as spot-specific fat reduction,” Pearson says. “If your problem area is the tummy, it won’t do you any good to focus all your time there. It’s best to work the biggest muscle groups — the back, chest and legs — which will increase your lean muscle, which will increase your metabolism and result in overall weight loss and a more toned body.” To accomplish that, Pearson says it’s simple: Do pushes, pulls and squats. “Try not to be as concerned with the scale,” Pearson says. “Once you make that body composition shift, turn fat into muscle and boost your metabolism, you will lose inches, have a more toned and defined body, will need to shop for new clothes, and you won’t need a sarong or cover-ups to feel comfortable at the pool.”

TIPS

ON TONING

“Lunges are a great exercise that you can do anywhere and any time,” Pearson says. “On vacation, when I’m overindulging, I do lunges on the beach. It’s a great exercise to tone the butt and thighs.”

Maintain balance

“Isolation creates imbalance,” Shepard says. “Do exercises that improve your overall fitness.” Shepard recommends multi-joint exercises like deep and full squats, step-ups, step-backs and stepforwards to shape up problem areas like the butt and thighs.

Get well-armed

“Seated triceps dips, which can be done anywhere using your own body weight, are the perfect way to tone the shoulders and backs of your arms,” Shepard says. “If you do 100 two times a week — you don’t have to do all 100 at once — you will see amazing results in a short amount of time.”

Kevin Shepard, a personal trainer at the DC Ranch Village Health Club and Spa, and Chance Pearson, Make cardio count “Most people do cardio for long northwest district manager for Core amounts of time and make little or Concepts Personal Training, offer no progress,” Shepard says. “That’s because they don’t push their limits. tips on becoming fashionably fit. No late-night binging

“You don’t fill up the car and then turn off the engine,” Pearson says. “Don’t fill up late in the day when you’re less active. The body just stores than energy. That translates into weight gain.”

Twenty minutes of high-intensity cardio three times a week will result in serious progress in eight weeks.” To know that the intensity is sufficient, Shepard says sweat should be running down to your underwear line. If it isn’t, you aren’t pushing yourself hard enough.

Cut back on sugar

“Sweets are a calorie torpedo,” Shepard says. “Attacking sugar consumption alone and doing nothing else will help you lose inches. If you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, eat a piece of fruit.” 14 Scottsdale

An AmAzing ExpEriEncE! Everyone kept telling me about this salon in North Scottsdale that they loved. They kept raving about the amazing haircuts, the spa services, and how the salon had such a different feel from other salons. Every time I thought someone’s hair looked great and asked them where they had it done, I usually got the same answer—Jo’ Paris Salon & Spa. Everyone kept telling me how great it was, how friendly, and how they were top-notch and gave the best haircuts and color. Everyone was raving about them. And when I was raving, I mean I couldn’t get one of my friends to stop going on and on about how fabulous they were. So, since my hair was in desperate need of someone who could understand it (and me), I took the plunge. The directions were easy—I had the address, but when my friend said it was right behind Sopporo, I knew exactly where to head. When I walked in, I felt like I stepped out of Scottsdale and into Europe. The place had a very cool, European vibe. Everyone greeted me, offered me something to drink, and asked me about myself. It was an inclusive-feeling atmosphere with a chic setting. There was a small boutique to the left when I walked in, and the entire salon was done in dark and light woods with green accents. I came to find out that the owners were from France. Owned by a husband and wife team, the husband, Jo, was a famous stylist in France and was the official stylist of the Cannes Film Festival for 10 years! He had clients, including a large roster of celebrities, come from all over for him to do their hair. I chatted with him for a few minutes (how often does the owner come over to say hello?!) and he told me how it had been his dream to immigrate to the United States and to open a salon here. This one had opened in early 2011. His dream had been to handpick stylists who could provide the same cutting-edge services that he could, and who could offer clients the absolute best in hair care. And the setting was also just as important to him. Everyone who worked at the salon had to get along with everyone else and be willing to collaborate in order to provide clients the best possible service, and the salon had to offer a European feel that made clients feel at home. On my first visit, I decided on a haircut and color—and I have never been so happy. I have difficult hair with cowlicks, but the cut worked those into the style so that it somehow always falls just right. And the color is absolutely perfect for my skin tone. We had gone lighter than I had originally thought, but the stylist insisted it was the shade my skin needed. She was so right. It’s perfect. I’m now a devoted client and will never go anywhere else. And you’ll find me there for my hair, nails, spray tans, waxes and facials! I love this place! Jo Paris Salon & Spa is located at 14202 N. THAT’S A

