We can’t all be astronauts, but we can be pioneers. Moonshot celebrates innovators and helps them bring their ideas to life.

The Translational Genomics Research Institute, or TGen, understands the importance of biomedical research for the health of our communities. Scientists at TGen North here in Flagstaff are working to develop new diagnostic tests, like a Valley Fever test that was just approved by the FDA, and new disease outbreak investigation tools that support our local, state and national public health system. We are proud community partners with NACET, who help move these discoveries into action — in our hospitals and health departments.

After almost a decade of successfully housing emerging businesses in our incubator and accelerator facilities in Flagstaff, as well as providing entrepreneurial programs and services throughout the state, the Northern Arizona Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology is entering a new stage.
WELCOME TO MOONSHOT
While we still plan to be the premier institution for nurturing next-generation businesses and helping others scale their operations, our focus is shifting towards “Moonshots.”
What are Moonshots? They are the exciting, no-holds-barred, innovative ideas that are seemingly impossible, but can be made commercially viable through science, design, technology, visionary thinking and down-to-earth business acumen. We have been inspired by what we are seeing locally and state-wide: the pioneering research and ingenuity of educational institutions like Northern Arizona University; the bubbling cauldron of ideas coming from the bioscience and tech sectors; the unprecedented number of millennial entrepreneurs, who are already pioneering new business models and believe that companies should be as much about passion as they are about profit. Fueled by this enthusiasm and feeling the venture capital community’s hunger for game-changing innovation, we knew it was time to take NACET in a new direction without sacrificing our original purpose—to take entrepreneurs’ dreams to fruition by rooting them in reality. The difference is that our program is now actively searching for those who are dreaming a little bigger. We aren’t looking for small innovations that will improve existing products and services incrementally; we are searching for the ideas that advance us exponentially. Our team aims to be the foundation builders for today’s Moonshot dreamers. We will provide the practical skills, reality checks and support they require in order to launch—confidently and successfully—into the future. We look forward to you taking this journey with us.
Scott Hathcock President & CEO Moonshoot at NACET
Pursuing the seemingly impossible with innovation and creativity so that it becomes inevitable. Exploring ambitious, even radical, ideas with the intention of profoundly changing lives, as opposed to tweaking existing products, services or systems. As a concept, the term moonshot entered our collective consciousness in 1961, when John F. Kennedy challenged us to envision a world in which an American astronaut could climb aboard a spacecraft, rocket hundreds of thousands of miles into the void, leave his bootprints on the moon and return safely home. No one knew how to do it, everything was theoretical, lives would literally be on the line.
WHAT IS MOONSHOT?
Moonshots existed even before we dreamed of breaking the bonds of Earth (every explorer that ever sailed an uncharted sea or probed the inner workings of the atom was a Moonshot). Moonshots are even more prevalent today, as a near constant exponential growth of technology rouses those who want to know, “Why can’t we do that?” Moonshot at NACET seeks those ambitious, disruptive innovators whose plans hold commercial possibilities. If accepted, these entrepreneurs and their ideas are put through a rigorous, four-track process that will develop a minimum viable product or investment-ready concept by the program’s end. This is Moonshot thinking, and going forward, it is what powers the Northern Arizona Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (NACET). Additionally, Moonshot offers seminars to teach innovators how to sell their ideas to investors; a basic business course for would-be entrepreneurs; and panel discussions to inspire future Moonshots and share best practices among the ones already established in the firmament.
Moonshot at NACET will provide entrepreneurs a launching pad to share their ideas in an environment that offers one-on-one support as well as provides business tools for success. To have an opportunity to work with such experts in their field as well as enjoy all of it in Flagstaff’s beautiful, natural surroundings is truly ground breaking. WHAT’S YOUR MOONSHOT?
On the first Monday of every month, we host Moonshot Monday. It’s your opportunity to pitch your idea to a panel of experts. You can get feedback on your idea and may be offered acceptance to our Primary program. Visit moonshotaz.com to apply for our next Pitch Day.
PROGRAMS & TRACKS
PRIMARY
We are constantly being told about how fast our workplaces are changing. A July 2017 report from Dell estimates that 85% of the jobs that will be available in 2030 haven’t been invented yet. However, many of the visionaries who will create tomorrow’s positions need some down-to-earth training today before they reach for the stars. Enter Primary, a four-track program that takes an idea and builds around it the infrastructure needed to transform it into a viable business. From validation to market research to funding, Primary essentially builds the rocket Moonshots need for their voyage.
Interested in our programs but you don’t live in Flagstaff? We’ve had great success working with Affiliate Clients. Contact us and we’ll set up a time to discuss your needs. ---
IGNITION This program is a high-intensity version of the Primary program designed to be completed in six months. The first four months are spent on-site at NACET, working with mentors to develop their idea, customer validation and business plan. The last two months are off-site, but continuing to work with mentors.
PITCH POWER
Not ready to dive into one of our programs but still want to learn some skills? We also host monthly Lunch & Learn events on a wide range of topics. We’re also working on bringing more events, workshops, and bootcamps to Flagstaff. To stay in the loop, sign up for our mailing list at: moonshotaz.com
An 8-week skills training program teaching entrepreneurs how to pitch for money to fuel their Moonshot. By elevating their pitches through this program, NACET-affiliated companies have already raised in excess of $6 million from investors. Pitch Power will be offered three times in the Phoenix area each year and in Flagstaff.

