Buy Dine Stay in Flagstaff T

he Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce initiated its signature buy local movement in 2005. Buy Dine Stay in Flagstaff was created by business leaders as an educational campaign to highlight the importance of spending your dollars in Flagstaff first for all purchases and services. It is intended to raise awareness of how significant local purchase power is when it comes to maintaining a healthy economy.

The Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce reminds you to Buy•Dine•Stay in Flagstaff now, and use your dollars to help our local business community grow and prosper which is good for everyone. Buying local instead of online or outside of Flagstaff ensures that sales taxes are reinvested locally. A strong, vibrant business community is key to the well-being of our city. When you Buy•Dine•Stay in Flagstaff, you directly boost the local economy and business success. You contribute to those tax revenues we all rely on for basic services. Most importantly, you support local companies, help save jobs and hopefully allow for job creation down the road as business grows. 4

Ultimately, you get more for your money when you Buy•Dine•Stay in Flagstaff. You not only purchase a product or service; you also make an investment in your hometown. When you Buy•Dine•Stay in Flagstaff, your monies are recycled right here. Business owners and their employees buy groceries, use doctors and dentists, have children in school, and in general, are spending their paychecks for the same living expenses that you do. The taxes collected by the city keep you safe, repair your streets and preserve the small town mountain charm you have come to enjoy. What’s spent in Flagstaff stays in Flagstaff. If you buy in other communities, they get all the sales tax benefit. Their economy grows, their

businesses prosper and the taxes they collect from you fund their police, fire and other services. Shopping closer to home and buying local also conserves energy and resources in the form of fuel, time and packaging. You nurture our community when you buy local. Business owners do their fair share of investment back into this community. Many Flagstaff businesses donate dollars, time and other resources to schools, churches and various non-profit agencies citywide. They care about this community like you do and if they cannot meet their revenue targets, those less fortunate than us potentially receive less dollars for their needs. They depend on us for support. When business is healthy, the entire community is healthy. We

Locally Owned & Operated 2014

all need to play our part to ensure our community stays strong and our economy grows. And besides, customer service is better in your own community because small business owners are people who know the community, know you, and are more invested in your satisfaction and success. So please remember to Buy•Dine•Stay in Flagstaff. Business depends on your support. You can help spread the word by getting a free Buy•Dine•Stay in Flagstaff decal from the Greater Flagstaff Chamber for your business, home or car. Support local businesses

Boost Your Economy I

t’s simple economics. As much as $75 out of every $100 that you spend at locally owned Compare that to $40 at nonlocally owned establishments and zero dollars when you buy online, and your shopping priorities should be crystal clear.

LOCAL IMPACT More money staying put in your area means more funding for your schools, roads and hospitals. Tax revenue created from local purchases goes back into community improvements and new development opportunities. In short, your money plays a major role in enhancing your daily life and the lives of those around you – depending on where you spend it. Additionally, small-business owners are more likely to make social investments in the community by volunteering at their child’s school, donating to local charities and hosting 6

Locally Owned & Operated 2014

fundraising events, according to The American Small Business Coalition. Doing so allows these entrepreneurs to ingrain themselves into their communities and make it known that they are sensitive to the needs of those around them. From local music groups to youth sports teams, smallbusiness owners are quick to offer their sponsorship and money to help support community groups. This helps create customer buy-in for business owners, as well as a reputation for genuinely caring about their communities.

HIRING LOCAL

And since local business owners hire local workers – about half of all private sector workers are employed in small businesses, according to the Bureau of Labor – money for taxes and wages stays in the community, too. Unemployment statistics are linked very closely to the success or failure of small businesses, which means that your infusion of shopping money can also make a positive impact on a national level. This creates a strong connection between workers and customers alike. You’re more than just another number in the customer count when you visit a local

business. Without your business, your local small-business owner would not be able to hire or retain as many local

workers. From the owner down to the seasonal part-timer, all employees of small businesses depend on your support.

Local First initiatives are boosting customer traffic on Main Street, according to a 2013 national survey of independent business owners conducted by the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in partnership with the Advocates for Independent Business. With 550 member businesses, Local First is the largest organization supporting and advocat-

ing for locally owned companies in the Midwest. The survey – gathered from 2,602 independent businesses – also found that small-business owners need policymakers to do more to create a level playing field. Write your local congressional leaders to make your voice heard on any of the following issues you feel need to be addressed.