WRAP

THE INFRARED BODY WRAP BURNS CALORIES, ERASES INCHES AND MELTS THE FAT OFF YOUR BODY

The perfect candidate

By Clarice Wziatek

There’s a new type of body wrap in town, and it’s hot! The infrared body wrap, offered at select spas and fitness facilities throughout the Valley, claims to firm skin, diminish cellulite, erase inches and melt the fat right off your body — no creams, pastes, bandages or indecent exposure necessary. You can even fall asleep with your clothes on while you burn approximately 1,400 calories in a one-hour session.

How it works

The wrap burns calories, smooths skin appearance and detoxifies the body. Skye Roberts, personal trainer and owner of Luna Fitness, a women’s-only gym in Tempe, says,

16 Scottsdale

I

WINTER 2012

“During the infrared body wrap, your circulation increases by 300 percent, and you get blood flowing through your heart as if you were running a marathon for an hour, which totally revs up your metabolism.” Roberts explains that a session in an infrared body wrap heats up the lumpy, bumpy cellulite and allows the blood vessels to flow and break down the cold fat like it naturally would. When it comes to detoxifying the body, the heat of the infrared wrap creates a fever in your body, wherein the body works on flushing out all the toxins, impurities and lactic acid build-up.

Roberts has been a personal trainer for more than 20 years and even with her sleek and toned physique, she couldn’t eliminate the postpartum pooch after she had her baby. Roberts says that she knows all there is to know about a healthy diet and proper exercise, and the only thing that eliminated the fatty pooch was completing infrared body wrap sessions. Roberts recommends the infrared body wrap for individuals who want to jumpstart their weight loss goals, women looking to shed their pregnancy baby fat, as well as those who need increased circulation to combat health conditions, such as arthritis and fibromyalgia. “The body is designed to heal itself, but you’ve got to have the blood flow to do that,” Roberts says. “We’ve got marathon runners coming in here post-race to remove the lactic acid, the soreness and treat the sprains and strains.”

WHAT IT DID FOR ME We’ve all heard of those body wraps where you take your clothes off; they smear a paste on your skin and wrap you up in bandages so you look like a mummy. I declined at bearing all to a salon attendant who didn’t even know my name, but I agreed to try the infrared body wrap because I was able to leave my clothes on during the wrap and read my book without getting detoxifying mineral clay all over it. Before the body wrap, I filled out health and liability forms, then was weighed and measured to gauge the results of the infrared wrap on my body. I had the option to watch a DVD, read my book, or to fall asleep. With the warmth of the wrap I was dozing off in minutes. All wrapped up in the silicone heating pads and blankets, I was warm, comfortable and relaxed. The small fan on the table

Success stories

Roberts has had success stories from her clients when it comes to the infrared body wrap. “We’ve been weighing and measuring women before and after (each infrared wrap) and monitoring their results,” Roberts says. “I had a lady (complete) three in a week and drop 10 pounds. I had another do two a week for a month ,and she didn’t really workout; she lost 19 inches in one month.” She’s also had clients suffering from arthritis complete an infrared body wrap and leave with minimal to no pain.

kept my face cool and sweat-free while the rest of my body was becoming drenched. After the wrap, my skin felt firmer, and overall I felt revitalized. I couldn’t wait to know my results! I did interval training on the elliptical machine for 20 minutes post wrap, and then I was weighed and measured. I was shocked when I got on the scale and gained a pound! The trainer said if I weighed and measured myself the next day I would see a difference. Sure enough, the next day I weighed in and lost three pounds (this included the post-wrap pound I gained). Then, I measured my waist, hips and thighs and lost a total of four inches. Combining a regular workout and healthy diet with the infrared wrap would supplement and most likely improve the results. –Clarice Wziatek

Proceed with caution

There are certain people who should not get an infrared body wrap; this includes pregnant women, type one diabetics or diabetics taking insulin, or people with diseases such as multiple sclerosis because heat exacerbates the symptoms. The client must take out any piercings between the knees and the breasts prior to the wrap. Roberts also cautions against using the machine if you have metal screws, rods, plates or implants for joints. “We want people to be cautious if they have metal implants, there are certain titanium alloys that don’t heat up,” Roberts says. “Just check with your Keep your eyes peeled doctor first, because once the metal heats When looking for a facility that offers up there’s no cooling it down quick.” the infrared body wrap or any spa services, At Luna Fitness, infrared body Roberts recommends ensuring that you wraps are $75 for non-members; are comfortable discussing any fears and gym members are eligible to medical or personal concerns with the receive specials and discounts, person wrapping you. and occasionally you’ll find a “We wipe the bed and the silicone pads Groupon for the wraps as down with sanitizer,” Roberts says. “We well. use a fresh sheet and a blanket to cover you with every single session. We are also a women’s only facility to ensure that our members are comfortable discussing any issues that may affect their health.”