FLAGSTAFF’S RICH HISTORY OF MOONSHOTS
PERCIVAL LOWELL
THE SYKES BROTHERS Godfrey & Stanley Sykes were adventurers from England who traveled to the United States, drawn by stories about life in the American west. Upon arriving in Flagstaff in 1886, they established a cattle ranch. When the livestock market became depressed, they literally switched gears, opening Flagstaff’s first bicycle repair shop on Aspen Ave., just east of the Monte Vista Hotel. Advertising as the Makers and Menders of Anything, the brothers’ repair shop became something of a scientific salon, attracting like-minded inventors and innovators. The Busy Bees (as the group called itself) included astronomers, geologists, and botanists. Percival Lowell hired the Sykes brothers in 1896 to build a forty-foot dome to house a 24-inch refracting telescope, and Stanley would work at Lowell Observatory for many years. During World War I, Godfrey was part of a scientific team sent to England, and helped in the development of the gas mask used by the British in that war. Photo: Lowell Observatory Archives *Information about the Sykes Brothers drawn from “Stanley Sykes” by Henry L. Giclas, The Journal of Arizona History, Volume 26, No. 2 (Summer 1985) and Godfrey Sykes obituary, Tucson Daily Citizen, (December 23, 1948).
It was Percival Lowell who brought astronomy to Flagstaff by choosing the small town in what was then known as the Arizona Territory as the home of his eponymous observatory. While many of his theories were ultimately disproven—such as speculation that there were canals on Mars—his legacy still looms large. His pioneer observatory site selection; set the stage for the discovery of Pluto after his death; and has been credited as the most influential popularizer of planetary science in America before Carl Sagan. Photo: Lowell Observatory Archives
From its start, Flagstaff has attracted the types of thinkers and risk-takers needed to create Moonshots—sometimes whole families of innovators. Here is a sampling of some of the pioneers who’ve made their mark in our mountain city.
A.E. DOUGLASS An assistant to Percival Lowell, astronomer A. E. Douglass was also a member of the Busy Bees, the scientific community based in Flagstaff at the turn of the century. He is probably best remembered for his contribution to the study of trees. Attempting to find a correlation between sunspots and climate changes on Earth, Douglass started the new scientific discipline of dendrochronology (or tree-ring dating), the method of dating tree rings to the exact year they were formed in order to analyze atmospheric conditions during different periods in history. While people already knew that a tree trunk’s rings indicated annual growth, Douglass work advanced that knowledge and he was able to correlate tree rings to determine climate conditions such as historical rainfalls, dry spells, diseases, fires and insect activity. He never did prove the correlation between solar flares and climate, but his work in astronomy is well respected and there are craters on the Moon and Mars named in his honor. Photo: Arizona State Museum, University of Arizona, Charles Herbert, Photographer
THE GORE & GIOVALE FAMILIES For more than half a century, W.L. Gore and his descendants have brought numerous innovations to Flagstaff and the world. When Gore and his wife, Genevieve (right), established the western hub of their manufacturing concern in Flagstaff, they forever changed the community. Now the largest private company in Flagstaff employing almost 2,000 people, Gore is famous for a variety of innovative products ranging from medical devices to Gore-Tex fabric. The couple’s daughter, Ginger, married another Gore innovator, John Giovale, and the couple became noted philanthropists in the southwest. They are also the parents of Danny Giovale, who was inspired to found Kahtoola, a designer and manufacturer of hiking crampons and other outdoor products, after a near disastrous fall climbing the Italian Dolomites. Photo: W.L. Gore & Associates
CAROLYN SHOEMAKER At one time, Carolyn Shoemaker held the record for the most comet discoveries (32) in addition to more than 800 asteroids and 377 numbered minor planets. She co-discovered ShoemakerLevy 9 in 1993, a comet that was ripped apart by gravitational forces on a near collision with Jupiter. With her husband, Gene, they received the Rittenhouse Medal in 1988, the Scientists of the Year Award in 1995, and the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 1996. One of the fascinating aspects of this work is that Shoemaker, who had been a teacher and full-time homemaker had never been interested in science in her youth. She began her career in astronomy at the age of 51.