Among the survey’s key findings: • Strong growth: Independent businesses reported revenue growth of 5.3 percent on average in 2013. • Buy Local: More than 75 percent of businesses located in cities with active Local First campaigns reported increased customer traffic. They also reported sales growth of 7 percent on average in 2013,

• Policy priorities: Many smallbusiness owners are continually pushing the requirement to collect sales tax to large online retailers, as the survey confirmed. Eliminating public subsidies and tax breaks for big companies would go a long way toward balancing the scales in the eyes of many independent retailers. • Internet sales tax: More than three-quarters of independent retailers said in the survey that the

fact that many online companies are not required to collect sales tax had hurt their sales. More than 40 percent of these respondents described the level of impact to their sales as “significant.” Access to credit: In the past two years, 42 percent of small business loan applicants failed to obtain a loan or received one for less than the amount they needed.

No Pressure on Customers F

or local businesses, it’s all about the customer experience. This means friendly attitudes and a focus on you, not your dollars. You aren’t likely to find quota-driven salespeople around every corner at your local independent business. That’s because small-business owners depend on your repeat business. If they scare you off the first time you visit their store, they also scare off future revenue.

POSITIVE EXPERIENCE Local business owners treat you with respect and kindness because they need your support. Your money keeps their dreams alive, their families fed and their lights on. It also helps fuel their creativity and passion. Without innovation and a love for their business, independent retailers don’t have much of chance to succeed in the highly competitive fight for your dollar.

CONVERSATION Local owners are quick to talk with you and ask about your life because they are genuinely interested in learn10

ing about their customers. Gaining a better understating of their target audience helps owners improve their services, which, in turn, boosts their bottom line. Conversation can be extra helpful if you’re trying to complete a home improvement project. One trip to your local hardware store can often be less time-consuming and more informative than one to a big box operation.

REAL PEOPLE If you have a question for your local business owner, odds

are you can track them down on the phone with one or two calls. And you can bet you’ll actually hear a human voice when you make your call. Finding courteous assistance without having to punch through a hoard of automated “please holds?” What a novel concept. Small-business owners understand that customer service means sustained business. They are willing to make themselves available to help you work through any inquiries or product issues you are having. So pick up your phone and give them a call. They’re waiting to assist you.

Most recently researched by the University of Michigan, people tend to spend more on themselves when they’re feeling sad about something. Another recent study published by Psychological Science polled dozens of volunteers in a unique way. A team of researchers from Carnegie Mellon, Harvard, Locally Owned & Operated 2014

Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh showed volunteers either a video clip that showed grief following a tragic death or a neutral clip from a nature show. They found that people who watched the sad video clip offered an average of 300 percent more money for the item than those who had viewed the neutral clip.

FEEL GOOD BY GOING GREEN “Retail Therapy” isn’t the only way that shopping locally can make you feel good. The impact you make on the environment can go a long way, too. Every dollar you spend locally decreases your carbon footprint by reducing the amount of gas and packaging required to complete the supply chain process. The connection between smart shopping and sustainability is strong, especially when spending is at its peak. cott Driscoll graduated from college in 1992 in North Dakota with an aviation degree. But after working at the original Rydell car dealership in Grand Forks, his career has been more grounded, although it has still taken off. “I fell in love with it,” said Driscoll, who went on to manage and then own other Rydell dealerships in North and South Dakota. But since October, Driscoll has called Flagstaff home after he participated with the Rydell group in buying the Planet Nissan Subaru dealership at the Flagstaff Autopark. “I wanted another challenge,” said Driscoll, adding that he has purchased an adjacent lot at the autopark for future expansion. The sale became official Nov. 1, and Driscoll said he and family feel right at home in Flagstaff. “We love it here,” he said. “It has a midwestern, friendly feel to it — and the snow melts a lot faster.” According to its website, Rydell has grown from the one dealership in North Dakota to the largest dealer group in North America, through common philosophy, not common ownership. The group has 61 locations, 80,000 retail sales units per year and

$2 billion in sales. The group is known for helping employees become dealers. Salespeople, technicians, finance managers and parts people have moved up in the ranks, and are now owners of their own dealerships. Driscoll said he has brought the Rydell values to all of his dealerships, including Flagstaff Nissan Subaru. They start with a “best price” approach that doesn’t change depending on whether a customer plans to pay cash or use credit. And the value of a trade-in is set from the start — it won’t change depending on which vehicle ultimately is purchased. Salesman are also paid by the unit, not by how much the dealership earns on a sale. “My goal is not to sell any one car,” he said. “My goal is to sell you the rest of your cars.” Added Driscoll, who still owns a dealership in Watertown, S.D.: “We’re going to be here forever. I’m not in the business of selling dealerships.” Driscoll said he is getting adjusted to selling vehicles in an autopark instead of along a busy highway. “We want it to be a destination.”