HIS-AND-HER PLASTIC SURGERY MAKEOVERS ARE ON THE RISE

By Kristine Cannon

It’s a trending, albeit slightly painful, form of couples bonding, and you don’t even have to be conscious for it while you’re under the sheets. It’s called his-and-her plastic surgery, or couples surgery. Scottsdale residents are joining the growing trend — which Gene Simmons and Shannon Tweed have publicized through their own his-and-her facelifts — supporting each other through the plastic surgery and, in turn, strengthening their respective relationships. According to Dr. Marc Malek, a board certified plastic surgeon in Scottsdale, couple involvement with plastic surgery is very common. Malek says one reason couples will go under the knife together is because they want to continue to look younger as they grow old together. “It’s almost a rebirth of an active, more dynamic state in their relationship where they’re able to go out, do things and 22 Scottsdale

WINTER 2012

get involved in social activities more,” Malek says. “They feel they’re better represented as far as their physical side.” Dual makeovers boost their spirits, self image, confidence and their happiness directly, he adds. Dr. Patti Flint, also a board certified plastic surgeon in the Scottsdale and Mesa area, has heard patients give similar reasons. “What I hear most commonly from patients is that they both still feel very active, and they feel younger than they look,” Flint says. “They’re both very supportive of continuing to look as good as they can as a couple, and they want to do it together.” Over the past year, Flint’s practice has experienced a 25 percent increase in its volume of procedures. She says the trend of couples going into surgery together has helped more men become more comfortable with the idea of cosmetic surgery and embrace the idea of having, more specifically, facial surgeries.

“Once they see their spouse go through it and how improved they look and how much better they feel about the way they look,” Flint says, “then they start to think it’s a reasonable idea.” Generally, women will come in for an evaluation, commonly for facial treatments or breast augmentations, and the husbands will tag along. The husband then expresses interest, or the wife will point out any physical concerns the husband had previously expressed. “A female patient will say, ‘My husband’s neck bothers him,’ or ‘His upper lip is bothering him,’ and that will get him talking,” Flint says. Most of the time, though, it isn’t until after the wife receives the surgery that the husband is convinced of the idea. “Men will observe their wives go through the process and feel that confidence and how the wife has changed,” Malek says. At Flint’s practice, women in the 45 to 60 age range will more commonly come in for facial treatments, such as Botox and fillers and facelifts; men focus on working on the neck or upper eyelid. Patients in their 30s to 40s will come in for fillers, too, but for more preventative measures, to “continue to look good for a longer period of time before they have to consider more significant procedures that have longer downtimes,” Flint says. At Malek’s practice, more patients who take part in the his-and-her plastic surgery trend include those couples in their 40s to over 50.

But the women in their mid-30s to 40s come in to correct any changes made to their body post-pregnancy; these procedures include tummy tucks and breast augmentation. Men ask for contouring procedures, such as liposuction, as well as cosmetic surgery targeting the face. “Men focus on the face, jawline and neckline,” Malek says. “They want to bring back the masculine traits.” And along with cosmetic surgery comes anxiety, and Malek says couples sharing the experience helps alleviate that stress and nervousness, especially post-op. Both doctors rarely schedule the pair to have surgery at the same time; instead, they schedule them a few weeks apart. Flint says she has even spaced them as close together as one week apart. By the time one person is a week out, he or she is ready to be supportive to the other, she adds. Malek agrees. “As far as couples coming in together, I think they do play a very supportive role when their surgeries may be one or two weeks apart,” he says. “The relationship can be very strengthened by these procedures.” For more information about his-and-her plastic surgery in the Scottsdale area, visit marcmalekmd.com or pattiflintmd.com.

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR KITCHENS COOK UP MEMORIES

I

t’s funny how my most cherished memories revolve around the kitchen. One of my earliest memories is of a 3-year-old version of myself staring up at my Grandma Gossie as she cranked tomatoes through her grinder in the first step of a process that created the most amazing Italian “gravy” I will ever taste in my life. One of my happiest memories is of coming home from kindergarten on cold, upstate New York winter days and watching my Grandma Killigrew — yes, I’m half Irish and half Italian — make me the most delicious grilled cheese sandwiches in her 100-year-old cast iron skillet that had been handed down to her from her grandmother. We’d laugh, talk, tease each other and eat. It wasn’t Disneyland. It wasn’t a new bike on Christmas morning. But it’s easily my most cherished childhood memory. So it’s not a surprise that as an adult, I have always made sure the kitchens in my homes were the focal point. When I bought the historic house I’m in now, the first thing my wife and I did was bust out a wall and double the size of the kitchen. Good thing, too. A year later, we had 85 people for our carbo-loading party before the P.F. Chang’s Rock N Roll Marathon. A year after she died, Grandma Gossie’s gravy recipe is still creating memories. So it’s with good reason that our Scottsdale Living staff puts a lot of effort into giving readers plenty of ideas for things to do with their kitchens. That’s where friends and family gather. That’s where holidays are shared. That’s where memories are created and live. I have a 100-year-old cast iron skillet in my cupboard that will attest to that.

ith nearly a quarter of the employed workforce working from home in 2010, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, and an increase in stay-athome entrepreneurial moms (or WAHMs, work-at-home moms), garages, patios and children’s bedrooms have been rearranged and transformed into home offices. Jeff Hillis, co-owner of Hillis Bolte Luxury Builders in Scottsdale, has witnessed 8

this trend over the past year as well. “We have many corporate clients and regional sales managers that have chosen to make Scottsdale their home base and incur more traveling rather than moving their families to be closer to their corporate offices or their territories,” Hillis says. About 30 percent of Hillis Bolte’s projects include some form of an office addition or remodel. Hillis says the home office remodel is Hillis Bolte’s No. 3 most

requested project, with kitchen and baths ranking at No. 1 and No. 2. “We have worked on approximately 10 office projects last year,” Hillis says, “with an increase to 12 to 13 this year.” What’s important to consider when remodeling a room into an office is location, experts say. According to Christine Cox, designer and owner of CC Interior Designs in Phoenix, homeowners must keep their workspace separate from their personal space.

(Above) Bedrooms can be converted into an office, complete with a Murphy Bed. (Left) Or, closets can be reworked into a useful work area by adding a built-in. (Facing page) But to get the most out of your home office remodel, create a reasonable budget and start with a good design. Photos: Hillis Bolte

FROM HOME “Location is important for a productive workspace,” Cox says. “Clients need to make an assessment of what their needs are.” For instance, if you have children around, where will you hold your conference calls? Find a quiet, closed-off workspace. Or, will you have clients coming to your home? Consider having separate access to your home so they don’t have to walk through the house. Cox adds that planning is important as well, especially space planning; this includes making sure your furniture will fit in the room, before you spend the money.

Hillis Bolte also emphasizes planning during the beginning stages with its clients. Through a Q&A session, Hillis Bolte “gets them thinking about their overall needs and desires” in order to maximize any room or space, Hillis says. “The most common mistakes people make when doing a remodel on their own is that they don’t start with a good design,” Hillis adds. “The best way to get the most value out of a project is to create a reasonable budget and utilize the skills of the builder and designer.” Some easy ways to turn a room into an

office include reworking the closet into a useful work storage area. Cox suggests opening up the closet space by removing the doors and adding a built-in. Hills adds that this is both practical and appealing. Hillis also suggests replacing the carpet of the space with wood or stone flooring, giving the room more of an office feel. “The key to any office remodel is for it to never look or feel it was a previous bedroom,” Hillis says. Lastly, ask yourself if you have adequate outlets that will keep up with your dayto-day tasks, and seek help from an IT professional. Regarding your phone line, Cox says it’s best to keep your business line separate from your personal line. Whatever your home business may entail, be sure you plan it out thoughtfully for a more productive, regret-free space. “Everyone seems to find a way to maximize the home office and stay focused and productive,” Hillis says. “It seems that there are many more positives than negatives with the home office.” CC Interior Designs, BC Renovations, L.L.C. 2453 E. G E T AWAY FR O M I T A L L A N D T U R N YO U R M AST ER B AT H I N TO A S PA R E T R E AT s you slip deeper into the bubbling, effervescent silky water, warming and moistening your body, your fingers trace the limestone tub. The lights dimmed low, you willingly release the pent up tension of the busy week; with work and kids, you haven’t had a chance to get away. But your state of meditation is broken once your mind begins to question when you were last at a spa. A few months ago? A year? Who cares — your bathroom’s your retreat now. Many Scottsdale residents continue to ditch the hotel-based day spa and create that spa experience right in their own bathrooms, especially with bathrooms growing in size. “The bathroom is more than just a place to brush your teeth,” says Jeremy Smith of Central Arizona Supply in Scottsdale. “It’s now a place where you can take time to relax. “What has really made it more spalike and people creating more of a spa experience has definitely been led by people going to hotels,” Smith says, “and seeing these hotels have changed the way they do bathrooms.” Paige Snodgrass, a showroom consultant at the Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery in Scottsdale, has witnessed this trend over the past year as well. “Eight of every 10 clients I work with are trying to make (their master baths) more of a spa,” Snodgrass says. “This is truly a retreat for them.” Both agree that homeowners are now spending the extra cash on themselves, to get what they want instead of merely 12 Scottsdale | WINTER 2012

what they need, to make more long-term goals with their master baths to make it that “special room,” as Snodgrass puts it. “It’s the way of thinking that’s changed,” Smith says. “Now it is much more, ‘What do I want in this bathroom for myself?’ ” Over the past year, one change Smith has witnessed is an increase in freestanding bath sales. He says in the past, 90 percent of Central Arizona Supply’s sales were comprised of regular bathtubs. Now, it has become a battle of the baths with freestanding tubs taking 50 percent of the business. “Freestanding can free up to two

or three feet of space, making your current bathroom bigger,” Smith says. “So, that’s the reason you’re seeing this trend — as well as they’re beautiful, so it’s an aesthetic thing.” But the regular bathtubs are fighting back — with the Jason Hydrotherapy tub. “Since (the Jason Hydrotherapy tub) came out four months ago, our tub sales have gone through the roof,” Smith says, “and that has really balanced the freestanding baths we’ve been selling more of.” Jason Hydrotherapy tubs, priced at $14,790, are unique in that they are the

only tubs that use Microsilk, which are oxygen-rich microbubbles. These clouds of oxygen penetrate deep into your pores for a more thorough cleansing, moisturizing your skin. They also keep your bathwater warm, so you don’t have to add more hot water. Snodgrass calls bathtubs similar to the Jason Hydrotherapy tub “combination tubs.” These tubs have jets and air bubbles, and the purchaser can have the “best of both worlds,” she says. The No. 1 reason why customers will opt for these tubs in their spa bath? According to Snodgrass, it’s all about the health and

stress-reducing benefits. “The main reason people will put combination tubs in their master bath is for the therapeutic reasons to aid in mental wellness and help your mood,” she says. Other unique products Smith and Snodgrass have been selling in their respective showrooms include the Kohler “Numi” toilet, which comes complete with features such as feet warming capabilities, a deoderizer, heated seat and more — perfect for those who want to spend more time in their bathrooms. They are also helping to lower the running cost as well as the amount of energy it takes to run kitchen appliances, according to Still, in turn decreasing your electric bill. As an example, Sub-Zero markets a line of fridges that cost less than $75 a year to run compared with the average $126 a year. Backyard Living

Back In The Yard Staying in shape with different elements and activities in the backyard By Mohammed T. Munir he backyard as we know it has possibilities that we often overlook, particularly when it comes to exercise. While the size of one’s backyard may be subject to the density of the community, the layout and infrastructure of homes in Arizona allow a privacy and personalization that many places do not offer. Think about the exercise possibilities that backyards offer. Beyond having a pool to exercise in, sports courts, putting greens and yoga areas are all possibilities to create the perfect “playground” in the backyard. With vendors, designers and other specialists readily available, it is possible to unify several elements and interests to create a plan and a system that promotes well being and prepares us for daily tasks — all in the form of enjoyable recreation. ENDLESS POOLS Consider a scenario in which an element such as a swimming pool is not only fun, but can also be part of a proper workout. Most backyard pools are relatively smaller in size than pools found at fitness centers or athletic facilities, providing a limited space for swimming laps. However, with the right mechanisms, this can be changed. A typical residential pool can be modified to create waves for one to swim against, creating an “endless pool” effect. Think of it as a treadmill — except it’s for swimming. “It is better to consider the endless pool function when first thinking about designing a pool, but that does not mean an existing swimming pool cannot be modified as well,” says Michael Paluscio of Boulder Creek Pools in Phoenix.

From yoga to cardio, increase your well-being in your own backyard.

ttsda d le da l | WINTER 2012 22 Scottsdale

YOGA ZONES Another activity, such as yoga, can easily be transformed as a zone in the backyard. Yoga exercises can take place in a studio with others, but that does not mean it always has to. According to Lee Zinsky from At One Yoga in Phoenix, “As long as the yoga environment is defined, neutral, and safe for an individual, the space can take any form and setting. “It is dependent on the individual of what they need around them to be able to reach a meditative state,” Zinsky adds. Based on that, a “yoga zone” setup can vary from household to household because one person’s requirements will differ from another. Thus the zone can be situated in the backyard as long as the basic requirements for a space are met. A HEALTHY ENVIRONMENT Combining yoga and swimming with other activities, such as a putting green or volleyball pit, or even a workout zone and an herb garden, can create a healthier environment in which to live. This is where a specialist, such as Paradise Greens in Scottsdale, comes in handy for putting green golf systems, and landscape architects or designers, such as Azul Verde Design Group in Cave Creek, become better investments to bring the vision of a backyard setting into reality. If these possibilities are taken into consideration, the backyard setting now becomes a personalized space for enjoyment and preparation.

Living environments are going more contemporary, and cost-conscious

T

hinking about redesigning your home? Est Est and Wiseman and Gale agree that one style in particular has been gaining popularity. “In the last few years, we have been getting busier with the contemporary style,” says Scott Burdick, managing partner of Wiseman and Gale, an interior design firm in Scottsdale. Contemporary can range from using retro elements from the 1950s and 1960s, or going more classic-modern, blending traditional elements together. GOING GREEN One design incorporated into more and more homes is layering grasscloth on walls. This adds more texture to the atmosphere. “We are seeing more wall coverings, and they give off energy,” says Tony Sutton, owner and head designer of Est Est, an interior design firm in Scottsdale. “The background materials give off more vibrant colors and feelings as to what the room is meant to be used for.”

Clean lined transitional pieces mixed with antiques create a simplified restful atmosphere.

In addition to adding earthy and earth-inspired elements to their homes, homeowners are making room for more eco-friendly additions, too. In order to adjust to the demands and support the trending of the LEED green movement, Est Est recently installed solar panels to a Scottsdale home using Cradle to Cradle materials, which are recycled.

With relatively traditional Arizona architecture, oversized telescoping doors create modernity and a dramatic transition from indoors to out.

“The solar panels are something called active solar; they hook up to the power meter and run backwards,” Sutton says. “This is higher technology that generates electricity.” SAVING A BUCK In order to help guide clients through the decision-making process confidently, and to make sure clients receive the design or redesign they envision, Est Est has technology that allows clients to see the final product before the project has begun. This way, clients will be more confident in their decision and purchase. “We can show blueprints on a screen for customers, and we want to make the client feels comfortable when we show them the samples,” Sutton says. “We have everything right here at our fingertips for clients to see and use before we start the work.” Hiring professional designers can help you avoid making costly mistakes, and if a budget is given up front, they can work with it, Burdick says. “People are now taking a look at what they need instead of what they want for the environment they are creating for themselves to live in,” Burdick says. PROCEED WITH CAUTION Clients are beginning to work in phases when it comes to designing their home

for the first time or redecorating a room. People are proceeding cautiously with their money today, and having shorter projects spaced out is a great way to save and keep track of money. Designers say that as long as you come in with a plan with exactly what you want designed and plan a budget, getting that beautifully designed house or room can easily become a reality. “If you can lay out some basic ideas beforehand, and then buy things you love, that to me is the easiest way to create an environment where you can come home every day and say ‘I am so glad to be home,’ ” Burdick says. “Don’t be afraid to look at design magazines,” Sutton says. “There are creative ways to put something together that has the same feeling as what you see designers doing.” Est Est, Inc. 17770 N. No detail was overlooked, from the aweinspiring Venetian plaster and elegant fireplaces to stonewalls and spiral staircases, all set against a neutral palette. Taking authenticity to the highest level, Est Est used reclaimed two-tier wood beams, placing them in an unexpected place — the ceiling — to evoke

surprise in the kitchen and living room. “This Tuscan villa is a true reflection of what you would see in Italy,” says Sutton, lead designer and president of Est Est. “Although the home is brand new, the couple wanted it to feel as if it was hundreds of years old and passed down from generation to generation. At the same time, they wanted tucked away rooms that surprised guests with modern and unexpected colors that reflected their age and love for entertaining.” In a few rooms, the interior design makes a dramatic shift from the Old World style. The young couple wanted fun gathering and entertaining areas that paid tribute to two different styles. As a nod to the husband’s roots in the Midwest, Est Est’s designers created an

Surrounded by hardwood floors and an oversized dark wood bar, this traditional take on a “man cave” features a decades-old shoe shine chair and vintage-style clock as focal points of the room. In another area of the home at the bottom of a classic spiral staircase in the basement, Est Est designers created a fun and modern setting with a New York City vibe by using plush red and purple tones that contrasted against leopard print carpet. Geometric columns covered in metallic tiles create a sense of rhythm. An energetic take on a room almost exclusively used for parties, designers wanted to capture the ambiance of big city nightclubs throughout. 38 Scottsdale | WINTER 2012

Discover your style! In the few short months since La Maison Interiors opened in the former Robb & Stucky complex in North Scottsdale, the beautiful new interior design studio and showroom has quickly become the ultimate destination for those seeking extraordinary quality, unique furnishings and design elegance in a wide variety of styles. La Maison is the realization of a dream for Alan Reinken who, as Robb & Stucky’s Western region vice president, kept profits flowing for the Scottsdale store, even as the Floridabased national furniture retailer fell into bankruptcy and liquidation. As he worked his way up in the industry during a career of over 40 years, Reinken developed a passion for furniture design and built priceless relationships with small factories around the world that take immense pride in the quality and uniqueness of the furnishings they create. Those relationships are key to La Maison’s appeal. “I feel an almost personal connection to the items we carry,” says Reinken. “After all, I handpicked almost every item here. And I know the people who made them and poured their immense talent into each piece. I believe that working so intimately with small, quality manufacturers around the world, sometimes even helping to design pieces we will be selling in the store, is something that truly sets La Maison apart from everyone else. Handcrafted is more the norm than the exception. The pieces we have here are absolutely unique.” Reinken’s co-founder, Davinder Chawla, is equally passionate about interior design. A gifted designer, her 15 years of design experience and “designer’s eye” provide the perfect complement to Reinken’s in-depth knowledge of products and what makes a business such as La Maison successful. Where Reinken travels widely to personally seek out the extraordinary furnishings available at La Maison, Chawla purchases the products for the showroom and, with her team of six talented, experienced designers, provides the creative genius behind the boutique showroom’s enchanting displays. Together, they have created a unique experience for those who are fortunate enough to find their way to La Maison.

IN-HOUSE DESIGN TEAM

“Our clients,” says Chawla, “can find everything they need right here at La Maison to create a functional, beautiful interior. Our team of designers is eager to help them transform their dreams and unique personal tastes into the reality of a truly distinctive home. And the showroom lets the clients actually experience how the furnishings they are selecting will feel and look. All of the furnishings in the store can be special ordered, a majority can be customized, and orders can be delivered in weeks rather than months.” La Maison is filled with a remarkable variety of truly timeless furnishings in styles that range from elegant European to sophisticated contemporary. Visitors exploring the 25,000 sq. ft. showroom discover charming vignettes and displays at every turn, each so complete it could easily slip intact into a home. Just inside the showroom door, visitors may find a massive hand-carved Spanish Colonial credenza with a lighted hutch/ bookshelf that has made its way from a small artisan factory in Mexico to La Maison where it waits for its final home in a spacious Southwestern setting. In the showroom itself, a dining room featuring a table and chairs hand carved in an elegant European style might adjoin a bedroom setting in the same style and featuring a solid handcrafted bed dressed in silk bed linens fit for a queen. At the next turn, those who seek the simplicity of a more contemporary style may find clean-lined classically styled sofas, chairs, tables and lamps artfully arranged atop a plush, richly colored area rug. Exploring La Maison Interiors is like taking a trip around the world to absorb the colors, textures and graceful lines of the world’s finest home furnishings. It is a visual feast of truly international dimensions. It is, quite simply, an experience not to be missed.
